The idea of Pou is that you must look after the little critter, feeding him, playing with him and making sure he is clean. It's a more sophisticated version of the tamagotchi virtual pet toys that were popular in the 90s.

Your Pou character has four 'needs' that need to be met and sustained all the time: Food, Health, Fun and Energy. The level of each of these is represented by an indicator at the top of the screen. You can feed your Pou by dragging and dropping food into its mouth, clean it by rubbing virtual soap on it, and put it to sleep when it gets tired by turning off the light.

The most enjoyable element of Pou is the games section, where playing the games also serves to fill up Pou's Fun meter. There are seven different mini games in here, including a match-three game, dropping food, free fall and a musical Simon remake.

Scoring in the games is rewarded with coins, which you can use to purchase extra items for your Pou (food, clothing, objects, etc.) If you want to fast-track your way to the goodies then you can buy extra coins.

As with any real life pet, the novelty of playing with Pou wears off after a while but this Android game is adorable while it lasts.

Including Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day, Spring, Easter, and Summer versions of the game too, Angry Birds Seasons plays exactly the same as the original. Your mission is to destroy the pigs that are wedged in a series of elaborate constructions. You do this by aiming and catapulting your birds at the structure in order to smash it and hit the pigs.

The most recent update to Angry Birds Seasons, Winter Wonderham, has several levels based on around the festive period, including Santa pigs, destroyable presents and lots of snow!

It's a shame the developer doesn't experiment a little more with the gameplay as well as the graphics in these seasonal updates. That said, the difficulty of the levels in Angry Birds Seasons is enough to keep you distracted until next Christmas!

World of Goo previously was released on Windows and iOS platforms. Now on Android, the demo showcases the addictive and stylized puzzle gameplay that the World of Goo Demo displays.

Players have to create structures out of the goo balls by expanding the geometric shapes while using a limited number of goo balls. The first chapter does not present too much of a challenge, but the gameplay does become challenging.

World of Goo Demo tracks the number of goo balls saved, the time it took, and the number of moves, so quick thinking is part of the puzzle aspect of the game. The demo is great at presenting a sample of the full version of World of Goo.

With similar visuals to the other versions, World of Goo Demo is essentially the same game for a different platform. But with World of Goo Demo being a free download, it is a fun experience.

Card-based warfare

Unlike other popular Android combat games like Modern Combat or Brothers in Arms, Rivals at War doesn't require you to pick up a gun and shoot at the enemy. Instead, you just sit back and watch as your squadron competes in missions against another real-world player.

The gameplay in Rivals at War centers around trading cards rather than all out action. You purchase packs of cards using game currency which contain soliders with differing abilities, special attacks, customizations, etc. It's then up to you to select which of these to use when you go into battle. You can level up your soldiers and military arsenal to make your strike force even more potent.

It might sound a bit boring but actually Rivals at War is strangely engrossing and just watching battles can be hypnotic. Of course, there are times when you're getting destroyed by your opposition when it feels frustrating not being able to do get involved in the action.

While in-app purchases of cards and upgrades certainly helps you through the game, thankfully it's not a necessity to progress and as long as you're prepared to wait sometimes you can improve on your own.

How to play Rivals at War

When you first start Rivals at War you'll be walked through the logistics of the gameplay so you can learn as you play. Essentially, you just collect your card pack, choose which special items you want to use then click 'watch' to see the battle take place.

On the battlefield you have a number of viewing options. You can tap a particular soldier to follow them or use the satellite view to see the whole battlefield from above. It's possible to zoom in and out to really study what's happening out there.

Slick presentation

Rivals at War looks great, both in terms of the setup screens and the battlefield itself, though perhaps the action shots aren't quite as classy as many of the top third-person shooters for Android. But the game performs well, with decent animation and realistic sound effects.

In terms of the match-making of online players, Rivals at War does a pretty good job and we found most of the battles we were involved in were fairly matched, making for an exciting gaming experience.

The verdict

If you're a fan of tactical card battle games and you don't mind enduring the frustration of not being able to participate on the battlefield you'll no doubt enjoy Rivals at War. If you're looking for a straight action shootfest you won't find anything for you here.

It is known that rendering high quality graphics is possible depending on the hardware the game is being played on. Wind-up Knight by Robot Invader presents one of the most enjoyable platforming games.

Using polygons and an amazing landscape of visuals, Wind-up Knight is an impressive game. Broken into short levels, players have to guide Wind-up Knight through the level by jumping, rolling, and attacking while collecting coins and cards in each of the levels. Gameplay is based off of the touch-screen, and controls are responsive when needing to perform different moves in sequence.

The brilliance of Wind-up Knight is that levels are dense and only require players to time their moves correctly without worrying about using the accelerometer to move the character across the screen. Wind-up Knight moves at his own pace and players only guide him through the level with the different moves. Collecting coins opens new swords, helmets, and armor that can add different bonuses for purchase.

Wind-up Knight is an addictive game because even when losing in a level, the game does not feel overly difficult. The mistakes made in the game are easily corrected with a small amount of trial and error.

Wind-up Knight combines the simple and addictive together and presents one of the best experiences on Android.

Eyes down for a full house

The challenge in Mr Bingo Ball is to mark off all the numbers on your bingo card (i.e. a full house) before the time runs out. The balls drop down and you must tap the accept button if you have that number on your card, or the reject button if you don't. Call it wrong and seconds will be knocked off your maximum time.

Along the way you can earn (or buy) power-ups in Mr Bingo Ball that give you hints, add more time on, or automatically clear a square. There are different levels to unlock which are all themed around countries. You unlock them by building up your XP points.

To play a game in Mr Bingo Ball you need to spend game coins, which you win by getting full houses.

Mr Bingo Ball features leaderboards where you can pit yourself against your Facebook friends and against all other players around the world.

Is it easy to play?

The main menu in Mr Bingo Ball is a bit overwhelming at first look, packing lots of information and options into one screen. However, once you work out what everything does you'll be comfortable with it.

Playing the game itself is very easy. All you need to do is look at the number that drops down and hit the red button to reject it or the green button to check it off if you have it. The power-up button in the middle allows you to access your stored power-ups.

Although the controls themselves are easy, it doesn't mean it's easy to win. In fact, at times you feel that the game is playing you. At first you'll win a few games and build up some game coins, but after a while you'll find yourself always waiting for one or two numbers to come up and they don't appear.

How does it look?

Mr Bingo Ball is nicely presented. The levels are colorful, and the inclusion of backgrounds themed around countries helps to add variety. Sound effects are nice too and you get a satisfying ping and vibration when you successfully check off a number.

The verdict

Mr Bingo Ball is great fun to play at first. However, the repetitive nature of the gameplay and the fact that it becomes increasingly hard to win games means that the fun factor soon fades.

The object of Triviados is to fill your wheel with colored segments. You do this by rolling the dice to move around the board, and must answer a question on every square you land on to keep playing. Questions are divided into categories (sports, geography, shows, art and literature, etc.), with each one represented by a different color. Segments in Triviados are only awarded if you land on the main square for a particular color.

Triviados is a two-player game where you play against an online friend. You can choose to play against a Facebook friend, enter the email address of another player, or play against a random opponent. You then take it in turns to play, and you receive a notification when your opponent has taken their turn.

Triviados is fun to play, though it can be frustrating having to wait for your opponent to take their turn. It would've been nice to have the option of a local two-player mode where you swap the phone between two people - or even a single-player practice mode.

The presentation of Triviados is a little rough around the edges, but if you're a fan of the Trivial Pursuit board game you'll enjoy this version.

What's special about Jewels Star?

Jewels Star doesn't deviate much from the classic match-three game format: you make groups of three or more colored gems, they explode and disappear then more gems fall down. There are special power-up gems that perform certain things like exploding a whole line or row of gems, or giving you more time.

There are three different game modes in Jewels Star: Arcade, Mineral, and Classic. All of these play out in a slightly different way, making for a variety of challenges. There are more than 350 levels in total in Jewels Star.

How to play Jewels Star

If you've never played a match-three puzzle game before, Jewels star might be a bit overwhelming at first, and the help screens aren't very clear at explaining what to do.

The controls themselves are simple though - you just tap on a gem to select it then tap on an adjacent one to swap them around. In terms of the behaviors of all the power-ups and how to solve the levels, it's something you'll pick up as you go along (a clue: get the blue star down to the bottom of the pile to complete a level).

A polished gem

The presentation of Jewels Star feels very polished. The other-wordly backgrounds (of which there are eight) look great, and the gems themselves are coloful and shiny.

The music in Jewels Star is both melancholic and hypnotic, and the sound effects for the lightning bolts are explosions are so thunderous that they'll make you jump at times.

The verdict

Though Jewels Star brings nothing new to the match-three genre in terms of original gameplay, it is hugely entertaining to play and almost impossible to put down. One of the best games of its kind on the Android platform.

Challenge your memory

In Follow ME Free you are shown a grid of squares and must watch the path of the dots as they move slowly from one point to another on the grid. Once they stop you have to try to remember where they came from and the route they took, drawing this on the grid.

There are more than 200 different levels in the classic mode of Follow ME Free, divided into 8 categories based on the number of squares in the grid and the number of dots that move. Even the easiest level (4x4 grid with two dots) gets tough after the first few levels, and the hardest level (7x7 with three dots) will challenge even the sharpest minds. The good thing about the levels in Follow ME Free is that don't need to follow them in order, so you can move onto another one if you get stuck.

If by some miracle you manage to complete all the levels in classic mode, you should give parallel mode a try. Here, the dots move at the same time, making it doubly hard to remember the paths. Again, there are more than 200 levels in this mode, though you need to play them in sequence.

Gameplay is entertaining and the challenges are quite addictive. However, Follow ME Free is crying out for an extra gameplay element - be it a time limit or an online leaderboard where you can compete against others to see who has the best short term memory.

How to play Follow ME Free

Although the challenges are touch, playing Follow ME Free is actually very simple. All you need to do is hold your finger down on the starting square and trace it around the grid in the order of squares you think the path took. If you make a mistake you can go back and start again, though the number of mistakes does get counted.

Uninspiring graphics

The presentation of Follow ME Free is very basic. Don't expect any fancy background graphics - all levels have the same plain black background. There's no music either, and sound effects are minimal.

What is Defender II all about?

As with the first version of Defender for Android, players guide the castle defenses against oncoming waves. It is only required to aim and the castle fires arrows. Defender also includes magic spells to defeat multiple enemies with area damage or effects.

Defender II also includes upgrades to castle defenses and leveling the spells in the game for greater enemy damage or defense points. As you get into the game you'll find it difficult to progress very far without leveling up. This can be remedied quickly with an in-app purchase, or by keeping playing the lower levels to build up game currency.

Unlike the original version, Defender II includes a Battle mode, in which you take on other players online in head-to-head matches to see who can stay on the longest without getting their castle destroyed. This is good fun if you're matched with someone of your level, but often Defender II will put you up against people who are obviously way above your league, which gets annoying.

How to play Defender II

Defender II is pretty easy to pick up and start playing, and there are on-screen hints at first that tells you how to play the game. Essentially you just need to point your arrow in the direction of the enemies and tap the screen, or hold down for continuous bursts of fire. To cast a spell you just drag the magic icon into the area of the screen you want to affect.

The upgrades menu in Defender II is easy to get your head around, too. All of the various upgrades, power-ups and spells have an explanation to tell you what they do.

Graphics in Defender II

The graphics in Defender II are attractive enough, but nothing to get really excited about. There's little animation happening on the screen other than the monsters that are coming towards you, and the backgrounds are static. Still, this helps in a way because it allows you to focus on the next enemies you should target.

The verdict

Defender II is an enjoyable tower defense game that can be played for free if you have enough patience. Despite the introduction of a multiplayer battle mode, it doesn't bring much originality to the tower defense game genre, however.

Castle defense games are pretty popular these days, so it takes an interesting version to stand out. Castle Defense just about makes the grade, and it is one of the most popular of the genre out there.

Castle Defense is pretty traditional. Defend your castle by building towers and deploying soldiers, then sit back and watch how the battle unfolds. You get scored for each level, Angry Birds-style, and can upgrade your defenses and abilities by collecting crystals and amethysts. Of course, if you're not finding as many crystals as you'd like, you can always get your wallet out and pay for them.

Joyland Bounce is a cute, colorful game for your Android device. It looks great and will keep you entertained for a good few levels.

Interesting gameplay

Joyland Bounce looks and plays a little differently to what you might be used to. We've seen the mechanism elsewhere, but some people might still be unfamiliar with it.

Basically, use both hands to rotate, tip and slant your phone to help the little ball bounce over, and around the obstacles, collect the coins and hit the objective. These obstacles take the shape of a beautiful garden, so you'll have to move around to get over flowers, trees and hills and ultimately make it to the end of each level.

There are two game modes, Arcade, which is easy, and Story, which gets progressively harder. We found that Story was the more interesting option.

Easy to get used to

If you've never played a game like this, it will feel stange to move your device around so much. Once you get the hang, though, it's easy and fun. If you're not into the tilting, go to options and change the controls to Swipe. The tilt option is more fun though!

Almost perfect

Joyland Bounce looks good and plays smoothly. We didn't notice any glitches or lag, although there is something rough about the game that we couldn't put our fingers on, exactly. It's so insignificant though, that it won't affect your enjoyment.

A lovely game, but debatable lasting power

We had great fun playing Joyland Bounce - it's just so cute! That said, unless more advanced levels of the game radically change the gameplay, or get fiendishly difficult, we can't see the game being one that you go back to again and again.

It's more like a game that you play non-stop for a weekend and then never again. It's a fun weekend while you're at it though!

Tango automatically sifts through your phone's contacts to determine which of your contacts are using Tango (in much the same way as WhatsApp and Viber do), and displays all of these contacts very clearly so you can quickly start chatting with them. You get the option to invite someone via text message or email if you like.

Of course, the video calling functionality only works if you have a front-facing camera on your device. If you do though, you're in for a real treat because both the video and audio quality of Tango video calls are excellent, with less lag compared to similar applications.

Tango includes a few handy extra features, such as the ability to add fun filters and animations to your video chats. You can even play games together during calls if you get bored!

Tango is a very good video chat app for Android, which makes it easier to maintain face-to-face contact with your family and friends.

What's the aim?

The object of Where's My Water? is to help Swampy the hygiene-obsessed alligator take a bath by digging a path for the fresh water to run down through the sewers and through his shower head. Hold your finger down and draw a path through the mud to send the water cascading down (or up in some cases!). You can scroll down levels using the somewhat cumbersome slider bar.

Borrowing elements from the classic Pipes puzzle game and more recent water-based puzzlers such as Sprinkle, Where's My Water? challenges you to complete more than 140 different puzzles (just 25 in this free version), each with a different route through to Swampy.

A tough challenge

Completing levels in Where's My Water? isn't as easy as you might think. There are lots of obstacles to negotiate, such as acidic water that will burn Swampy if it touches him, conveyor belts, bridges, barriers, and much more. It's complicated by the rather crude digging controls, which aren't very precise - especially if you have fat fingers!

In each puzzle you should try to collect as many of the three rubber ducks as you can by filling them with water en route. There are also unlockable items and achievements to complete along the way, so there's plenty of gaming to be had in Where's My Water?

How good is it?

Besides having an original and captivating concept, a great game needs to be well executed in its presentation, and Where's My Water? certainly ticks this box. The cartoony graphics are great fun, and the physics of the water is very realistic.

Swampy himself is a real character. We love the way he sings in the shower, complains when not enough water is coming through, and gets so excited when the taps come on. The music in Where's My Water? is very catchy, and unlike many games like this, it rarely gets boring.

Where's My Water? is one of the most enjoyable casual games for Android, and is challenging enough to keep you playing for hours and hours.

What is Hero Defense about?

Your mission in Hero Defense: Kill Undead is to protect your tower from being attacked by the evil skeleton hordes who creep slowly towards it. You choose one of three characters to play as: warrier, ranger, or wizard, each of which have slightly different skills.

Your character then goes into battle, using their weapon to fend off attacks while being careful not to get hit by the skeletons' blows. Hero Defense: Kill Undead contains lots of power-ups, spells which can help you. These can be earned or bought during the game.

What's more, you can recruit a troop of warriers to help you defend your castle, unlocking different types of fighter as you progress through each level. You can summon these to the battlefield to help you fend off the skeletons.

Once you get past level four, you can play the Arena mode, where you tackle other players online. Good luck with this as it's very, very difficult even with lots of spells and a solid status.

There are lots of trophies to collect in Hero Defense: Kill Undead, which you can earn by completing challenges. This helps to add to the long-term interest of the game.

How to play Hero Defense: Kill Undead

The actions in Hero Defense: Kill Undead are pretty basic - move left by touching the left of the screen and right by touching the right side. Your character will automatically attack when he gets near a baddie. Be careful though, because they'll whack you if you don't get out of the way.

Hero Defense: Kill Undead is a bit confusing if you've never played this type of game before. There's no real tutorial level and the process of upgrading and earning/buying powers and spells isn't really explained.

How does it look?

Hero Defense: Kill Undead looks and feels great. The graphics are fantastical, especially the characters in the game, and the music is very atmospheric. The animation is a little crude when fighting, though walking around is very smooth.

The verdict

Hero Defense: Kill Undead is a bit more imaginative than the average tower defense game. It's great fun to play and unlike many other games supported by in-app purchase it is possible to go through the game without spending anything.
