How to get started in Minecraft

Your world in Minecraft is randomly generated, and you appear in a land surrounded by water, with mountains, valleys, trees and animals. It's not clear what to do except explore to begin with but as the sun sets, monsters appear, who will kill you. Survival is impossible in the open, so you need to build a shelter to hide out in for the first night.

Collecting wood from trees, coal and stone from cliffs, you have to use your inventory to create tools, planks and more. Once you know how, mining and building is pretty quick, and you can create some really cool structures.

Minecraft realms

A new realm has been added to Minecraft, which allows faster travel through the huge worlds. Called The Nether, it resembles Hell, and is full of flowing lava and monsters. You can access The Nether using portals made from Obsidian you have mined. Also, when you create a new Minecraft world, it will now be more varied, with 'biomes' of different landscape, like desert, tundra and snow. NPC (non player characters) now roam villages, which can serve as early shelters for you at night, if you can find them!

Version 1.0 has some nice cosmetic changes, including an HD texture pack, better lighting from torches and even prettier sunsets and sunrises! The game launcher also looks better. There is now a 'Creative Mode', which makes you invincible, gives you unlimited resources, allows you to fly, and fast forward/rewind time! This mode is ideal for players who just want to get on and build cool stuff, without worrying about staying alive.

Minecraft is a wonderfully inventive sandbox game that really deserves the title, as your creation in it is only limited by your imagination and time!

In SimCity you must build a city from scratch planning the different areas carefully to make sure that there are enough facilities to keep the population happy and healthy.

Single and multiplayer mode

When you start Sim City, you can either join a populated region which will have other online players in or start a fresh region yourself. However, the cities are limited in size, and SimCity is more fun when you have multiple cities that cooperate and specialize.

Whether you prefer to play alone or with others, it's enjoyable, but it's clearly designed more with multiplayer in mind. However, the biggest gripe with Sim City for Mac is that you cannot play without being connected to EA's servers which had several teething problems on the PC version and it's shame that you can't just play offline.

Incredible detail

Sim City for Mac is beautifully designed with an incredible amount of information and detail that really brings your city alive. You can even learn about every individual resident's wishes and concerns, obtain stats on almost anything and check out neighbors to see how they might complement you or offer you services.

Great graphics and sound

SimCity looks great and you can make the game look the way you want. When you're zoomed in, the detail and animation is great even down to each and every resident that seem to have their own personality.

Conclusion

SimCity for Mac is an excellent and impressive game. However, SimCity only really thrives in multiplayer mode, and whether you enjoy that will dictate how much you like the game.

Powerslam is the only pro wrestling game to ever come out for Mac OS X. Despite this it is no slouch, with it's big roster, massive arsenal of moves and unique graphical style the game would still stand out on other platforms too!

The game is made to be fun. It has the hard hitting fast pace action you'd expect from an arcade game along with a very in-depth character growth. Wrestlers actually gain a fan following based on their actions in the ring.

RollerCoasterTycoon 3 Platinum is a special version of RollerCoaster Tycoon which combines the theme park fun of Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 with two expansion packs: RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Soaked! and RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Wild! These expansion packs allow you to go beyond building your own water slide such as creating your own safari park with real animals that your customers can interact with.

You can play RollerCoasterTycoon 3 either as a profit making business or in sandbox mode with unlimited funds. The graphics are adequate although are one area where the game could be improved. Compared to other similar sim creation games such as The Sims, they're quite poor. However, the real fun is designing the theme park of your dreams and creating some truly spectacular rides.

For any Mac users that have waited for RollerCoasterTycoon to be released on Mac, RollerCoasterTycoon 3 will not disappoint.

You play the role of Mrs Piggly who bakes apple pies for the kids but can't do so until she's got enough ingredients for her pies. However, this isn't as easy as it sounds. Piggly Christmas Edition features 32 levels of play and secret levels where you'll find threats and obstacles at every turn. Mrs Piggly has to climb trees, jump obstacles and even juggle apples in her mission to collect as many apples as possible. It's definitely fun for a while and the basic graphics have been lovingly animated but the special effects and gameplay in general soon become tiring.

Piggly Christmas Edition isn't exactly game of the year and the special effects aren't great but for a bit of festive fun for kids and adults alike, it's a nice stocking filler.

The premise of the game is very similar to other tower defense games. You place different towers around each level and then stream enemies through them, attempting to destroy them before they get to your base. In Radiant Defense, you have to protect a portal from aliens trying to invade Earth.

Visuals in Radiant Defense have a neon light effect on all the towers and enemies. It creates a stark difference between the background and the animation on screen. Watching Radiant Defense in motion is a lot of fun because of the large amount of action that can happen on screen.

Gameplay in Radiant Defense is really not different from most tower defense games, but it does allow you to set your own paths by placing modules around the level creating longer paths for the enemies to fly through. Add in different weapons like lasers and tesla coils, and there is a definite science fiction feel.

Radiant Defense is a lot of fun to play, because the game is challenging and can become very addictive quickly.

Using familiar popular gameplay mechanics like destructible cover, high-powered weapons, and 3D graphics, Frontline Commando is an impressive shooter for mobile devices.

Presented as a one-man army, Frontline Commando offers an experience very close to home consoles. The high quality graphics are impressive, containing smooth animations and outstanding effects. The game is like an action movie where players are given weapons and assigned missions to get revenge.

Even with a lot of action on the screen, Frontline Commando does not suffer lag or glitches and is consistently challenging. The audio of the game also envelops players in the multiple environments and various enemy types with different sound effects.

Frontline Commando’s controls are also very polished. Aiming is controlled by moving fingers around the screen with designated fire, reload, and cover movement buttons. There is also a duck button that serves as the reload when near an ammo crate. Include the various purchasable weapons and Frontline Commando’s gameplay can change rapidly.

Various missions require players to eliminate all enemies, survive for a length of time, or even rescue innocent people in the war zone. The variety of missions keeps the experience fresh. Weapons are purchased with money earned through levels or in-game currency purchases. Some weapons and items can only be purchased with the in-game money.

Frontline Commando is a great example of an excellent game using touch controls to manipulate the character onscreen. The experience of Frontline Commando is amazing because the game plays very smoothly.

On the downside, the game requires too many in-app purchases. Even to reach higher levels, purchases are necessary which is annoying, even if the game itself is free.

Frontline Commando is overall a decent 3rd person shooter that gets quickly addictive.

Like the Mass Effect series, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an 'immersive simulation', with a wonderfully realized world full of people to interact with, where player choice is instrumental in the storyline. The great thing about the game is that you really can play how you like, and you aren't punished for changing your mind.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution can be played stealthily, or aggressively, and you can mix up your style as you feel fit. Your actions and words have an effect on how the story plays out, which not only feels great when you're playing but gives the game plenty of replay value.

The gameplay in Deus Ex: Human Revolution is excellent. While the controls may take a while to get used to, they work really well. In fire-fights, shooting and cover are excellent, while the up-close kills that Adam Jensen preforms are suitably gruesome.

The world of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is stylish, and characters are well acted and animated. The only major criticisms of the game are that the boss fights are disappointing, and there are some pretty long load times as well. Despite this, it is still hugely enjoyable and immersive.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is deep and immersing, with excellent gameplay that allows players to be really creative. Do not miss.

In Botanicula you follow five tree creatures as they attempt to save their tree from an infestation of evil parasites. Botanicula isn't a normal point and click adventure. While there is a story, the point of the game seems to be exploration and interaction.

It's a surprisingly big game, with lots to explore and quite a complex map. The tree is divided into screens, and on each screen you can interact with the flora and fauna in different ways, sometimes for fun and sometimes to solve puzzles. There are no long conversations to follow, just really pretty animations accompanied by a gorgeous soundtrack.

Botanicula manages to stay away from being simply an attractive ambient experiment with the consistently inventive animals, and the evil parasites, which reminded us a little of the much scarier Limbo. Botanicula has a casual feel to it, but you'll enjoy it even if you consider yourself a 'hardcore gamer'.

One of the most enjoyable and relaxing games you'll play this year, Botanicula is the kind of experience which really is suitable for all the family, without boring any of them!

Minecraft already offers a huge amount of creativity and Minecraft SkinEdit expands that but instead of building more buildings, you can make superficial changes to the look of characters in the game. Every character in Minecraft is based on a 64x32 pixel wide PNG image. Minecraft SkinEdit allows you to create another PNG image with the same dimensions and add it to the game.

You can edit character colors using a color palette using brushes and paint pots. The brush size can be adjusted and you can make your characters as multicolor as your imagination allows. Any mistakes you make can easily be undone. Finally, you can see the result of your work with an animated preview.

Minecraft SkinEdit isn't exactly essential but it's a lot of fun if you're bored of the generic characters in Minecraft.

The developer describes BOOM as “Bomberman meets Doom”. Your mission is to infiltrate eight alien-infested areas, each one divided in 10 sub-zones. You then have to eliminate all enemies using your bombs and finally, in time-honored arcade style, beat the Big Boss alien.

As you might expect, the graphics in BOOM are very basic, as are the sound effects and soundtrack. There's plenty to keep you going with 80 different levels plus 10 different enemy characters of varying intelligence and weaponry.

BOOM is a lot of a fun to begin with although it soon becomes a bit tedious long before you've reached the latter levels.

In Limbo, you control a boy on a journey through a strange and frightening world full of monsters and mechanisms that are out to get him. It's presented in stark monochrome, but the graphics are far from basic. Animation in Limbo is fantastic, and the dust and liquid effects really add a lot of atmosphere and depth. There is a flicker in the lighting that gives the game a dusty, old feeling. The sound is also excellent, helping to create one of the eeriest games around.

Each level of Limbo features a series of puzzles and obstacles that require a mixture of thought and sometimes precision timing. It can be punishing, but the chilly atmosphere justifies the difficulty. This is a horror platformer, and it's not supposed to be nice! Limbo has moments that are pretty scary, and while it's not gory, it can be gruesome.

The journey in Limbo with your silent protagonist is full of memorable moments, and played in the dark it's a fantastic experience. Limbo isn't a very long game, but it is excellent from start to finish and there are few gaming experiences that are as involving.

Limbo is a must play game. Scary, tense and dreamlike, there is nothing else quite like it.

If you've ever played hangman, there's no need to waste time learning the rules for Doodle Hangman. It's pretty much just a new take on an old concept. The thing that makes Doodle Hangman completely fun and new is simply the great graphics that go along with the game.

First, pick whether you want to to use one or two player mode. Then choose a puzzle category. There is one for animals, another for holidays and a few other options from which to choose. Then comes the fun part - Doodle Hangman will show you the puzzle you have to solve and give you a set of letters to pick to solve it. Every time you pick a letter that's in the puzzle, it'll disappear from the alphabet list and show up in its puzzle location. Pick a letter that isn't in the puzzle, however, and the fun really starts.

Every time you pick an incorrect letter on Doodle Hangman, a piece of the hangman drawing starts to take shape. The first element is the noose. Next is the cartoon head of a person. Then, the torso, arms and legs. Doodle Hangman ends when the hangman himself is drawn and drops your poor little character through the shoot and the noose tightens. In a way, it's completely macabre. What keeps Doodle Hangman fun though are the varied gestures of exasperation your hangman drawing makes every time you miss a letter.

It would've been nice for the puzzle category you chose to be listed somewhere on the actual puzzle screen in case you forget what you're trying to solve. That's one small nitpick in an otherwise captivating and amusing game.

Doodle Hangman is hangman for a new generation and will keep you enthralled for quite some time.

While this is an alpha version, Way is complete enough to be really enjoyable. You need to be online, then when you run the game, it will search for a second player. Once found, you begin your adventure. It's perhaps half an hour long, but is unforgettable.

After a short tutorial stage, you are introduced to your Way partner. You can see each other, and communicate with a few expressions by waving and pointing your arms. In this way, Way makes you cooperate to complete puzzles and get through obstacles. This means it can be a little frustrating if you feel your partner isn't very good, but by the end you'll have a great feeling of achievement.

Graphically, Way is reminiscent of Little Big Planet on the PlayStation. It's cute, but looks good, with animations that give your avatars a lot of character. Controls are simple, but like Little Big Planet, jumping and movement can feel a little imprecise. That doesn't ruin what is a really excellent little game though.

Besides updating the game with the latest team and player data, FIFA 12 has been furnished with some impressive new features.

In recent years, the FIFA series has developed into a worthy rival to Pro Evolution Soccer, and in fact many will argue that FIFA 12 is a more complete soccer experience than PES 2012.

What's new in FIFA 12?

Building on the success of recent years, FIFA 12 introduces three main developments: precision dribbling, tactical defending and the player impact engine. These all - and especially the latter of the three - have a major impact on the gaming experience.

What does this mean?

The impact engine has arguably the greatest impact on gameplay, and it really changes the dynamics of tackling and contact in the game. FIFA 12's impact engine makes tackles look and feel much more realistic, and will no doubt result in more player injuries! When two players jump for a ball in the air in FIFA 12, they will no longer always land together perfectly, but may fall depending on the contact made with the other player.

Defending in general has been refined, and it's not longer possible to just hold down the 'pressure' button and expect the nearest defender to squeeze up and snatch the ball from the attacker. In fact, do that in FIFA 12 and you can seriously mistime the challenge and allow the player through. Timing is everything in this new tactical defending system, and while it's frustrating it's ultimately more rewarding when you start getting it right.

When dribbling in FIFA 12, you do feel in much more control than previous versions. Getting past defenders is more enjoyable as a result, and neat tricks seem easier to pull off.

How realistic is FIFA 12?

Very. As always, FIFA 12 is fully licensed so you'll be able to play with your favorite players and clubs, and the game will follow the summer and winter transfer windows, so teams will mirror their real life counterparts.

Graphics have had an incremental improvement, and animation is also better than last year's game. The full version of FIFA 12 will also have a big online component, with a much greater social element. Support Your Club League Tables will exist, allowing your performances with your favorite teams to contribute to their community standings overall. EA is also promising to keep FIFA 12 fresh with real-world soccer news.

What's in the demo?

The FIFA 12 demo gives you access to Manchester City, AC Milan, Olympic Marseille, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Arsenal. The options are fairly limited, and settings such as choice of ball, weather and length of the halves are not incorporated in this demo. All other aspects of the game are also missing, so you play just one practice game, but it still gives you a good impression of FIFA 12.

FIFA 12 is an incredible soccer gaming experience which is as close you can get to playing a real game of soccer on your Mac.

Particularly for avid solitaire players, right away you know that Full Deck Solitaire is going to be a fun experience. The background graphic is lovely, and it's even animated. The animation doesn't distract from the game at all though, thankfully.

With Full Deck Solitaire, you can choose from 22 different versions of solitaire games with a few simple clicks. Full Deck Solitaire also offers hints if you get stuck, a redo button that lets you start over from your last move and the option to mute the background music. The interface is very user-friendly, so even if you're not all that comfortable with Mac apps, Full Deck Solitaire is a breeze to learn how to use.

Gameplay is also enjoyable, from the way the cards enlarge when selected to the floating point tally every time you achieve new scores. Full Deck Solitaire will also keep statistics for how many games of each type you won and lost. It's a great way to keep track of your progress and provides proof if you feel like bragging to other card enthusiasts as you go.

The only really annoying thing about Full Deck Solitaire is that an enlarged screen may cut off the last card on the game's right-hand side, depending on what version of solitaire you're playing.
