Going through them or searching or them one by one is terribly time consuming and also an inefficient way of doing it.

Clean App works by listing all the applications installed on your hard drive and then shows you which folders, files and other components are linked to it. In the system preferences, you can also ask CleanApp to track track widgets, plug-ins, and screen savers associated with a certain program. One thing CleanApp is very useful for is removing language packs from applications which can take up reams of folders on your Mac. CleanApp is also easy to access via a useful dashboard widget to stop you having to go into your apps folder or cluttering your dock with it.

CleanApp is a handy way to get rid of residue files or those folders and remnants left behind by uninstallers.

Download CleanApp 4.0.1 in Softonic

CleanMyMac Classic 1.10.10

CleanMyMac Classic basically scans for and cleans the following types of needless data:
1. outdated caches - data that was generated by applications to load faster but became useless
2. unneeded logs - files containing information about events happened with apps; if you're not a developer, you don't need these files;
3. language files - these files allow OS and apps you have installed to support many languages you don't know or use
4. universal binaries - files that allow apps to work on platforms and architectures different from yours
5. system junk, application leftovers and trashes - this category includes all the data generated by the apps and system that is outdated, corrupt or won't be used anymore.

Besides being an excellent solution for cleaning your Mac from needless data, CleanMyMac Classic also includes a bunch of useful tools to help you make your Mac even cleaner. Built-in Extensions Manager allows you to manage all the plugins, extensions and widgets installed in Mac OS X. The app’s Applications Uninstaller module completely removes any app and its leftovers from your hard drive. Finally, the Quick Erase Files module can physically overwrite the desired files for three times so they couldn't be recovered with any special tools.

Unlike many other cleaners, CleanMyMac Classic is still compatible with OS X versions from 10.4 to 10.6. Also, it sports sophisticated algorithms that make it the safest cleaning solution on the market. The built-in ignore list helps the app skip potentially troublesome files and prevent critical and important files from scanning and deletion. The hidden knowledge base contains instructions on how to remove particular apps and extensions to bring no harm to your system.

CleanMyMac Classic is a definite must-have solution for any Mac user who wants to have more free space and keep his Mac clean and running smoothly.

Download CleanMyMac Classic 1.10.10 in Softonic

AppDelete 4.0.7

When you drag an application to the Trash, it doesn't necessarily remove all associated files. AppDelete ensures that apps are completely removed from your Mac.

A number of developers have picked up on the issue of incomplete app removals (it's odd that Apple hasn't) and created applications that will fully delete all files associate with a program. AppDelete is such an app and a very good one at that too. Once AppDelete is installed, all you need to do is drag the program you want to remove onto its icon. Alternatively, you can selects Apps in the top right corner and AppDelete will reveal a list of Applications installed on your system. The search is very quick and takes just a few seconds.

Immediately, AppDelete will reveal the associated files that need deleting with the applications. These are normally receipts and library preference files. You can uncheck the ones you want to keep in the AppDelete window or remove them all. AppDelete also lets you keep a log of what you are removing. Its a good idea to save this file as you can use it for future reference in case of system problems and it turns out you've accidentally deleted an important file. There is an Undo feature in AppDelete too but it seems this only rolls back the last change that you made, not successive ones before that.

My favorite feature in AppDelete was Orphans. Orphans searches for files that are not associated with any applications anymore and have probably been left behind. I discovered a huge number of files using this that AppCleaner had obviously left behind. The only criticism I have is that there is no way to Select All which, if you're dealing with hundreds of files left behind, takes a long time to select them all. Cleaning though takes a matter of seconds.

Note that this trial is limited to a few uses after which you have to pay to upgrade to the full version. However, even if you don't choose to use it regularly, its very useful for removing orphan files as this can be done within the trial limit. Many users also report the developer is extremely helpful and responsive in case of problems.

AppDelete does a great job of removing files left behind when applications uninstall but beware that you may experience some problems with it when you restart your Mac.

Download AppDelete 4.0.7 in Softonic

Although OS X is a very stable operating system, from time to time a bit of maintenance doesn't go amiss to make things more snappy. Magican is a simple and slick tool for exactly that although the dodgy translations throughout do cast some doubt over its credibility.

Magican performs maintenance and optimization of Mac OS X, removes duplicates to unnecessary translation files and binaries that take-up valuable disk space. In addition, it can uninstall applications and provide and can even generate a report of applications that are accessing the internet. It works in either a minimized version on your desktop, in your Menu Bar or in large windowed mode on your desktop. The slick interface reminds us very much of <taglink type="program" country="en" id="94838">MacKeeper</taglink> and it performs similar functions.

Although Magician is a very accomplished tool with a slick interface, the aforementioned translation issue means that it should be used with care. Magican is very eager to obtain your e-mail address when your start the app which is unusual for a cleaner and optimizer. There are other options such as <taglink type="program" country="en" id="28686">Onyx</taglink> that do pretty much the same job, without the slick interface but also with properly translated English and no requests for your e-mail address.

Magican is a slick cleaning tool for Mac although the poor translations and e-mail address request is a bit concerning.

Download Magican 1.4.3 in Softonic

Gemini searches for and removes duplicate files including videos, music, images, documents, using unique rapid algorithms while offering you an incomparably intuitive and beautiful interface. Numerous features like scanning the biggest files first, the Auto Select feature, spectacular shredding of duplicates and many others make Gemini an extremely efficient Mac utility with a truly remarkable design.

As MacPaw CEO explains, it was found that most of utility apps might be more personal, usable and are not perfectly designed like day-to-day apps. So we created Gemini, the application that brings perfection of a user interface and design to the utilities category. Gemini is a simple, fast and entertaining solution for finding duplicates, a task that once was considered boring and time-consuming.

As a software solution Gemini will satisfy any Mac user that is looking for really fast and simple duplicate finder with user-friendly and beautiful interface.

Download Gemini 1.4 in Softonic

You often need to check into the library and also remove application support and cache files. An uninstaller like AppCleaner will make sure all unwanted files are removed.

Appcleaner features simple drop and uninstall, like other uninstallers but also lets you browse through your programs, divided in applications widgets and others. This last one I really like as it shows all your plugins and components, which you normally have to go digging for in your library. Note that it will also take care of caches and receipts.

Appcleaner includes a search function to find applications faster, and I liked having the SmartDelete feature which will detect and trash related items. You can protect launched and default apps and 3D transitions and choose other ones you don't want to delete.

The only drawback in my opinion is the uninstall process, where you first have to search for the program, then uninstall it.

Apart from this minor issue, I think Appcleaner is an excellent uninstaller with both protection and smart removal, and surprisingly it's free! A must.

Download AppCleaner 2.0.5 in Softonic

dupeGuru Picture Edition 2.2.1

dupeGuru Picture Edition (PE for short) can help automatically find duplicate pictures on your computer and save both headaches and valuable hard drive space.

dupeGuru Picture Edition is actually a spin-off from the excellent dupeGuru, a program designed for doing the same thing for music files so from the start, you know you're in fairly good hands when it comes to duplication apps. The other good thing is, it's also open source too so those with programming knowledge can modify it to their needs.

dupeGuru Picture Edition can detect image duplicates in most of the major formats, including PNG, JPG and GIF. It integrates with iPhoto so you don't need to go browsing around for images to scan. In fact, it can automatically scan your entire iPhoto library. Of course, you may not wish dupeGuru Picture Edition to detect certain images or file types and the preferences give you the chance to tweak it to your liking via the scanning engine settings. dupeGuru Picture Edition also supports PSD and RAW (CR2 and NEF) formats especially for the needs of Mac users.

As regards what to do with your duplicates, dupeGuru Picture Edition can either delete images instantly or move them to another folder. The program features a 'Power Marker' for adding extra annotations to duplicate files. dupeGuru PE isn't perfect, however. One of the problems is that it doesn't always detect duplicates, especially those that are not in any of the major formats. In addition, scanning still takes a long time especially if you've got a big library of pictures.

Most recently, dupeGuru Picture edition has gone through a major revamp of the interface making it much slicker. However, the developer should have concentrated on improving the speed of scanning as many users will find it annoyingly slow.

Overall however, dupeGuru PE is an easy to use and highly customizable tool that will eventually help clear your hard drive of unwanted duplicate images.

Download dupeGuru Picture Edition 2.2.1 in Softonic

HDCleanUp is an all-in-one disk utility that does everything from application uninstalling to removing duplicate files.

In short, it keeps your Mac hard drive as clean and clear as possible. There are too many features to mention in one review but the most notable are:

Application Uninstaller - allows you to remove a program and all associated files; Removal of Orphaned Preferences Files - a simple tool that removes pref files left behind by applications; Duplicate File Manager - simply drop a document into HDCleanUp and it instantly reveals associated older versions with the same name; Duplicate Applications - gets rid of older versions of applications.

There are many others including a cache cleaner, a ZIP file cleaner and a tool to trim the size of applications packages. HDCleanUp also takes advantage of a new compression standard since Snow Leopard which allows you to compress files to save space.

Finder creates lots of hidden files every day on your Mac and FinderCleaner helps you to clean those that have started to become a nuisance.

FinderCleaner is particularly useful for external devices such as USB sticks that have .DS or Trash files on them that you can't remove normally. FinderCleaner cleans .DS_Store files, Resource forks, FBC files and .Trash files. In addition, it can be used to eject a volume in a cleaner way so that no new hidden files are created.

However, be careful when using it. Because it accesses system resources that aren't normally used, it requires your password to work properly. Users have reported that FinderCleaner has been detected sending data out from OS X which shouldn't be necessary at all. If you block this pinged data, the app seems to crash and the developer gives no explanation as to why it's necessary.

However, if you're not worried about security and really can't get rid of awkward files created by Finder, it's a powerful solution.

Download FinderCleaner 1.6 in Softonic

The preferences, settings and configurations you use for your applications are all specific to you. Every time you use an application, a trail of use is left behind that anyone could exploit.

Your privacy can therefore be compromised if someone is able to obtain some of this data. Going through each application and deleting data one by one is very time consuming which is why Tiptoe has been invented. Tiptoe allows you to clean privacy data from a whole host of applications in one go. It won't work with all of them, but it supports an ever increasing number.

Tiptoe is particularly useful if you want to chat, view images and movies, edit documents etc without a trail of your actions being visible to outsiders. When you open the Tiptoe interface, it will list all the applications installed on your system that it supports. Just select those applications that you'd like to keep your actions private on. If you want to erase old trails, simply select the application you'd like to clean and click Reset.

At the moment, Tiptoe only supports major applications but as this grows and as privacy becomes an ever more important issue, it could become a very useful security tool.

Download Tiptoe 1.0.2 in Softonic

There are many cleaning tools for Macs nowadays but perhaps none as thorough and comprehensive as Spring Cleaning for Mac.

Spring Cleaning for Mac reminds me of a cleaning tool for Windows that's been tastefully adapted for OS X. Installation is a bit annoying however. Because Spring Cleaning for Mac requires access to hard to reach system files, it requires you to log out and log back in again after installing.

When you open the application, you're presented with a wealth of cleaning options including Disk Image Finder, Image Finder, Widget Finder, Music Finder etc. All of these options target the specific file types they describe with the aim of cleaning-up or deleting those that you don't need anymore. Most of the options are self explanatory but some of them - such as Access Monitor and Poser File Finder, could do with a little bit more explanation.

When you click on any of the options, Spring Cleaning for Mac takes a while to search your system for the appropriate files. It seemed this search time was a bit longer than you'd expect to wait for in a cleaning app but the results are at least displayed and organized very logically and clearly. Along the top of the interface, a series of tabs allow you to Maintain, Exclude, Restore and Schedule cleaning sessions.

Most recently, Spring Cleaning for Mac has been enhanced by online backup integration courtesy of QuickBackup, a handy complete overview of your entire system with Magnifile and even the ability to upload and share files online with StuffIt Connect.

Spring Cleaning for Mac covers every possible cleaning angle although the slow search times and the installation procedure mean it doesn't score top marks.

Download Spring Cleaning for Mac 11 Deluxe in Softonic

Installation is a bit annoying however - the installer took quite a while to run for me and then afterwards required my user password and a restart.

When you're up and running, most of the functions such as Bookmark Manager, Cookie Finder and Mail Cleaner are pretty straightforward. Others such as Device Sentry and NetBlockade are unusual options for a cleanup tool but basically allow you to block dangerous attacks online and from external devices connected to your machine.

Like most good cleaners, you can schedule scans and its also easily accessible from the menu bar. However, the preferences are extremely limited as they only allow you to "Secure Delete Cache files". Internet Cleaner has been recently updated to work properly with Snow Leopard although there are known issues on earlier versions of OS X which you can read about in the Public Notes below.

Internet Cleanup is a standard cleaning tool with a few unexpected bonuses that you might not normally expect from such an app.

Download Internet Cleanup 5.1 in Softonic

Cheetah3D 5.3

The problem with most 3D editors is that they're either prohibitively expensive or extremely complex to learn. Cheetah3D aims at producing an affordable option with a more gently learning curve.

The first thing that strikes you about Cheetah3D is that it's a relatively small download for such an app and the interface is cleaner, better presented and simpler than many similar efforts such as Carrara or AC3D. It does, however, still take some getting to grips with, which is why there is both a full user manual and a convenient quick start guide to teach you the basics. However, this Quick Start guide still doesn't go far enough to produce anything impressive and there is a general lack of basic tutorials associated with Cheetah3D.

However, if you do invest the time and effort, most users find that you can produce amazing results that would be infinitely more complex in other packages. Some compare it favorably with 3DStudio Max, although there is no way that the all-important rendering will be quite as good as that. Bear in mind that you'll need a lot of processing power to use Cheetah 3D due to this rendering process. The Cocoa interface looks great though, meaning this is a program that has been specifically designed for Mac users in mind.

If you're taking your first steps into 3D modeling or can't afford the major packages out there, Cheetah3D is remarkably effective and generally, very user friendly.

Download Cheetah3D 5.3 in Softonic

AppZapper 2.0.1

One really annoying aspect of removing applications from your Mac is that they frequently leave behind folders, preference files and other things that waste hard drive space and generally clutter your system.

The first thing that struck me about AppZapper is that it looks very similar to <taglink type="program" country="en" id="63957">AppCleaner</taglink>, which, unlike this application, is free. The functionality is slightly different though as in AppZapper, you can drag and drop programs into the main interface to remove from rather than scan and select programs to remove as with AppCleaner.

When you drag and drop the files, AppZapper lists the associated files that you might want to delete with it. Click the 'Zap!' button to remove everything in one go. AppZapper isn't limited to applications either. It will also list all plug-ins and widgets and let you delete them with a click. Unlike AppCleaner, it also features a handy undelete feature just in case you've mistakenly removed a program and want to recover it.

The only downside of this program is that the latest version only works on Snow Leopard. However, we have provided a download link to version 1.8 for OS X 10.4 and 10.5 when you click download.

AppZapper provides an intuitive way of deleted any application and all associated files via a simple drag and drop interface.

Download AppZapper 2.0.1 in Softonic

PrefCleaner 1.0

Uninstalling an application on a Mac is the easiest thing ever: go into your Applications folder, select the one you want to remove, and drag it into your trash.

What most users tend to overlook, and therefore never get rid of are the preferences files associated with these applications. With time, these files can clutter up your drive.

PrefCleaner is a simple little freeware tool to get rid of them. Once it's open, just drag a program's icon onto it, and PrefCleaner will get rid of all of it's preferences file.

Unfortunately, PrefCleaner only works one app at a time, so if there are many applications you want to get rid of, you'll be there for a while.

The other nag we have with PrefCleaner is that it closes automatically after it has done its job so you will need to open it up again every time for each new program.

PrefCleaner is useful for removing preferences files for only a few program. If you need to perform the same task on a larger scale, try out <a href="http://cleanapp.

Download PrefCleaner 1.0 in Softonic

uApp seems to have been discontinued by its author yet you can still download this useful uninstaller. The program lets you easily uninstall programs and all related files and components.

All you need to do is drag and drop the applications you wish to remove into the program's interface. You can also lock certain items, that you wish to keep.

The interface is clear and uApp is basic enough for anybody to use it.
However, some users have complained that uApp doesn't always properly remove all files associated with a program.

You'll have to go fishing for these yourself, which can be pretty annoying, since components are usually hidden away in Application Support in your Library, if not in more places if its more complex.

Download uApp 1.3 in Softonic
