Development of iTunes has been stagnant the last few years so Apple needs to get this one right. Has Apple nailed it or is the new iTunes a mess? Read on to find out.
The interface of iTunes has been completely re-imagined. Everything is simpler and space is better utilized. In the previous version of iTunes, there was a persistent bar on the left where you can access playlists, albums, devices, and more. While it provided quick access to those features, most users didn't use them most of the time. Apple has scrapped this and has made the default album view take up the entire window.

Browsing by album is a pleasure. Click on an album and the tracks will show up below. iTunes also analyzes the color of album artwork to create a colored background for each individual album. It works well for the most part but the effect blurs the album art around the edges.

New in iTunes 11 is the "Up Next" feature, which is basically a fancy name for your queue. Add songs to your queue from wherever you are in the interface. You don't need to manage a playlist to arrange and rearrange the tracks to your liking.

Creating playlists is much improved. Instead of having to jump in and out a playlist to add and arrange tracks, playlists now have a dedicated pane on the right where you can manipulate tracks without having to jump around the program.

iCloud integration has also been tightened. Every track you've bought in iTunes will now show up in your music library, whether or not it has been downloaded. Click on it to download the album. User can now also stream directly from the cloud instead of having to download the track first. This also applies to all your TV and movies that were purchased in iTunes. There's also a dedicated tab for iTunes Match, Apple's music matching service to make all of your tracks available across devices, if they're available in the iTunes store.

The iTunes store has also gone through a redesign with featured content up top. Top lists are still there and are easier to browse. iTunes 11 will also allow you to access the iTunes store content from your music library, suggesting similar artists and tracks, without having to take you to the iTunes store.

The mini player has also been completely redesigned and is actually useful now. The mini player has gotten smaller but utilizes that small space much better than previous versions. Player controls will show up with you hover your mouse over the mini player. There's access to search and your Up Next queue can be manipulated from the mini player.

Devices now show up as a button at the top right. Clicking on it will take you to a detailed page where you can manage everything. Choose what you want synced, manage your apps, and even play music directly from your iOS device. Everything is easier to read and comprehend in the device tab.

The only thing missing from iTunes 11 is a music streaming service. iCloud gives users the ability to download tracks locally but not stream them. There is no subscription service in iTunes to compete with the likes of Spotify, Rdio, and Xbox Music. It's only matter of time before Apple releases its own music subscription service but it's disappointing that Apple didn't release it with iTunes 11.

iTunes is still one of the best media players around.
Windows Media Player 11

With Windows Media Player (WMP) 11 Microsoft aims to counter iTunes’ dominance. The interface has been beefed-up, usability has been enhanced and Microsoft has worked at turning its flagship media application into a full multimedia center, linked to online stores and compatible with mobile devices.

Improved interface

The first thing that will strike you when you start up Windows Media Player 11, is the complete revamp of the interface. No more deep blue, the whole application is now dark and shiny and you can customize it by selecting a hue of your choice. Windows Media Player's left side is a drop down pane for your library, the center displays your lists and the right side is used to create playlists which you can rip, burn or sync with a mobile device.

Compared to Windows Media Player 10, we feel that Microsoft has actually made an effort to simplify the interface and give you more ways to browse through your media list, whether by using the drop down menu or the quick rollout line on the top left. The 'play' and 'previous' and 'next' buttons are now nested at the bottom of the interface and have a jazzy glow whenever you roll over them. Microsoft has finally succeeded in integrating a good search function into its Windows Media Player interface. As you type the name of an artist or title the application will bring up the results in the main window.

Windows Media Player 11 makes all your media more accessible. Double click the Media Library button to browse from your music to pictures, movie files and recorded TV. The thumbnail view is a great way to quickly scan through pictures and videos and to include the album image to audio tracks. By clicking the “Media information changes” option under the Library button you can also scan your PC to automatically find new media files. Creating a playlist is a case of drag and drop and oddly enough you can integrate audio, video and pictures. Burning and ripping in Windows Media Player is also very simple, yet disappointingly converting is limited to WMA, WAV or MP3.

Easy to use

The sync process is promising yet remains a bit unstable. While it’s very easy to create a list and sync media, Windows Media Player can occasionally crash or fail to load your mobile device, even if you press the refresh button. When we tested it with a Pocket PC, we had to restart Windows Media Player 11 so that it would recognize it and let us sync our music. As soon as the device became accessible though, it also became visible on the left sided menu, making it very easy to browse through it for music or pictures.

A big improvement

Windows Media Player 11 is a huge improvement from version 10. The whole interface is snazzier and makes browsing through your media simpler. Microsoft has also made creating playlists, syncing, burning or ripping just a case of drag-and-drop. Windows Media Player lets you check out music on dozens of online stores and is loaded with small features to customize your interface and change how you interact with your media.

Conclusion

While the syncing process still remains a bit unstable and we lament the lack of podcast feed support, Windows Media Player 11 is a solid competitor to Apple’s iTunes.

Download Windows Media Player 11 in Softonic

Windows Essentials 2012 may have shed its Live branding but it is still a great starter pack of useful applications.

Windows usually comes with a dearth of apps out of the box but Windows Essentials 2012 solves this problem. It's a big download but that's because it comes with Live Messenger, Photo Gallery, SkyDrive, Live Mail, Live Writer, and Movie Maker. Let's take a deeper look at each program.

Windows Live Messenger

<a href="http://windows-live-mssenger.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">Windows Live Messenger hasn't seen much changed. There's tabbed browsing, <a href="http://facebook.en.softonic.com/web-apps"target="_blank">Facebook/<a href="http://linkedin.en.softonic.com/web-apps"target="_blank">Linkedin integration, and the ability to log chats. The interface is almost exactly the same as Windows Live Messenger 2011. We would have liked to have seen some more changes to make Windows Live Messenger 2012 relevant in this crowded space. See our full review of Windows Live Messenger 2012 <a href="http://windows-live-mssenger.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">here.

Photo Gallery

Photo Gallery and Movie Maker are the highlights of Windows Essentials 2012 as they received the biggest overhaul. Both programs are now designed for Windows 8 in mind and feature the Microsoft ribbon interface.

You can now tag people in photos in bulk. There's still great social network integration for quick, seamless sharing. There is also a new 'auto collage' feature which blends photos you choose into one fluid picture.

SkyDrive

<a href="http://microsoft-skydrive.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">SkyDrive is perhaps the least exciting but necessary app included in Windows Essentials 2012. Similar to <a href="http://dropbox.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">Dropbox's approach, SkyDrive creates a folder that syncs to the cloud and between machines. Make a change to a document on one machine and every other machine you have linked to your SkyDrive will update that document to the latest version. Integration is seamless and you'll soon forget about it, which is good.

Windows Live Mail

While competitors Apple has their default Mail application, Windows doesn't come with a mail client out of the box. Windows Essentials 2012 solves this by bundling Windows Live Mail. It is a solid mail client that offers a good way to manage your mail on the desktop.

There's an offline mode but Live Mail offers little benefit to those who want to manage their mail exclusively in a browser. The <a href="http://onsoftware.en.softonic.com/hands-on-preview-hotmail-com-turns-into-outlook-com"target="_blank">Outlook.com redesign helps to make the web site feel like an app so Live mail might not benefit users who prefer the web interface.

Windows Live Writer

Windows Live Writer is the oddball of Windows Essentials 2012. It is basically a writing app that integrates with your Blogger, Wordpress, SharePoint, and other blogging services. You can write, attach photos, and edit the theme of your blog from the application but its features are limited enough that users may as well use the website to make changes. It's a basic WYSIWYG editor that lacks features that would be useful for intermediate and expert bloggers.

Windows Movie Maker

Last but not least, we have Windows Movie Maker, which is the stand out application of Windows Essentials 2012. This basic video editing tool remains great while offering a few new features.

Movie Maker now takes advantage of hardware acceleration, which will speed up video exporting and encoding. There is also a new video stabilization feature, which will be a boon to those with cameras that don't offer this feature. Videos now output to h.264 by default.

The interface of Movie Maker has stayed the same for the most part but integrating audio is easier as you can now look up music from services like AudioMicro, Free Music Archive, and Vimeo Music Store. The video timeline also features a wav form so you can easily see where audio is placed within the video.

Final Words

Windows Essentials 2012 is a great suite of applications that will satisfy most Windows users. While some of its included apps struggle for relevance, many included apps are actually very useful. Best of all, its free and you can select which programs you want to install so you aren't forced to install the entire Windows Essentials 2012 suite.

Download Windows Essentials 2012 16.4.3503.0728 in Softonic

123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup lets Windows PC users backup audio and other files stored on their apple devices to a desktop PC.

One of the biggest frustrations Apple device users tend to have is figuring out how to transfer files from their iPods, iPads and iPhones to a PC. With 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup, you can transfer files with ease, along with being able to do a couple other useful things.

On top of being able to backup or transfer music, video files and e-books from an iPod, iPad or iPhone to your computer, 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup also lets you convert video and audio files for your Apple device.

123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup boasts a nice interface, arrayed in different shades of blue. Simply mouseover a button to read more about its functions. Settings are a bit sparse, but of the ones available you can opt to let 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup detect if iTunes is running before the program launches. You can also select a specific directory for output.

During tests, 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup had a tendency to freeze up or crash if buttons on the interface are clicked too rapidly in succession. 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup's English grammar for interface button descriptions and in the settings panel is also not the greatest, unfortunately.

The trial version of 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup allows for up to 20 file transfers and 50% conversion on video and audio files.

123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup is a great solution for transferring or backing up files from your Apple device to your computer, if you can handle the semi-frequent crashes.

Download 123 iPod/iPad/iPhone Backup 3.1.5 in Softonic

Would you like to use a lighter, faster tool to handle the contents of your iPod or iPhone? CopyTrans Manager is the answer to your needs.

CopyTrans Manager is an excellent replacement for the sometimes slow iTunes. It lets you fully manage your iPod, just like the Apple tool: see the contents stored in the device, create playlists, add new music and videos, edit the file's tags – including album artwork... everything on a simpler, lighter application.

The program is compatible with the latest firmware version (3.0) and also with the iPhone 3G S. CopyTrans Manager includes a built-in player that you can use to play music and video files, though the video preview doesn't work with large files.

Although CopyTrans Manager is not as feature-rich as iTunes (for example, it doesn't display lyrics or recognize iPod apps), it's a perfect alternative for those of you who are looking for a faster, easier iPod manager.

If you don't like iTunes, CopyTrans Manager is a great tool to easily manage music and video in your iPod or iPhone.

Download CopyTrans Manager 0.977 in Softonic

iDevice Manager is an ambitious program that aims to let you control every aspect of your jailbroken iDevice.

There are plenty of programs that can do what iDevice Manager does, but none have come in one easy-to-use package. Applications like <a href="http://sharepod.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">Sharepod and <a href="http://copytrans.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">CopyTrans allow you to move music around, but iDevice Manager allows you to manage music, video, ringtones, and files. It even has a ringtone editor and can turn your iDevice into a flash drive to store your files.

The reason iDevice Manager requires a jailbreak is because it needs root access to your device for features like viewing and archiving email, SMS, and iMessages. iDevice Manager also allows you to get into the root filesystem. The program warns you that you can cause damage to your device if you don't know what you're doing so this feature is for more advanced users!

iDevice Manager even allows you to view and listen to movies and music from the app. Unfortunately it will not serve as a replacement for <a href="http://itunes.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">iTunes as it requires an installation of iTunes to function.

While iDevice Manager sounds like an amazingly powerful program, we found it buggy to use in practice. We were greeted constantly by an error message about .net framework failing and we had to restart the app.

Overall, iDevice Manager is an ambitious program but proves buggy in real world use.

Download iDevice Manager 1.9 in Softonic
