I've always found viewing, managing and sorting files on a Palm something of a tedious and cumbersome process. We've all grown accustomed to using Windows Explorer or the Mac Finder to browse files, and small screen operating systems rarely make it as easy.

Resco Explorer changes all that though, providing an altogether more powerful and effective solution to the default Palm file browser. If you're the kind of cheeky prankster who loves winding up your friends then Smashed Screen could be the perfect download for your Palm.

The app basically loads an image of a damaged screen onto your Palm display, giving the impression that your device has actually been ruined. Click on the Home icon though, and the smashed screen will disappear, and your system will be 'magically' restored.

Granted, Smashed Screen is a bit of a cheap joke and it's not the sort of thing you'd keep installed on your device for too long. However, the illusion is very effective and might help you raise a chuckle or two.

Frankly though, if you're installing applications like Smashed Screen you must have far too much time on your hands.

I've never been great with musical instruments. In fact I'm so bad that I once tried blowing into the end of a violin trying to get a note. As a result, I'm often a bit scared about reviewing musical applications but I was pleasantly surprised with how beginner-friendly ScaleMaster is.

The Palm program allows you to experiment with different scales to perfect your musical compositions and harmonies. Like I said, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to playing music and I never realised just how many different scales there are. There are over 100 listed in ScaleMaster and they originate from all four corners of the globe.

It's easy to become bogged down in technical jiggery pokery in many music apps, but what I like about this program is its simplicity. You simply choose one of the scales from the drop-down list, pick from one of four clefs (treble, bass, alto or tenor) then choose a virtual instrument to help you learn the scale. All the notes in the scale are then displayed through a clear, colourful depiction of that instrument. The instruments available are the piano, guitar, drums, mandolin.

You get a few options to tinker around with, such as volume settings, notation appearance and the ordering of the scales. I would have liked to have seen audio previews of the scales when you highlight them from the drop-down list, but generally I really enjoyed using this one (although my favourite instrument, the bassoon was missing from the virtual instruments).

Whether you're a beginner or a musical genius, ScaleMaster provides a great way of learning scales on the bus.

Calculating electrical resistance is not something I have to do on a regular basis, but for those of you that do, PalmRes may be a good option.

PalmRes allows you to to calculate electrical resistance based on the four colors of an electrical resistor. Using the program is very straightforward and simply involves selecting colors from a drop-down list for the two bands, the multiplier, and the tolerance.

Once you've entered this information, the electrical resistance based on the settings you entered is displayed in ohms at the bottom of the screen. You can also customize the degree of variance using the drop-down menu (although you can't enter you own figures here).

PalmRes is strictly an application for those who are in the know about electrical resistance, and it offers no help to those who are uninitiated.

Although lacking in any real advanced features, PalmRes is a handy app for anyone who needs to measure electrical resistance.

The ladies often describe me as a 'Power Hero' but even I'm not able to conserve the battery of a Palm device. This little application can though, and does so with much aplomb. It does this by providing you with several options such as the ability to change the state of all the wireless resources on your device (telephone, TO GO, Bluetooth or WiFi).

You can also turn to Power Hero to automate the changing of your profile screen at certain times of the day or to auto-shutdown your Palm after a specified period of inactivity, both of which can help preserve your battery life. Of course, you could perform all these changes manually, but Power Hero lets you alter everything from one place, making it ideal for anyone who gets annoyed by running out of power all the time.

The virtual wallet market is popular with software developers. Nearly all PDA users make use of some sort of virtual wallet program to store their credit card numbers, email passwords or other personal data. eWallet, already regarded by most as the leader in its field has improved on its already excellent reputation with version 4, a feature packed virtual wallet application which is near perfect.

Whatever information you want to keep safe, eWallet is designed to help you entering and retrieving your data with the least hassle possible. Like most virtual wallet programs, it includes a range of categories to choose from as well as a ‘custom’ category option. However, because eWallet’s range of categories is so expansive (check out the ‘internet settings’ option with space for IP addresses, default gateways and more), you may find that you never even need to create a custom category.

When you create a new card (a card can represent an actual credit card or any other record), you’re immediately given a range of customisation options which exceed the offerings of other programs. Change the colour of your card, add a custom .ico icon file, or even a sound effect to make each entry unique and easily recognisable. Cards can be created in the main set of your data store or in unlimited levels of subcategories, offering a level of organisation which is simply unavailable in other applications.

eWallet’s level of security is also impressive. With frequent requests for your passcode, you can be sure that no one can simply pick up your PDA and gain access to your cards. eWallet offers 256-bit encryption where some of its competitors still don’t encrypt your data at all. It also offers you the option to set password hints on individual items, a handy and popular data-protection technique often employed on websites. As you may be able to tell, we were pretty happy with this version of eWallet! It has so few flaws that the biggest issue we had was with the non-alphabetic listing of icons in the card-editing screen – hardly a critical issue. Synchronisation via SyncPro is actually far better than using ActiveSync, given that it doesn’t need to upload/download the entire database each time it syncs: SyncPro is capable of only updating the latest changes you’ve made, saving you precious time.

eWallet performs its core role with simplicity and ease of use and then offers you a higher level of customisation than any of its competitors. It’s not only the best in its category but one of the few absolute ‘must have’ programs for Palm, Pocket PC and Windows Smartphones. With practically no negative points, it just can’t get a higher recommendation!

We're always being told that Palm is now pretty much a dead platform but if you're still using one of these devices you needn't worry too much that you're falling behind the times because there are plenty of ways to customize your handset to freshen it up a bit.

TouchLauncher provides you with the power to transform your Palm to resemble something far more modern and cutting-edge, namely, the iPhone. In order to start skinning your OS you'll need to install the application file and the iFone icon set, both of which come bundled together in the same Zip.

Before you launch the app you get the chance to scan the memory of your PDA in order to automatically add icons of applications into TouchLauncher and remove deleted applications from the program. Once you finally get the program running you'll be staggered by the quality of icons in this pack, which are remarkable faithful to the Apple device. In fact, it left me wondering how Steve Jobs would react if he clapped eyes on TouchLauncher (no doubt a phone call to his lawyer would be foremost in his mind.)

The software is highly customizable and you can not only select icons for individual for each each of your installed applications from your icon sets, but also to categorize and change the name that appears underneath each utility of icon. Make sure you have plenty of RAM allocated on your device though, because TouchLauncher is a bit of a memory-hogger.

If you're fed up with your mates mocking your Palm then TouchLauncher provides a great way to turn their sneers into gasps.

One of the most noteworthy program features is the fact that it's just so easy to use when it comes to introducing new pictures. Thanks to its application which resides in Windows, you simply need to load the image and then select "Install", then you will automatically be able to view this picture on your Palm!!

The interface supports 12 pictures on the screen at the same time, as well as the creation of categories in order to organize your pictures in whatever way suits you best.

I love a good read, but there are times when its impossible to carry a bulky hardback around with me. The application provides a wonderful array of options to give you total control over all your books and documents in the PDB format. There's even a battery indicator to protect you from any nasty surprises.

ZLauncher is one of a wide range of launcher applications, designed to help you manage your Palm PDA and launch its applications from a simpler and more user friendly interface. What makes ZLauncher special in its class is the variety of extra tools and features it brings to your Palm’s desktop.

The first feature to really impress in ZLauncher is its ability to launch programs from a storage card. This function allows you to move your applications to an external card and run them from there, even if they were originally installed to your device’s built-in memory. The logic of moving and running applications in this way is that by freeing up space on your Palm’s internal memory, you have more RAM free, thus helping your programs run faster and more efficiently.

The file explorer aspect of ZLauncher is a massive improvement on the native Palm file manager, providing features such as ‘tabbed’ browsing (allowing you to view multiple storage devices or folders in one window), and the ‘detail’ view mode which is reminiscent of Windows Explorer’s ‘details’ option and displays data on your files (size, date modified etc) alongside the filenames.. The addition of the Trash Bin (very similar to the Windows Recycle Bin) is a welcome improvement, as is ZLauncher’s ability to delete entire folder trees, an option curiously absent from some other launcher applications.

ZLauncher includes a themes option, allowing you to skin the program interface, customise icon sets and set pretty much any image as your device’s wallpaper. After changing icon sets, however, we noted a marked increase in ZLauncher’s memory consumption as well as various issues with icons appearing and disappearing. While the customization feature is a good idea, it seems that by using it you significantly increase the load on your Palm device. This is a shame but at the end of the day, themes and icons aren’t deal breakers in an application specifically designed to help you launch applications and manage your files.

In all, ZLauncher adds some seriously useful functions to your Palm’s desktop. While its memory load and customization options need some improvement, ZLauncher’s core features make it the best all round choice in its class.

The Attention Manager was a feature introduced in Palm OS 4.0 to co-ordinate information from different applications. It's not perfect though, and many users are annoyed by the fact that you don't get continuous alerts to things like new SMS messages or missed calls.

Attention Grabber is designed to change that, working as a hack for the Attention Manager. The main interface in Attention Grabber looks pretty dull, but it's functional and easy to use. You just need to set the program's state to 'Enabled' and choose the time interval between alerts.

You then get to choose how Attention Grabber will alert you, and can select 'Beep', 'LED' or 'Vibrate' (or a combination of these). You can also specify what time you want to activate the application, so it automatically comes into effect at this hour.

That's about it really, so Attention Grabber isn't really a powerful app with its own set of features, rather a free add-on that addresses a shortcoming in the Attention Grabber.
