The virtual wallet market is popular with software developers. Nearly all PDA users make use of some sort of virtual wallet program to store their credit card numbers, email passwords or other personal data. eWallet, already regarded by most as the leader in its field has improved on its already excellent reputation with version 4, a feature packed virtual wallet application which is near perfect.

Whatever information you want to keep safe, eWallet is designed to help you entering and retrieving your data with the least hassle possible. Like most virtual wallet programs, it includes a range of categories to choose from as well as a ‘custom’ category option. However, because eWallet’s range of categories is so expansive (check out the ‘internet settings’ option with space for IP addresses, default gateways and more), you may find that you never even need to create a custom category.

When you create a new card (a card can represent an actual credit card or any other record), you’re immediately given a range of customisation options which exceed the offerings of other programs. Change the colour of your card, add a custom .ico icon file, or even a sound effect to make each entry unique and easily recognisable. Cards can be created in the main set of your data store or in unlimited levels of subcategories, offering a level of organisation which is simply unavailable in other applications.

eWallet’s level of security is also impressive. With frequent requests for your passcode, you can be sure that no one can simply pick up your PDA and gain access to your cards. eWallet offers 256-bit encryption where some of its competitors still don’t encrypt your data at all. It also offers you the option to set password hints on individual items, a handy and popular data-protection technique often employed on websites. With top level stability, eWallet can be relied on to stand up to the job, even if you use your virtual wallet application frequently.

As you may be able to tell, we were pretty happy with this version of eWallet! It has so few flaws that the biggest issue we had was with the non-alphabetic listing of icons in the card-editing screen – hardly a critical issue. Synchronisation via SyncPro is actually far better than using ActiveSync, given that it doesn’t need to upload/download the entire database each time it syncs: SyncPro is capable of only updating the latest changes you’ve made, saving you precious time.

eWallet performs its core role with simplicity and ease of use and then offers you a higher level of customisation than any of its competitors. It’s not only the best in its category but one of the few absolute ‘must have’ programs for Palm, Pocket PC and Windows Smartphones. With practically no negative points, it just can’t get a higher recommendation!

We're always being told that Palm is now pretty much a dead platform but if you're still using one of these devices you needn't worry too much that you're falling behind the times because there are plenty of ways to customize your handset to freshen it up a bit.

TouchLauncher provides you with the power to transform your Palm to resemble something far more modern and cutting-edge, namely, the iPhone. In order to start skinning your OS you'll need to install the application file and the iFone icon set, both of which come bundled together in the same Zip.

Before you launch the app you get the chance to scan the memory of your PDA in order to automatically add icons of applications into TouchLauncher and remove deleted applications from the program. Once you finally get the program running you'll be staggered by the quality of icons in this pack, which are remarkable faithful to the Apple device. In fact, it left me wondering how Steve Jobs would react if he clapped eyes on TouchLauncher (no doubt a phone call to his lawyer would be foremost in his mind.)

The software is highly customizable and you can not only select icons for individual for each each of your installed applications from your icon sets, but also to categorize and change the name that appears underneath each utility of icon. Make sure you have plenty of RAM allocated on your device though, because TouchLauncher is a bit of a memory-hogger.

SplashPhoto is an application that allows you to easily store, organize and view your best pictures on your handheld device.

One of the most noteworthy program features is the fact that it's just so easy to use when it comes to introducing new pictures. Thanks to its application which resides in Windows, you simply need to load the image and then select "Install", then you will automatically be able to view this picture on your Palm!!

The interface supports 12 pictures on the screen at the same time, as well as the creation of categories in order to organize your pictures in whatever way suits you best.

I love a good read, but there are times when its impossible to carry a bulky hardback around with me. These days however, this doesn't have to be too much of a problem because there are plenty of ways to enjoy a good read without physically having a book with you. eReader provides you with a way of displaying documents and eBooks on your Palm to peruse anywhere you like.

ZLauncher is one of a wide range of launcher applications, designed to help you manage your Palm PDA and launch its applications from a simpler and more user friendly interface. What makes ZLauncher special in its class is the variety of extra tools and features it brings to your Palm’s desktop.

The first feature to really impress in ZLauncher is its ability to launch programs from a storage card. This function allows you to move your applications to an external card and run them from there, even if they were originally installed to your device’s built-in memory. The logic of moving and running applications in this way is that by freeing up space on your Palm’s internal memory, you have more RAM free, thus helping your programs run faster and more efficiently.

The file explorer aspect of ZLauncher is a massive improvement on the native Palm file manager, providing features such as ‘tabbed’ browsing (allowing you to view multiple storage devices or folders in one window), and the ‘detail’ view mode which is reminiscent of Windows Explorer’s ‘details’ option and displays data on your files (size, date modified etc) alongside the filenames.. The addition of the Trash Bin (very similar to the Windows Recycle Bin) is a welcome improvement, as is ZLauncher’s ability to delete entire folder trees, an option curiously absent from some other launcher applications.

ZLauncher includes a themes option, allowing you to skin the program interface, customise icon sets and set pretty much any image as your device’s wallpaper. After changing icon sets, however, we noted a marked increase in ZLauncher’s memory consumption as well as various issues with icons appearing and disappearing. While the customization feature is a good idea, it seems that by using it you significantly increase the load on your Palm device. This is a shame but at the end of the day, themes and icons aren’t deal breakers in an application specifically designed to help you launch applications and manage your files.

In all, ZLauncher adds some seriously useful functions to your Palm’s desktop. While its memory load and customization options need some improvement, ZLauncher’s core features make it the best all round choice in its class.

The Attention Manager was a feature introduced in Palm OS 4.0 to co-ordinate information from different applications. It's not perfect though, and many users are annoyed by the fact that you don't get continuous alerts to things like new SMS messages or missed calls.

Attention Grabber is designed to change that, working as a hack for the Attention Manager. The main interface in Attention Grabber looks pretty dull, but it's functional and easy to use. You just need to set the program's state to 'Enabled' and choose the time interval between alerts.

You then get to choose how Attention Grabber will alert you, and can select 'Beep', 'LED' or 'Vibrate' (or a combination of these). You can also specify what time you want to activate the application, so it automatically comes into effect at this hour.

That's about it really, so Attention Grabber isn't really a powerful app with its own set of features, rather a free add-on that addresses a shortcoming in the Attention Grabber.

Where Am I? (or WAI for short) is a small application that interfaces your Bluetooth GPS receiver with map software (recently with Google Maps Mobile - GMM). What it recently does is query GPS about your current location and then tells GMM to show that position on the map, giving you a taste of real GPS based navigation software.

One of the most important skills for musicians of any kind is the ability to correctly identify intervals by ear. Taking care of your bank accounts has got to be one of the most mundane day-to-day chores. Install Ma Tirelire on your Palm though, and things get much easier.

Despite its rather silly name, Ma Tirelire is actually a seriously comprehensive mobile money management tool, allowing you to make financial decisions while you're on the move. You can set up multiple accounts in Ma Tirelire, allowing you to organize your personal, business, or archived accounts simply in tandem.

The text-heavy user interface is a little daunting at first and it takes a while to get used to the location of the various menus and commands Ma Tirelire has to offer. Once you do though, you'll be amazed at how powerful the application is. You can manage everything from day-to-day transactions, through transactions splits, to inter-account transfers.

With society pushing us to be online and available in our every waking moment, it is hardly surprising that there are a plethora of instant messaging programs available for PDAs and mobile phones. IM+ offers connection to a wide range of networks without becoming too bloated or over-complex. The first thing we noticed after installing IM+ was the simplicity of its user interface. As soon as the program opens, you can get to work configuring your accounts. IM+ lets you access the popular MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AOL (AIM), Jabber and Google Talk networks, meaning that whoever you need to stay in touch with, IM+ will be able to help you out.

On Windows applications featuring such a range of connectivity, it’s normal to see a complex list of options when the configuration process starts. IM+ simplifies the process of setting up your accounts, and beyond message alerts, contains practically no options to configure. This may put off more advanced users who enjoy tinkering with their accounts but we thought it was a good move on the part of Shape Services (IM+’s creators). The only problem we noticed when setting up our account details was that the ‘backspace’ key on our device’s touch screen keyboard didn’t work. This is of course a small issue, but it slowed us down when we made a mistake.

The contact list display (or ‘Roster’) in IM+ should be immediately recognisable to anyone who’s used an instant messenger service before. Giving you the choice of whether to view all your contacts or just those online, IM+ also sorts your contacts by groups if requested. Selecting an online contact immediately initiates a chat with them, while the holding your stylus on the contact will provide some limited options referring to that contact, such as ‘rename’, ‘delete’ and ‘info’. We were disappointed that ‘info’ didn’t try to display a contact’s full profile rather than just their email address. We thought that a more full extract of the contact’s online profile would have been useful, at least including their birthday, homepage and interests.

Entering the text for sending messages was simple enough. IM+ allows you to copy and paste text from other applications into your chat window; particularly useful if you’re using the program to collaborate on a work project, or even just to send your friend a link. IM+ also supports the most popular emoticons for instant messaging, for those times when words just can’t convey your feelings.

Up against some stiff competition, IM+ is an excellent chat program for your Palm PDA. While it has a couple of small issues and omissions, it is easy to use, relatively small and very stable. In other words, an excellent way of staying in contact even when you’ve got a good excuse not to!

Palm PDA users are often on the move and this explains the large number of applications geared towards helping travellers wherever they go. One of the most successful travel programs available for handheld computers is this free guide to the subway systems in over 300 cities worldwide.

Métro has a very basic interface which can be a little tricky to read if you haven’t taken a look at the user guide. Once used to the controls, though, the average user will have no further trouble with this program. Use it to plan journeys, guide you between subway and railway stations, or to help you find places of interest such as museums or government buildings.

For such a small application, it holds a surprising amount of details and with frequent updates, you don’t need to worry about out-of-date information.
