Twitter @ Desktop 1.1.5

Twitter @ Desktop allows you to quickly get the latest Twitter updates quickly without any fuss, clutter, or spam. The application bypasses all fancy graphics, attached pictures, or linked videos. Instead, Twitter @ Desktop delivers pure information as Unicode plain text. Twitter @ Desktop is in every way the complete antithesis of <taglink type="program" country="en" id="79546">TweetDeck</taglink>.

Twitter @ Desktop initial installation is a little abrasive. It automatically requires the <taglink type="program" country="en" id="36203">Babylon Toolbar</taglink> to complete installation, and will blackout options until you fully comply. This can easily be mistaken as a form of intrusive adware, although removing this secondary program wasn’t an issue. There were no obvious impacts to Windows or the Tweeting experience.

Twitter @ Desktop links into your Twitter account via your default web browser and requests authorization during each session. Twitter generates a pin upon this request which is then used to open the software.

Twitter @ Desktop is completely bare bones. There is no auto refresh or real time updates. Instead you will have to press the "latest tweets" button to reload the feed. Users’ handles will be on the left hand column along with their tweet on the right hand column. All other pertinent information is missing: this includes their profile picture, user name, time of posting, location, device information, or retweet source. This can make it difficult to follow long and intricate conversations.

The amount of tweets displayed in Twitter @ Desktop are rather short, totaling around the last 30 from people you follow. Even after hitting the refresh button it took too long to get the latest feed, requiring three or four presses to update correctly. This may be adequate for non-active Twitter users, but for those with a Facebook mentality Twitter @ Desktop doesn’t offer enough.

Twitter @ Desktop contains the absolute minimum interaction to gain an updated Twitter feed. If you constantly check Twitter you’ll want a more detiled application.

Download Twitter @ Desktop 1.1.5 in Softonic

Babylon 10.0.1

Babylon is a complete dictionary and translation solution, perfect for anyone who frequently works with multiple languages.

Babylon works from various aspects. The main interface is a translation window. From here you can access all the program features, as well as the configuration options. There is also a floating module which will appear when you ask Babylon for a translation. The whole module can be disabled if you want.

No matter which option you use, Babylon provides access to a standard multi-lingual dictionary (to which you can add an unlimited number of additional dictionaries), a text/document translation feature, a unit converter, web search and, of course, access to Babylon's paid translation services.

You can also use Babylon inside applications and online as an on-the-spot translation tool. You can configure the feature in the options area, but the default hotkey is Ctrl+right click. This will allow you to translate whatever word you happen to be hovering over or have highlighted.

In all, Babylon is a very complete tool for language enthusiasts. The translations are accurate (in the context of machine translation) and system-wide integration means that you'll never have to wonder about a word again, no matter what you are working on.

If you have to work with foreign languages on a regular basis, Babylon is a comprehensive, well-integrated tool for the job.

Download Babylon 10.0.1 in Softonic

Facebook Video Chat 1

Facebook Video Chat is a third party plugin for Facebook that allows you to video and audio chat via Facebook.

Of course, video and audio chatting are now possible in Facebook thanks to Skype integration and Facebook Video Chat simply offers an alternative way of doing it. It simply adds 4 extra icons to your Facebook chat dialog window - a webcam, a microphone, a games icon and a smiley.

The installation of Facebook Video Chat is a bit suspicious however. It tries to install the Babylon toolbar, make Babylon your default webpage and make Babylon your default search engine. However, even if you deselect the check boxes, it still places a Babylon installer on your desktop although doesn't appear to install any of the components.

When you've finished installation, your browser will open automatically with a message of congratulations telling you to log-into Facebook. If you're using Firefox, Facebook Video Chat also requires installing an add-on which it does automatically although this requires re-starting your browser afterwards.

To start a video chat using Facebook Video Chat, just open a conversation window with a contact and click on the webcam icon. A message will be sent to the recipient asking them to initiate a webchat. Obviously, this requires them to have a webcam installed or a speaker installed if you want to start an audio conversation.

The games icon prompts you to start a number of basic board games when clicked on such as chess, darts or snooker. Finally, the smiley icon simply sends a smiley to the recipient - not exactly sophisticated.

Facebook Video Chat isn't really necessary now that Skype is integrated with Facebook but if you're really having troubles with Facebook's integrated video and audio chat, it may be worth a try.

Download Facebook Video Chat 1 in Softonic

Lingoes 2.7.6.1

On the whole, Lingoes is an interesting application which combines a comprehensive dictionary with a translator service (while looking and feeling mysteriously similar to its competitor, Babylon). There are also some useful tools like the periodic table, an abbreviation chart and an irregular verbs one, plus an international time zone converter, a dialing codes directory, a weights & measures converter and to end a currency converter.

Theoretically the most useful tool is that by pressing CTRL+ right click on whatever word you have on your screen, a pop-up window should appear with the definition of that word, a search tool for a deeper definition and also an audio file with the correct pronunciation. The disappointing aspect of this feature is that it doesn't work with a lot of words (unfortunately, I have to say, the majority), even if they appear in the list of definitions that Lingoes has in its database. I think this is a major bug as it invalidates massively the application's main utility which would be to have an always-available dictionary without having to change window.

The program leans on Google for the translation function which I find to be weak as many words are not translated correctly or not even found.

Because of strange performance issues, Lingoes is not worth using if you're just looking for an on-the-fly dictionary or translator. Some of its other features are really useful, though.

Download Lingoes 2.7.6.1 in Softonic

Works in all browsers, Office windows, PDF documents and many others, including places where regular copy/paste doesn';t work as as in folder trees, status bars, protected documents, buttons, applications interfaces, error messages and more.

WordCaptureX is not OCR based so it's very fast. Only 10 lines of code are needed to integrate it into your dictionay or translation tool. It can be used in VB, C, C++,.

Net languages, Delphi or any other COM enabled progamming language. The scenario: The user underlines or CTRL-clicks any word on screen and your dictionary pops-up with the definition or the translation of the captured word.

WordcaptureX allows capturing an entire line of text. It also highlights the captured word(s). We provide C++, Visual Basic 6, Visual Basic. Glossing over the unusable interface and the lack of self-explicable icons, the application simply doesn’t do what it says.

Or to be more specific, it does translate what you write in it, but so badly, you might as well invent the text in other languages on your own, even without knowing anything about them.

In case you would like to try it, what conventionally is understood to be the page-refresh icon, in this case allows you to change language.

You click on this to see the flags on the top changing, until you get the combination you want. The missile icon, should give the go ahead to translate the text, unless you want to have some more fun and tick the automatic translation function, which translates what you write in real-time.

We all need good translator programs, but look elsewhere as this one is not one of those. Babylon or Lingoes are surely better alternatives.

Download Traductor LIVE in Softonic
