Font Magnifier is a simple piece of software that could have really big benefits for many people.

Font Magnifier is really easy to install and use, with font sizes changed by a scrolling bar and a preview of how big the altered text will be. Now, the app has upped its game even further with this release of version 5.

Opera Mini 5 offers a faster and more powerful browsing experience than any previous version of the app. The small and compact program has borrowed much more from its desktop-based big brother this time, so if you enjoy using Opera on your PC or Mac then you can now look forward to a similarly smooth ride on your mobile.

The user interface in Opera Mini 5 is more usable than ever. This is thanks to the addition of a Speed Dial feature, whereby you can set one-click shortcuts for up to nine of your favorite sites. Just like in the desktop version, these display thumbnail previews of the sites to make things as clear and simple as possible.

Easy browsing

Opera Mini utilizes a tab-based interface, meaning that you can load multiple pages at once simply by clicking on the tab icon at the top of the interface. You can thumb through the pages you have open using the left and right direction buttons. Other navigational aids have also been added, such as an auto-complete feature in the address bar and a built-in search bar. Unfortunately, the search bar only features two sources - Google and Wikipedia.

Viewing pages in Opera Mini 5 is a delight. As with the previous version, you can opt to view the whole web page on screen or move the cursor over a particular part of the page and tap to zoom in (there are only two levels of zoom though). Load times are as impressive as ever thanks to Opera's unique server-side rendering technology.

Fully customizable

For those who love to tinker around with stuff, Opera Mini 5 is sure to please because the program is simply rammed with options. You can alter image quality, font size, and fullscreen browsing, and there are a wealth of privacy settings too. The program even has its own password manager.

Opera Mini 5 is a slimline, easy-to-use browser that will significantly speed up your mobile internet experience

Download Opera Mini 5.1 in Softonic

OpenBeak (was TwitterBerry) 1.2

TwitterBerry was one of the first Twitter apps, and as such it once had a large following. Since then, countless other programs have joined the fray, meaning that TwitterBerry moved down the pecking order.

OpenBeak is the new name for TwitterBerry, and is designed to be a more powerful solution than its predecessor, while retaining its ease of use. As soon as you load OpenBeak, you're presented with a blank 'What are you doing?' screen, where you can jot down your thoughts to share with the Twitterverse. But if you don't feel like talking, there's plenty more you can do by hitting the menu key.

You can peruse your friends, yours and the public timeline, then reply to posts, retweet them, or add them to favorites, all with just a couple of clicks. OpenBeak makes it easy to follow and unfollow people and the app lets you search Twitter by keyword or via current trending topics.

Another neat feature of OpenBeak is its integrated camera support on devices running BlackBerry OS 4.6+. You can take a picture and then instantly post it to yfrog, Twitgoo, TwitPic or Zannel with a minimal amount of hassle.

There are some useful configuration settings within OpenBeak, such as the ability to change the font size, which I would recommend because the default size is far too big. You can also choose to view timelines in fixed or variable size.

On the downside, the user interface in OpenBeak is pretty bland, and the app is still lacking in advanced features. For instance, you can't access user profiles through the app at present.

OpenBeak is an improvement on TwitterBerry but it's still not quite as comprehensive as it should be.

Download OpenBeak (was TwitterBerry) 1.2 in Softonic

However, you’ll often find that making an effort to use the local language, whether to seal the deal or just to order a coffee, can make a big difference in the way people welcome you.

The Concise Oxford English Dictionary from Mobile Systems is a tool that can help you if you’ve already made the effort to learn some Spanish beforehand. It’s not a traveller’s phrase-book but it does contain precise translations for more than 170,000 words and phrases, all in a simple and easy-to-use interface which guarantees instant results.

The way that the dictionary is presented makes it easy to locate the info you’re looking for. Its default start-up screen is a list of the first half-dozen or so words beginning with ‘A’, and a text box which allows you to start searching for words immediately. We weren’t sure about displaying the full list of words as a default view: how many times will you choose to scroll through the full list rather than searching for your term? But as we typed, the dictionary filtered the words on-screen, narrowing down the choices until there were just a handful to pick from. In the end, we felt that this method of displaying information could well serve as a time-saver, and it’s therefore a must-have feature on any business dictionary.

When you open a specific record for a word, the translation is provided in a clear manner, using variations in font-strength and colour to indicate the various parts of the word’s entry. As well as the traditional Castilian Spanish (from Spain), twenty regional variations are included in the dictionary’s database, meaning that you can safely avoid the embarrassment of misusing Mexican slang in Spain, and vice versa.

Some small gripes included not being able to select terms for cross-referencing within the dictionary, and the lack of more encyclopaedic definitions. However, both these features would have taken up more precious space on your phone’s memory card, a sacrifice which on balance wouldn’t really be justified.

The Concise Oxford Spanish Dictionary is a well designed, simple and easy-to-use tool for English speakers who need a mobile dictionary solution. Automatic updates and a ‘word of the day’ random term option are well executed, handy features which seal the deal on this reviewer’s recommendation.

Download Concise Oxford Spanish Dictionary 4.10 (S60) in Softonic

Sunnysoft Contacts is an interesting contact manager with plenty of options that make life very simple even if you're someone who has more contacts on your phone than you could possibly need. The best feature is its quick search facility which allows you speedy access to any name and number on your mobile and then from there you can carry out a series of actions including calling, messaging and emailing within the click of a button.

There are a number of quick options you can use to look-up a contact: type in the first letter of their first name, surname, the first digits of their telephone number, the first letters of their company name or the beginning of their email address. You can conduct these searches at the same time if you're skilled enough. The software also comes with a very usable, enlarged keyboard option which makes these searches much easier.

Download Sunnysoft Contacts 1.1 in Softonic

Series 40 Theme Studio 1.2

I'm a big fan of Nokia Series 40 phones, but the one problem I have with them is that they all look very similar.

If you fancy customizing your phone to stand out from the crowd a bit, you could install a theme for your device. However, those who really dare to be different choose to create their own themes and the Series 40 Theme Studio allows you to do just that.

The Windows-based application - an official Nokia software package - lets you change virtually every part of your display, from the folder icons to the battery indicator. You can tweak colors, change fonts and add custom pictures to set your phone apart from the rest.

The user interface is split into two halves - the left containing a menu of all the things you can change, and the right a live preview window displaying the current state of the theme. The degree you can customize your device really is limited only by your imagination. Actually, it's also limited by your patience because the user interface in the Series 40 Theme Studio isn't very user friendly. The menus are cluttered and poorly-labeled and this program is crying out for drag-and-drop functionality.

If you have the persistence to master the cumbersome interface, you should be able to pull off some cool designs though.

Download Series 40 Theme Studio 1.2 in Softonic
