The backups can be saved to a set of files on a local or network drive, or directly to most CD or DVD drives (which will create a bootable restore disc). When needed, you can simply restore the snapshot image and the partition or volume will be back as it was before.

Using the free PHYLock add-on utility, you can continue to use your computer while the backup is locked to a point-in-time. This eliminates the inconsistencies typically experienced while backing up a partition that is in use.

Download Image for Windows 2.13 in Softonic

Note that this is not a hacking tool - all files and registry entries are protected as they would be if you installed the unedited version only with the changes you select.

The program works by configuring the installation directly before the installation itself, meaning you'll have to remake the ISO and reinstall it. This method is much cleaner, not to mention easier and more logical than doing it after installation on every reinstall. You can select which components to remove but note that unchecking a component will not remove it. The developers say this has been done because not all components are supported by the program and disabling the check boxes removes any confusion. Be very careful when removing components however because they cannot be reinstalled afterwards. The program warns you to be careful with major components by displaying a "Caution!" warning label when you hover over it.

This is a great tool for Vista users but use it with care because if you remove something you didn't mean to, you'll end up doing the whole Vista installation over again.

Download vLite 1.2 Beta in Softonic

OEM CDs lack the hard disk partitioning tools, system restore and other useful tools.

Although there are others who have created these "all in 1" CDs, these are built by some specialized man who doesn't know exactly what you want or need. These CDs are also of a general nature not to mention huge and lengthy to download. MultiBoot CDs being sold by others may not satisfy the individual needs or demands you require.

EasyBoot is an integrated tool to create MultiBoot, Menu driven CDs & DVDs with native language. It has the ability to automatically produce boot image files, and generate the ISO file as well. Using your CD/DVD Recording software such as Nero or Roxio to Record the ISO, you get a bootable CD/DVD that completely belongs to you. It means you don’t have to burn a new CD every time you want just to try a new distribution of Linux, for example.

The main program’s screen is very simple and nicely designed, although you can’t resize the windows. You can either chose to install a right-click association with ISO image files or to run a LiveCD directly by browsing your hard drive and finding the file.

It takes a while to load a whole operating system like one of the Linux distributions, but at least you can see how they are, and try them without altering your computer in any way. You’ll have to take into account that it’s an emulation, so it will never be as responsive as the real OS, but it’s another option you have to avoid burning CDs you might not use more than once.

Have a look at as many Linux LiveCD distributions as you want with MobaLiveCD. Thanks to its emulator engine, it lets you try LiveCD directly from Windows, without having to burn ISO files on CDs.

Download MobaLiveCD 1.2 in Softonic

For one they take up less space and two, they're often much easier to restore than conventional backups. A drive image Disk image file basically contains an exact copy of a hard drive, partition or logical disk and can be created on the fly. You can then restore these images at any time on a removal disk or to replace your corrupted, lost or damaged version. R-Drive Image does this fairly simply by creating a special bootable diskette to restore partitions. To restore only certain files, you only have to connect the image as a virtual disk (via a USB connection for example) and copy those files to their new location. For anyone that doesn't like Norton's drive image utility, this is a much easier to use and cheaper package. It's ideal for those that have suffered a major data loss Using R-Drive Image, you can completely and rapidly restore your system after heavy data loss caused by an operating system crash, virus attack or hardware failure. In addition, it's ideal for system administrators that need to setup large numbers of computers in one go.

A very powerful tool for administrators and those that want to be sure they don't waste valuable time if their operating system crashes.

Download R-Drive Image in Softonic

Norton Ghost 12.0

Symantec is a company that has been subject to criticism for dropping the ball with recent versions of their anti-virus and internet security software, so does their backup solution show any proof that they are building on their vast experience and that their popularity and reputation is somewhat justified? At first sight, it’s clear that the interface has followed in the footsteps of every other Norton product, meaning that you get a user friendly tabbed based window with a healthy quantity of wizards thrown in for just about every operation.

Unfortunately the make-over seems to have just touched the surface and as a result, each tool you want to use will open a new window. Not only can this lead to a cluttered desktop with lingering dialog boxes but may also cause your system to slow significantly or at worst, crash. Used properly though, Norton Ghost will let you backup your entire hard-drive to another partition, an external, or a networked drive on a regular scheduled basis and also gives you a variety of ways to restore the reserve copies should the worst happen.

For anyone with huge amounts of data to backup, the option to compress everything will come as a blessing and for those with sensitive documents there is password protection and encryption. What’s more, the processes involved have been completely dumbed down, with less jargon and step by step instructions. While this benefits those who want a backup solution that they install and forget about, it strikes more advanced users right where it hurts. You can’t even select what folders to back up and instead must be satisfied that it’s all or nothing.

Although the program didn’t seem to be entirely stable, there was no obvious hit to system performance, which was one of the main problems with other Symantec software. Norton Ghost will put your mind at rest with a comprehensive copy of your hard drive, but if you prefer to be in complete control or to restrict your backup to only your essential files, then you should look elsewhere.

Download Norton Ghost 12.0 in Softonic

PeToUSB 3.0.0.7

Wouldn't it be great if you could autoboot programs from your Pendrive? PeToUSB is a simple Windows application for formatting and making bootable USB Flash Memory Drives and USB HardDisks.

Normally, it's not possible to do this on a Pendrive but PeToUSB works by creating a FAT16 partition so that the device auto-executes in Windows. However, you'll have to make sure that your system's BIOS supports this function - most modern PC's do but there are some that will not.

One of the advantages this presents is when you've had a major hard drive error or have had problems booting from Windows. It's also useful if you need to run a virus scan without starting Windows in the case of really serious problems. A simple, powerful program that's only let down by the fact that it won't work with all BIOS.

Download PeToUSB 3.0.0.7 in Softonic

JetBee Free 4.0.5

JetBee attempts to be one of those programs that burns absolutely everything. For the most part, it achieves this aim and makes burning easy and simple. To get started, you simply add files to the required project which can be burned onto a CD data disc, Audio disc, DVD disc or UDF disc.

After that, it's simply a case of clicking the 'Burn' button and you're done. Of course, there are plenty of configurable parameters too but in the case of the simplest burn, it's as easy as that. You can also burn ISO images, copy discs or save disc images to burn later. It also has a handy wizard to guide you through the process of creating an ISO image from your files a

The developers claim that JetBee supports all popular disc burning devices: CD burners, DVD burners, Blu-Ray burners and HD-DVD burners. However, there seems to be no definitve list of compatible devices on the developer site so this is not guaranteed. The only problem I had was burning some files with codecs that the program would not recognise. It was easily solved however by updating Windows codecs to write MP3, WMA and other compressed files.

If you need an all-in-one burning solution with a simple interface, then JetBee does the job well.

Download JetBee Free 4.0.5 in Softonic

Migrate Easy includes a tool to create a bootable version of the program, in case something goes wrong with your PC.

Download Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 in Softonic

Ultimate Boot CD 4.1.0

You need the Ultimate Boot CD if you want to:

Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.

Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it is still much much faster to run your diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather than wait for the tool to load from the floppy drive.

Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid digging into the dusty box to look for the right floppy disk, but simply run them all from a single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!

When you boot up from the CD, a text-based menu will be displayed, and you will be able to select the tool you want to run. The selected tool actually boots off a virtual floppy disk created in memory.

Download Ultimate Boot CD 4.1.0 in Softonic

You can use it as backup copy of your most important documents or an emergency recovery disk in case of computer failure, as these copies created with XXClone are self-bootable.

Take a look at what the program has to offer:

Makes a self-bootable clone of Windows system disk

Can restore the self-bootability in many cases.

Supports common internal disk drives (IDE, SATA, SCSI)

Supports external USB/FIREWIRE drives (good for a laptop)

Operates in regular Windows environment, no need to go to DOS mode

Acronis True Image 10 Home

Acronis has always been one of the leading disk backup and restore applications. Version 10 brings with it a solid selection of tools to let you save all your essential information safely. Let’s take a look at what this program has to offer.

Backup is certainly Acronis’ strong point. You can create a complete disk image of your operating system, applications, user data and settings and backup all your Outlook data (emails, contacts, tasks). Whilst creating a backup you can select or exclude files according to their extension. Acronis also allows you to backup the settings of certain applications.

The detailed wizard interface makes the whole backup process pretty straightforward. If you already have a backup file of all your data, Acronis can create a differential file and update your backup with all the latest changes instead of creating a new file from scratch. The Snap Restore function will allow you to use your system while it is being restored.

Acronis also introduces a “Secure Zone” feature where you can create a protected partition on your hard drive and save sensible information and backups. The “Secure Zone” can be resized at will to accommodate more files.

Let’s move on to the recovery features in the program. Creating bootable media ensures that you have an external solution to reboot your PC in case of a major breakdown. This process is as simple as working with the backup tools. You can choose to create a safe or a full version (twice as big as the safe version), but it is probably best to create both. Acronis offers many bootable media possibilities like FTP, CDR or DVD. You can clone multiple hard drives and add extra partitions to make more space on your PC. If your operating system fails, easily boot and start the recovery process simply by pressing F11.

Naturally, Acronis True Image comes with a scheduling feature to automatically handle these tasks for you. It also offers password protection for your files and folders. The program will log all the actions that you undertake, making it easy to check the last time you did a backup or what files you saved. Overall, we were impressed by the speed, simplicity and choice of actions present in Acronis True Image. The only downsides to it were the lengthy installation process and not being able to handle multiple tasks at the same time.

Download Acronis True Image 10 Home in Softonic
