One of the coolest features of iTunes is the album browser which really makes your music collection feel tangible rather than just a load of MP3 files.

CoverFlow has taken this concept and aims to add the same aesthetic to music collections of you'll find in iTunes. CoverFlow allows you to browse your albums artwork using a variety of sources on the Net via your MP3 tags. These include Synergy, Clutter and of course, Amazon.com so you've got a good chance of finding the artwork for your particular album.

CoverFlow genuinely makes looking through your music collection much more fun and intuitive without the need for iTunes. And like iTunes, if the album cover is not in any of the databases, you can add your own album cover from your JPG collection. It would have been nice to have a bit more album info attached with the album covers but it's no big drawback.

CoverFlow gives non iTunes users a real iTunes feel without the bloatedness of the classic music app and breathes new life into your music collection.

Download CoverFlow 0.92 in Softonic

It will essentially expand the functionalities of the browser's search tool, like adding a thumbnail next to search results or adding the search engine name in the search box. Glims comes with a large list of search engines, which you can rearrange at will and select from a drop down in the search box. It includes less conventional search engines like Facebook, MTV or Expedia among other more known choices.

Glims will also allow you to display link and search word suggestions. These will appear in a black bubble under your search box. I quite liked this tool and found it very useful.

The thumbnail feature was the only one not to work properly, as not only did I find that it slowed my browser, but the thumbnails themselves did not display properly.

Find the search feature in Safari a little dull? Glims should definitely spice things up a bit.

Download Glims for Safari 1.0 Beta 8 in Softonic

SuperDocker lets you play around with how key functions of Leopard are displayed.

Before taking a look at SuperDocker, I worried that the application was going to be another of the countless Dock modifiers that you find for Leopard. Luckily, SuperDocker not only sticks to that section of your Mac but also lets you modify elements in your Finder, Safari browser, Time Machine and others like iCal, iChat or the capture format. Most of the functions that you can set in SuperDocker are already present in your Mac, but hidden, so having the app is great help to access them quickly. Each setting is easy to work with, and you often only have to choose between whether to display or hide elements. For others, a slider bar lets you easily adjust to the style you like best.

In all, even though you shouldn't expect anything highly advanced, SuperDocker will give you quick access to hidden display options for for your Leopard.

Download SuperDocker 3.01 in Softonic

The application comes with a large choice of feeds, but you can easily add your own and remove the ones you don't want. Instead of previewing items in the interface, a preview window pops up, in a Quick Look fashion. Headline includes its very own video player, so you watch videos and listen to audio items in the preview window.

The search box at the top is particularly responsive and useful if you don't want to scroll down your list of items. You'll also find a button at the bottom left which lets you switch between feeds and entries. You can mark items you like as favorites and share them via email or iChat.

The compact size comes at a cost, which is no browser view. However it's worth sacrificing it for an interface that stands out from other typical desktop RSS readers.

Opera 9.52

Following the release of new versions of both Internet Explorer and Firefox, the infamous 'browser wars' are flaring up again. Despite both Firefox 1.5 and the Beta of IE7 making significant strides, it would be be foolish to think this was a two-horse race. While gaining a good reputation with geeks and power users, Opera has long been a bit-part player among the big boys of the browser world. However, if this preview release is anything to go by, the Norwegian-built browser could finally be ready to punch with the heavyweights.

Opera has been pioneering new ways of browsing the web for some time. It has had tabbed browsing since the days before tabbed browsing was cool and developed the innovative 'mouse gestures' control system, where you navigate through the web just by holding the mouse button and flicking your wrist. The developers even dabbled with a multi-pane interface for viewing several pages within one interface.

The good news is that Opera has lost none of its appetite for innovation, and version 9 is packed with new goodies that will have the programmers at Mozilla and Microsoft choking on their doughnuts. For starters the app runs much quicker than the previous release, making it arguably the quickest browser around (except perhaps for Safari) at rendering pages. Incredibly, despite this boost in performance, the program appears to use less memory than version 8.5, making it far less draining on system resources than Firefox and IE.

In terms of features Opera is the gift that keeps on giving. New to the program comes OSX Tiger-style 'widgets', allowing you to check news, convert currency, view the weather and so on through a series of draggable pop-ups which anchor themselves in front of the browser. Although there aren’t many widgets to choose from at present, this is sure to change once the tech-minded Opera fans start developing more.

Another great addition to Opera 9 is BitTorrent support, allowing you to download torrents directly within the browser – a feature that amazingly no one had thought of before. This system works very smoothly, which makes us wonder why RSS feed reading support in Opera is still so poor.

Among the other new treats within the program is a nifty new search feature which lets you add any search engine to the search bar in the main toolbar. This means you can instantly access searches within your favorite online destinations (Softonic, for instance).

Tabbed browsing remains, although some users may be annoyed to discover that Opera has added close tab buttons to the tabs themselves rather than as a separate button. Having said this, the new web page preview thumbnails that appear when you rollover a tab are a real masterstroke. Mouse gestures are still there too, along with the addition of Total Recall-style voice commands – another example of how cutting-edge this browser is.

Opera's developers have been keen to ramp up security features too, and although they aren't highly original, the new content blocking and pop-up blocking functions serve their purpose effectively. What's more, it's refreshing to see a browser that embraces the latest web standards so freely, with the latest release boasting support for CSS 2.1 and CSS 3 tags.

The browser is remarkably stable and is far better behaved than Internet Explorer 7. Combined with its speed, innovative features and standards support, Opera is undoubtedly web software's best-kept secret, and the final release may prove to be even better than Firefox. Don't say anything though, or everyone will want it.

Download Opera 9.52 in Softonic

The application can show your photos, videos, music and bookmarks found in your Mac's folders. The top of the interface shows the different folders, which you can open up via a drop down arrow to reveal subfolders. The main part shows a preview of all files in a folder. We quite like the sliding bar, which allows you to easily zoom in and out of files. You can also drag and drop any file that you wish to see in iMedia Browser.

We found that iMedia cleverly manages to unite all media files under one interface. And yet, we sometimes felt that browsing movies or music in the application was not all intuitive. For some file types it just seems more natural to browse from separate applications like iTunes for music. Because iMedia fits all your media files in one place, it can feel a bit cluttered. However some people will find this much more useful to browse through their files quickly and get preview of what is on their Mac.

Get Tube lets you save videos in four different formats (mp4, mov, mp3, avi). The download process itself is a little unintuitive: not only does it only work with Firefox or Safari, but you also need to have one of the browsers open to a video to be able to download. Downloading with Get Tube can take a little while, but you'll be able to follow the whole operation thanks to a process bar.

Get Tube won't work if there are multiple videos opened up in the browser. Similarly try to avoid having multiple tabs opened as to seems to confuse the program.

VectorDesigner offers a simple, multi-windowed interface from which you can use all sorts of tools and shapes like rectangles, stars, polygons or bezier creations. Boolean tools offered by the program are easy to work with and let you combine your different shapes in all sorts of ways. Vector drawing is perfect for creating posters, stickers, t-shirts...anything onto which you can apply a design. VectorDesigner takes this into account and lets you constrain text to any shape.

The program includes many filters and compositions, however some effects will only work if you're running Mac OS X 10.5. One element we did enjoy was the Flickr browser tool, by which you can find images in the photo sharing site.

Now it seems most people prefer to chat with friends on social networks like Facebook. Not only can you much more things, but most of them also include a built chat tool, that replaces the need for an IM client.

Gabtastik is a site specific browser (SSB) built so you can use these online chat services in a separate window. To translate: Gabtastik lets you use online chat services just like if they were separate applications.

The interface is clean and Gabtastik lets you open up multiple chats in multiple tabs. So far it only works with Google Talk, Facebook Chat and meebo. If you use an iPhone you'll probably be interested in learning that it also handles the Hahlo iPhone Twitter webapp.

Gabtastik uses very little RAM and its nice having all these online chat services in a separate window, instead of hidden away between various tabs of your browser. Obviously it's only limited to certain services, but if you use meebo, you'll have access to many more like MSN or ICQ.

Camino 1.6.3

Looking for an alternative to Apple's Safari or Mozilla's Firefox? Then you might just take the path to Camino.

This browser evolved from being a side project of Mozilla to turning out into a full fledged open source browser for Mac. Built over the Mozilla architecture, it functions in a very similar way as Firefox, is as secure, yet offers a different sort of interface.

Camino is fairly lightweight, at least I have never seen it use up as much memory as Firefox, and loads pages fairly quickly. The search box is fully customizable, so you can add, remove and reorder all the search engines your own way. The open source browser also offers very solid integration of Apple's Keychain technology for storing all your passwords and certificate.

Obviously the real drawback to Camino, and one that might turn off users is that, unlike Firefox, it doesn't offer addons. Like the Mozilla browser it will detect feeds for you and offers tabbed browsing.

If you're looking for a lightweight, fast and secure browser then Camino will suit you. Be aware that it doesn't handle extensions though.

Download Camino 1.6.3 in Softonic

Remote Buddy 1.11.1

Remote Buddy gives you a refreshing look at your media files on your Mac. Thanks to a sleek interface, you'll be able to browse through all your video, music photos and do much more. Remote Buddy also supports an impressive array of other hardware like the Apple Remote, and many mobile devices of which the latest additions are the iPhone and the iPod Touch. We also really liked how the program has an interface for each device.

Remote Buddy is fully customizable and you can change just about anything, like mapping buttons or creating your own actions. We really liked how you can create behaviors for each application, although this might be a bit too complex for inexperienced users. Thanks to its integrated file browser its very easy to look for files, although you may sometimes have to go back to the root folder. Overall an excellent program that boosts the remote control features of your Mac, whether you want to make presentations or just play any sort of media.

Remote Buddy is a top notch application to present and enjoy files on any sort of device.

Download Remote Buddy 1.11.1 in Softonic

CoverScout 2.3.8

With CoverScout, you can search album covers on Amazon, iTunes Music Store and Google Images. The result for each artwork search is displayed in the artwork inspector where you can effortlessly pick your favorite covers. Once your choice is made, simply apply it to your selected album. You can even search multiple albums at once.

CoverScout enhances its flexibility in terms of the search function. You are now able to search not only for artists but also entire albums. The right-click contextual menu adds some great features to CoverScout. Within the updated contextual menu you can now search for covers, play the selected track in iTunes, reveal the selected track in the finder and even remove the cover for the selected album or track.

As an added benefit, CoverScout includes a size slider, which is located between the library browser and the artwork inspector. It gives the possibility to resize the preview size of the artwork found. You can easily make CoverScout fit your needs. Your iTunes library is scanned and analyzed automatically once CoverScout is started. All albums can be clearly filtered based on their current cover-status.

Download CoverScout 2.3.8 in Softonic

Fluid 0.9.2.5

With Fluid you can access all your web applications from your desktop.

Ever used Prism or Webrunner? Just like these two applications, Fluid allows you to access all your web apps (like Facebook, Gmail or Campfire) from your desktop. Essentially, Fluid is a simple browser that hosts web applications in a very basic interface. Once you start it up, type the url of your web app in the window, select a name and location, press OK and you're ready to go. The advantage of using it is that you free up your browser for other things. It also uses up very little memory and is very fast.

On the downside, Fluid is in a way like a stripped down browser window. No controls, panel bar or preferences, you only get a browser window for each webapp you launch. This also means that most of the features you take for granted in your browser, such as spell-checking, pop up window management or tabs will not work.

Although it doesn't offer the advanced features of a browser, Fluid is a great tool to access your web apps separately on your Mac desktop.

Download Fluid 0.9.2.5 in Softonic

1Password 2.8.2

Forget Keychain on Mac, 1Password is truly the reference in terms of password management.

This application allows you to store and manage multiple identities and passwords, which you might use in all sorts of programs, websites or browsers. The program works with most of the major browsers, for which it includes an extension to quickly access 1Password while you're surfing the net.

Storing any password or secure note is easy and quick and you'll be able to set up your own security policy, like how many minutes of inactivity until your Mac locks. Keychain users will be familiar with this. You will naturally have to set up a solid master password with which you will have control over your whole collection of passwords.

You can synchronize your 1Password Keychain with your .Mac account, your Palm/Treo and even iPhone to access it from anywhere. It won't work with other phones as yet though.

Additionally, 1Password includes a form filler with which you can set up multiple identities and save data for quick entry. These can be edited any time and associated with specific urls.

The application is regularly updated and the developers are said to be very responsive to issues users may have with 1Password.

1Password is a powerful and effective application to manage all your passwords from one place. Highly recommended to protect your identity on the web.

Download 1Password 2.8.2 in Softonic

SyncMate 1.4.0.350

PC users aren't the only lucky ones to be blessed with easy synchronization to their Windows Mobile device. With SyncMate, Mac users can do it just as easily.

This easy to use little program works with all Windows Mobile devices, including Standard, Classic and Professional version 6. Because it is built specifically for Mac it works seamlessly with applications, such as iPhoto, iCal, iTunes and your Address Book. We liked the way the interface was structured, letting you easily browse the elements you want to sync with your Windows Mobile device.

You can transfer all your bookmarks from your browser to your Windows Mobile device. Syncmate also lets you manage all your text messages and transfer them onto your Mac, and simply redimension videos.

Normally, connecting your Mac with your Windows Mobile Device is very easy to do. However, some users have complained of some difficulties every now and then. The application is still in Beta, so we believe this might be the main reason for these issues.

All in all though, SyncMate is an excellent tool to synchronize your Mac with any Windows Mobile device.

Download SyncMate 1.4.0.350 in Softonic
