Well, the answer is yes. OpenOffice.org 3.0 reveals itself as a very decent competitor: it's light on resources, easy to use and offers full compatibility with standard document formats – including the latest .docx, .xlsx, .pptx and so on from the Microsoft Office suite.

OpenOffice.org includes six different apps that enable you to work with text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, vector-based graphics and mathematical formulas, respectively. All six apps are easily accessible from a launcher (the Start Centre) with freshly designed icons, as well as from the Quickstarter icon in the System Tray.

OpenOffice.org's applications met our expectations in every regard: they're easy to use (especially if you're used to working with Microsoft Office) and feature all the necessary tools to create complete documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases and more. What’s more, there is a great selection of OpenOffice templates, which means that getting started will never be a problem. The program is also thoroughly documented.

We particularly liked the wizard-style interface in OpenOffice Impress (similar to PowerPoint), which enables you to create presentations in no time. But the best thing about OpenOffice.org is probably the possibility to improve and customize your suite with new templates and extensions, downloadable directly from the developer's site.

OpenOffice.org made a great impression. It's a very decent alternative to other suites and can be easily customized with new extensions. Definitely worth a try!

Sublime Text works by focusing on what it really important - the code - and leaves the other types of eye candy out. The minimalist interface that can be customized with a dozen different color schemes. It also includes a really handy mini map on the right side, which enables you to quickly move from top to bottom in your code. This isn't seen in other code editors and is a really big plus.

Even though Sublime Text is seriously pared-back, don't make the mistake of thinking that it lacks features. This programming editor supports most coding languages and can work with multiple documents at the same time, each one on a different tab.

Syntax highlighting, code snippets, and multiple selection will make your work easier. Sublime Text plug-ins are also a major help, allowing you to add endless possibilities to the application - oh, but it doesn't support Zen Coding.

In its last version, Sublime Text was accused of being a little difficult to get into. While it's still not for programming novices, there's plenty of online support and help, so you should never be too far from a word of advice.

Peacock Color Picker works in a slightly different way from other similar tools: instead of selecting the color right on your screen by means of a special cursor, Peacock Color Picker captures a given area of the screen and selects the color only from this area. I personally prefer the first method, which is easier and faster. Also, the capturing tool doesn't show capturing boundaries too clearly, so you don't really know what you're going to get.

The program also enables you to open a given photo and select colors from it, although the image is displayed in such a small window that you can't really work with it. Plus, Peacock Color Picker features the possibility to build several different color palettes, but unfortunately you can't add screen colors to them (only Windows palette ones).

The advantage of ImageMagick is that it can be used to create images dynamically making it suitable for Web apps. In addition, you can resize, rotate, sharpen, color reduce and add special effects to an image. However, ImageMagick is strictly for those familiar with the command line as there is no GUI. You can only make changes to images using commands such as "$magick> convert rose.jpg rose.png".

For those familiar with programming languages, you can use C, C++, Perl, Java, PHP, Python, or Ruby to make changes. A high-quality 2D renderer is also included which provides SVG capabilities. If you are familiar with programming commands, then the range of actions possible with ImageMagick is truly impressive including, conversions, resizing, transparencies, animated GIFs and shape drawing. However, the lack of GUI will exclude most people from using it.

If you're familiar with programming languages and need a powerful command line based tool, Image Magick is worth exploring.
