Calibre is a library for eBooks. It has a big, bold interface that's really easy to use, and ebook files of most formats can just be dragged into the Calibre window. Editing the metadata (title, genre etc) is just a case of hitting the button on the tool bar, and typing in your changes. You can select multiple books and edit them in bulk too, for example if you want to regroup some books in a particular genre.

Viewing is also just a button click, and opens an ebook reader window. Here you can increase or decrease the font size to your comfort, add bookmarks and more. You can also set Calibre to download feed from news websites, although the layout results are sometimes a bit odd. There is also, of course, ebook reader synchronizing, so you can easily keep your device up to date.

As the name suggests, you can obviously flush several caches at once, language localization files and other useless data. I'm always a bit wary of programs that claim to optimize RAM as this is something that can make your system terribly unstable if done badly but you can run Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner in Single User Mode to avoid crashing your entire machine in one go.

We also liked the fact that you can instantly see the login items on your Mac which can reveal erroneous entries that may be slowing down your startups. On the downside, Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner leaves behind the package receipt and . plist file when uninstalled and the overall interface, while easy to use, is very dated.

Despite the confusing name, rest assured that Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner works from OS X 10.4 Tiger upwards and is a lightweight, easy to use and effective way to maintain your system.

Camfrog for Mac is designed for those that want to meet new people on the net and have a chat using their webcam.

It sounds innocent enough and generally it is although its a bit disconcerting that it asks you for your marital status as mandatory during registration which takes no more than a minute? The Camfrog for Mac interface is similar to that of an IM client with contacts listed down the right hand side and a messaging box along the bottom. When you log in, you're asked whether you want to join the main Camfrog room or a specific room such as "Latino", "LearnEnglish", "Single" and a special room for those using sign language.

When you log into a room, the rules are made clear such as "No disturbing the room with repeated text or spamming" and "No nudity or asking others to get nude". The main Camfrog room is chaos though. Because there are several people all communicating at once, all you see is a flurry of random messages being exchanged between users. Click on a contact, and you can usually see their webcam (unless they are categorised as a "lurker" which means their webcam is paused for a while).

You can also hear conversations intermittently like you're tuning in and out of a radio. In general, the whole thing is quite confusing. It would be fine to have a one-on-one chat on Camfrog Video Chat but interacting with several different users at once is like trying to catch rain water. If nothing else, it's quite amusing just looking at people on their webcams who look equally confused as they stare at the messages scrolling past and scratch their heads. You also get the sense of a voyeur at times. It's quite odd to accidentally tune into a conversation between a guy who's explaining to his girlfriend that she and Camfrog are the best things that ever happened to him!

The sound and video quality are however pretty good and it's amazing how many people are online. It's much nicer to meet people "face-to-face" in this way rather than just chatting to them anonymously. It would be nicer to expand the size of the video but this is only available in the pro version. The same goes for seeing multiple videos at once. The overall interface is quite nice however - a lot better than the Windows version although that's what you expect on Macs anyway.

There are plenty of people online and Camfrog for Mac has a lot of potential as a group collaboration tool. If you just want to meet friends though, you shouldn't have any problems if you persevere.

Camtasia Studio has been available on Windows for quite some time now but developers at Techsmith have finally given Mac users a chance to enjoy all it has to offer. While it has not retained all the functionality of the Windows version, the interface is considerably improved.

When I was a Windows user, of all the big anti-virus apps out there, the one that I got along with most was McAfee. It just seemed to do it's job with less fuss and intrusion than Norton or any of the other big ones.

McAffee VirusScan is even more stripped down and does a straightforward job. However, be warned that to uninstall it, you have to use the uninstaller that is bundled with the download or that can be downloaded from Softonic. For some reason, it seems to hide the results away in a little box underneath the drag and drop target but you can expand it by clicking the arrow. I'm sure if it does detect a virus, there is a much clearer warning of the result. There are very few configuration options but it does allow you to schedule automatic scans at specific times during the week which can target specific files. This is handy for targeting a download folder for example, or to prevent the need to scan your whole system.

McAfee VirusScan is updated regularly automatically and if you no need to check a virus definition, it takes you straight onto it's online database.

McAfee VirusScan is an effective tool for anyone that just wants to scan a one off file and doesn't need a real time scanner - just beware of the uninstallation process!
