F1 Season 2008

There's so much to love about Formula 1 - the pulsating starts, the perilous overtaking maneuvers, the tactical pit stops, and of course the bikini-clad beauties at the start.

If you're a fan of the motorsport and want to follow the season's thrills and spills on your Pocket PC then you really shouldn't be without this little app. The program contains a wealth of information about the calendar, courses, tracks, drivers and teams.

The menu structure is clear and simple, and from the home screen you're given the option of choosing from the five aforementioned categories. The 'Championship' section provides a ranking of the top drivers for the season, which is updated as the season goes on.

The 'Calendar' menu gives you a run-down of the order and dates of the races, providing you with details of each course, such as the circuit length, web address, lap record etc., plus the facility for entering the final positions in the season's championship. You also get a basic illustrated map of the course.

Clicking the 'Drivers' menu option gives you a list of all this year's drivers and even test drivers, containing info on them about date of birth, nationality, height, weight, number of races/podium finishes etc. For some reason it doesn't show you how many Grand Prix wins they have, and it would've also been nice to see photographs of the drivers.

Likewise, the 'Cars' and 'Teams' section also doesn't have an option for viewing photos of the vehicles, which I found was a key omission.

Despite the lack of photography, F1 Season 2008 is chock-full of stats and makes for an ideal companion to the motorsport season.

Download F1 Season 2008 in Softonic

ThumbCal 1.0.7

Let's face it, the built-in Calendar in Windows Mobile for Pocket PC isn't up to much. It's clunky and fiddly to operate and makes it difficult to quickly check the date and make appointments.

ThumbCal is designed to replace the default calendar on your handset with one that's easier to use. It's certainly a lot clearer, with big buttons as the dates that can be easily touched with a finger. If you run the app with its bundled skin you'll get a slick black interface with white numbers and grey highlights.

By clicking a date or tapping it with your fingers you can access a menu where you can select 'Today' to return to the current day on the calendar. You can choose 'New' to make an appointment for a particular date. Or at least, that's the theory. In practice, I couldn't get the feature to do anything, probably because this is an early alpha version.

Nevertheless it's good for checking dates in the future and goes up beyond the year 2100, so you can literally plan the rest of your life on it. As you flip through the years, the calendar scrolls upwards, which looks pretty cool. Again though, it's hit and miss as to whether this feature will work.

ThumbCal is a great looking, easy-access Pocket PC calendar app which is unfortunately let down by bugs and glitches.

Download ThumbCal 1.0.7 in Softonic

Best Birthday allows you to do just that by providing you with a handy tool for keeping a record of when people's special days are. It does this by plundering your Outlook and mobile Contacts, and organizing them in such a way that you will always know when to start buying cards or presents.

What I like most about Best Birthday is the way in which you can quickly sort your contacts based on a variety of factors, such as by name, date or number of days left until their birthday. I always keep it set on the latter filter, so I know exactly who it is I should be thinking of buying for next. There's also an option to 'split' the contacts, either by birth month or zodiac sign, a neat little way of packaging different people together.

Amongst the options, you can tick a box to display anniversaries as well as birthdays, and there's even a feature for composing message templates for quick sending when it comes to someone's big day. Perhaps the inclusion of a 'Notes' section would've also been useful for recording gift ideas for each contact in advance.

The inclusion of a Today screen plug-in for your Pocket PC is great because it allows you to view and edit upcoming birthday events without having to manually launch the program.

If you're looking for a way of ensuring you never forget a birthday, Best Birthday certainly beats the old-fashioned pen and paper recording method.

Download Best Birthday 1.00 in Softonic

Pointui Home is designed to change all that, skinning the Windows Mobile interface to make it easy to control the basic functions of your device without having to so much as look at your stylus. i.e. by clicking directly with your fingers.

In order to achieve this Pointui uses a kind of 'shuffle' system as adopted by the HTC device, and not too dissimilar to the iPhone. It means that you can navigate your operating system using finger swipes, making the whole process of using your handheld much more intuitive and more enjoyable, to boot.

From the main program window you can make calls, access email and text messaging, and manage and control the functions of the media player. Certain elements of Windows Mobile have been completely reskinned, including the phone app, which gives a more of an iPhone feel to the call log. Other tools such as calendar and tasks haven't been reskinned but they are now easier to access.

What's more, the system settings are now right at your fingertips, rather than buried below a series of menus on your Pocket PC.

If you're fed up of the somewhat cumbersome Windows Mobile environment and stylus-based interface, Pointui offers a very interesting alternative that lets your fingers do the talking.

Download Pointui Home 1.51a in Softonic

As I grow older, I realise this is becoming less and less likely to happen. However, I've just stumbled across a mobile app that will give me almost the next best thing.

Agendus is an excllent personal information manager designed to make you more you a more productive human being through your Pocket PC. The application combines the different standard applications such as address book, notepad, tasks and email, and supports data synchronization with Microsoft Outlook.

It's incredible to be able to manage and access so much information from one place, and it surprises me that Microsoft couldn't have come up with its own Agendus when it developed the Windows Mobile OS. The program centralises a huge range of tasks, including managing contacts, appointments, tasks, notes, SMS and emails.

There's a whole bunch of stuff you can do with this information using Agendus, such as displaying data in daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly views, grouping, editing and deleting. A powerful built-in full-text search ensures that whatever you need is always close at hand. Everything is very simple to synchronise too, using ActiveSync.

Thanks to an intuitive centralised interface and some slick integration with Outlook, this really is a product you can't afford to be without if you have a busy personal or professional life.

Download Agendus Professional Edition 2.21 in Softonic

But why settle for looking at the rather bland default date and time display? Today's Time offers a neat alternative, providing a skin-based analog and digital clock for your Pocket PC. After a simple installation, you can access the program options through the Today screen settings menu.

There are a bevy of options here to tweak virtually every aspect of the clock. The Analog clock menu gives you the ability to change the view and the clock face style, and customize the colors of the hands on the clock. Likewise, with the Digital clock settings menu you can choose from a range of clock face styles, change the color and add a blink time separator.

Today's Time also comes with a date display and a battery indicator, which are neatly displayed next to or above the clock on your Today screen. The inclusion of a calendar mode somewhere would've been a nice touch, but I guess you can't have everything.

As a means of adding a clearer, more attractive clock to your PPC, Today's Time makes for a pretty decent solution.

Download Today's Time 1.3 in Softonic

Life is busy. You don’t need technology slowing you down. So, why let ActiveSync software organize your Outlook information on your Pocket PC in a way that makes your data harder to find? Now you have a choice.

PocketMirror Professional for Windows Mobile is the only Outlook synchronization software that does both of the following:

Synchronize multiple Outlook Contacts, Calendar, and Tasks folders with the corresponding Pocket Outlook applications on the handheld

Synchronize Outlook folders and categories on your PC with corresponding categories on your Windows Mobile handheld or smartphone

Meaning, PocketMirror Professional for Windows Mobile is built around the way you have already organized your important information in Outlook on your desktop.
MyPIM 1.0

In this modern world it seems like we have less and less time for ourselves, with so much to do. As a result, it's important to be able to take control of your tasks and appointments to ensure that they don't weigh too heavy on your mind.

MyPIM is designed to help make it easier for you to manage your business and personal dates, giving you the ability to view them all on screen. The main program window displays all the events on your agenda and you can flick through these by date and time and even by year. For me, the main interface is a little ugly though, and if you have lots of appointments up on screen at the same time it can be a little cluttered and difficult to read.

However, in its favour, MyPIM does have a lot of neat features that can really help you get on top of your forthcoming events. You can filter tasks, arrange them into categories and set up different alarms. One of my favourite things about the software is the way it lets you create your own task categories and assign customized icons to them.

While not as well-designed as some of the personal information managers I've seen, MyPIM certainly has some innovative features for managing your time more effectively.

Download MyPIM 1.0 in Softonic

All of us hate paying bills but unfortunately until the day that utility companies make everything free they're a necessary evil. Parting with money is always going to be painful, but you can take the sting out of it a bit by installing a billing management program.

Bill Buddy lets you take care of your outgoings using your Pocket PC, providing you with a simple database for logging due billings. As long as you have the .Net Compact Framework installed, the program is a breeze to set up. The interface is basic but practical, displaying all the outstanding bills for a particular month, along with their due date.

You can add a new bill entry very simply, just by clicking 'New' and entering the date you received the demand and the date it's due, selecting the month, day and year from a drop-down menu or calendar display.

Once you've entered data you can quickly view it in list format to clearly see what you've still got left to pay each month. To edit an entry or mark it as paid you need to select it from the list and choose 'Modify' from the 'Options' menu. Call me lazy, but I would've liked one-click access to the entry, but I guess you can't have everything.

If you're looking for a simple but effective way of managing your bills on the go, Bill Buddy does the job with no frills.

Download Bill Buddy Smartphone 1.0 in Softonic

In addition to synchronizing with a desktop PC, ActiveSync can synchronize directly with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 so that you can keep your e-mail, calendar data, tasks and contact information updated wirelessly when you’re away from your desktop or tablet PC.

Changes in ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2 help improve issues related to setup, partnerships, and connectivity with the PC and Microsoft Exchange. In addition, it includes a troubleshooter utility that scans your computer and device to identify problems and offers information and corrective actions to solve them.

ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2 supports synchronization with a desktop or tablet PC via USB cable, Bluetooth, or infrared connection.

Faster file transfer speed and photo sync via Microsoft Outlook is now available for Windows Mobile 5.0 powered devices.

Customers using Microsoft Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 with devices running the Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 will benefit from the following feature enhancements included in ActiveSync 4.5: Direct Push Technology, local device wipe, and certificate powered authentication to Microsoft Exchange.

Microsoft Office Outlook 2000 is not supported by ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2. If a customer wishes to take full advantage of ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2, then it is recommended that users upgrade to Microsoft Outlook 2003.

Conversion of database files for use on a mobile device is not supported by ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2. On previous versions, this feature was limited to devices running Windows Mobile software for Pocket PC 2003 and earlier.

SBSH ContactBreeze 2.1.01

SBSH ContactBreeze is an additional contacts tab for PocketBreeze which allows you to view and search your contacts directly from your Today screen!

Features of the add-on include:

View all your contacts on your Today screen!

Search your contacts using sequence or initial search!

Easily switch to full screen mode to search for contacts "on the fly" without using your stylus!

Browse through your contacts using the Pocket PC D-Pad!

Open and edit your contacts in your favorite PIM: Pocket Informant, Agenda Fusion, or Pocket Outlook!

Contacts are dynamically loaded - PPC memory is only used while viewing the contacts, and then immediately released!

Additional Contacts Tab

ContactBreeze is an amazing new way to view your contacts at a glance on your Today screen

ContactBreeze is the first plug-in designed to work inside PocketBreeze

ContactBreeze adds a new tab on the PocketBreeze Tabs Toolbar, alongside your Calendar, Tasks, and Special Events, giving you quick access and special searching capabilities contacts from your Today screen

Search your contacts one of two ways using the "ABC" search bar in ContactBreeze

Search Methods

ContactBreeze offers two searching methods and gives you the ability to quickly toggle between them using the search toggle method button (right next to the main Contacts button).

Initials Search - The traditional search method for contacts used by most PIMs in the market. Tap the "ABC" search bar at the bottom of the ContactBreeze display to view contacts starting with a specific letter. Tapping the button "ABC" once will show all contacts starting with an A. Tapping it again will show all contacts starting with the letter B, and so on.

Sequence Search - This is a dynamic search method, used on most cell phones. Each time you press one of the letter buttons ContactBreeze will show all contacts including that letter. As you tap more letter keys, ContactBreeze will show contacts containing that sequence of letters. If you have about 500 contacts, three taps will usually reduce the list showing on the page to three or four. The selected sequence of letters is highlighted on the contact name. Most users prefer this method after trying it the first time.

Full Screen Searching

Tapping the ContactBreeze icon brings up the full screen mode, allowing you to search for contacts without using your stylus. The ContactBreeze icon was also designed large enough to press without a stylus.

Using the large keyboard you can search for contacts using your selected search method. While working in full mode the D-Pad can browse through your contacts list. Pressing the Action button - the center of your D-Pad - opens the contact detail window, a pop-up window similar to the PocketBreeze Notes pop-up. This shows all available phone numbers and e-mail addresses for that contact. Pressing it again closes the contact detail window. This allows you to navigate for contacts without using your stylus!

I've tried a number of planners, calendars, diaries etc but still I'm a mess. Let me tell you, I am now ready to get serious, which is why I'm glad to have found myTime Easy.

The software allows you to plan all activities in your life - work, rest and play - displaying all in a presentable calendar form. Highlight your precious time of the day in white and edit all entries adding as much or little extra information as you wish. You can also export data as XML and Excel onto your PC meaning that finally you might get some control of your life. However, what I can't find are the alarms I need to remind me when something important is happening. Without alarms, I'm afraid I have little chance of doing anything.

Very usable organiser with colour coding and calendar entries

Download myTime Easy 1.0.1 in Softonic
