Street Fighter 2 Plus Champion Edition

For all Street Fighter II lovers, here’s the Plus Champion Edition version of the most famous fighting game of all time, now available for Windows. While other editions of Street Fighter have often required extra emulators to run, as well as losing some of the feel of the original game, this one retains all the original gameplay and graphics, and all from just one file. You can even add a 'scan lines' effect by pressing Alt-4 or selecting the option in the Video menu.

With the Champion Edition you can choose between the eight original characters plus the four special ones you meet towards the end of your adventure: Balrog, Sagat, Vega and M. Bison. There are some mistakes here with the names as the Spanish fighter is Vega, the boxer Balrog and the captain M. Bison, but in this emulation, the names are all mixed-up.

To set the keys you prefer in order to play, go to the Option > Set Config > Controllers menu; at this point, choose '6btn Pad' in the Port1 line and click Define. Now press the keys you would like to use to jump, move right, left, punch and kick by following the direction you see at the bottom of the frame. Now you're all set to enjoy the tournament.

Revisit the action with your favorite characters from Street Fighter in this faithful version of the original Capcom game.

Download Street Fighter 2 Plus Champion Edition in Softonic

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe

Of all the superheroes, Spiderman is probably the one to earn the most box office bucks during his career. Of course, when he's not making millions for Hollywood studios he's out fighting crimes, and this latest adventure sees him team up with the unlikeliest of allies to save New York from a plague of militant aliens. Weirdly, once you've defeated the likes of Doc Octopus, Green Lantern and Venom in this humorous caper, they become allies and co-operate with Spidey to blast the bad guys.

This hare-brained story aside, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe basically plays like your standard side-scrolling beat-em-up, in the style of Capcom classics like Final Fight. Only in this case you're able to control Spiderman, or one of his aforementioned enemies, inheriting the unique powers of each character.

Each of the fairly diverse levels charges you with the task of defeating the aliens as you traverse from one end to the other. Unfortunately these baddies don't have much in the way of artificial intellegence, but because there are so many of the critters the game is still pretty challenging. Graphically, the game borrows more elements from the comic than it does from the film, giving it a surprisingly humorous aspect. Humorous, that is, until Spidey's incessesant wise-cracking becomes boring. That said, this is a polished adventure game that fans of the Webbed Wonder simply cannot afford to miss.

Download Spider-Man: Friend or Foe in Softonic

Having read the plot I'm not sure it will be - Earth is inhabited by zombies and only a few people have survived. They must group together and battle these undead idiots to save the planet, and are led by the superhuman heroine, Alice, played by Milla Jovavich. Sigh.

Hang on, did I just say Milla Jovavich? Oh yes, maybe it won't be so bad after all. Even if the films a stinker, this wallpaper will give you the chance to view the monster-bashing beauty on your desktop all day long.

Download Resident Evil: Extinction Wallpaper in Softonic

M.U.G.E.N

Chances are, you’ve probably played on several games created by the M.U.G.E.N graphics engine. 2D fighting classics such as Street Fighter and Paws of Fury were originally developed on it. Today, the M.U.G.E.N engine is enjoying something of a revival due to the great old-school cartoon style characters you can create with it. Note however, that this download is for the design engine and you’ll need to be familiar with DOS programming to use it. There is one game included simply called “M.U.G.E.N” although it’s only intended as a demo to show you what you can do with it.

M.U.G.E.N is essentially a DOS based 2D graphics design engine designed by Elecbyte (now defunct) and was originally released in 1999. It allows anyone to create characters, stages and other game objects through interpreted text files, graphics and sound compilations and it also supports various types of audio formats such as MP3, ADX, OGG and MIDI for sound effects. The engine is currently setup primarily for fighting game development but several other game types have been developed using it, including shoot-em-up’s and platform games.

The official Elecbyte website has disappeared meaning M.U.G.E.N is now hosted by a developer who has renamed it “WinMugen” which is basically a hybrid of the original engine designed to work with Windows. For those familiar with programming, there are full instructions about how to use the engine in several README files contained within the download.

If you’re nostalgic about the games you played in the arcade as a kid, and are willing to learn a bit of coding to create your own, this is exactly the tool you need.

Download M.U.G.E.N in Softonic
