CSR Racing is an amazingly realistic racing game for Mac and best of all, its completely free.

CSR Racing features stunning graphics and addictive gameplay with a range of high performance cars including Audi R8, BMW M3 and Chevy Corvette. You can even customize them with turbos, nitrous injection and aerodynamic tweaks to make them go even faster. CSR Racing looks particularly good on retina displays as its been optimized for the latest generation of Macs.

Other cars to chose from include Ford, GM, Mini and Nissan, Audi R8, Ford GT, Chevrolet Camaro, Nissan and GT-R. You can upgrade these with turbos, racing tires and much more although you have to get the balance right - give your car too thin tyres with too many turbos and it'll be out of whack! The aim of the game is territory - beat the gangs and the gang leaders to take over their side of the city until you own it all.

CSR Racing might not be as big as commercial racing games but for free, it's an excellent racing sim.

Download CSR Racing 1.1.3 in Softonic

F1 2012 1.0

For the first time, Mac users can experience a truly realistic Formula 1 game with F1 2012 for Mac. F1 2012 is by far the most accurate Formula 1 simulator for Mac.

F1 2012 for Mac features all the realism of the official Formula 1 circuit and is officially licensed by the FIA with drivers, teams and cars. You can choose to be any driver on the F1 tour including Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. All of the tracks from 2012 are here including the legendary Monaco circuit and the brand new Texas circuit in for the United States Grand Prix.

You can play either as a real F1 sim in Career Mode which requires all the skills of a professional driver or in arcade mode for a less exacting but more entertaining experience. If you want a taste of life outside of the cockpit, you can also compete as a race engineer as well as driver, requiring the fine-tuning of your car set-up, weather conditions and your own handling preferences. If you just want to test how fast you really are, you can play in Time Attack mode which simply times your fastest laps.

You can of course compete in the FIA World Drivers Championship featuring all 20 circuits from the F1 2012 season. The driver abilities in F1 2012 are matched to the real-life skills of the drivers. Some, such as Lewis Hamilton are particularly good in bad weather for example. If that's not realistic enough for you, you can also compete against a friend in split-screen world or players from around the world via LAN.

The main downside of F1 2012 for Mac is that it is very demanding on resources. The developers recommend at least 8GB of RAM and some ATI and NVIDIA graphics cards aren't supported so you'll need a new MacBook Pro or iMac to play it.

F1 2012 for Mac is the most realistic Formula 1 game you'll find for Mac.

Download F1 2012 1.0 in Softonic

Happy Wheels

Happy Wheels is an arcade game with a dark humorous twist.

In the spirit of games like QWOP, you control the character you're playing with various keys on your keyboard. These are fully customizable if you want to change them in your preferences. The object of Happy Wheels is to get your character through each level as quickly as possible while completing a variety of prompted tasks.

There are a variety of different levels in Happy Wheels where you can do anything from drive a race car to putter around on a segway. Controls are relatively easy, although it does take a few tries to figure out how to make your player move in the exact way you want him to. Every time you hit an obstacle in Happy Wheels, you'll be prompted with text to perform certain keyboard functions in order to move on.

Happy Wheels can be a bit gory, in a cartoon kind of way. For example, in one level when your character is transported back to prehistoric times, a non-playable character gets eaten by a dinosaur, at least partially. His limbs are left behind in a spray of pixellated blood you have to drive your segway through. It's nothing too graphic, but Happy Wheels might not be appropriate for younger children as a result. The game also sometimes freezes up, making your character's movements stick occasionally.

Happy Wheels is an utterly random (and a little bit gory) browser game that will provide considerable amusement.

Download Happy Wheels in Softonic

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the third 3D game in the GTA series, taking the action from Vice City's 80s to a 90s' hip hop world of hood violence and gangsters.

You play as Carl Johnson, returning to his home of Los Santos after five years away. Plenty has changed over the years, and Carl sets about getting his gang's reputation and influence back. GTA: San Andreas' gameplay is classic GTA - tons of cinematic cut scenes, varied missions and lots of mini games, spread over a free roaming sandbox world.

What defines GTA: San Andreas more than anything is the scale. It's hugely ambitious, set in a massive state featuring three big cities, and plenty of countryside. The campaign is enormous, and there is plenty more to do beside. The storyline, a rags to riches tale, may not be massively original but it's well told with excellent acting and lots of memorable and funny characters. The radio stations are excellent, with a great mix of 90s music and hilarious adverts.

There are points where GTA: San Andreas will be frustrating for some. Racing cars in the countryside can be pretty slippy for instance, and building up Carl's lungs for swimming underwater takes too long. Some of the missions are a little annoying too, but hey are eclipsed by the best moments of the game and the amount of fun you can have roaming the state, enjoying the sites and creating havoc!

GTA: San Andreas is a milestone in sandbox gaming. It's violent and very much an adult game, and while it has gameplay flaws, the overall achievement and the fun you can have playing are pretty much unbeatable.

Download GTA: San Andreas 1.02 in Softonic

RC Mini Racers is a fast paced and fun Micromachines style racing game featuring 20 remote controlled mini cars, missiles, mines, turbo boosts and lots more.

You can choose from 3 cars to begin with and select the rest as you unlock them by gaining credits via race wins. You can customize them with weapons and turbos and even change the wheels of your racing car. There are 24 tracks in total and you can choose circuit races (round tracks with just 5 laps) and sprint races (more varied but with no race rules). Finally, there’s a coin racing mode where you can explore the level and collect coins for the customization store.

The most fun you can have is using weapons to win the race by shooting and bombing opponents from the track. There are also some pretty fun high speed tracks which severely test your driving skills. There are many cash incentives throughout the game for best laps, most kills, ramp jumps and best race times etc. There are 4 difficulty modes with insane mode being the hardest and virtually unplayable.

Finally, RC Mini Racers runs in both windowed and fullscreen mode and you can tweak the detail in Graphics settings and even add a joystick. You can buy virtual coins from within the game if you need money to pimp up your car if you find yourself unable to win races and pimp up your car.

RC Mini Racers is a fun game, especially for anyone who fondly remembers Micromachines.

Download RC Mini Racers 1.4 in Softonic

Based on a Lucas Arts game from 1987, F-1 Spirit is a Micro Machines-style top down style racing game. It's free and it is a lot of fun.

F-1 Spirit might not be big on graphics but it has six engaging game modes such as Stock, Rally, F3, F3000, Endurance and of course, F1 for which there are 16 courses. The first three modes are available from the start and then the latter are opened up to you as you acquire more points by racing.

Controlling the car is done using the cursor keys plus Space to accelerate and M to break. F-1 Spirit requires a very steady hand. In fact, too steady at times, which makes the game rather frustrating to begin with, particularly in F1 mode where the cars zip around the track unbelievably fast. You'll need to use your brake a lot if you're not going to give up at the first hurdle. If you hit your car against opponents or obstacles, your vehicle will be damaged and lose traction. In addition, you have to avoid running out of fuel, which you can do with regular pit stops.

F-1 Spirit is a strangely addictive game and with all the levels and modes available, you're guaranteed to find one that suits you.

Download F-1 Spirit Remake 1.08 in Softonic

There are nine stunt cars to choose from ranging from buggies to 4x4's. You can choose to play either against the clock, challenge the computer or just go mental on your own driving around like a lunatic pulling 360s in the air. Plus there are a load more game mode options such as ""Bubble Bonus" and "Trick Master" where you are set several different challenges.

StuntMANIA Pro gets full marks for choice because in addition to this, you get 11 different tracks plus a night time environment which makes a difficult game almost impossible. To add a bit of interest, there aren't only ramps and ravines to cross but each level has bonuses and hidden challenges including power-ups that can give you extra speed, jumping ability and teleport you to other parts of the track.

The graphics in StuntMANIA Pro are excellent, especially the vehicles which are illustrated in fantastic detail. There's plenty of tracks to keep you going although it's shame there is no race mode where you can take on other opponents in a race around the tracks.

StuntMANIA Pro is an excellent driving game that will appeal to all ages and with plenty of choice to maintain your interest for more than just a few plays.

Download StuntMANIA Pro 4.5 in Softonic

The racing part sees you using a stick shift to choose your speed at various points on the track. The race then takes place and you see the result, which depends on your car stats, and your race plan.

The presentation is all very slick and, unusually for this type of resource management game, there are ample instructions and help. MaxDriving is very much geared towards boys, with some pretty stereotyped illustrations of women.

Some players might find the enforced waiting irritating - you might have to wait 25 minutes until a race starts, and if you miss it, you have to wait again.

The Fast & The Furious is an online browser game based around car tuning and street racing, just like the movie of the same name.

Once registered and signed in, you have to give yourself a street name, choose a car, and then you're off. The Fast & The Furious is essentially a statistics based role playing game, with street racing stuck on top. You race to win points, so you can tune up your car, and beat better opponents.

The focus is on tuning, not racing, as this isn't an action game. Drag races are animated, but you can choose to click past them and just get the result. It's a bit like Need For Speed, but without the driving.

As you win The Fast & The Furious races you increase your skill and so on, but you also increase Police attention. Once that's over 50%, you are likely to be thrown in to jail unless you wait for the heat to cool off. What this means is that you cannot play The Fast & The Furious constantly, clicking through races to increase your XP and stats, as the game forces you to wait. There are premium options that allow you to spend your way out of the waiting game, however.

If you enjoy this type of numbers game, there appears to be a reasonably large community to interact with, but nothing really stands out in The Fast & The Furious to make it extra special. The lack of real action makes it pretty dull, unless you get addicted to the mindless RPG grinding.

The Fast & The Furious is a relatively simple online RPG, based around the exiting sport of street racing, but without any of the adrenaline rushes.

Download The Fast & The Furious Online Game in Softonic

Racer is definitely a decent attempt at creating the latter, although I came across more than a few problems with it.

Racer is a cross-platform car simulation project which is high on realism, employing accurate car movements and controls to maximum effect. The fact that it's open source means that what you download are only the basics - to add more cars and tracks you'll have to go to the contents page where you will find links to several sites providing more cars and tracks.

When you start Racer, it's best to go to 'Options' and then 'Controls' to configure how you'd like to control your car. Click on the aspect you want to change the control for (such as accelerate and brake) and then press the button you'd like to use for it. When you start a race, you're able to configure how many cars you'd like to race against, which track, which car and how many tracks. However, you have to download these options from the contents page and upload them to Racer. It would have been nice if the developer had included at least a few examples to give a better taste of what the game can do. And besides, when I tried to select 16 cars to race against, the game simply crashed.

Because the controls are designed to be as realistic as possible, handling your car is quite tough. To get started, get your revs up and then shift into first gear. The problem is that the gear indicator isn't very clear, so as you're racing it's hard to know what gear you're in. However, the sounds and controls give a feeling of realism and the graphics aren't bad at all for a free racing application.

The good thing about Racer is that it is open source and the sky is the limit for those wanting to add to it. The bad is that you have to visit different sites to add bits onto it, the controls take some getting used to, and it is still prone to crashes.

Download Racer 0.8.2 beta in Softonic

Crash3D 1.06

One of my favorite games as a kid was Stunt Car Racer on the Commodore Amiga. It wasn't the polygon graphics that won me over but the playability that got me addicted.

Crash3D widget doesn't quite beat that classic game in my biased eyes but it's still a fun driving game that you can play on your Dashboard to kill a bit of time. Crash3D sees you take control of a stunt car as you race around a desert landscape hitting as many ramps and loop-the-loops as possible in an attempt to get your name on the high score table. The fun thing is, you're competing against competitors from around the world who can log onto the Crash3D Server and register their high score.

Points are awarded for how much time you spend in the air, how many hoops you jump through and how many loop-the-loops you manage to perform in the time allotted (which is about 10 minutes). Although the splash screen at start-up says you have to use W, A, S and D to control the car, I found the arrow keys worked fine with the spacebar used for turbo boost.

If you're like me, you'll probably start by just hitting turbo boost and flying around the desert crashing into rocks but beware because the boost is limited to about 10 seconds of continuous driving before it needs five seconds to reload.

The stunts are fun at first although once you've been round the circuit a few times, you soon get bored. It would have been nice to have had a few more scenarios to choose from, or a few more more original stunts. Also, your car is virtually indestructible which makes it a bit too easy, and if it flips over and you get stuck, you can press 'R' to reset it.

All in all however, Crash3D is a handy widget for racing fans to waste a few minutes or indulge in their stunt car fantasies.

Download Crash3D 1.06 in Softonic

Monopoly

One of the funnest board games ever is now available on Mac.

For anyone who's been gone from this planet in the last 100 years, let me quickly reexplain what Monopoly is. The goal isn't complicated: buy as many properties as you can to become the richest player. You'll have to take turns with other players circling the game board, buying property and paying out rent whenever you fall on someone else's property. The game gets more exciting as you start adding buildings, charging higher rent and ultimately buying back others' properties. Because you throw dice to advance on the board, the game includes a certain element of chance but it also involves negotiation and good interaction with others.

Anyways, you get it: Monopoly is a great game to play with friends and family. The single player mode is also very enjoyable, but it lacks all the laughs and quips of multiplayer. The graphics and animations of the game are particularly well done and emphasize the classic touch of the original Monopoly. You'll also get to play with the original tokens like the dog, race car or boot. The history pane on the right of the interface will also let you know all the last moves carried out by all players.

Great fun whether alone or in multiplayer, Monopoly for Mac presents a beautiful game board with all the classic touches and elements of the original game.

Download Monopoly in Softonic

Adrenalin Racing 1.2

The prospect of playing a racing game almost always sounds exciting, however Adrenalin Racing felt more of a nightmare than anything. The graphics are very weak and the background on racetracks looks like it's made out of cardboard. There are many different car models to choose from, but they all look very clunky. We were also extremely disappoint by the playability. Moving your car on the race track feels more like if you were pushing a cardboard box around and it's difficult to negotiate corners properly.

It's a shame that the graphics and playability are so poor because the different game modes (arcade, adrenaline, ghost and tournament) seem promising. The camera movement, while it follows your car on the track is probably the only other thing that we liked in Adrenalin Racing.

Download Adrenalin Racing 1.2 in Softonic
