The only way to do this is to run them through a converter such as DivX 7 which converts your files to the latest version of the DivX standard. DivX 7 for Mac provides everything you need to enjoy high-quality digital videos including high definition H.264 (.mkv) videos with AAC audio.

The DivX for Mac download includes the DivX Player plus trial versions of the DivX Pro Codec (6-month trial) and DivX Converter (15-day trial). The DivX player is one of the sleekest out there featuring translucent windows, clean play controls and on-demand scrub bar. It will also play Quicktime and other popular formats. The converter is extremely simply to use as it merely requires you to drag and drop files into it's tiny interface. Conversions can be rather slow though depending on the size of the file you want to convert.

DivX 7 takes DivX to new levels of quality although since so many other players now playback DivX, the price to upgrade may put off many. If you want the real deal with the converter as well though, DivX 7 promises the best and most accurate DivX conversions and playback

Download DivX 9.1.0 in Softonic

The Unarchiver is designed as a more complete replacement for the Archive Utility app that's built-into OS X.

The Unarchiver is better than the default OS X app because it can handle many more formats and integrates better with Finder. In addition, it can also handle filenames in foreign character and supports a huge range of formats including Zip, Tar-GZip, Tar-BZip2, Rar, 7-zip, LhA, StuffIt and many others.

There really is very little to criticize in The Unarchiver. It's fast, free and can handle just about anything. It's easy to use and doesn't consume a lot of system resources. The only thing some people may miss is a 64 bit version although it's hardly necessary.

The Unarchiver is everything a decompression package should be and best of all, it's free.

Download The Unarchiver 3.7 in Softonic

Audio compression tools don't come much more powerful than xACT.

xACT stands for X Audio Compression Toolkit. It is based on a simple GUI written in AppleScript Studio and supports everything from FLAC to, Md5Sum. It can be not only be used for compression, but also for cutting and joining files such as SHN, FLAC, WAV and AIFF. You can even edit meta data in FLAC tags one by one or or in batches. Apart from compress, you can also obviously decompress between various lossless audio formats.

To process a file, simply drag it to the xACT icon in the Dock. Be warned however that xACT is quite a technical application with absolutely no help file. There doesn't seem to be any developer site either so beyond simple compression and decompression, you may have problems with it.

xACT is a very powerful audio compressor and decompressor but it can be a little difficult to work-out without any kind of user guide.

Download xACT 2.22 in Softonic

Many file formats are supported, but the focus is on digital photography file formats like JPEG, TIFF, NEF, Compressed NEF and CRW file. It works with SmartMedia, CompactFlash, Memory Sticks, SD, MMC, XD Cards and Microdrives but also generally most other external storage devices.

PhotoRescue works via a simple interface where you select the kind of recovery you want to perform i.e. Quick or Advanced. Both require your camera device or SD card connected to your machine. Once scanned, it will inform you whether data can be recovered. Many users report success recovering data with PhotoRescue but one issue you might experience is that the file names are jumbled and need some sorting-out. You can also perform a backup of your memory cards, test them and erase them using PhotoRescue.

The good thing is that in Demo mode, it will display all those files that it thinks it will be able to recover before you pay for a licence. However, it should be noted that this is still no guarantee. One other thing to be aware of is that for future updates, you may be required to pay an upgrade fee again even after you've purchased the app but if it works, its probably money well spent.

PhotoRescue seems to be remarkably effective at recovering lost images that have been accidentally deleted but it offers no guarantees.

Download PhotoRescue Wizard 3.3.3.13341 in Softonic

WinZip was on the first file compression and decompression applications for Windows and still remains popular. It's taken years to reach the Mac and although not as effective or as popular as the Windows version, WinZip for Mac offers some interesting features.

The first thing you notice is that WinZip for Mac features a much slicker and user friendly interface than the Windows version. However, you soon realise that it supports far fewer formats namely (ZIP, Zipx, RAR, LHA, 7Z) which offers no major advantages over <taglink type="program" country="en" id="23171">Stuffit</taglink> which supports thirty different file types.

WinZip has a preview feature that allows you to search the contents of an archive before you decompress it (useful when working with compressed large files) but this is nothing new for Mac users, nor is the ability to password protect compressed files.

WinZip will never be a favorite with mac users but it's generally stable and effective at dealing with the limited file types it can handle.

Download WinZip Mac Edition 2.0.1200 in Softonic

It's ideal for those resizing huge batches of images in one go due to the fact you can batch resize an unlimited number of images at one time.

iResize features a preview window although annoyingly, this only appears as soon as you start tinkering with the size - it doesn't appear as soon as you load pictures into it either via Finder or drag and drop. You can set a default resolution or size for all your images and iResize will automatically resize them. For those that need to label using foreign characters on their keyboard, iResize also support this.

Once you have everything setup as you'd like to, simply click Start Batch Processing and all of your images are instantly resized. You don't have to go searching through your files, you don't have to worry about how your folders are arranged. For many, Quicksilver was a godsend in the pre-Spotlight Mac era. Although it's lost some of its importance with the new powerful search and Finder features in Leopard it still remains very much an excellent Mac application.

The search function is very quick and powerful and once you've found what you're looking for you can apply a number of actions like simply launching it, emailing or moving. What's more Quicksilver adapts to the file it finds, so if it's a document you'll get to modify or send it, and if it's an email you'll get to email or copy it. Quicksilver users also like the fact that the application learns from what you search to bring up what you search for or use most.

Quicksilver wouldn't be what it is without its large library of plugins though. This includes everything from dialing a phone number to interacting with iTunes or image and text manipulation. This means you can really customize the application to work according to your needs.

The only downside is the stability issues that Quicksilver seems to have. The application is noted to crash every once in a while.

Despite this stability issue, Quicksilver remains an incredibly intuitive and powerful multi-application launcher for Mac. Recommended for productivity geeks.

Download Quicksilver 1.0 b71 in Softonic

WinRAR is one of the most powerful and useful archiving tools on the net so a tool like this is long overdue. RarMachine can compress any type of file and extract RAR archives with ease. There's no need to access Terminal as the whole archiving process is automated. This makes is much easier to use than <taglink type="program" country="en" id="27230">RAR</taglink> which has no GUI at all.

It is also fully integrated with Finder and it also allows you to use a password, create divisions in RAR files and extract divided RAR files. Everything you need to perform with RarMachine can be accessed by Ctrl-clicking or right-clicking and accessing it through the 'More' menu. Probably the only real downsides are that RarMachine doesn't compress batches of files and it's not free, although it's very cheap to upgrade.

RAR (WinRAR for Mac) 4.20

RAR for Mac is a lightweight compression tool for Macs, that can unpack most common compressed file formats such as ZIP and JAR and is the closest thing to WinRAR for Mac.

RAR for Mac is from the same developer who brought you WinRAR for Mac but of course, it isn't called WinRAR for Mac because it's a Mac and not a Windows application. RAR is a powerful archive manager. It can back up your data and reduce the size of email attachments, decompress RAR, ZIP and other files downloaded from Internet and create new archives in RAR and ZIP file format. The application not only includes support for extracting virtually any kind of file compression format, it also boasts a no-nonsense approach to reducing file sizes.

When you download RAR, you might be confused by the fact that it's just a folder of files. This is because there is no graphical user interface for RAR. It works only via the command line using Terminal so if you've got no experience of using Terminal, then you're going to be a bit stranded. If you're willing to learn however, here's how to do it...

Place the files in any folder on your hard drive, and run the utility by typing in the full path to the application (e.g. to run from the current directory, type "./rar" or "./unrar" followed by the appropriate parameters). If you get stuck, simply type the application name (RAR or UNRAR) without any parameters to see list of useful commands.

However, this will no doubt prove too complicated for most general users and considering the fact that you have to buy a license too for RAR, there are far better applications out there such as <taglink type="program" country="en" id="58675">Zipeg</taglink> which is both free and has a GUI thus making it much easier to use.

RAR is a powerful compression tool and the closest thing to WinRAR for Mac but if you don't know how to run programs from the Terminal, it won't be much use to you.

Download RAR (WinRAR for Mac) 4.20 in Softonic

iZip 2.0

iZip is a practical application for anyone that wants to unzip and compress ZIP, RAR and ZIPX files.

The latter format, ZIPX, is one of the more obscure ones found on OS X, and iZip handles it with ease. In addition, the program treats archives as disks rather than compressed files. This means you can browse archives as if they were a disk using Finder with distinctive viewing options such as using iTunes style cover-flow browsing. This is great if you only need to extract specific files from an archive instead of extracting the whole thing.

Another handy feature is the possibility to share archives via files.com. You can upload them via iZip and receive a link which others can use to access it. Obviously, this is not advisable if you are dealing with an archive which contains particularly sensitive data though. There are few downsides to iZip - its a shame there aren't more configuration and customization options but overall, its an excellent archiver.

If you're looking for a free archiving tool with something a bit different, iZip is excellent.

Download iZip 2.0 in Softonic

Pacifist 3.0.10

One thing I can't help missing from Windows is the amount of decompression tools available.

There are far fewer on Mac, although Pacifist makes up for that as an application that can handle a huge range of compressed packages including .pkg, .dmg, .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .pax, and .xar archives. Most importantly, it gives you full control over which files you want to unzip, which is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package. The most common usage of Pacifist is to roll-back unsuccessful or problematic updates, especially to QuickTime.

Simply open the package you're having problems with in Pacifist and click on the Verify button. Pacifist then checks to see whether all files are installed correctly and have the right permissions.

Alternatively, Pacifist could be handy if an installer isn't functioning correctly and you need to extract only those files that are essential. It can even open certain archives via HTTP, which is handy in case you want to download only one file from a large .zip archive without downloading the whole file. As a final bonus, Pacifist can also find which installer installed which programs. This is ideal if you've got a program installed that you have no idea how it got there.

There's very little to criticize in Pacifist. It's a superbly versatile and powerful archive tool that may one day be standard in OS X.

Download Pacifist 3.0.10 in Softonic

Roxio Toast Titanium 11.1

Roxio Toast Titanium has long been the de facto standard when it comes to burning DVDs and CDs on a Mac. It's packed with features which allow you not only to record disks but also perform backups, edit video and audio and manage your TiVo recorded TV shows.

Roxio Toast Titanium has a very clear user interface. The side panel contains all the simplest functions for choosing which type of disk you want to burn, including Data, music, VCD, DivX, Video_TS, or just plain DVD... the program now also supports Blu-Ray Disks. Simply select the disk type, drag and drop the files you want on the disk and hit the big red button!

If you want to create your own DVD with menus and other features, Roxio Toast Titanium has several templates to help you along, or you can create your own custom menus. The new Batch DVD-Video function is great to quickly compress or convert videos to DVD.

In terms of new features, the most significant addition to Roxio Toast Titanium 11 is higher quality export profiles for export to Vimeo, an updated Roku video export profile and audio CD projects now allows up to 199 tracks.

Toast can still automatically connect to your TiVo and copy shows and movies across to your Mac, ready to watch there, convert for a portable device or burn to disk. Your EyeTV shows can be streamed from the internet to your Mac or iPhone. Roxio Toast Titanium also adds some limited yet welcome editing features, in this case, trimming and cropping to clean up your videos.

If creating audio CDs is your thing than you'll like the fingerprinting technology which helps you identify tracks with no name. Another interesting feature of Roxio Toast Titanium is Data Recovery which tries to rescue data from a damaged (i.e. scratched) optical disk. Though not 100% effective, the program works hard to rescue as much data as possible, meaning that data which was previously lost for good can now potentially be rescued.

As usual, Roxio Toast Titanium has some slight problems concerning inter-compatibility with older versions and with software from other manufacturers.

In all, Roxio Toast Titanium is a complete utility for working with optical disk formats, whether you're burning, recovering or backing-up data.

Download Roxio Toast Titanium 11.1 in Softonic
