Desktop real estate can become a problem if you use windows a lot. Deskspace is a slick, flashy tool that gives you six desktops you can flick between with a beautiful 3D cube interface.

This 14 day trial version doesn't have all the features - you can't set particular programs to specific desktops in this demo - but it gives you a good idea of the benefits of multiple desktops. The 3D cube, activated with a hot key, and rotated with the mouse gives Deskspace its 'wow factor'. It's fast, smooth, great to look at and is sure to impress people!

With Deskspace you can open programs and files on different desktops (or deskspaces), meaning you'll feel less cluttered. The developers suggest assigning different desktops different tasks, and you could also set different wallpapers up on your desktops and change depending on your mood.

When inactive, Deskspace is surprisingly light on resources, but if you are using a lot of applications, activating the cube could push your processor a bit. Having six deskspaces will not solve performance issues - if your machine struggles with multitasking hungry applications, this won't help!

It is the desk clutter that's the clincher with Deskspace. Once you're used to having more than one desktop it really is hard to go back, and coupled with the sexy 3D interface this makes Deskspace a really attractive package.

Desk Hedron is another attempt at enlarging cramped desktop real estate by giving you up to nine depsktops you can rotate between.

This is just an EXE file, so there's no need to install it. This gives it the advantage of being small and quick to use, but also partly explains why it's so simple. Double clicking the .EXE file will plant a while rectangle in the system tray, and when clicked, your desktop will shrink back, and using the cursor keys or mouse wheel you can rotate to a new clean desktop.

Right clicking the rectangle allows you to add more desktops. You can open whatever you want on any desktop, though when you change desktops processes don't stop. If you have iTunes playing, you'll continues to hear it even if you're on a different desktop.

The graphical effect when changing desktops is attractive without being intrusive - flicking between desktops is quick and smooth. Unfortunately Desk Hedron doesn't support multi-monitor setups, and unlike Apple's Spaces, you can't pre-assign certain applications to specific desktops.

Despite lacking options, Desk Hedron is a lightweight program that can help clear up your cluttered monitor.

If you're tired of your old desktop and changing wallpapers doesn't turn you on anymore, maybe you should try something a little more radical. In which case, Shock Desktop 3D could be just what you're looking for!

With Shock Desktop 3D you can have your standard Windows desktop completely overhauled and give it an amazing three-dimensional look. As soon as you run the program, your current desktop will be replaced by a 3D environment where you can freely move your icons as if they were some sort of tokens. The animation effects are so realistic that it really feels like the icons have become actual objects.

You can choose to have your icons rendered as rectangles or as 3D cubes, which makes them even more similar to small toys for playing with. You'll probably spend a while tossing cubes around, piling them up and organizing them on your new desktop. Luckily the program lets you save these layouts as predefined user profiles.

That said, the truth is that Show Desktop 3D is not really a very useful app. It does look gorgeous on your PC but it doesn't really add any new functionality to your desktop. Besides, it doesn't let you use wallpapers, which I think is a major drawback.

Shock Desktop 3D applies a very eye-catching three-dimensional effect to your Windows desktop.

When you activate the button of the program in the system tray it launches a three-dimensional vision of four desks. They can be ordered as faces of a cube, as a tapestry with all the desks in the same light or as a succession of them arranged in a row. Shock 4Way 3D has a system of keystrokes to change the view and move from one desktop to another with ease.

The combinations can be customized, but by default they are: Ctrl + Alt + `: Changes to the active window; Ctrl + Alt +1: Changes to the first screen; Ctrl + Alt +2: Changes to the second screen; Ctrl + Alt +3: Changes to the third screen and Ctrl + Alt +4: Changes to the fourth screen.

This program looks great and makes you feel like you're working with a really flashy operating system but be warned - it hogs your RAM terribly and will slow down anything else you have running unless you've got plenty of RAM installed in the first place.

A great looking program that quite literally, adds a new dimension to the way you work on multiple desktops.

Dear Windows users, you have always had to suffer from Mac users' statements regarding the superiority of their system stability, functionalities and graphic design.

For the latter it wasn't really possible to counteract anything, until now. The day of revenge is arrived, or it's nearly here at least.

If you prefer, you can also choose a 3D flip or a 3D carousel menu. They all present the different desktop with the applications you may have opened and the background image you have.

Linux users may argue that they already had this utility many years ago but first of all Linux is not normal-user friendly (ok, now Ubuntu has made things a bit easier) and it wasn't anyway so graphically pleasant and so fast to load.
