What it does

The Lite version of DAEMON Tools only lets you emulate up to four virtual drives but doesn't have the extra features of the Pro and Advanced editions, such as support for DVD HD and Blu-Ray drivers, or the ability to create image files. However this version of DAEMON Tools is just perfect for the average home user, who will hardly need to emulate more than a couple drives simultaneously.

DAEMON Tools supports a wide variety of formats and is a really useful app for accessing your CD collection without having to carry them around, protecting them from scratches in the process.

Usability

Emulating a virtual drive may not seem that useful at first sight, but if you think about it, it has many advantages: you can load any image file directly on your system, you save the time and effort of CD burning and plus, virtual drives are much faster than actual CD units.

After installation – and the necessary system reboot – DAEMON Tools shows up as an unobtrusive icon in the system tray from which you can access the program's main tools and the configuration menu. All you have to do is browse to where your image file is stored and 'mount' it as a virtual drive using DAEMON Tools.

Selecting files for data and music creation was simple and straight forward. Burning times are fast with no errors or hiccups. Files can be further protected and backed up with high compression and encryption.

For music Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 supports standard audio CDs, as well as both MP3 and WMA compatible DVD/Blu-ray players. Movies can be burned to DVD from VOB, BUP, or IFO. There is also an option to burn Blu-rays, though we have not tested that feature at this time.

Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013’s virtual disc image selection is rather limited. The software can only read and burn ISO, CUE/BIN, and ASHDISC file formats. If you happen to be using Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 in conjunction with other disc programs, such as Nero or Daemon Tools, you may need to convert disc formats.

Be careful of the erase disc option. Formatting a DVD is almost too fast and simple; there is even a check box to erase much quicker. It would have been better if there were one or two more confirmations to prevent accidental deletions.

Overall Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 is a great piece of burning and ripping software for anyone using physical discs.

Microsoft Office 2013 is by no means a revolutionary update to the venerable office suite but this is the first version of Microsoft Office that has good cloud integration and a touch-friendly interface.

SkyDrive will be the backbone of Microsoft Office 2013. Settings, documents, templates, and even custom user dictionaries will all be synced to the cloud so that you have a consistent Office experience on whatever device, wherever you are.

There are also new social features shown in Microsoft Office 2013 including automatic picture importing from services like Facebook and Flickr. Easier sharing also brings along easier collaboration. Users can now hold a multi-person video conference while editing a single document.

PowerPoint will also feature full stylus support to make giving presentations easier. Users can annotate their slides instantly. There's also a great new feature where the presenter can have notes on his or her screen but only have the main slide open on the audience's screen.

Outlook 2013

One of the more impressive features that was built into Outlook 2013 is its ability to intelligently suggest events and appointments. Outlook will detect when someone wants to create an appointment by looking for locations, time, and specific keywords. This makes adding events to your calendar much easier.

Last but not least, Microsoft also announced powerful developer tools to create plugins for Outlook. They demoed a fully interactive Bing map within a body of an email, without having to jump into a browser.

Installation issues

Installation of Microsoft Office 2013 can be a bit of a pain on Windows 7. The Office 2013 preview downloads as an image file, which will need to be burned to a disc or you'll need a drive virtualization tool like Daemon Tools to create and mount the image. Windows 8 users will not have to worry about this as the operating system includes a disc virtualization tool.

Compatibility concerns

Microsoft Office 2013 creates a nice ecosystem for those already using their office suite but it may not be enough to woo users from other services or applications that are free. Microsoft also announced that Microsoft Office 2013 will only be compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8. XP and Vista users will be left out in the cold.

Conclusion

While Microsoft Office 2013 received some nice updates, there was nothing revolutionary that was announced. Microsoft played the catch-up game with Microsoft Office 2013, giving its office suite many features its competitors like Google Drive and Apple Mail have had for a while.

Overall, Microsoft Office 2013 offers some huge improvements over its previous versions with great cloud and touch features but this may not be enough for it to say as the king of office suites.

An ample variety of formats is supported for both images and music files, and you may also use the software to burn projects containing your own files. One feature that would give ISOpen a lot more appeal would be a drive emulator, something that allows you to test image files before actually burning them to CD / DVD. Unfortunately this isn’t included and if you want that functionality you must look elsewhere; Daemon Tools being our favorite.

Where ISOpen trips up is in the highly-restrictive shareware version that works for 30 days but apparently on a very limited level. For this reason we prefer the experience and reliability of MagicISO, a piece of software that does all the same jobs and some extra on top.
