DeSmuME is a Nintendo DS emulator that allows you to play games on your PC using DS ROM files, which you can download from the Internet.

The GameBoy has come a long way since we first saw that big white and grey block at the end of the last century. Its great, great, great grandson, the Nintendo DS is now even more powerful than the high-tech machines doing the rounds in the arcades of the early 90s. In fact, it's so good that sometimes you'll want to play with it in the office, which obviously you can't. Well, actually you can. Actually you can't. Well, with DeSmuME you sort of can. Let us explain...

The first thing you'll need to realize is that downloading DS ROM files is illegal, so on your own head be it if the FBI rolls up outside your house. Legalities aside, DeSmuME is a pretty decent emulator, originally designed for games programmers to develop and test their latest creations. DeSmuME can be a little tricky to set up, but once running you'll be able to enjoy a huge selection of games in ROM format.

DeSmuME is a solid Nintendo DS emulator for your PC.

Download DeSmuME 0.9.8 in Softonic

Angry Birds Space 1.4.1

Angry Birds Space is the next installment of Rovio's massive hit game. Like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="323599">Angry Birds Rio</taglink> and Angry Birds Seasons, there's a new scenario, but this time the gameplay has an important gravitational change.

Fresh gameplay

In Angry Birds Space, the gravitational pull of planets affects your birds' trajectory, making this game much more tactical than ever before. The basic principle of the game remains the same - catapult the Angry Birds at the structures the pigs are sitting in, using the lowest number of birds possible.

In Angry Birds Space, you'll be attacking structures on planets from space, using their gravity to get the perfect trajectory. This Angry birds requires more thought than previous games, and feels much fresher for that.

Graphics and sound

There are 60 levels in Angy Birds Space, including bonus levels that appear as you progress. There's a PC demo for you to try before you buy. The graphics and sound have been improved, meaning Angry Birds Space is the best looking so far in the series. The gameplay changes are fun, but it's still a little easy.

Angry Birds Space makes some fun changes to the formula, and is sufficiently improved to make it worth playing for fans and newcomers alike.

Download Angry Birds Space 1.4.1 in Softonic

ZD Soft Screen Recorder 5.2

ZD Soft Screen Recorder is a screen recording application that will allow you to record and share your screen with ease.

This little program has been around for years, but it's done a great job of improving over time. ZD Soft Screen Recorder started out as a modest app, but it's become a great tool that both looks and acts like a much more expensive program.

Each ZD Soft Screen Recorder operation is accompanied by a Capture Wizard, which makes the process supremely simple (you don't have to use it if you're feeling independent, though!). Here you'll see the options to create a screencast, capture a video, record gameplay and even share your screen. In many cases, you would actually need separate software to carry out these processes, but not with ZD Soft Screen Recorder!

The actual recording process is very simple. ZD Soft Screen Recorder explains it each step of the way. You'll also be able to control the recording using F8, and by using the minimized controls in the taskbar. Remember that ZD Soft Screen Recorder is a pretty intuitive app, so if you're recording from <taglink type="program" country="en" id="25339">VLC</taglink>, for example, it will automatically focus on the VLC window.

ZD Soft Screen Recorder also has pretty comprehensive audio and video settings, which should keep even advanced users happy. Of course, there are slightly less technical options you can tweak too, and if you have no interest in the nitty gritty, ZD Soft Screen Recorder will make the decisions for you. In fact, the only problem with ZD Soft Screen Recorder is that the number of formats you can save video and screenshots is a little limited. Of course, with videos in both .AVI and .WMP, you have most bases covered, but if you want any other format, you'll have to use a separate converter like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="72054">Format Factory</taglink>.

ZD Soft Screen Recorder is an excellent recording program for screencasts, videos and games.

Download ZD Soft Screen Recorder 5.2 in Softonic

Agrar Simulator 2013 1.0.0.6

Agrar Simulator 2013 is a game, like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="6649349">Farming Simulator 2013</taglink>, that allows players to drive farm tractors and move cargo. The short demo features several small tutorials designed to familiarize players with the fundamentals of operating their vehicles. These instructional segments contain poor directions and information, often times omitting the controls for completing such tasks.

You will need to browse through the options and settings to learn how to perform routine maneuvers such as boarding their tractor and rigging trailers. Without doing this, players may find themselves unable to board a vehicle or randomly teleporting toward spawn points.

Even after getting a grasp of the Agrar Simulator 2013's inputs, it can be frustrating to control a tractor. In one instance accelerating too quickly caused the tractor to nosedive into the ground, spin on its front tires, and finish with a hop back to stable grounding. During a second test a finicky checkpoint required finesse precision in order to register as completed. Suffice to say, the lumbering tractor required several grazes and flat out misses, before finally aligning with its mark.

Agrar Simulator 2013 lacks polish and any sense of realism. However, there is a charm in favor of its shoddy execution. The demo offers a large amount of amusement from the game's unpredictable and outlandish flaws. Given UIG's track record with past titles, such as Woodcutter Simulator, one could assume that the strange design is quite purposeful.

Agrar Simulator 2013's bizarre functionality is further compounded with major tractor companies such as Massey Ferguson and Valtra. This could have strong appeal to diehard fans of farming equipment. For most players, there will likely be a gleeful shock watching a Challenger barrel off the side of the road and massacre a flock of chickens.

Agrar Simulator 2013's demo should be downloaded and enjoyed by anyone that wants to see things go array. Those wanting a down to earth simulation may be in for a great surprise.

Download Agrar Simulator 2013 1.0.0.6 in Softonic

Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus 15.0.4454.1002

Microsoft Office 2013 is a suite of productivity applications designed to help you improve the way you work.

What's new in Office 2013?

Microsoft Office 2013 is by no means a revolutionary update to the venerable office suite but this is the first version of Microsoft Office that has good cloud integration and a touch-friendly interface.

SkyDrive will be the backbone of Microsoft Office 2013. Settings, documents, templates, and even custom user dictionaries will all be synced to the cloud so that you have a consistent Office experience on whatever device, wherever you are.

There are also new social features shown in Microsoft Office 2013 including automatic picture importing from services like Facebook and Flickr. Easier sharing also brings along easier collaboration. Users can now hold a multi-person video conference while editing a single document.

What you get inside Office 2013

PowerPoint 2013

Microsoft kept the ribbon interface (love it or hate it) in PowerPoint 2013, but it is now hidden by default on the Window RT version of Microsoft Office 2013. You can bring up the ribbon with a tap of a button. The ribbon can also be hidden on the desktop version with a simple double click.

PowerPoint will also feature full stylus support to make giving presentations easier. Users can annotate their slides instantly. There's also a great new feature where the presenter can have notes on his or her screen but only have the main slide open on the audience's screen.

Outlook 2013

Outlook 2013 is receiving a Metro-styled interface as well, but with lots of new functionality too. First of all, Aero Peek, a feature that was first introduced in Windows 7, makes its way into Outlook. With Aero Peek, users can now quickly hover over their Contacts, Calendar, or Tasks and have a fully manipulable pop up display.

One of the more impressive features that was built into Outlook 2013 is its ability to intelligently suggest events and appointments. Outlook will detect when someone wants to create an appointment by looking for locations, time, and specific keywords. This makes adding events to your calendar much easier.

Last but not least, Microsoft also announced powerful developer tools to create plugins for Outlook. They demoed a fully interactive Bing map within a body of an email, without having to jump into a browser.

Word 2013

Word 2013 didn't receive as much of an overhaul, but Microsoft worked hard on polishing it up. Settings, defaults, templates and user dictionaries will all be synced between each version of Word so you'll have one unified user experience with Word on every one of your devices. There's a new reading mode that formats your documents to be touch friendly like pages of a book. Videos from YouTube can now be embedded directly within documents.

OneNote 2013

OneNote has always been an excellent note taking app and this latest version is no different. Users can import pictures, video, and annotate all of these things within the application. Microsoft demoed its new "radial menu" for touch friendly editing. Hold down and a circular menu will pop up. Drag your finger to whatever option you want and let go. This interface is intuitive and powerful, letting users change fonts, colors, and formatting within seconds. Unfortunately, this touch menu has only been featured in the OneNote MX preview application.

Excel 2013

Microsoft finally acknowledged how complicated Excel is for the average user. Excel 2013 is still going to be a powerful tool for data analysis, but Microsoft has made an effort to simplify processes across the application. Users now have access to menus that preform "quick analysis" for their data, simply by selecting an option from a menu. Excel looks at the data and offers the best solution for presenting or organizing it.

Installation issues

Installation of Microsoft Office 2013 can be a bit of a pain on Windows 7. The Office 2013 preview downloads as an image file, which will need to be burned to a disc or you'll need a drive virtualization tool like Daemon Tools to create and mount the image. Windows 8 users will not have to worry about this as the operating system includes a disc virtualization tool.

Compatibility concerns

Microsoft Office 2013 creates a nice ecosystem for those already using their office suite but it may not be enough to woo users from other services or applications that are free. Microsoft also announced that Microsoft Office 2013 will only be compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8. XP and Vista users will be left out in the cold.

Conclusion

While Microsoft Office 2013 received some nice updates, there was nothing revolutionary that was announced. Microsoft played the catch-up game with Microsoft Office 2013, giving its office suite many features its competitors like Google Drive and Apple Mail have had for a while.

Overall, Microsoft Office 2013 offers some huge improvements over its previous versions with great cloud and touch features but this may not be enough for it to say as the king of office suites.

Download Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus 15.0.4454.1002 in Softonic

Agent P Strikes Back for Windows 8 is a platforming game where you have to rescue your fellow secret agents.

Agent P Strikes Back for Windows 8 is free but that's because it's more of a demo than a full featured game. There are only three levels available with no option to purchase a full version. Perhaps Disney plans to release a paid version in the future.

Gameplay in Agent P Strikes Back for Windows 8 is basic platformer. You can perform double jumps and scale walls. The beginning levels are easy to get around but the third level introduces wires that electrocute Perry if you touch them. This creates some challenging platforming to reach hidden items. There are 100 flippers in a level that can be collected, which promotes exploration if you want to collect them all. Some are well hidden so take your time to find them.

Agent P Strikes Back for Windows 8 is a repetitive game. There is only one type of enemy and only one way to fight them. Robots move back and forth and will shoot at you if you're in their sights. To fight these robots, you'll have to get close them, activate your special wristwatch, which rips an arm off the robot for you to use against it. It's a real shame that there isn't more variation in Agent P Strikes Back for Windows 8.

Overall, Agent P Strikes Back for Windows 8 is a solid platform game but it's too short and too repetitive to keep players coming back for more.

Download Agent P Strikes Back for Windows 8 1.0.0.18 in Softonic

Toribash is an unusual combat game where your role is simply to make 3D figures smash the hell out of each other.

Toribash features a range of fighting styles including Sumo, Kick Boxing and Judo. The graphics are in the form of vectored 3D characters, the gameplay is extremely limited and the controls are frustrating but Toribash can be fun once you get the hang of it. You have to click on a section of your fighter's body and then select the action you want to perform using the mouse.

The character will then immediately spring into life and smash the bits out of the computer opponent. Note that because of this, Toribash may not be a game suitable for kids as heads and limbs break off with alarming regularity and blood runs freely although it's not exactly shocking because of the poor graphics. The impressive aspect of Toribash is the realistic fluid movements of the characters. However, that's about the only thing that impresses.

In this demo version, you can only perform limited moves plus you can't earn belts but for $20, you can upgrade to the full version. The overall gameplay would be enhanced significantly if the characters were at least given names or personalities, the scenarios a bit more imaginative and if there were some kind of competition mode.

Toribash is fine if you just want to smash-up some limbs but the gameplay is awkward, limited and not something that will have you coming back for more.

Download Toribash 4.2 in Softonic

F1 Race Stars is Codemasters' entry into the karting genre. It takes classic Formula 1 racing turns it into a fun caricature. It features real drivers like Hamilton and Alonso, and licensed teams.

With crazy tracks and power-ups, F1 Race Stars is a long way from the serious business of Formula 1. The tracks, spread around the globe, are great fun. In this demo you can race the German track, which takes in well known features of the whole country and makes a circuit out of them. The cartoon style looks really good, and the cars and drivers look the part too.

The biggest surprise in F1 Race Stars is the handling. Cars are fast and nimble, but there is no drifting. In keeping with F1, you have to brake and take the racing line to get through corners fastest. It's a huge change for karting games, and one that makes F1 Race Stars stand out. Some corners feature KERS, which builds a boost to let you accelerate our of the corner, but it will still take a while to get used to.

What F1 Race Stars gets right from the start is the general feeling. The drivers look fantastic, all recognizable and clearly loving caracatures of the real people. With weather and pitting, plus the cornering, it's clear that F1 Race Stars is made with a lot of respect for the sport, while still trying to be an accessible and fun game anyone can play.

With split-screen multiplayer, hugely inventive and fun tracks and great presentation, F1 Race Stars looks like an excellent and surprising karting game.

Download F1 Race Stars in Softonic

LEGO The Lord of the Rings continues the series of family friendly action puzzle games, after LEGO <taglink type="program" country="en" id="100599">Harry Potter</taglink>, Indiana Jones, <taglink type="program" country="en" id="3346888">Batman</taglink>, Star Wars and <taglink type="program" country="en" id="320388">Pirates of the Caribbean</taglink>.

This demo lets you play through 'Helm's Deep', where our heroes in the fortress of Hornburg are under attack from the forces of the Wizard Saruman.

What we expect from a LEGO game is a fun take on the source material, and that is what you get with LEGO The Lord of the Rings. The gameplay is similar to previous games, with simple action and puzzles to work through. The puzzles are better suited to kids, since they can be tedious for adults. The cut scenes are as charming as ever, although in this demo they do stick very closely to the scenes in the LOTR movies. The dark tone of Lord of the Rings isn't a perfect fit for LEGO's humor.

The graphics are excellent, as usual. The scene on the battlements, with the army of orcs spreading out into the distance below is epic to look at, and there is some excellent use of perspective that makes the action even more impressive. Like Batman, LEGO The Lord of the Rings uses voice acting instead of just the noises and expressions that the series started out with. However, the voices are good, and don't detract from the game. It is still the animations and expressions that give LEGO The Lord of the Rings its funniest jokes.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings doesn't look like a major development for the LEGO series, but it's another polished action puzzle game that will amuse adults and children alike.

Download LEGO The Lord of the Rings in Softonic

Each Plants vs Zombies round starts with a clear lawn, and you have to build up your defenses, usually starting with sun producing sunflowers, then peashooters, and so on.

As you progress through Plants vs Zombies you are given a larger armory including mines, bombs and more. While your capabilities improve, so do the zombies - you'll meet a range of zombies which require different tactics to be destroyed. The 60 minute demo gives you a great introduction to this really well balanced game. The attacking zombies are paced just right, so you're always under pressure to keep planting, while you have to do pretty badly to get overrun and lose.

The graphics are cheerful and detailed, while the sound features some amusing effects that never get irritating. the main game is broken up with mini-games, like bowling, which help to keep it feeling fresh. The mixture of real time strategy and cartoon zombies is pretty irresistible, and it's hard to imagine someone not enjoying Plants vs Zombies

Plants vs Zombies is cheerful, fun, and a remarkably addictive game.

Pinball FX2 is the same game you can play on Xbox Live, now available for Windows 8.

This is essentially a demo version, and only features one table - the Sorcerer's Lair. It's still a great introduction to one of the best pinball titles ever made. The table is really well designed and animated, with great sound effects.

Developer's ZEN studios have created a game where the pinball table almost feels tactile. While some of the animations would be impossible on a real table, the basic design feels realistic. This makes Pinball FX2 feel like enhanced pinball, rather than fictional pinball!

With one table, this version of Pinball FX2 won't keep you occupied for too long, but it's a good example of what should be to come now Xbox Live is properly integrated with Windows 8.

Great graphics and sound, plus excellent in game physics make Pinball FX2 a must for Windows 8 gamers.

Download Pinball FX2 for Windows 8 in Softonic

Project Giana is a free demo game for PCs. Originally released on Nintendo DS in 2009, the game is available through Steam Greenlight currently.

Project Giana is considered a derivative of The Great Giana Sisters, which was essentially a Super Mario Bros clone. This original PC release is expected to be followed by releases on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Based around the concept of a little girl stuck in a dream world, Project Giana lets you explore various worlds with beautiful graphics. You can bounce around to avoid opponents and obstacles in each level, as well as collect gems. Jumping on the heads of most enemies will defeat them.

Giana can switch between two appearances at will - either cute or more punky. Each form has its own abilities and vulnerabilities that go along with it. Whenever Giana transforms in Project Giana however, so does the appearance of the dream world. You can switch from a landscape made up of candy to something more nightmarish very quickly as a result. The music will change along with the scenery switch as well.

You can use an Xbox controller or just your mouse and keyboard to control Giana, although the latter is a bit clunky and difficult to maneuver. In this demo version of Project Giana, also note that your progress will not get saved should you die.

The graphics are what makes Project Giana stand out most, although gamers of all ages should find gameplay fun and challengeing.

Download Project Giana in Softonic

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 (PES 2013)

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 is the latest version of Konami's popular soccer game for Windows. Although PES 2013 looks very similar to <taglink type="program" country="en" id="324587">Pro Evoultion Soccer 2012</taglink>, it includes some subtle changes designed to improved both gameplay and graphics.

Features

The gameplay in Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 is more manual than the previous version, making it more like a proper soccer simulation, rather than the arcade-style action of PES 2012. Though some elements seem to be heavily inspired by <taglink type="program" country="en" id="323809">FIFA 12</taglink>, this is no bad thing.

Usability

The rather restrictive control system of PES 2012 has been given an overhaul for Pro Evolution Soccer 2013. Developer Konami calls the new control system, ‘PES FullControl’. There's a new dynamic first touch feature, where a player can trap the ball using the R2 button in order to gain instant control of the ball.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 offers manual passing, and manual shooting is introduced to the game for the first time, allowing you to modify the height and power of each. FullControl also improves dribbling, slowing down player speeds and allowing players to add various styles to their close control using the R2 button.

The manual control tweaks delivered by the FullControl system in Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 definitely makes for an improved gameplay experience, which will delight experienced PES fans. However, novices will still be able to pick up and play the game without a problem.

The tactics screen from the previous version hasn't been added too - and it still feels a little puny. Having said that, the in-game strategy changes have been made a lot cooler by the fact that the coach appears in a little box in the corner of the screen to shout instructions when you summon him.

There are still some plays in Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 that make it very easy to score. For example, you can still get behind a defense effortlessly with a long through-ball/chip combo.

Quality

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 focuses on improving player likenesses so that players in the game behave like their real life counterparts - a system dubbed as 'PlayerID' by the developer. Famous players will run, turn, trap, move the ball and even celebrate like they do in real life.

In terms of player likenesses, PES 2013 is the closest to reality we've seen from a soccer game - better even than FIFA 12. The graphics as a whole in Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 are fantastic, from the slick team entrances to the detail of the kits and footwear.

Unfortunately, player animation in Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 is patchy in places. The way players turn feels clunky and unrealistic and goalkeeper throw-outs are laughably exaggerated and jerky. In fact, the supposed improvements to the goalkeepers from the previous version seem to have not worked at all - actually goalies seem more calamitous than ever!

The Player Impact engine in Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 is quite impressive; you notice how players hang into each other and how that influences your (freedom of) movement. However, it still lags behind FIFA's engine in terms of the extent of the collision animations.

Conclusion

Those who were disappointed by PES 2012 will appeased somewhat by the changes made in Pro Evolution Soccer 2013, but there's still plenty of room for improvement in the game.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 is a good quality soccer sim which looks great and now gives you more control than ever over the gameplay.

Download Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 (PES 2013) in Softonic

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Demo

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turn basked strategy game where you control a small squad of soldiers to defend Earth against an alien invasion.

You've heard the story a million times before. An unknown vessel arrives on Earth with a big crash. Aliens inside start killing everyone and a full scale invasion begins. While XCOM: Enemy Unknown doesn't have an original story, it tries to differentiate itself from other alien invasion games by including an interesting turn based combat system and RPG elements.

Graphics

The graphics in XCOM: Enemy Unknown are solid but won't blow you away. It uses the Unreal Engine, which is solid, but fails to impress in the era of Battlefield 3 and Skyrim.

There are plenty of pretty pre-rendered cut scenes but the character models lack some of the intricate details to make them seem realistic. In game, the graphics are good with a top down, 3rd person view. XCOM: Enemy Unknown has plenty of neon highlights for guiding players through a level and in its menus.

Gameplay

This is where XCOM: Enemy Unknown really shines. While turn based gameplay in a strategy game isn't new, it combines elements from shooters. You will rely heavily on cover in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. If you place your soldiers behind poor cover, they will take plenty of damage and may even be killed instantly.

You start off with 4 soldiers under your control with the ability to add a couple more to your squad when you've leveled up enough. Having a small squad puts more pressure to keep them all alive or you will be at a severe disadvantage.

One interesting feature that XCOM: Enemy Unknown included is the ability to climb on top buildings, giving the player more ways to strategize on how to approach a level. There is also an interesting attack mechanic in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. You are given a read out of your probability of hitting an enemy and the chance of a critical hit. This type of combat reminds me of Fallout 3 and makes careful planning important.

Sound

The soundtrack of XCOM: Enemy Unknown is good with swelling orchestral scores to increase the weight of the alien onslaught. Most of the music will be irrelevant as it's clearly written to be background music as you decide on where to place your soldiers.

The sound design in levels is good, creating a creepy and tense atmosphere. The noises that the aliens make in XCOM: Enemy Unknown can be terrifying, adding to its creepy atmosphere. Still, XCOM: Enemy Unknown won't scare you with its sound design.

Preview wrap-up

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a solid strategy game that introduces RPG elements to create a unique experience. While the story leaves much to be desired, XCOM: Enemy Unknown's gameplay is enough to keep players engaged.

Download XCOM: Enemy Unknown Demo in Softonic
