Mozilla Firefox 18 is the latest version of the popular web browser and brings with it a few key and welcome new features. First among them is the company's claim to a speedier, safer browsing experience. Tests reveal that this newest version of Mozilla Firefox is certainly quick to load even the most graphics intense pages.

Firefox 18 also now features secure connections when performing Google searches to improve privacy and there's an updated site identity indicator in the URL bar. Windows users also now get silent updates while Mac users on Lion or above can use Firefox in full-screen mode.

Mozilla Firefox's new tab layout itself is a pretty noticeable new feature. Something completely new to Mozilla Firefox is Facebook integration. Firefox now supports Facebook's social API so you can have dedicated buttons for Facebook in your browser. Mozilla Firefox supports Facebook's Messenger within Firefox, giving users desktop notifications as well as a persistent friends list and activity feed on the right. Conversations will open up as overlays on top of whatever website you're on so you can multitask while you chat.

Usability

Mozilla Firefox really changed the way people browse the web when it originally burst onto the scene. Today Firefox remains an incredibly powerful and customizable browser, although competition from Google Chrome has given it a definite run for its money.

Conclusion

Mozilla Firefox 20's interface isn't much different from previous versions, but the features it has added certainly make for a nicer, more enjoyable browsing experience overall.

If you start typing anywhere in the Amazon Cloud Player for PC window, it will automatically start searching for relevant songs or artists.

Downloading songs is simple. You drag-and-drop the album or songs into a small window on the right and the app starts downloading the songs.

Overall, Amazon Cloud Player for PC is a streamlined program for listening to music bought through Amazon.

Meant for simple playback

The design of Amazon Cloud Player for PC is meant for simplicity. You can play music, download songs from your Amazon account, and define local folders.

What you can't do it change streaming audio quality or change the theme. The black background highlights the album covers, but if you are missing the album cover from music, then you only have a generic album icon.

There is also no equalizer or presets in Amazon Cloud Player for PC, so you have little control over the sound of your music.

Great for Amazon users

If you buy a lot of music through Amazon, then Amazon Cloud Player for PC is perfect for you. It allows you to easily download all your purchased music and offers simple playback that will satisfy most users.

Ok, so MyImgur is pretty ugly, but it claims to be the only official Imgur uploader, and it is supported by Imgur itself. If you're a regular Imgur user, and you like to upload images from your desktop, it gets the job done, quickly and easily.

If you want to upload an Imgur image, just fill in your account credentials, and once you get the verification number, you're good to go. You can use MyImgur to upload by dragging and dropping photos into the app, or by using the add button in the top left. You can control what gets uploaded and stored with MyImgur by toggling the Upload and Capture buttons. The maker explains what these options do, but it's not very clear.

You can also manage your Imgur account with MyImgur - delete images, make albums and capture your screen, but you won't be able to modify images already in your Imgur account without actually going to the Imgur website.

MyImgur's main problem is that it's ugly, and not very easy to use. There are loads of unclear icons, and explanations that don't make sense. If you're already familiar with the program and Imgur yourself, you might be able to just muddle through, but if you're not, you're not going to warm to MyImgur. That said, it does seem to be the only officially supported uploader out there, so maybe you don't have much of a choice!

The interface is streamlined and very easy to understand. The majority of commands are controlled with the tool bar, corresponding hotkeys, or editing menus brought up by right clicking. The biggest design improvement is the addition of the right hand column Scratch Area which contains all of your images.

Unlike the 2010 version, images will no longer simply be dumped on the canvas. Instead you can easily drag and drop images between the scratch and canvas, allowing you better control of your final publication.

Quality

The layout is clean and avoids any unused space or clutter. The program generally functions quickly, even when you add in many large and detailed images. You can still edit clip art from Office.com and other sites that you have already downloaded even if you become disconnected from the web. When you are connected your work will automatically be saved to cloud storage.

Conclusion

Microsoft Publisher 2013 is a powerful tool to construct various printings and publications. The ability to quickly gather images from Office.com and other image sites will make it easier to find just the right image. Nokia Music for Windows 8 is a desktop version of Nokia’s streaming radio service available on Windows Phone 7.5. Similar to Pandora and Spotify, Nokia Music allows unlimited audio streaming of “Mixes” categorized by artist or genres. You can also download Mixes for offline use or use Nokia Music for local music on your computer. While Nokia Music for Windows 8 has a $3.99 monthly subscription, there is a seven day free trial that includes all features.

How it Works

Nokia Music uses streaming Mixes which are similar to Pandora. You cannot select specific tracks for on demand listening. Instead, each Mix is a radio station that focuses on an artist or genre and provides similar sounding tracks. You can browse through Nokia’s premade Mixes or create your own. The default Mixes include various genres, top charting music, recommendations from popular musicians, sponsored music, and more. Nokia’s library is large and includes various genres of music, standup comedy acts, and songs from TV ads. If you are not a subscriber you will be limited to only 30 second previews per track, which is far too short. Subscribers will be able to listen full length tracks.

Creating your own mix is much more limited as you can only search by artists and not other categories such as genre or time period. You can also only add in three artists at most, resulting in a limited selection of music. On the plus side any Mix, premade or your own, can be downloaded for offline listening. Offline tracks are unfortunately disabled for non-subscribers. If you’re not satisfied with Nokia’s selection of music you can also use the app to listen to your own local files.

How it feels

The layout is comprised on large and medium sized tiles grouped into sections. The sections of Nokia Music include the track you are currently listening to, previously Mixes, default Nokia Mixes, your own creations, downloaded music, and local music. On the main track page there are buttons to display a song’s lyrics or open a menu with the band’s information. Depending on the artist, this can include a bio, image gallery, their Twitter feed, upcoming shows, similar artists, and Mixes they appear in. This is a wealth of information that will help you learn more about bands and discover new music.

Right clicking on Mix will provide buttons to download the track, buy it from Nokia’s store, or remove it from the front sections. The options menu includes changing accounts, updating subscriptions, providing feedback to Nokia, troubleshooting, and permissions. Settings allow you to adjust audio quality based on your connection type (Wifi or mobile), permission to send personal data back to Nokia, display wallpapers, and if the app runs is allowed on the Lock screen. Nokia Music subscriptions are relatively new, yet the amount of options is surprisingly plentiful.

Quality

Nokia Music’s wide selection of music and comedy is very impressive. The quality of streaming audio is decent at 192kbps for all tracks. Downloading music is generally fast, although you can suffer delays and pauses in streaming if you download several Mixes at the same time. Music with offensive lyrics are either listed with a clear “Explicit” icon or are completely censored with more broadcast friendly versions. The latter is very surprising for an online streaming service. In most cases all of Nokia’s library is clean and there is no setting to listen to adult versions.

Accessing Nokia’s library requires either a Nokia account or Facebook along with a monthly subscription fee; this is also on top of the normal Microsoft account to run the app. Surprisingly, if you sign up with Facebook Nokia Music will not update your activity or provide any form of social linking. Without a subscription you will be limited to short 30 second clips and cannot download music.

Final word

Even though you need a subscription and cannot access on demand music, the app still provides an amazing selection of music and comedy as well as the ability to download Mixes. The amount of additional data about artists and lyrics helps to connect you to the music. Try out Nokia Music’s free trial to listen to a diverse assortment of music.

Rainlendar is a lightweight and customizable calendar for your desktop.

When I first launched Rainlendar I was impressed by the widget-like appearance. Widget are small, handy gadgets that can pop up on your screen to show you all types of information, from weather forecasts, to stock charts or the time and date. They are usually small, attractive and very discreetly fit on your desktop. Rainlendar’s elements similarly have that cloud-like feel. The notes, events and calendar windows float around on your desktop and can be moved about your screen and disappear or reappear in a touch.

Rainlendar stands out from classic calendar programs thanks to a highly customizable interface and the possibility to quickly and effortlessly jot down notes and important events. Although it only comes with two different skins, the program offers a link to www.customize.org, where you should find the style which suits your tastes. But Rainlendar doesn’t stop there. You can set up hotkeys to manage Rainlendar at the push of a key and, thanks to various plug-ins present in the program, integrate Rainlendar directly to other utilities like Outlook and iCalendar. Rainlendar is always within reach as a tray icon on your desktop and bringing it up just takes a click of your mouse.

Unfortunately Rainlendar’s real originality is also its weakness. The program offers a wide range of skins but adding these to the program is far from straightforward. You have to drag your downloaded skin into the Skins folder for the Rainlendar program file and then browse to the new skin from the ‘Edit Skin’ option in Rainlendar’s drop down menu.

We all need to check the meaning of a word or a sentence in a foreign language from time-to-time. And for those quick translations, Dictionary.NET is a great tool.

Dictionary.NET makes use of the technology behind Google Translator to offer you instant translations between more than 50 different languages, in all possible combinations. The program is meant to detect the languages automatically, though I have to say this feature didn't work that well for me.

Dictionary.NET doesn't require installation, and runs unnoticed in the background. You can open it with a keyboard shortcut, a mouse combination or from the program's icon on the System Tray, and then enter whatever word or sentence you want to translate. Another option – probably easier – is selecting a given word or sentence and then using the predefined keyboard shortcut or mouse combination to bring Dictionary.NET up with the translation already loaded.

That said, you should bear in mind that Dictionary.NET is still an automatic translator that doesn't produce perfect results. As long as you don't need professional translations, Dictionary.NET works perfectly fine for quick dictionary look-ups.

ModernMix can open Modern apps as the normal fullscreen, maximized fullscreen windows, or smaller windows. You can set different appearances for programs opened through the start menu or desktop. ModernMix can also be used to disable the app opening flip animation and display fullscreen Modern apps on the taskbar.

ModernMix includes a list of recently used applications where you can set how each one appears when opened. However, due to either a bug or strange design this list does not update in real time. Instead you must quit the program and reopen it to see new apps.

Usability

ModernMix is very straightforward and easy to understand. Even though it modifies Modern apps, ModernMix itself opens directly on the desktop in a window. All settings are controlled by toggling checkboxes that are clearly labeled and explained. There are also buttons to toggle automatic updates or quickly open the ModernMix forum.

When viewing a Modern app a ModerMix overlay will appear in the top right corner. Pressing this icon will switch between the three appearances modes. You can also use F10 to quickly switch through modes. In ModernMix’s settings menu you can choose to hide the overlay or change the hotkey.

Quality

ModernMix is rather plain looking with simple white backgrounds and basic menus. The Modern app overlays are small and may be unnoticed until rolled over and clicked. The taskbar icons use the same image as the Modern app’s tile. One downside is that taskbar hover previews do not always work, often times showing a blank screen.

ModernMix’s integration is seamless, which could lead you to forget that the app is even running. The app has no apparent performance issues, even when running multiple windows.

Conclusion

ModernMix is a great way to view Windows 8 apps on the desktop. The trial contains all the features of the full version for 30 days. While there are some minor bugs, ModernMix is a fast and simple way to change Modern app appearances.

The beta release of Chime has support for ten web services: Google+, Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, Quora, Flickr, GitHub, Foursquare, Reddit, and Stackoverflow. For Chime to recognize a service you must log into each of them separately from their main website. Once you’ve logged in to one or more of these services Chime will notify you of activity in three ways. First, a pop-up will show in the lower right corner of your desktop. Second, clicking the Chime extension icon will show a drop down list of all unread alerts. Last, you can open a Chime tab that will provide all past notifications.

With all of these great features it's a shame that Chime does not support other popular web services such as LinkedIn, Tumblr, or Outlook. Hopefully these will be included in the final release.

Usability

Chime is intuitive and easy to use. You will be presented with large icons of each of the supported web services, though there are no rollovers or headers for ones you might not be familiar with. Clicking on an icon will take you to the corresponding website where you can log in. Chime's functionality depends on your settings on each individual website. For example, if you disable notifications on Facebook, then Chime will have nothing to intercept. Clicking on a notification will take you directly to the corresponding website.

Despite Chime’s name there are no actual audio notifications or settings to change how notifications appear. At present you can only choose to enable/disable desktop notifications. You can filter and hide each service type in both the drop down menu and Chime tab. However, if you do not have log in cookies enabled filtering will log you out of a service.

Quality

Chime is coordinated with each network’s prime color: Facebook is blue, Reddit is orange, etc. Whenever a notification pops up or is checked it will have a clear colored banner. Chime has slow down when first logging into a service, especially if it’s accumulating hundreds of unread emails or replies. After the initial hiccup Chime works smoothly without noticeable performance issues.

Conclusion

Chime is a great way to stay on top of ten popular web services and social networks. The beta might have some minor performance and functionality issues, but it’s still an excellent means of monitoring popular sites.

While Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 8 lives a double life as a touch-based and desktop browser, Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 only presents the desktop version of IE 10. Still, there are plenty of interface and upgrades under the hood.

Interface

The interface of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 has changed only a little. The forward and back buttons are integrated into the window, making the look of Internet Explorer 10 Preview more seamless. Tabs and the address bar share the same space. If you have a lot of tabs open, the interface can look a bit cluttered.

Menus have been simplified and the menu bar is still hidden by default. Users can get to all of the options from the little gear icon on the top right. The options menu is still there for the more technically inclined but it hasn't received any update.

Performance

Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 is the quickest version of the browser yet. Microsoft has included support for web standards like CSS animations, HTML5 spell checking, and improved JavaScript performance. The browser definitely feels a lot snappier than previous versions and puts it on par with competitors like Firefox and Chrome. Microsoft even partnered with Atari and Contre Jour to show off the power of Internet Explorer 10.

In our HTML5 benchmarks, Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 fell behind both Chrome and Opera but beat out Firefox. It is slightly faster than IE 9 and much faster than IE 8. Microsoft has done a great job of making Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 a speedy browser.

Security

IE has been very weak in the security department and Microsoft hopes to change this with Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7. The main security addition to Internet Explorer 10 Preview is "Enhanced Protected Mode," which will lock down parts of the Windows operating system, preventing the browser from accessing the OS. There will be specific pop-ups that will ask for permission to access part of the OS that a browser typically doesn't require. This will help prevent viruses or hackers from gaining access to your files, even if IE has been compromised.

Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 takes a page out of Google's play book and adds automatic updating. This way, users won't have to remember to update their browsers for the latest security and performance upgrades.

Do Not Track

It seems that just about every browser these days has a 'do not track' feature. This feature allows users to opt out of targeted advertising. With Google Chrome, you'll have to enable it yourself. Microsoft makes 'do not track' user friendly by having it be opt-out instead. This move by Microsoft has upset some companies with its do not track enabled by default. Some companies have announced that they will be ignoring Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7's do not track settings.

Integrated Flash

Like in Windows 8's version of Internet Explorer 10, Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 will feature integrated Adobe Flash support but only for selected sites. The Flash plugin isn't integrated into Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 yet but will be added in a future update for the browser.

Wrap-up

Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 offers a great look at the future of IE 10 but lacks the complete touch-focused redesigned of IE 10 for Windows 8. There are still interface elements in the Internet Explorer 10 Preview that look and feel antiquated. Unfortunately, its improvements aren't enough to sway users away from competitors like Firefox or Chrome.
