Pokki? Element Creation?

Pokki is an application platform, a little like Adobe Air. You'll need it to install the game, but rest assured - it's free and only takes a click or two. Element creation games are a niche area of gaming that you'll either love or hate. The involve combining basic scientific elements - like air, earth and water - and seeing what new elements you can come up with.

Finding elements

Little Alchemy has 270 elements for you to produce, and it marks them as you find them. There's a search function, which is perfect when you have discovered more than fit comfortably in the interface. If you've reached the final result of any given element (i.e., it can't be combined with anything to make something new), it will glow red when you mouse over.

Lovely graphics

There are several games like Little Alchemy, but what makes this one stand out is the lovely interface. The elements have a lovely, whimsical appearance, and they are easy to work with. Little Alchemy doesn't offer many extra options - there are only two, in fact - but the "recycle" icon in the bottom right corner of the left-hand panel does offer a really easy way of clearing off your virtual workspace.

Personal taste

Little Alchemy is really just that - combine the elements and see what you get. This is surprisingly addictive, but there's always the chance that it just doesn't appeal. Given that Little Alchemy is free, though, there's no harm if you give it a try. There are a lot of different photo editors out there that let you manipulate your own digital images. Picaboo adds an additional service of allowing you to be able to purchase and have a hard copy of your creations sent to you.

Picaboo requires no programming or design knowledge. You just pick the type of project you'd like to make and follow the step by step instructions. With Picaboo, you can make calendars, collages, photo albums and other creative content by choosing photos you already have saved on your computer and uploading them into the program.

On top of its easy navigability and usability, Picaboo is also a gorgeous app. It's got some great backgrounds to display your photos on while you're arranging them. Conveniently enough, the backgrounds aren't in the least bit distracting either.

In addition to being able to make your own different types of photographic content, there's also a convenient feature called BookGenie you can choose if you're not feeling all that creative yourself. BookGenie will automatically pull photos from your computer and then creates a read-to-edit photo book for you.

Of course, the big downside (or perk, depending on how you're looking at it!) is that to receive hard copies of your creations, you'll have to shell out some money. Picaboo's ultimate service is photo printing. Of course, if you just want to share your creations on your computer with friends and family, that doesn't even cost you a dime.

At first glance, the user interface in Adobe Flash CS6 will seem very overwhelming for the newcomer, although the software comes with plenty of tutorials and guides to get you started. But for those already versed in Flash, the Adobe Flash UI is a dream thanks to its drag-and-drop elements and customizable workspaces which allow you to pre-define the layout of all the various toolbars, timelines and panels.

Professional image editors like Photoshop can cost a substantial amount of money. If you're a novice graphic designer, you might not be willing or able to pay full price for something that amounts to a hobby.

Good thing there's Sumo Paint Air. It's got lots of great editing tools to satisfy budding designers. Best of all, it's free.

Image editing

With Sumo Paint Air you can create your own images or modify an existing picture and tweak it to perfection. Sumo Paint Air offers adjustments like color, saturation and hue edits and the ability to change brightness and contrast. In addition, there are a lot of fun filters to alter the appearance of your images, from different pixelate effects to textures and different varieties of blur. There aren't as many filters as other paid programs offer, but it's still a good selection for a free program.

If you're a bit more advanced, Sumo Paint Air also offers support for layers. You'll be able to blend multiple images together just as easily as you could on a professional graphics editor.

Image creation

Sumo Paint Air can accommodate your own image creation as well, and provides more than a dozen different tools to do so like a clone brush, a magic wand, a selector tool, the ability to add text and flood fill, to name a few.

Sumo Paint Air is a really useful program for graphic designers on a budget.

CloudDeck is written on the Adobe Air platform so this app will work across systems. It's a good media streamer that lets you search SoundCloud's huge database of songs. As is the case with Soundcloud, the quality of songs uploaded by artists vary. If you're looking to stream songs by a particular mainstream artist, this app isn't for you. If instead you want to discover undiscovered artists and DJs remixing songs, then CloudDeck is great!

While the main function of CloudDeck is to serve you music, it adds social media integration with Facebook and Twitter. If you find an interesting song that you want to share, you can click the Facebook or Twitter icon at the top of the application to share it with your friends or followers. You can also find and follow artists within CloudDeck. Following an artist will automatically deliver their new tracks to your feed.

Users can also use CloudDeck's search feature to find new music. There's options to search by artist, user, or group. Searching by group is interesting as it allows you to find groups of people who have similar tastes in music as you.

In use, we found CloudDeck to be a bit unstable and searching was more of a miss than a hit. A few of our searches returned no results and for some searches that did yield results, they weren't very relevant. Also disappointing is inability to upload your own tracks directly from the application, although you can download tracks from other artists if they allow it, but it will open up a browser to get the link.

Overall, CloudDeck has some great ideas to make Soundcloud more social, but its developers need to work on stability and usability.

If you've always wanted to annotate or hyperlink your videos like you can on YouTube but for your Facebook videos, ClickBerry for Facebook [PC] is the perfect app for you. Clickberry for Facebook allows you to do all of that, as well as integrating an e-commerce link and putting photos in a sidebar.

ClickBerry for Facebook has a super simple interface with big buttons that makes it easy to use. Everything is a drag and drop affair. There's no learning curve to this app, but a helpful intro video is included just the same. We only wish ClickBerry for Facebook included more editing features.

We found ClickBerry for Facebook to do exactly what it was advertized to do but we had problems uploading our finished project to Facebook because of an error. We hope that this had something to do with our particular video file.

Overall, ClicckBerry for Facebook provides a good way to make your Facebook videos interactive, but it doesn't work as an all-encompassing video editing solution.

Specifically designed for non-professionals such as small businesses, educators and general consumers, Adobe Rome is marketed as an easy-to-use alternative to other content creation programs. While users might initially experience a bit of difficulty learning the ropes of Adobe Rome, that's really about all they'll have to overcome before they can jump head in to the creation process of whatever project they've set their sights on.

If you're a designer who gets stuck for ideas or just someone looking for color themes for their home or wherever, having color palettes to hand can be really useful. Based on Adobe AIR, kuler desktop is a neat widget that lets you browse new and popular color themes from Adobe's kuler site.

The kuler desktop interface is really attractive, and you can 'tear off' any theme you like and drag it around your desktop to wherever you need it. If you use any of Adobe's Creative Suite (3 and above) programs like Photoshop, you can import any theme directly into your work.

The only problem with kuler desktop is it sometimes struggles to connect to its API. It's annoying having to restart the app because it's not refreshing images. However, most of the time it's fine and can be really useful.

Based on Adobe Air, AccuWeather.com Stratus is a neat looking transparent widget that floats on your desktop wherever you drag it. Clicking the calendar button opens a simple five day forecast, which can be toggled between night and day, Fahrenheit and Celsius.

Settings allows you to choose a location, although AccuWeather.com Stratus only allows you to have one at a time. A saved list of locations would be nice. You can also choose between white and black text, depending on what's easier to read over your background.

AccuWeather.com Stratus is a simple but effective weather widget for your desktop.

Unlike most clients, Mixero has a genuinely unique interface. This means to begin with users will feel a bit lost, but there is a method behind the design. The central panel features the accounts you add to Mixero, which can include Facebook as well as Twitter. Thes can be viewed on the left or right panels.

You can also set up channels to focus on specifying things in either service. These could be Twitter searches, user groups or specific friends, for example. These channels also sit in the central channel, and can be viewed quickly in either left or right panel. The idea behind this is that you can set up filters or channels, which will give you the information you want and cut out all the background noise that pollutes social media.

Mixero is made in Adobe Air, which means it looks good and is cross platform, but a tiny bit heavier on resources than it should be. The feed management is really well done, and it's great that they are trying something different, however only heavy twitter users are likely to need this degree of control.

Mixero is impressive as it does something different. However, it's claim of cutting out the noise is contrasted somewhat with an interface that can get very busy at times! One for Twitter addicts.
