Getting a video out has always been one of the best ways to while away an evening at home. However, these days few people choose to trudge down to the video store, preferring to download a movie, or plunder the near-infinite archives on popular video sharing sites such as YouTube and Google Video. Until recently it's been impossible to obtain movies from these sites without having to stream them online. However, Vdownloader is one of a number of programs changing that, allowing you to download these videos to your computer in AVI or MPEG format.

Essentially what this means is that you don't need to wait an age for popular videos to start streaming and can keep your favourites on your hard drive to watch at any time. This application does the job as simply as you could wish for. The executable makes a very small footprint and although the interface is very barren, it makes it easy to grab videos from YouTube, Google Video, Grinvi or DailyMotion very quickly. Basically all you need to do is copy and paste the link to the video into the box provided and hit ‘download'. Alternatively, you can browse the sites themselves by selecting the portal of your choice from the drop-down menu.

In one sense, the sparseness of the interface is an advantage, as it keeps things as clean and simple as possible. In another respect we were left wanting for extra features and options to help us peruse and download the videos we want. Practically the only setting you can tweak is the via the format dialog, allowing you to specify the format of the saved video (AVI or MPEG), the size of the video and the audio bitrate. We feel that the addition of a built-in video search tool or some video compression utilities would have lifted the program from being a good program to a great one.

Add to the fact that you can't download embedded movies like the ones you find on the front page of Google Video and you can't help feel frustrated that VDownloader doesn't do quite as much as it perhaps could. Having said this, the app is still in the early stages of development and the fact that it is so lightweight makes it prefect for those who want to grab video content with the minimum of fuss.

Download VDownloader 0.74 in Softonic

That's not forgetting files and music and anything else that your hard drive accumulates during the day as you click away. Most people have a browser integrated download manager but sometimes, its nice to have a separate application to do the job in case your browser crashes and your downloads disappear with it.

Orbit Downloader is a fast, lightweight and easy-to-use free download manager which is usually based on P2P and multi-source downloading technology. This means that downloading with Orbit Downloader is usually super fast. Orbit Downloader supports HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, MMS and RTSP protocols although its developers claim that it can increase speeds by up to 500% are a bit far fetched. However, you may experience increases in speed of up to two or even three times as much using Orbit Downloader depending on the file and host.

What's also impressive is that Orbit Downloader is super lightweight occupying a very minuscule amount of RAM which is important if you've got multiple downloads running at once. Orbit Downloader has also got a handy Flash capture tool which allows you to save Flash video files from YouTube and DailyMotion etc without the need to use a separate video downloader.

Fast, easy to use and very lightweight, Orbit Downloader is a competitive alternative to any browser-integrated download manager.

Download Orbit Downloader 2.7.6 in Softonic

Free FLV Converter lets you automatically access sites such as YouTube, DailyMotion, Google and Metacafé without opening anything else.

You can search by keyword and preview each video found in the rather basic interface and also download them in FLV format. After that, you can convert the files to AVI, IPod, IPhone, 3GP or PSP format. It also works vice versa and if the files in question are already in FLV format, it can convert to DivX, Xvid, MPEG, DVD and AVI with automatic HTML embed links. This means you can paste them into your website or blog to share instantly with the world. If you don't require these functions, the program interface still provides a convenient search platform because you can browse and watch videos at the same time. With just one click, you can download the video you are previewing. For ease of use, it allows you to create a download list of videos you want to save. Once it's complete, you can just leave the program to download the videos whilst you get on with something else although unfortunately, it still doesn't support batch downloading.

A very useful application for those who are not content with only having videos on the Internet but also want them on their hard drive but don't want to visit each video content site seperately.

Download Free FLV Converter 5.6 in Softonic

Simply surf to YouTube and Ares Tube will automatically prompt you to convert and import the file directly into iTunes.

YouTube Catcher allows you to do everything (i.e. the downloading and conversion) from within the same window. All you need to do is input the link to the video and select the format you want to convert to and YouTube Catcher does the business for you - at a very quick pace to boot.

Rather handily, the program can also be used as a standalone file converter, letting you take a FLV file and transform it into a different format using a similar process. The program also dishes up a bevy of useful options, such as the ability to define the quality and resolution of the video, audio channels, codecs used and more. All in all, YouTube Catcher is a brilliant tool for quickly grabbing cool movies from the popular site.

Download YouTube Catcher 1.0.252 in Softonic

That's exactly what Shiki Video Downloader attempts to do bringing together content from sites such as YouTube, DailyMotion, GoogleVideo and Metacafe. From the search results, you can then watch the videos directly on your desktop in the Shiki Player rather than, as the developers say, "a webpage full of annoying banners". However, it doesn't stop there. It also converts files into the format of your choice so for example, you can take your clips with you on the move. The number of formats you can convert to is rather limited but currently includes .mp4, .wmv, .avi, .mp3 and .aac. It also has special settings for those that want to convert content to work on iPod, Zune and iPhone.

The program interface looks very slick in black and it is nice just being able to search from such a huge amount of content. However, you'll find that search results are returned much slower than going directly to any of the video sites themselves.

Shiki Video Downloader is one hell of a package - search engine, video player and converter in one. Once the search speeds are improved, it will score much more highly.

Download Shiki Video Downloader 1.0.0.49 in Softonic

Video DownloadHelper installs in the Firefox toolbar to enable you to download in just a few clicks.

When it animates, clicking on the video icon downloads it directly. This simple extension downloads anything from YouTube videos, to MySpace, Google Video, DailyMotion, Porkolt, iFilm and more. You can select the folder you want to download videos where you will find them in FLV format. To make things even easier to keep track of, the files are added to the list of Firefox downloads like any other file. So you can see in a glance exactly what you've downloaded and how many videos you have in your collection. The only problem you might find is that sometimes, the downloads don't start immediately. It can take time depending on the streaming on the video site server but also, it seems that the program itself has to process the file before it starts downloading. The latest version has introduced some major innovations in the interface which make it much faster to use. One example is that FLV videos that you view are now remembered by the program so you can view your viewing history at any time and request the download of several videos in one batch or go directly to their original page. You have to enable this function via the system preferences and select 'enabled' in the 'History' tab. The developers have also reduced the number o duplicate entries that used to plague the previous version and there are fewer memory leaks so it's lighter on your RAM.

A useful FLV video downloading tool for Firefox users and the latest improvements have fixed many of the speed problems which hampered it before.

Download Video DownloadHelper 3.2 in Softonic

Have you ever wondered how to download videos from Youtube without having to go through the pain of searching the browser's cache or using a complicated third-party app?

The answer is Free Video Zilla, a download manager that monitors the browser in the background and lets you download any video that's embedded on any website you visit. It works with all the main browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Maxthon and Netscape, and even enables you to configure a custom browser.

Free Video Zilla works in a very simple way: just browse video websites like you would normally do and the program will automatically grab all embedded videos and show them on its interface. Now you only have to click on those you want to download, making sure you do it before the waiting list times out.

This easy process has two sides to it: on the one hand the program doesn't require any complicated configuration and downloads videos really fast; on the other hand, as Free Video Zilla monitors the browser, it grabs pretty much anything embedded on the website, and this can sometimes make it a bit difficult to distinguish the video you want to download from the rest of them. Plus, videos are saved only in FLV format so you'll need an FLV player to view them.

With Free Video Zilla you won't have to worry about configuring a third-party to download online videos; simply browse your favorite online video website and the program will take care of everything!

Download Free Video Zilla 1.1.2 in Softonic

However sometimes your favorite videos are removed and you lose them forever.

If you want to avoid this, the best option is using an online video downloader like TubeMaster. This easy tool works with the most popular video sharing sites such as Youtube, DailyMotion, Metacafe, MySpace and others, enabling you to download videos as you watch them. The program downloads videos in FLV, but features a built-in tool to convert them to other formats right on the spot.

TubeMaster doesn't require any installation and works great. One thing I didn't like though is the downloading process, which is a bit confusing. If you click on the "Media download and conversion" tab you'll see a list with the videos that the program has captured, but they won't be really saved to your computer unless you click on the Save button. This is obviously also a necessary step if you want to convert it to other formats. Conversion works fine, though it would have been nice to have a small progress bar instead of just a "Converting" sign that gives you no clue about how the conversion is going.

Despite some minor flaws, TubeMaster is a great tool with which you can browse, download and convert videos from the most popular video sharing sites.

Download TubeMaster 0.7.40 in Softonic

Miro 1.2.4

Make no mistake: the media industry has changed significantly in the last couple of years. Big corporations are now starting to consider the possibility that their traditional business models could well be about to crumble around them. Newspapers are facing the blogging threat, podcasting is the cool alternative to radio, and now the big TV stations must be starting to sweat a little following the dawn of free online video services such as YouTube, Joost and the one we're about to review: Miro.

After a few months in beta stage, Miro has reached version 1.0, which is considered as a new milestone in the production and development of video and TV content for the Web. Miro is defined by its developers as "the open-source Internet TV platform". In fact, it's been built by a non-profit organization called the Participatory Culture Foundation, which aims to bring together a community of broadcasters to create, what it calls, an 'Internet video ecosystem'. But besides all these elaborate definitions, Miro is simply a great application to watch online videos.

You could now be wondering what's the point of using Miro if you can get those same videos from other places? Well, Miro makes the process faster and much easier. The program uses open protocols to let you subscribe to video channels and video blogs that are fed in via RSS, and uses BitTorrent to download the files. You can also watch videos from Youtube and Dailymotion, or use it to subscribe to a Youtube channel you like, for example. The program supports video playlists and can resume playback just where you stopped.

The inclusion of the 'Channel Guide' is a welcome one, as it helps you get started with the program and also lets you search and browse the various channels effortlessly. Not only can you browse through the existing channel list, but you can easily add new channels simply by clicking a button to subscribe. There are more than two thousand channels available, and all of them are free. Beware, however, that the video quality may vary from one channel or video source to another.

Another great benefit of Miro is that it can handle a wide variety of video formats and, as a good open-source project, it ignores DRM and patents. These and other interesting features are used to compare Miro to Joost, but I think there's no reason for this comparison: they're just different applications with different purposes. In any case, Miro's first public release is an excellent example of how video content from different sources can be integrated into one single application and served directly to your PC in a fast, easy and elegant way.

Download Miro 1.2.4 in Softonic

Simply double-click on FLV files or drag and drop them into the window of FLV Player and you can enjoy flash videos offline at any time. The image quality is generally excellent compared to some FLV players although obviously much depends on what state it was in when you downloaded it originally. The program is particularly useful for travellers who don't have constant access to the internet but want to watch YouTube videos for playback later. It's also remarkably powerful supporting everything from videos downloaded on DailyMotion, YouTube and Google Video to those that embedded in blogs and websites. Although it's not often a major issue, note that Sothink FLV Player also does not require installation of the .NET framework to work. Although there are few controls available, you can stretch the screen to whatever size you want although with YouTube videos, this often means that the quality goes down.

Simply type a keyword in the search bar to instantly have access to YouTube, MySpace, Dailymotion, MSN Videos, CNN, CNBC and many more video databases.

Although you might get an extensive number of results, these are really not very well organised. They are not displayed as thumbnails, nor divided between content providers for example, the way you navigate through them is very slow indeed, as you can display just two videos at a time and you browse through them by pressing the 'next' buttonfound in the top of the frame. The first time you use the program, you don’t even notice how many videos there are available as the relative indicator is written in blue on a blue background. Then you see 'video 2 of 100' at the top-right part of you screen and you realize that thankfully there’s more for you to see.

It also supports downloading of all embedded objects on a webpage (movies, MP3s, Flash animations, QuickTime videos, etc.).

VideoDownloader adds a small non-intrusive icon to the right corner of the status bar, at the bottom of your Firefox window. All you need to do is click on that icon and download the video you are watching.

The extension works with more than 60 video sites, including Youtube, Google Video, iFilm, Metacafe, Dailymotion and a lot more.

Download Firefox VideoDownloader 1.1.1 in Softonic
