A few years ago these managers were a basic need for all download junkies. Internet connections were not as fast and reliable as they are now, so you needed a tool that could not only improve your speed but also allow you to pause, restart and resume downloads.

Unfortunately, the choice of programs seems to be based on a quantity, not quality policy. It does offer TV channels from all over the world although you will not have the best national broadcasters.

TV's design is really disappointing: the main page is stuffed with so many advertisements that using the application can be confusing; the list of channels is presented in a very inelegant way; the video is slow to start and the video player is different for every channel.

TV might be an interesting application if you want to watch 'not-so-common' TV programs from all over the world but you will have to put up with poor quality and design.

Music subscription service, Rdio, has released a dedicated desktop application that perfectly emulates its web interface. Manage your music library, create playlists, and explore new music. Rdio subscribers can also sync their music to their devices using the app. Lastly, all of the popular and recommended music charts are still available for perusal.

One of the great things about Rdio is its social network integration. It supports Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm. Social is really where Rdio separates itself from competitors like Spotify. You can follow people on Rdio and have their music activity show up in your feed. It is a great way to discover new music and to see what your friends have been listening to. You can even create a collaborative playlist with your friends.

One interesting feature of the Rdio desktop app and the Rdio web interface is that the desktop application can scan your iTunes collection so that your iTunes library will show up in Rdio's interface. Rdio still acts as a music streaming application, but you can also send tracks to be downloaded to your mobile device if you pay for the monthly plan.

There are still a few areas that Rdio could improve upon, like including more artists. Its library is not as extensive as Spotify's. It would also be nice to see a section for lyrics.

Overall, Rdio's desktop application retains all of the functionality of its web interface while providing a couple of improved features like iTunes matching.

The good thing about Ashampoo Burning Studio is that it offers a rich variety of tools to burn data, backup files, create movie and photo slideshows and print labels and covers, while maintaining great usability thanks to a well-organized menu. All you have to do is browse the menu on the left of the interface, select the appropriate task and Ashampoo Burning Studio will open the corresponding tool in a new window.

There are some outstanding new features in this version of Ashampoo Burning Studio. This has to be one of the most comprehensive programs I've ever laid eyes on. It's pretty much an entire entertainment solution ranging from gaming to a home entertainment centre. It features multiple emulators for gaming fans, music playlists, a fully functional Jukebox, Picture and Slide show viewer, Ebook and Comic Book reader, CD Player and CD Ripper with Automatic lookup of CD information and even a News Reader.

In addition, GameEx features a DVD Player with support for FFDSHOW which can also be controlled with a Gamepad, The Video module can also play DVR-MS using FFDSHOW (on Windows XP). Registered users can also use GameExtender which is like a networked LCD display for GameEx but for a real PC Display or TV, it can also be viewed through a web browser according to the developers.

For anyone that wants an all-in-one package, GameEx is certainly impressive although it packs a bit too much into one entertainment centre for my liking.

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a DJ, or you like to put together mixes you can share with your friends, then Pacemaker Editor can awaken the DJ inside you.

This simple to use music mixer allows you to record songs in the way you want them so if you don't like an intro or bassline, you can change it to make it exactly the way you want them. You view your song in a timeline like with a classical editor. You can drag and drop transitions such as fade in and fade out, add loops, reverb etc. The good thing is that any mixes that you create can also be transferred to other tracks and vice versa. The editing interface is extremely simple - it will be a bit too simple for some that are accustomed to multi track editors - but it's to make it accessible to everyone. When you've made your creation, simply upload it to the Pacemaker.net web community and let others decide exactly how good you are. At the moment, there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of users but this will surely change as it becomes more popular.
