Sudoku is by far one of the most popular games to play on a train or bus journey and as such, the format has been cloned millions of times for mobile device (maybe I'm exaggerating a bit).

This game, simply called Sudoku, is one of the most in-depth incarnations of the puzzler I've seen and gives you lots of freedom over how you play it. When you start you can choose to set up the game board yourself, placing numbers on the 9 x 9 grid simply by clicking on a square and selecting one from the pop-up keypad, or using the Palm handwriting pad. It's great because this means you can effectively set the difficulty level of the game manually (there's also an auto option if you can't be bothered to do it yourself).

Once you're happy with the layout you press 'Go' to start playing. One of the most innovative things about the gameplay is that you can choose whether or not you want to 'set' a number. So, if you're not sure if the number will work in a certain square but want to mark your intention to play it you can do so by unselecting the 'Set' option. The number is then displayed in minature and you can add multiple numbers to one square to play around with possibilities.

There's lots of ways to customise the Sudoku board to your tastes, although strangely you can't play around with grid sizes. The only other niggle I found was that the handwriting recognition is a little iffy.

On the whole though, this is an enjoyable Sudoku clone with plenty of options to keep you amused for a long time.

Download Sudoku 1.31 in Softonic

Astraware Sudoku 1.50

I don't know when or where it was invented, but somehow Sudoku has come from nowhere to become one of the most popular ways to while away a bus journey. What's more, you don't even need a puzzle book to play it because there are so many versions of the game available for mobile devices.

Astraware's take on the format is very impressive and is actually one of the most well-executed I've seen anywhere. Obviously the scenario is the same as always - you have a 9 x 9 grid with a series of nine boxes and nine cells. You need to fill up all the cells with the numbers one to nine without repeating a number in any row, column or box.

But what's great about this game is the loving attention that's been given to its presentation. When you first start out, you're given an animated introduction to Sudoku, explaining all the rules in a succinct manner. You can then choose to start a new puzzle from the default ones built into the game, create your own puzzle, or download one from the Astraware site (you'll need to register for the full version to do this).

There are six difficulty levels to choose from, ranging from 'Beginner' to 'Diabolical,' which lets you develop your skills at your own pace. The in-game options are just as impressive. You can add pencilmarks to assist you, get hints, change the display and set the level of assistance.

Graphically, the game is tastefully presented and the board is very clear. There's even a clock and a battery indicator at the top to remind you not to lose track of things in the real world!

All in all, one of the best mobile-based Sudoku games you'll find.

Download Astraware Sudoku 1.50 in Softonic

Bubble Babble 1.00

Now, normally I wouldn't recommend playing word games underwater because you'll get your puzzle book all soggy. However, with Bubble Babble you can have plenty of fun with words without getting wet.

The object of this brain-bending game is to create words from the letters floating around in the bubbles on screen. If you manage impress your friendly fish host, Wordsworth Smartygills you'll score points and progress through to the next level.

Before you start playing Bubble Babble it's worth having a look at the excellent (if slightly long-winded) animated tutorial, where Wordsworth demonstrates how to play and you get the chance to pull off a few moves. Joining the bubbles together is done simply by dragging them next to each other using the stylus. It seems like a simple control system at first but sometimes the game doesn't seem to detect when two bubbles are touching and you have to keep trying, which soon becomes annoying.

There are four different game modes to try, each presenting a different kind of puzzle. There's Challenge, where you need to make a certain number of words within a given time; target, in which you must put the separated words back together; Mystery, where you're asked to find the hidden word; and Freeplay, which lets you make words to your heart's content.

I was impressed by Bubble Babble's overall presentation. The graphics and sound are fun and capture the aquatic theme very well. There are plenty of options to tinker around with, and a great Stats feature, which lets you view all manner of details about your performance.

It can get a little repetitive after a while, but if you're a fan of word puzzles Bubble Babble provides a more entertaining way to play than a puzzle book can.

Download Bubble Babble 1.00 in Softonic

Life Balance is award winning coaching software that provides a dynamically ordered To Do List driven by the importance of your goals, your desired allocation of time and effort, and feedback from what you get done each day.

Life Balance is a time and task management program that helps you focus on what's really important to you and actively balance the often conflicting demands of career and personal life. Life Balance emphasizes the intrinsic importance that you've assigned to your projects and life goals, rather than arbitrarily filling every slot in your calendar. This helps you to spend your time and energy on what matters to you the most. You can be self-directed, and know that you are working toward long term goals while still managing your day to day routine.

Some of the features that set Life Balance apart from most to-do list software are:

A built-in outliner so that you can organize your tasks into projects

The ability to reprioritize all the tasks in a project by dragging a single slider

An unlimited number of places (categories) that you can use to filter your to-do list

Dependencies, so that Step B won't appear on your list until Step A is finished

Routine tasks, like laundry, can be scheduled to happen with a flexible interval rather than scheduling for a particular day and time

Lead times to gently bring your attention to approaching deadlines

Integration with the schedule in your Palm's built-in Date Book

Pie charts that provide feedback on how you are spending your time

Unique "balance" feature nudges your to do list to help to bring your actual time and effort allocation more in line with your desires

An active and knowledgeable User Community available in the User Forum to help answer questions and discuss how to get the most out of Life Balance software

Life Balance helps you to set priorities and increase personal productivity in a very new way. Items on a to-do list can have a high priority for different reasons: because they are part of an important project, because the deadline is near-at-hand, because you are in the right place to take action, or because you have been neglecting the task.

Internally, Life Balance uses fuzzy logic math techniques to balance all these competing factors. As a result, it can provide you with an easy to use, sorted list that makes it simple to figure out what is the most important thing that you can do right here, right now.

Ultimately, Life Balance is software designed to help you achieve that feeling that you are living authentically and following your own unique path.

Download Life Balance 3.5 in Softonic

In my experience though stuff like insurance, maintenance and registration details tend to get scattered around the house or the garage and you can never find this information when you need it. Wouldn't it be great if you could centralize all of the important info about your car and have it close to hand at all times. Well, now you can, thanks to Vehicle Manager for Palm.

The application is designed to help you record all manner of details about your vehicle on your handheld device. It's split into four different categories, represented by tabs at the top of the interface, namely: Details, Insurance, Dealer and Notes. The way this is presented makes it incredibly easy to both view and enter information.

However, the real beauty of the app is the sheer amount of data it can record, including the name of the car, vehicle ID number, insurance policy number along with coverage and renewal date info, repair and maintenance history, and much, much more. You can even use it to track your fuel consumption history. Vehicle Manager could also be very useful for car dealers, as it allows you to record and manage details about multiple vehicles.

This really is a comprehensive digital log book for your car and it covers pretty much every piece of information you'll need in an easy-to-handle manner. It would've been nice to see an option to insert pictures of the car, but I can forgive the developer for that.

If you have a car and a Palm, this is an essential download.

Download Vehicle Manager 3.5.106 in Softonic

Excited? It's a controversial application because it allows you to monitor the activity of any other Treo - that means read text messages, search contacts, modify passwords, check battery and lock the phone. So if you've lost your PDA or you don't want to carry two phones it's extremely useful. And if you want to spy on family and friends it's equally good, and possibly illegal in your country.

Install SMS Commander on the mobile you want to control and send a text from another phone with the activation password and first order. Be careful, failure to follow the installation instructions could lead to improper operations of the application. There is also a free Radio ON/OFF application when you register SMS Commander. The default password is 00000. We recommend you change this immediately. Spies need uncrackable codes. Maybe try your birthday.

Download SMS Commander 1.08 Beta in Softonic

Treobble is the latest in a growing number of programs designed to replicate the iPhone's intertia contact scrolling feature, this time for Treo devices, allowing you to peruse your address book simply by touching and sliding your finger up and down the screen.

It would be unfair to say that's all that it does though, because there are plenty of other features that help you enhance your contacts book.

For instance, you can view all data from a particular contact, initiate a call, send an SMS message or an email, all without having to use the pointer.

The scrolling feature works surprisingly well unless you have lots of contacts, in which case it can get quite jerky. Of course, it's virtually impossible to store this much data in one head, so it's a good idea to install some kind of password management program.

If you're a Mac user then you're in luck, because there's a rather wonderful app for OS X called 1Passwd , which keeps a record of all your secret numbers for you. What's more, if you have a Palm or Treo, you can now use your handheld to transport this information around with you wherever you go.

1Passwd Reader syncs to your Mac version of 1Passwd pretty easily, though it is a little long-winded to begin with. You will need to download the Palm Desktop for Macintosh utility first and install it. Then you'll need to launch HotSync and click the 'Install Handheld Files' menu item to install and sync the application.

Once it's all set up though, the program works very well, seamlessly transmitting all your password info from your Mac to your Palm memory or expansion card. From here you can browse all your passwords using your key chain access code.

If you're a Mac user who has lots of passwords then 1Password Reader offers a great way of carrying this information wherever you go.

Download 1Passwd Reader for Palm 1.1 in Softonic

Check Em All! 1.3

Check Em All is a very simple and no-nonsense application that is definitely going to be useful if you happen to have many numbered checklists to manage. Instead of messing around with Memos, or creating dozens of tasks, or purchasing an application that still doesn't have the numbers pre-entered, you could easily manage your works with preset numbers up to 100 for multiple databases.

For example, you need to revise Chemistry before your term exam, and you have around 20 lessons. You choose to revise them in a random order. With Check Em All! you can enter the total number of lessons in the uppermost field, and then you can check next to the lesson numbers you've finished revising without the hassle of searching for scraps of paper or folding the book's edges as signs. So this is 2-in-1; you remind yourself of the total number of items and the certain numbers of items done.

Another example; you decided to watch a bunch of Family Guy episodes on several DVDs. You can check next to the corresponding numbers so that you don't forget which episodes you've already watched. The choices are endless...

Download Check Em All! 1.3 in Softonic

You can add an arbitrary number of items, assign a description, a value and the category (earnings/spending). The list is written to database and displayed in numerical order - income first, spending second.

You can edit an entry by tapping on it. When more items are entered than the list can hold, you can scroll the list with the appearing arrow buttons or the keys on your device. To keep your list private, you can set a password.

Download Housekeeping Book 1.31 in Softonic
