Little Sailor 3.0

Sailing is one of the few sports that hasn't produced scores of 'virtual' versions, so Little Sailor makes for a welcome change.

Little Sailor is a sailing, surfing, and motorboat simulation for Palm devices. The object of the game is to navigate a series of courses against other, AI-controlled, boats. The winner is the boat who passes through all of the gates, in the correct order, in the fastest time. Be careful, because time penalties will be issued if you crash into anything.

Playing Little Sailor is far from easy, especially if you've never sailed before, and there are a number of factors you need to take into account in order to maintain a steady ship. You are in control of the rudder via the hardware cursors or the menu icon, but must also raise or lower the mast, trim the sail, and adjust the throttle. All the while you should be thinking about the direction of the wind and the force of the current. This can make Little Sailor somewhat tricky to start off with, and it takes a while to figure everything out.

Although the graphics are less than impressive, there is plenty of enjoyment to be had from Little Sailor once you get going - I would even say it becomes quite a calming experience. There are lots of different tracks to race on and you can even create your own. Plus, Little Sailor can be customized by tweaking the display, control buttons, speed and distance units, and much more.

If you fancy a different kind of sports sim, Little Sailor offers a strangely captivating alternative to all the pool, soccer, and golf games out there.

Download Little Sailor 3.0 in Softonic

Two-Inch Town 1.9

If you're a fan of The Sims then you may enjoy playing Two-Inch Town on your Palm.

Actually, comparing Two-Inch Town to The Sims is like saying if you like caviar you'll like fish fingers. Nevertheless, it's one of the few town-building/people management games available on the Palm platform and there is fun to be had.

Your objective in Two-Inch Town is to take care of the community, making sure all the little people that live there are happy, not hungry and have plenty to do. You do this by building them houses, cafes, libraries, lodges, grass, etc. Once you've done your construction work you sit back and watch the little people running around performing activities. The 'Person List' allows you to check on all your residents, finding out what they're doing at the moment, and having a look at stats such as hunger, fatigue, boredom, isloation, etc. Each character also has the ability to build different skills such as physics, writing and history, much like in The Sims.

Two-Inch Town is good fun to play and there's a surprisingly large amount of stuff you can do. Unfortunately this demo version is limited to one map and one character, but the full version offers a whole host of possibilities.

Of course, Two-Inch Town is nowhere near The Sims in terms of presentation or depth of gameplay. The characters are just pixelated sprites that move jerkily around town, the maps are small, and there aren't many different types of building to choose from, so it can get quite repetitive.

But if you're a big fan of the 'reality game' genre, it's worth at least paying a visit to Two-Inch Town.

Download Two-Inch Town 1.9 in Softonic

Excited? It's a controversial application because it allows you to monitor the activity of any other Treo - that means read text messages, search contacts, modify passwords, check battery and lock the phone. So if you've lost your PDA or you don't want to carry two phones it's extremely useful. And if you want to spy on family and friends it's equally good, and possibly illegal in your country.

Install SMS Commander on the mobile you want to control and send a text from another phone with the activation password and first order. Be careful, failure to follow the installation instructions could lead to improper operations of the application. There is also a free Radio ON/OFF application when you register SMS Commander. The default password is 00000. We recommend you change this immediately. Spies need uncrackable codes. Maybe try your birthday.

Download SMS Commander 1.08 Beta in Softonic

This is an accomplished gambling sim that manages to capture the thrill of the real thing through a series of no-risk parlour games.

The games on offer here are Craps, Roulette, Video Poker, Caribbean Poker, Blackjack, and Slots. Some of these are divided into separate games that you can choose from.

For example, in the Video Poker mode you can choose between six variations on the card game. Don't worry if you don't know the rules because everything is explained in great detail in the various Help sections.

The presentation of Jackpot Casino is impeccable. From the green and yellow baizes to the realistic animation of the roulette wheel, you really get the sense that you're inside a casino, even when, in reality, you're sat on a bus on the way to work.

It's easy to lose yourself in this game, such is the addictive nature of the games, and the only thing that disappointed me was the lack of multiplayer action.

Download Jackpot Casino 1.0 in Softonic

I don't mean like in the Sims or Second Life, but in terms of the reproduction and distribution of neurons.

Well, that's what Brian's Brain does, or at least what it purports to do, because after using the program for 30 times or so I still don't really have a clue what I'm doing.

The basic premise is that it's supposed to generate random distributions of artificial neurons on a grid. Depending on how these neurons are distributed, they can either multiply generation after generation or die out completely.

It sounds kinda cool, and if you have a scientific mind I'm sure it is, but personally I couldn't really work out what was happening. Perhaps if the developer had chosen to include some kind of help or instructions I would've got more out of it.

Ultimately though, the process of marking little colored blocks on a grid without any visible changes isn't something that's going to keep me gripped for any length of time.

There's also a bug where if you click on the menu arrow, a countdown starts and you can't do anything else in the program.
If you have the patience and brain-power to persist with it, I'm sure Brian's Brain is interesting, but for me, I found it confusing and boring.

Download Brian's Brain 1.0.7 in Softonic

Village Sim 1.1

For many, the demise of the Tamagotchi fad came not a moment too soon. Those tiny electronic pets which held such sway over their owners’ lives were almost like real living creatures – albeit without any of the food, waste or actual life. Given that the popularity of these high-maintenance critters has faded so much over recent years, it may be surprising to find that one of the best games available for Palm OS handhelds makes much use of Tamagotchi’s always-on, micro-management style of play. Village Sim combines these elements with a Civilization-style strategy format to produce an original, enjoyable game which makes the player feel like this is what Palms were invented for.

Taking a remote tropical island as its backdrop, Village Sim tells the story of a tribe of villagers determined to rebuild their lives after being forced to flee their homeland. Starting off without any skills or sense, your role is to guide these villagers through a series of learning processes so that they can achieve higher levels of technology and comfort. As they learn, they also explore their new island which is replete with mysterious nooks and crannies, with something new and interesting around every corner.

The learning process is slow and must be controlled by the player. For example, to encourage a villager to become a doctor, you need to pick the villager up (a snap using the easy stylus interface) and drop her by a mysterious medical plant. Your villager will normally fail to see what they’re meant to do but after some time, they start to get the idea and begin researching the role you’ve given them. Other jobs on the island include builders, foragers and the all-important scientists. These characters gradually garner more and more research points, eventually enabling you to progress to the next level of technological advancement.

Your villagers will develop pretty slowly. This is where the Tamagotchi-style gameplay comes in. Even when you switch off your Palm PDA, your villagers live on, learning and eating so that when you next start the game up, they will have progressed. When you start out though, you’ll need to check up on them fairly regularly because they still lack the capability of looking after themselves.

The game features attractive, simple graphics in two main view modes, ‘map’ and ‘zoom ‘. These modes allow you to focus on one villager and their tasks or take a more macro approach, watching your charges as they interact, learn and… have babies. Yes, your responsibilities go further than merely encouraging your villagers to gain new skills. Or rather, one of the new skills that you’re expected to encourage them in is ‘breeding’. Everything’s done very tastefully though, so there’s no reason that this should upset anyone. Indeed, for many, this will be a pleasant shift from the more war-like habits of characters in similar games.

Village Sim has managed to strike the perfect balance between ease-of-use, longevity, fun and humour, making it a truly excellent little game. The only tiny gripe we had with the game was that its sound effects become pretty repetitive after a while – but this is normal in games of this type. Otherwise, the game is highly recommended!

Download Village Sim 1.1 in Softonic

It realistically simulates the critical phase of an Apollo moon mission which is the landing. During the descent to the moon, you may also have to cope with system malfunctions while you are busy flying the LEM!

Some of those failures are recoverable. One example is a leak in the fuel tank. This will of course reduce the amount of fuel available for landing requiring you to land quickly. Other failures may be fatal. For instance, if the main descent engine shuts down for too long then NASA may as well name a new crater after you!

Download LEM Sim 2.0 in Softonic

These days you don't even need to venture down to your local pool hall to enjoy the sport.

Virtual Pool Mobile is one of the longest-standing pool sims for mobile devices, and it's now available on a wide range of platforms. It offers a pretty accurate simulation of the real thing, with smart graphics, realistic ball physics and lifelike sound effects.

There are plenty of game modes and options to keep you occupied in Virtual Pool Mobile, with a choice of 6-ball or 9-ball games. In the career mode you need to hustle your way up from the ranks of a rookie to become a champ. In order to do this you need to win money by winning games, then use this money to enter matches with players of escalating abilities across a range of diverse settings.

The controls in this Palm version of Virtual Pool Mobile can take a while to get used to. It's all based around the use of the stylus and it'll take you a bit of time to get used to the sensitivity of the device. Once you do figure it out it starts to feel like quite a natural way of playing.

Virtual Pool Mobile is great fun to play, although I found it got a bit too repetitive after a while. This is probably due to the fact there's no multiplayer mode and taking on the same computer opponents all the time gets a bit boring. I also found the annoying music a bit of a turn-off.

That said, Virtual Pool Mobile definitely offers one of the most realistic handheld pool experiences you'll find.

Download Virtual Pool Mobile 1.48 in Softonic
