SpywareBlaster takes the approach that prevention is the best way to deal with Spyware attacks and in the main, it accomplishes this aim.

Most importantly, this program is completely free, simple to setup and and very straight-forward to use. It works by preventing the installation of adware and spyware by blocking them at source. In this way, you prevent attacks rather than having to scan for installed diallers, trojans and bots later with something like Ad-Aware. Of course, this is no easy task. One annoying aspect used to be that there was no auto update function but this has thankfully been solved in this latest version. Via these updates, the program is constantly updated with a blacklist of potential threats that the program monitors for. However, you do get the slight impression that nothing much is going on when it's installed. It doesn't seem to issue any update messages or warnings although it seems to be doing it's job properly. As a result, for many people, this program may seem a bit too flimsy to trust 100% but if run alongside something like Ad-Aware as a backup tool, you don't have much to lose by trying it.

A valient effort although I still wouldn't change it for the trio of Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and Spyware Terminator.

Download SpywareBlaster 5.0 in Softonic

Xmarks 4.0 for Firefox

Xmarks, previously Foxmarks, is an extension for <taglink type="program" country="en" id="107191">Firefox</taglink> that syncs your bookmarks and other data anywhere you have it installed. It’s perfect for all those of us who work on two or more computers.

You have to be signed in to Xmarks to access your bookmarks, so it is secure. The user account can be easily created in a step-by-step configuration wizard when launching the program for the first time. Xmarks also adds an icon to your URL bar, which gives you a drop-down frame of information about the site your on, and a list of similar sites.

As Xmarks is cross platform, you can sync between different operating systems, or wherever Firefox runs – quite handy if, like me, you use Windows at work and OSX at home. Synchronizing takes a couple of seconds, and can be automated at browser shutdown if you wish.

Besides bookmarks, Xmarks can also sync open tabs and browser history, and it lets you configure and use different syncing profiles. Alternatively, you can setup Xmarks to run through your own server, meaning you data will not be uploaded to theirs.

The synchronizing feature is great on Xmarks, and is very smooth. The additional search features are nice too - having related sites a click away is a great way to discover more on the web. On the downside, Xmarks no longer syncs passwords, which means you’ll need to use a separate app for that – Xmarks suggests <taglink type="program" country="en" id="73590">LastPass</taglink>.

Xmarks is a great synchronizing tool with which you can keep your bookmarks, tabs and browser history updated across computers.

Download Xmarks 4.0 for Firefox in Softonic

On average it takes a non-technical user one hour using RunYourAppsFromUSB to convert an Application(not. NET) which is installed on a PC, into a Portable Application installed on a USB Device, which can be plugged in and run on any Windows PC.

(with no extra SW required on that PC, subject to the license terms of the Application) Unlike other systems it is a complete system and does not require the purchase, installation and maintenance of expensive and complex Installer SW , Server environments or Virtual Machines before it can be used.

It is designed to be easy to use, (and NOT require detailed knowledge of PCs beyond what was necessary to install the Apps on the PC). The default options are suitable for the majority of Apps and where required there is the option using an Advanced mode to display and revise the settings.

It provides four methods (which can be used together) of defining and setting up the APPLICATIONs environment on the USB device. Monitoring the running of the App, Reading the details in the Apps Installation MSI, Capturing changes on installation, Adding complete Directories and Registry Keys Once setup the Applications on the USB Device are run using a Start menu which can be automatically displayed when the Device is plugged in, so it can be used by any (non technical) PC User.

As an Application is installed on the USB using Generic names it should be possible to plug in and run the Apps unchanged on Windows 7, XP, and Vista PCs (of different languages?

). A Worked example of setting up a USB with Open Office, Adobe Acrobat 7, 7-Zip, Pegasus Mail, MSD Organiser, Photobie, Firefox Portableversion is documented.

It took less than a morning to setup using the Applications already installed on the PC. For Licensing reasons it is recommended that where ever possible the Applications are Freeware.

Download RunYourAppsFromUSB 3.0.895 in Softonic

The program simply installs an icon in your task bar and claims to download iTunes music and videos up to 10 times quicker. In reality, you might find it's less than half of this although it depends on your broadband setup.

It includes speeded-up connections to shared bookstores, Podcast subscriptions and probably the most useful feature - radio streams. In fact, this was the best feature by far in that radio streams seem to be much more reliable and quicker with SppedyiTunes. The problem is however is that you never know whether it is genuinely speeding up the connections or its your own connection that fluctuating (known as bandwidth flapping.

However, if you are not satisfied with the speed of iTunes, SpeedyiTunes could be the solution you've been looking for - or at least - make your connections to the radio more stable.

Download SpeedyiTunes 2.6.0.88 in Softonic

GPhotospace 1.0

Do you find Flickr and Photobucket a pain? Want to store your photos online securely and privately? GPhotospace could be the add-on for you.

GPhotospace is a free Firefox add-on currently only for Windows that uses a Gmail account as space for you to store and, if you wish, share your photos with your friends (and enemies if you have their email addresses).

Installation is easy, and once you've enabled the GPhotospace add-on and restarted Firefox, you are taken on a short guide on how to use the application. Uploading photos is pretty fast compared to Flickr etc, and albums are stored neatly in a Gmail style page in the browser. You have to have a Gmail account and you can open one during the add-on setup process.

Photos have to be in .png or .jpg format, though that's fairly standard and shouldn't cause anyone huge problems. You can share your photos and albums by selecting what you want, and then clicking the share button. The albums are then shared with any email addresses you enter, although it doesn't appear to be linked to your Gmail address book, which is a shame.

At the moment there are no options to link your photos to any of the social networking sites, but the developers seem to be stressing GPhotospace as a more private system. Nevertheless, it would be a good option for future versions.

GPhotospace is a neat little add-on which gives you a large amount of storage space for your photos, while keeping total control over who can see them.

Download GPhotospace 1.0 in Softonic

However, did you know that you can enjoy all the benefits of a Linux environment without installing it courtesy of Ulteo? Ulteo is a virtual desktop that allows you to run Linux applications in a Windows environment. You’ll have to sign-up for an Ulteo account to synchronise data stored on your hard drive with Ulteo but once done, it’s a surprisingly powerful and useful way to run Linux without installing it. Ulteo comes preinstalled with all the major tools you need to work and surf the internet and is intended as a replacement for Windows. Amongst the packages you receive are Firefox, OpenOffice (that can now work with MS Office 2007 and 2008 documents), KPdf to deal with your PDF documents, Kopete (a cross-client instant messenger), Skype, Thunderbird, Enigmail, Gimp and Digikam to manage your pictures and Inkscape and Scribus to create great graphics and DTP projects. It’s a genuinely exciting package filled with open source applications that are easy to use and won’t bug you with ads or registration requests.

For anyone that divides their time regularly between Linux and Windows, this tool will speed up your productivity significantly.

Download Ulteo Virtual Desktop 20080514 Beta in Softonic

And this improvement comes in the shape of an add-on that allows you to follow the latest headlines of your preferred blogs and websites.

SRR, which stands for Simple RSS Reader, displays the titles of the latest posts published on your favourite RSS feeds on a new toolbar that sits under the navigation one. This toolbar also includes some controls to browse through new posts and jump from one feed to another. Whenever you want to read more about a given headline, simply click on it and the full post will open up in a new tab.

I personally found this RSS reader to be better than Mozilla Live Bookmarks, but on the downside, I missed the ability to add feeds automatically (searching for the appropriate link on a given webpage or importing the OPML file) instead of having to fill in the information manually. Also, as you read headlines on a toolbar, space is quite limited and you have no preview of what's coming next.

Simple RSS Reader completely integrates RSS headlines into Firefox.

Download Simple RSS Reader 1.1.2.1 in Softonic
