Fast, reliable and easy to use - CCleaner it's one of the best cleaning systems out there.

For me, the beauty of CCleaner is the speed at which it carries out the various scans and fixes. Its main purpose is to clean any unnecessary files from your hard-drive and on opening the program you see the various aspects of Windows that you can search through and clear. CCleaner will also detect your installed applications that may hold on to files which are no longer any use, such as Google Earth histories or Flash Player configurations.

The interface in CCleaner is very easy to navigate and before taking any action, you will always be asked to confirm that you are sure about what you want to do. There is a useful registry checker that will quickly check its integrity, and let you fix bad entries after making a backup. CCleaner uninstall and startup tools are handy to have and simply add to the usability of this very rounded little maintenance assistant.

The most recent release of CCleaner now works on Vista with Admin permissions where available and features various bug fixes and improvements to the translated versions.

CCleaner makes keeping your PC clean easy for beginners and experts alike. It's small, fast, comprehensive, and free to download it - get cleaning now!

Download CCleaner 2.11.636 in Softonic

Azureus (Vuze) 3 1.1.0

With the release of Vuze, Azureus is jumping onto the legal torrent bandwagon. This application features the classic and extensive Azureus torrent client and adds to it an online platform from which you can download and submit legal audio and video content.

Vuze’s interface is a complete shake-up to what Azureus users are used to. The bittorrent developer has decided to focus on online multimedia content and introduce user participation. The first thing the user sees is a list of thumbnails of the latest videos uploaded to Vuze. You can browse these files by using the left side menu, divided in time, main channels and tags. The menu at the top also links to hot and new content. Vuze takes the web 2.0 road and you’ll see that most of the files have tags. You can write out a comment and leave a rating. The program also makes it a no brainer to send a video by email and link to content directly from your blog or website. There’s also a little diggit tag for each file, to submit them to the ultra famous social news site. It’s still a shame that Azureus omitted all the other famous social networking sites like del.icio.us or reddit. Maybe in a few months?

If you’re only interested in using Vuze as a torrent client, click the “Advanced tab” and you will be taken to the original Azureus interface. You can open up the gazillion configuration options that have come to define this as the most exhaustive bittorrent client on the planet. There’s even access to extra plug-ins like 3D view, RSS feed scanner or share exporter.

We won’t expand on the qualities of the Azureus client, for which you can read a review here. Vuze tries to innovate by adding social tools to the program and providing legal content. There’s up to nine channels to choose from, be it Tony Hawk’s Boom Boom Sabotage the Film School or Travel, yet we were disappointed with the content in general. On some channels there’s very little to watch and on others you don’t necessarily find what you were hoping for. The trailers channel for example, offers new video games trailers instead of releases of movies. However, with Azureus striking up a partnership with the BBC, you’ll soon get Dr Who, The League of Gentleman and Invasion Earth and surely other content providers will flock to Vuze. Taking this into account, Vuze also includes a special tag to let you know if a file is High Definition or not.

On the downside Vuze does nothing to atone the principal drawback to Azureus: the over extensive use of PC memory. Yes, Vuze is still a bandwidth hog, and there’s nothing to do about it. We also find the new interface to be incredibly cluttered. The old downloads and currently downloading windows are too similar to have to be separated and we don’t understand why Vuze includes a Library tab when you can access content straight from the Home tab.

While the whole interface felt a bit clunky, and the number of legal content is still limited, Vuze is a promising application for sharing and enjoying legal content. If you’re already hooked on the original Azureus bittorrent client, take a leap into the future with Vuze.

Download Azureus (Vuze) 3 1.1.0 in Softonic

The application lets you zoom in on any part of the world and for some places, observe from a few meters away.

Google Earth not only displaces satellite images but it also includes terrains and sometimes 3D reconstruction of buildings. You can look for directions and businesses, just like in Google Maps and pinpoint areas or draw on maps straight in Google Earth.

Google Earth includes a very wide, and constantly increasing library of layers, which you can add to the map to enrich your experience. You'll find all sorts of information, from historical landscapes to national parks, regions where you can find endangered species or tourist spots. Google Earth will also showcase more news related information such as forest fires or tsunamis.

If stars is what you are into, turn to the Space mode and navigate among the constellations.

Moving around in Google Earth is incredibly intuitive thanks to the multiple navigation tools. Some areas will show less information than others, and Google Earth is known to use up a substantial amount of bandwidth, but it remains a fascinating piece of software

Google Earth is as of yet an unequalled application. Browse around the world, zoom into streets or go up and gaze at the stars. Millions of possibilities.

Download Google Earth 4.3 Beta in Softonic

Tabula Rasa Trial

The story behind Tabula Rasa is certainly not original: alien race invades Earth; Earth is in danger; you're the only one who can save Earth from ultimate disaster.

Leaving simple plots aside, the truth is that Tabula Rasa is a must-have for RPG lovers. It's role-playing at its finest, a state-of-the-art adventure with a huge universe to explore and of course, lots of action. Because RPG is not only about learning professions and casting spells!

Tabula Rasa is set in a somewhat catastrophic future, right in the middle of a war between humans and the invading alien race, the Bane. As part of the human army, you'll have to fight against all sorts of alien creatures and step by step, regain control of your dear old planet.

Like in any other RPG game, Tabula Rasa is heavily based on quests: missions in which you're given a certain objective and for which you're properly rewarded. As you progress through missions and kill enemies, your character will earn experience points and go up levels.

The good thing about Tabula Rasa is that in spite of being an RPG game – which could make you think it's all about rolling dice – it has loads of action, battles, very realistic explosions and a wide array of weapons to choose from.

Another thing I especially liked about Tabula Rasa is the fact that it runs quite smoothly, despite its high system requirements. Tabula Rasa uses the standard RPG keyboard combination (WASD) plus mouse, so that you'll get used to it in a couple of minutes, and the game's graphics are simply gorgeous.

Tabula Rasa takes you to a violent, uncertain future in which fighing a dangerous alien invasion is your only way to survival.

Download Tabula Rasa Trial in Softonic

Unusually, the Chinese have decided to go for several mascots instead of one known as "Fuya". Each of the 5 mascots (to symbolize the 5 Olympic rings) mascot is pictured in a different pose, outfit and color. Fuwa also apparently embody the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals - the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow - and the Olympic Flame. The mascots are Beibei (gentle and pure), Jingjing (makes children smile), Huanhuan (symbolising fire and the passion of sport), Yingying (swift as an antelope symbolizing China's landscape) and Nini (joyful and innocent as a swallow).

In this Beijing Olympics mascot themed screensaver you've got Yingying who is fast and agile and can swiftly cover great stretches of land as he races across the earth according to the organisers. He is a symbol of the vastness of China's landscape and twinned with the antelope which the Chinese believe carries the blessing of health and the strength of body that comes from harmony with nature. His head ornament incorporates several decorative styles from the Qinghai-Tibet and Sinkiang cultures and the ethnic design traditions of Western China. Strong in track and field events, Yingying is a quick-witted and agile boy who represents the yellow Olympic ring.

Get into the Olympic mood as these fun mascots jump out and grab you in celebrating the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Download Beijing Olympics Wallpaper 4 Yingying in Softonic

Did you remember to include your vacation days? Have you sent cargo and would like to know the expected arrival date? You can use days, weeks, months, or years to calculate these or any other due date. Such tasks become simple with the Timestimator. Logistics managers, travel agents, secretaries and many other professionals who need convenient due date calculator will find Timestimator an easy-to-use and effective tool.

With the World clock dialog screen, you can easily make a list of clocks that show time in different parts of the world. This feature is similar to calculation of time zone differences, but here you can see a lot of time zones simultaneously and you do not need to click any buttons to calculate an actual time.

The Calendar is an extremely important tool for the modern human. Our life is a "timetable," and all timetables are based on calendars. Timestimator provides you with a perpetual calendar with handy navigation features. Timestimator can show you four, five, six or more months at once! All you need to do is enlarge the Timestimator's window.

Space science fiction has loads of fans around the world, so I wouldn't be surprised to see hundreds of players having fun in DarkOrbit.

This free online web game sets you behind the wheel of a spaceship as a pilot who works for a company, which you can choose from Earth, Mars or Venus. Your main objective in the game will be to collect raw materials for your company, as this is the only way to generate energy and therefore become ruler of the universe.

Being a web game, you enter DarkOrbit right in your web browser by entering your username and password. In this way you access your user profile, containing a summary of relevant data you can check at a glance. But if what you want is some action, go ahead and click on the Play button.

This will open a new window where you can actually play the game. Graphics are quite basic, but they do the trick. Now all you have to do is travel around space (clicking on the screen with your mouse – cursor keys don't work) and collect raw material, while you gain experience by killing enemy ships and other space creatures. Experience points can also be earned by doing quests.

DarkOrbit works fine for casual gamers who just need some easy fun for a while, but I don't think it will appeal that much to hardcore gamers, who will probably feel disappointed by the game's simple plot and even more simple graphics. The connectivity issues I had while testing the game won't help either.

DarkOrbit is a free, web game that challenges you to command a spaceship and wander around space in search of raw materials for your company. However, I don't think it's the kind of game you would spend hours playing.

Download DarkOrbit in Softonic

RoboGEO 5.4

Mapping your photos doesn't require a digital camera with built-in GPS thanks to RoboGEO. The program offers a "software only" solution for geocoding photos with latitude and longitude information. It provides the same functionality as a GPS camera, but without the bulk, expense, inconvenience, and hassle of wiring the two together.

Write to the EXIF headers

Write the latitude, longitude, altitude and photo direction to the image's EXIF headers to permanently embed the location data within the actual image. The writing is lossless, so there's no loss of image quality. You can also read and write IPTC data. It's lossless too.

Stamp the images

Stamp the local time, UTC offset, latitude, longitude, altitude, photo direction and datum at the bottom of each image. You can specify numerous options for the watermarks, including the latitude and longitude formats. Click on the thumbnail to the right to view an example.

Create Google Maps

Create Google Map web pages (sample) with icons that show where each picture was taken. When these icons are clicked, additional info about the picture is displayed along with the option of viewing the full size image. You can even include the GPS tracklog on the map (sample), automatically use the EXIF and IPTC information for the image title and description or merge individual EXIF/IPTC fields for whatever use you require.

Create Google Earth KML or KMZ files

Export KML or KMZ files for display in Google Earth (sample). RoboGEO's "KMZ for the Web" format creates very small KMZ files with embedded images that you can share with others by e-mail. Like with Google Maps, you can make full use of your EXIF and IPTC information in the image titles and descriptions. Since there's no requirement for loading images, you can also use this feature as your normal GPX tracklog viewer and you probably will once you see the results.

Upload geotagged photos to Flickr

Upload your photos to Flickr, the internet's best photo-sharing service. RoboGEO creates the Flickr geotags that allow you to link your photos to various types of maps (sample) using the Flickr2Map service. The SmartSet feature can automatically categorize your Flickr photos based on the keywords. You can also merge the photo's EXIF or IPTC information directly into the titles and descriptions.

Create ESRI shapefiles

Export ESRI shapefiles for viewing in programs such as ArcView. You can export point shapefiles that correspond to the geocoded photos, line shapefiles that represent the GPS tracklog, or both. RoboGEO can automatically create a custom URL attribute for each photo. These allow you to share shapefiles without also having to distribute the photos.

Export AutoCAD DXF Files

Export DXF files for most popular vector based drawing programs such as AutoCAD and IntelliCAD. The DXF files are AutoCAD 2000 format and contain clickable entities that allow you to easily view the photos. You can even include a GPS tracklog and represent it as a lightweight polyline on the drawing. The images can be located either on the local computer or on a web server. The latter allows you to easily share DWG files with others.

Associate dictation with each photo

Using any modern digital voice recorder, associate audio files with the photos. Simply record the dictation after taking each photo and the program will automatically equate the two. This functionality is independent of the program's geocoding capabilities, but you can still include the audio files in the Google Maps or Google Earth output if your choose.

Export GPX files

Export GPX files for use in other 3rd party GPS utility programs. The photo locations can be exported as either a list of waypoints or as the basis for a route. You can also include the GPS Tracklog. The program writes the image file path to the waypoint's comment field, which allows for easy viewing.

Download RoboGEO 5.4 in Softonic

This beta version of Virtual Earth combines local search with maps and aerial photography. Microsoft have included satellite imagery with maps in its local search results for quite some time but with Virtual Earth, the display is focused primarily around maps and aerial views. You can zoom in and out of maps or images, and drag the images around within the display at leisure and the basic search interface is similar to MSN's local search with "what" and "where" forms to specify what you're searching for. In addition, text results for searches are displayed in floating popup windows on the left side of the display. Aerial photographs are overlaid with labels, showing street names, landmarks, and other features, even including directional arrows for one-way streets plus permalinks saves a screenshot of everything open in Virtual Earth, including the map view location and search results.

It may not be in the same class as Google Earth but this is one of Microsoft's better efforts it has to be said.

Download Microsoft Virtual Earth Beta in Softonic

Earth Alerts 2008 1.74

Let’s say you’re a bit of a catastrophic person, worried about potential Earth events like volcanoes and earthquakes, maybe near where you live. Earth Alerts is just the program you need to have the situation under control and make you feel safer. At this stage, it only provides data for American cities, but maybe in the future the rest of the world will be reassured about fires, severe weather conditions and, as we mentioned, seismic activity.

To start monitoring a city, just click the New Location option you find in the Settings menu. Normally, if you write the name of city the program should find it in its database and automatically fill in all the information, like Time Zone or Weather Zone, which otherwise could be tricky to insert manually. Add as many cities as you like to receive regular updates during the day.

On the left side of Earth Alerts’s window, you have the list of your chosen cities, with the corresponding volcano, fire and earthquake alerts and also severe weather indications. There is also a global overview with ongoing Earth activity, with a special Tsunami and Tropical section in addition to those mentioned above.

Global Weather 3D 1.5

Global Weather 3D is probably one of the most visually appealing weather forecast tools you've ever seen.

Instead of displaying the usual geographic map with weather symbols, the program makes use of an attractive three-dimensional Earth globe to show the current position of clouds on our planet, plus marking their density with a color code. The globe is fully animated, meaning you can zoom in and out and also rotate and flip it with your mouse. The zoom tool though is not very powerful and doesn't allow you to go much into detail.

Global Weather 3D features a quite complete configuration menu which enables you to enable certain tools such as displaying geographical textures, showing day and night zones or adding countries' names and boundaries, among other options. On the downside, the program asked me to register when I tried to create customized waypoints, something I found especially disappointing after seeing the program labeled as freeware all the time.

With Global Weather 3D you can check weather conditions – or at least, cloud position – anywhere on Earth via an attractive interface.

Download Global Weather 3D 1.5 in Softonic

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

Along with Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat is one of the all-time great fighting games. It was also probably the first 2D title to that succeeded in simulating a 3D experience. In the late 80s, the game seemed so realistic that people thought it was unsuitable for younger players. Looking at it now, surely you wouldn’t say it is ‘realistic’, but you can still say it’s really violent. The final attacks, called ‘fatality’ or ‘brutality,’ definitely fit into this back this up.

In the third version of Mortal Kombat, the 'Ultimate' one, you can choose between 24 characters, each with their own special moves. To configure the keys you’d like to use, go to the Options > Set Config > Controllers menu; at this point, choose '6btn Pad' in the Port1 line and click Define. Now press the keys you would like to use to jump, move right, left, punch and kick by following the directions you see at the bottom of the frame.

If you are brave enough to face the bloody characters of Ultimate MK3, give this faithful reproduction of the game a try and see how close you get to the cliff’s edge.

Download Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in Softonic

You drive a racing car and your objective is to be the first at the finish first. The game gives you a feeling of speed and danger. Every level of the game is full of obstacles, which you need to overcome in a limited period of time taking different routes. The obstacles reduce the speed, skid your car or cause a car crash. Your car will encounter different checks in your way. The speed of your car reduces if you take an earth road. You can pick up such bonuses as life, scores, speed, and a gun.
WorldWide Telescope Beta

WorldWide Telescope could be regarded as Microsoft's direct competitor to Google Sky, but I wouldn't agree with that.

WWT does contain space imagery that enables you to observe starts, planets, constellations and other celestial elements without having to buy an expensive telescope, that's true. In that sense, it's similar to Google's space browsing tool. But in my opinion, this app is much more intended for professional astronomers – or at least serious astronomy fans – rather than for people who just want to take a sneak peek at our planet as if they were taking a ride on a NASA shuttle.

Don't get me wrong here: there's nothing wrong with being a serious astronomy app. I'm just warning you in case you expect something else. Other than that, WorldWide Telescope is a great tool that all astronomy fans are going to love. It includes loads of information and also lets you download guided tours from the program itself to learn more about a certain topic.

You can freely move around the sky with your mouse, but I found this a bit confusing and soon preferred to use the image galleries under the Explore menu. These galleries were a bit disappointing though, because you can perfectly see the boundaries of the image you're viewing and so it doesn't feel like a real telescope anymore.

Worldwide Telescope is not a space browser like Google Sky; rather than that, it's a comprehensive astronomy atlas with loads of data, photo galleries and freely downloadable guided tours.

Download WorldWide Telescope Beta in Softonic

If you're a big fan of the Solar System and staring into Space through your telescope, then you'll absolutely love OpenUniverse.

Open Universe is an exciting project that brings the Solar System to you - in realtime. Most similar programs simulate or recreate the solar system from static models but this program attempts to show you exactly what is going on at any one time. The program existing in a former state as Solar System Simulator (Ssystem) launched in 1997 and has expanded and advanced so much, that it's now come to encompass the entire universe. The word "Open" has been added to to encourage open source users to improve and enhance the project. This is a million times better than the Space Exploration option on Google Earth with highly detailed images of Earth and the planets. For example, you view the Earth from the Sun, zoom in and out and even zoom in on stars. It labels everything too so no more looking up in the sky and wondering what that constellation is. The graphics are not exactly brilliant - it's a bit block and some of the stars look like blobs of white ink. However as a learning tool, it's a brilliant little resource.

For space exploration fans and those that are trying to teach other about the Universe, OpenUniverse is an exciting and powerful project.

Download OpenUniverse 1.0 in Softonic

The screensaver is actually based on a web mash-up created by a group of developers (who are also Twitter fans, of course) just for fun. The screensaver loads up the Twitter timeline and displays it on a colorful animated globe, with cute characters representing each Twitter user.

In spite of being a 3D screensaver, TwittEarth doesn't use up a lot of resources and works fine almost on any computer. The only flaw I found was that twitts written in special characters (i.e. Japanese, Chinese) don't show up properly.

With TwittEarth you can follow live twits from all over the world in a nice 3D planet Earth that moves on your desktop while you're away.

Download TwittEarth Screensaver in Softonic

JetPhoto Studio 3.12.3

Long gone are the days when you took photos, printed them and kept them in your photo album. With the advent of digital cameras, our approach to pictures has completely changed. Creating, editing, publishing and sharing are now part of our daily photographic experience. JetPhoto Studio is an application to handle digital snaps on your PC and the net.

JetPhoto Studio will import pictures from your camera as soon as it is connected to your PC. We like how the main interface includes a calendar to let you browse photos by date. Jet Photo Studio has fairly basic editing tools, and functions like crop, sepia, black and white, image contrast, and auto enhancing, which will allow you to personalize your photos. You can also batch resize your photos and protect them with a watermark. JetPhoto Studio also allows you to rate photos by adding a star next to the ones you prefer. You can set tags to quickly identify related pictures, but annoyingly you’ll have to create new ones for each individual album.

On the multimedia side, JetPhoto Studio gives you a number of tools to help you play around with your pictures. Making screensavers, wallpapers and slide-shows is extremely easy and quick. You can also create two types of Flash movies, stand-alone or deluxe, the first being a typical slide show, and the second showing an animated thumbnail list of your selected images. The only downside is that you can’t set the types of animations and speed of transitions.

You can use JetPhoto Studio to send images, via MMS or infrared, to your friends’ mobiles, yet however exciting this sounds, the feature is not really up to standards. You’ll actually need to know your friend’s mobile brand and exact model and even if you do, there’s no telling whether the service will work in your country. We found that JetPhoto Studio did not support this feature in Spain.

Another promising feature is locating photos thanks to GPS. If you have a GPS receiver and Google Earth set up on your PC, this feature is especially easy to use. Connect your receiver to your PC, pick the model and your time zone, and launch Google Earth. Your selected pictures will automatically be tagged with the desired locations in your Google Earth. If you don’t have a GPS receiver, you can also point the photo location on a map. However this feature seems prone to bugs and we did not manage to generate maps properly.

JetPhoto Studio allows you to quickly upload images to the online photo sharing service Flickr, and it’s very easy to order quality printed copies via PrintExpress. The JetPhoto Server tool is also a good way for anybody with some scripting knowledge to upload and edit their photo albums onto their weblog or personal website.

We have fairly mixed feelings about Jet Photo Studio. It lets you manipulate photos in all sorts of ways, creating Flash movies, posting to Flickr or your website, and locate photos with your GPS. However sending images via mobile is not really up to scratch and Flash movies can not be customized. We were also disappointed that JetPhoto Studio doesn’t automatically import images already on your PC. A promising image viewer, but it’s not guaranteed that JetPhoto Studio will appeal to everyone.

Download JetPhoto Studio 3.12.3 in Softonic

I'm no geologist but I know a, excuse the pun, "gem" of a program when I see one and for any rock, mineral or geologist, this surely is one.

This comprehensive encyclopedia and research base contains just about everything there is to know about rocks, minerals and gems in an easy to search format with in depth descriptions and attractive images. If you need it customised to suit the needs or focus of your organisation, it can also do that too to reduce it's huge range and depth to something more manageable.

To be precise, the developers claim it has information on 600 minerals, 300 gems, 200 rocks, around 900 glossary items and a staggering 2100 pictures. Of course, it also features the entire periodic table with detailed info on each element, isotopes, allotropes and compounds. It also saves you valuable lab time because it tells you how these react and interact with each other. To cap it all, you can also find out about the geniuses and researchers that have pioneered the geological field and those that discovered each element, rock and gem.

Perhaps it can't replace Google or a good geological encyclopedia but for a free program, this is an impressive resource.

Download Earth's Core 1.0 Beta in Softonic
