Despite the terrible English translation, the program itself is easy to use thanks to a wizard-style interface that guides you step by step through the whole process. But if at any given moment you need to take a look at the program's Help, be aware that it's in Spanish.

This wouldn't be much of an issue because the program is pretty simple, but we did receive some error messages when trying to save the template and we would have appreciated it if we could have searched the Help file for some advice.

Download Numerador Fusión 1.0.13 MAX! in Softonic

OpenOffice.org 3.0 RC 4

OpenOffice 3.0 is already here, at least in beta version. The most popular alternative to the almighty Microsoft suite has released its first public beta to allow users to provide feedback and help fine-tune the final product. So here's our two cents.

First, though the OpenOffice site displays a warning about possible instability issues in this beta, fear them not. The complete suite was perfectly stable during our tests, with all its applications running as smoothly as expected. This new OpenOffice is compatible with all file formats from Microsoft Office, including the latest docx, xlsx, pptx and so on from Office 2008.

All OpenOffice tools, along with your more recent documents, are easily accessible from a launcher ("Start Centre") with freshly designed icons, which is one of the main new features in this version. The launcher includes a handy template manager as well, though it's quite empty at the moment.

The suite's applications met our expectations in every aspect: they're easy to use (especially if you're used to working with Microsoft's suite) and feature all the necessary tools to create complete documents, spreadsheets, presentations and databases. I particularly liked the wizard-style interface in Impress (the "Power-Point" app) which enables you to create presentations in no time.

OpenOffice 3.0 left a very good taste in our mouths. In spite of being labeled as Beta, the whole suite works perfectly fine and enables you to enjoy all of its new features right now.

Download OpenOffice.org 3.0 RC 4 in Softonic

If you're a Google Talk fan, like me, then the first good thing is that Gizmo5 and Google Talk are now connected. This means that Gizmo5 users can now send instant messages to Google Talk users but unfortunately, you can't call them although the developers promise that it's coming soon. To send Instant Messages, simply click on the IM icon next to your contacts name and you can instantly text other Gizmo5 users. One great feature of Gizmo5 is that you can perform free mobile phone and landline conference calling although you have to setup the system beforehand with the Gizmo5 FreeConferenceCall utility which can be tricky due to a few complicated configuration options. Another interesting feature is that Gizmo5 includes Asterisk PBX Support which means that you can now log into your virtual office with Asterisk PBX software. This basically means that you can receive calls and access your Gizmo5 phone wherever you are in the world. I also like the fact that it includes a free recorder which is something lacking in Skype.

Easy to use and integration with GTalk makes this a nice little app although it's calling rates need to be a lot more competitive before it can compete with Skype.

Download Gizmo5 4.0.0.386 in Softonic

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) 6.0.3

The worst part of buying a new computer is the fact that you have to backup your stuff in the old PC and move it all to the new one. Luckily there are some software apps that can help you with that.

One of them is FEBE, which stands for Firefox Environment Backup Extension. As it name states, this Firefox add-on lets you create a backup copy of all the important information in your browser (bookmarks, extensions, preferences, themes, cookies and more) and restore it in a different location, all in a very easy way.

With FEBE you can then have a perfectly synchronized copy of Firefox in each one of your computers, be it your desktop and laptop or home and office computers. It's also a great tool to have a backup copy of your browser just in case it crashes or if you want to test new versions without taking any risks. And if you can't be bothered creating a backup copy by yourself, use FEBE's scheduling tool and let the extension take care of it.

FEBE is seamlessly integrated into Firefox interface: open the Tools menu and you'll be able to access the extension's options menu and main functions. The only drawback we could find to the extension is the sounds played by the program when displaying any warning: they're a bit annoying so remember to turn them off in the settings menu.

If you want to have a complete backup copy of all your Firefox data or need to move Firefox settings from one PC to another, this is the tool you're looking for.

Download FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) 6.0.3 in Softonic

MetaCafe Pro 1.2.28

Nothing helps you get through a tough day at the office than a good old-fashioned viral email. Whether it’s funny, stupid, interesting or just plain sick, receiving a forwarded video, picture or text document is the highlight of the day for many a tortured office drone. Now, thanks to the rather unique MetaCafe, you don’t even need to wait for your pals to throw this spirit-lifting material your way.

The basic premise of the software is that it automatically trawls the web for popular viral items including movies, images, games and other time-wasting files. Within just a few minutes of firing up the app (or allowing it to load automatically on start-up) you’ll be presented with a series of the hottest files doing the rounds on email at the moment. Each item comes with a preview thumbnail and a brief description of what it’s about. You can then choose to download and play any movies, or view images within the MetaCafe interface.

The simplicity of this program is quite staggering and it makes it as easy as possible to siphon the stuff that’s likely to appeal to you. The categories (video, images, games, and other) can be customized so you only receive items that are of interest to you, such as funnies, news-related, sports-related etc. There’s a very helpful idiot’s guide that appears when you launch the program and the online help is particularly useful.

Other useful features include a ‘TV mode’ for viewing videos in full-screen with movie player controls, and the ability to forward links to the items to your buddies from within the program. You can even submit your own files to MetaCafe if you’ve been forwarded a particularly good file that you want to share with the rest of the user base.

Generally, the operation and performance of MetaCafe is very slick but there are a couple of things that bugged us a bit. For instance, it can take a while for the program to find new items when you start and this is made more confusing by the fact that there is no progress bar to show you that it's actually doing something. You should also be careful to ensure that the adult content filter is checked, as some of the material can be a little risqué for youngsters or the faint of heart.

Despite these minor glitches, this is a very original software concept that will help brighten up your day and amuse your friends and family to boot. Just don't let the boss catch you playing around with it.

Download MetaCafe Pro 1.2.28 in Softonic

Whether you share your time between a desktop and a laptop PC, or you work both with a home and an office PC, you'll often need to sync files between two computers.

Dropbox is the perfect solution for these situations. With this app you can seamlessly synchronize contents between several different computers – even mobile devices – no matter where you are. This means that you can use Dropbox not only to sync files between computers, but also to share photos with friends or collaborate in a common project with your workmates.

Dropbox is dead easy to use. All you have to do is install a small client and from that moment on, you'll have a special folder inside the My Documents folder. Anything you drop here will be synced in the background with your public dropbox profile – and therefore accessible online. Dropbox currently offers 2 GB of free storage, which should be enough to share quite a bunch of files.

Worried about privacy? Fear not. Only computers you link to your account will be able to access your files. Also, Dropbox keeps track of changes, so that you can access previous versions of a file. In a way it works as a backup tool as well, because it keeps copies of your files.

Dropbox has a main drawback though: it's painfully slow. Yes, it works in the background and yes, you don't have to be checking the uploading rate every ten seconds, but 30 minutes to upload three photos is simply too much for me.

Dropbox is an easy, handy tool with which you can sync files online, share them and have them always at hand.

Download Dropbox 0.6.394 in Softonic

NetSetMan 2.5.0

If you constantly use your laptop or PC between several different internet connections, then you’re probably tired of having to constantly configure them. Entering proxies, static IP addresses and other LAN configuration data can be really annoying if you have to switch quickly or regularly. NetSetMan takes the pain out of this by allowing you to rapidly change between pre-configured network settings.

The free version of this program (for non-commercial use only) allows you to create 6 profiles – more than enough for most users - including IP address settings, Subnet Masks, Default Gateways and DNS servers. These settings are then saved as tabs which you can flick between and activate according to the connection you are using. Other settings you can configure are the Computer Name, WINS Server, Default Printer and Run Scripts.

The good thing about this program is that it’s very easy to set up a connection. As long as you have the details to hand, you can set-up 6 different connections in just a few minutes. The entry fields are also easier to input data into than Windows ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties’ dialogue, which for some strange reason, tends to add extra zeros. You can also backup all of your connections settings in a separate file which you can then send via e-mail to another person who has NetSetMan installed.

The downside is that the interface is not very clearly designed. For example, if you want to do the simple task of renaming a configuration, you might end up spending more time looking for an ‘edit’ option than configuring the connection itself! In the end, all you have to do is right-click on the name and choose ‘re-name’ but it would have been easier if the developer had added such an option to the interface itself. In addition, you can’t configure SMTP or Firewall settings so in reality, it only saves you half the job of configuring a connection.

Nevertheless, NetSetMan is an essential tool if you do have to change connections from office to home or on the road regularly. It today’s increasingly mobile world, this sort of tool should come as standard with Windows.

Download NetSetMan 2.5.0 in Softonic

Password Memory 2009 encrypts and manages your passwords and helps you to log in to websites much more easily and quickly than having to enter them every time you visit them. Firefox already offers this option although Password memory 2009 is surely a much safer way of storing particularly sensitive passwords (such as for banking sites). In fact, Password Memory 2009 uses several different algorithms to guarantee a very high level of security.

The interface follows the same format as that of Microsoft Office and simply requires you to add passwords into a clipboard where they will then be automatically transferred into the right fields when you surf to that particular site. If you want a hard copy of your passwords, you can also export them to XML, HTML, text files and Excel in a few clicks.

Password Memory is a very powerful password manager that offers maximum protection and makes life a lot easier than having to remember passwords for each separate site.

Download Password Memory 2009 in Softonic

PowerDVD 8.0.1730

Far from being just office workhorses, computers are also thought of as complete entertainment systems that you can use to chat with friends, play videogames or watch movies. Regarding this last option, there's a wide range of DVD players out there, but we'll focus our attention on one of them: Power DVD.

The program's installation process is very quick. It includes Google Toolbar as an add-on but you can decline its installation if you're not interested. Once launched, you gain access to its main interface which, to be honest, is not especially nice: a close-up of a girl wearing weird sunglasses is not the kind of thing you expect to see on the screen when opening a DVD player. It would look much better with some abstract design or just the program logo instead. Anyway, configuration settings allow you to customize this interface with skins but there are no skins included. At least you can change the color scheme by clicking on the display.

Power DVD is generally very easy to use. All the buttons on the player panel have tooltips to give you hints about their usage. Also, most of their functions can be performed with the mouse or the keyboard (using the hotkey displayed in the tooltip). When playing a movie in full screen mode, the panel hides automatically and shows only if you move the mouse. Still, you can access all the program's functions through a comprehensive context menu by right-clicking anywhere on the image.

As for the playing functions, the movie flows very smoothly even when you move the window around or play it in full screen mode. Sound can be configured in different ways, depending on your hardware means (from headphones to an 8-speaker surround system) in order to obtain the best possible sound quality. During our tests, we also found some interesting tools: one offers the possibility to change playing speed and therefore obtain slow or fast motion images; another one lets you take snapshots of your favourite scenes in the movie, according to the settings in Configuration – Player – Advanced - Snapshot; and finally a tool called "Say it again" with which you can repeat certain dialogues over and over again. This may be useful for foreign language students or movie fans who like to learn certain script lines by heart.

Power DVD is then a perfect solution for your all DVD playing needs. It may seem quite simple at first sight but after all, you don't need much more apart from "play" and "pause" to happily watch a movie on your PC. And in case you want to know more about the program and their developers, have a look at our interview with Dr. Jau Huang, Cyberlink's founder.

Download PowerDVD 8.0.1730 in Softonic

FileMed is an effective Electronic Medical Record (EMR) solution for small and medium sized medical care facilities. It's recommended for those facilities holding up to around 200 users. FileMed basically offers simple patient management so that you can keep track of your patients conditions and ailments without having to sift through bulky boxes of papers or appointment cards.

FileMed also allows you to create Clinical Charts for patients according to their condition and allows you to attach diagnosis reports. Of course, FileMed also allows you to schedule that most important of details - schedules and appointments of patients. After a consultation, you can also attach clinical charts, X-rays and other documents that you'd like to scan in and store offline. FileMed also makes it relatively easy to setup an internal office network so that you can share documents and patient data between doctors, receptionists and other assistants.

The fact that this program is free makes it all the more appealing. One of the problems with these PDF programs is that invariably, they change the formatting of your text, once you've converted your Word, Publisher etc. document to PDF. PrimoPDF largely avoids this however converting to PDF as faithfully as the original. It's also remarkably fast and the installation is equally speedy.

Once installed, the program appears as a virtual printer in your Printer Driver preferences too. The main downside, of which there are few, is that you are regularly prompted to register although this is a small price to pay for an excellent program. It's also a bit unreliable when converting images. Text is fine but images can sometimes be in the wrong position or formatted incorrectly when converting from Office documents. It also doesn't use Windows standard way of saving documents - it has it's own format which doesn't suggest a file name but it's a small drawback.

A really excellent PDF creator that will have Adobe critics laughing all the way to their virtual printers.

Download PrimoPDF 4.1.0.9 in Softonic

Do you need the processing power of Microsoft Word but don't have hundreds of dollars to pay for the Office package itself?

Jarte may be your answer. It's a free word processor based on Microsoft WordPad's word processing engine. It's extremely fast and easy to use. In a way it acts more like WordPad on steroids, adding tons of useful features to the basic word processor. It's very portable - it can fit on a USB stick - and yet it can open any document compatible with Word and WordPad.

Believe it not, Microsoft is continually upgrading the simple WordPad editing engine, although WordPad itself hasn't changed. never know it by examining WordPad. Jarte however takes advantage of these changes and has evolved to take advantage of the new useful features that Microsoft have added. These include tabbed document windows for easy access to open documents, larger buttons for the most commonly used functions, instant dictionary and thesaurus word look-up and a free spell check and text search tools that do not impose themselves on top of the text you are trying to edit.

There are many new features in Jaxtr that make it a superb option for those that can't afford or access Word but need it's processing power.

Download Jarte 3.3 in Softonic

Wouldn't it be nice if you could edit PDF documents in the same way that you edit Word documents?

Well you can with Abdio PDF Editor (formerly known as Microadobe PDF Editor) which is a professional PDF editing application. Abdio PDF Editor aims to make creating and editing PDF files just like using Mircosoft Office Word and for the most part, it succeeds. Abdio PDF Editor also allows you to work with a wide range of file formats such as native Word and HTML files.

Creating a new PDF is easy in Abdio PDF Editor. Simply open a new project, select the page size you require and the background color. Next you have the option to import a document into Abdio PDF Editor. You can import by selecting "File" and then "Import" Word (DOC), RTF, TXT, HTML and XML formats. From here, you can edit text much as you would in Word. You can insert images and tables, hyperlinks and edit the header and footer just as you would with any Word document. To secure your document at the end, you can define a password so that it can only be opened by authorised users in Abdio PDF Editor.

If you're not a big fan of editing in Adobe's PDF own editor or are a grand master at using Word, Abdio PDF Editor is a considerably easier way of editing PDFs.

Download Abdio PDF Editor 8.6 Build 80705 in Softonic

Any new content can be sent directly to the phone via WAP protocol. If the computer is connected to the Internet, any other physical link to the phone becomes redundant.

Using data exchange protocols, Create Ringtone sends the newly made content directly to the phone. A new ringtone or wallpaper can become a present for relatives and friends. By just choosing a global operator and typing the phone number you can forward both greetings and presents. IrDA, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity are equally supported. Automatic conversion and file transfer take a minute or so.

The program's intuitive interface makes the job of creating a new tune or a background a real pleasure. Create Ringtone saves both time and money that might have been spent with a content provider. It gives independence for creative thoughts and means to apply them in custom phone profiles. With wide range of supported audio formats one can convert any audio file into a trendy ringtone with a few mouse clicks.

Download Create Ringtone 4.98 in Softonic

Kingsoft Office 2007 6.3.0.1371

The productivity suite market is generally dominated by two main options: you either use the proprietary Microsoft Office suite or its open source alternative, Open Office. But if you don't like any of them, I'm glad to inform you there's a third choice.

Kingsoft Office is a fully featured, completely free office suite you can use for your daily work tasks. It includes three main applications: Writer, Presentation and Spreadsheets, to create DOC, PPT and XLS files respectively. The three of them are installed and launched separately – unlike Lotus Symphony, which uses a common interface. There are no apps for databases, email, or web publications.

I must admit these three apps are almost identical to their Microsoft Office equivalents, so identical in fact I'm beginning to wonder if it's just a copy. Whatever the Kingsoft developers thought about when creating the suite, I'm happy to be able to use a complete suite without having to pay for it. Also, the fact that it's so similar to other suites you may have been using up to know makes the learning curve practically non-existent.

Kingsoft includes interesting options such as the ability to export any document to PDF format and support for document encryption. On the downside, the suite felt a bit unstable during our tests: the Spreadsheets app, for example, crashed on one of our machines but worked perfectly well on a different one.

In any case, Kingsoft Office 2007 is a great free alternative for productivity suite users who don’t want to tie themselves to the same old choices.

Download Kingsoft Office 2007 6.3.0.1371 in Softonic

Public Access Desktop 6.1

If your PC is shared by many people, then you don't know what's happening to it when you're not there. Or maybe you administer a network of PC's used by several different users. Public Access Desktop makes your life easier by allowing you to make a foolproof workstation easy and safe for any public place.

Once installed and setup, it prevents anyone unauthorised from configuring the system or filling the hard disk with unwanted files. You can create an Internet Kiosk for cybercafes, library information terminals, in-store terminals or other public access PCs. Another option is a configuration designed to stop children accessing your home PC.

For most home usersd however, the most useful application is to completely disable access to the files installed on your PC and prevent users from changing PC settings while allowing full access to all necessary applications you specify. You can selectively enable to launch any program installed on your PC, not only the web browser, mail client and office applications but also any other software you specify. You can even specifiy a time limit for each user.

Public Access Desktop is a powerful program that puts professional network admin tools at your fingertips. However, it's not 100% secure and anyone with some hacking experience could probably circumvent it fairly easily.

Download Public Access Desktop 6.1 in Softonic

Are you familiar with GTD (Getting Things Done)? It's a task management system that is supposed to help you be more productive and handle tasks and projects, both long term and short term.

EasyTask Manager is an application which supports GTD. You start by creating your different projects, then filling these with actions. You'll have to process your actions by putting them into the correct category. EasyTask Manager respects GTD terminology, so you'll find the traditional inbox, next actions, next days and someday folders, among others.

Once an action is finished, make sure to mark it as completed. EasyTask also allows you to sync your projects regularly. You'll have to enter an importance level, start and due date and ensure your tasks are in the correct context.

The interface offers a clear and detailed view of all your actions and projects. However I felt the buttons could be a little bigger and the whole interface a little more flexible to work with.

Still, if you're a big fan of the GTD method, you should find EasyTask Manager to be a good productivity tool.

Download EasyTask Manager 2.0 in Softonic
