Project64 2.1

Although it didn’t have anything like the fancy wireless wands or web browsing capabilities of the Wii, there was always something quite enchanting about Nintendo’s N64. Ultimately it was never going to beat the PlayStation in terms of its market share, but the 64 still brings back fond memories of endless nights blasting the hell out of each other on Goldeneye, or missing dozens of lectures to concentrate on Super Mario 64. The chances are that as soon as the GameCube came along, your N64 went out with the rubbish – a decision you’ve probably lived to regret if you’re anything like us. Thankfully, Project64 helps you to transport yourself back to those halcyon days by allowing you to emulate all your old favourite N64 games on your PC.

The application is designed to play ROM files, which are essentially 'images' of the data inside an N64 cartridge. Graphically, the games are pretty good, although not quite as sharp as we remember, with a few too many jagged lines and blocky sprites for our liking. This is understandable, given that the games were originally intended to be played on a TV, which has a completely different way of perfecting pixels. Nevertheless, the overall visual experience is quite authentic, and is complemented by crisp audio reproduction.

In terms of its performance, Project64 is able to handle most ROMs without any problems and we didn’t experience any compatibility issues. Be warned though, that you’ll need a decent amount of RAM and a fairly good graphics card if you want to avoid any jerkiness when playing some of the more sophisticated games, such as Super Smash Bros. There are lots of options within the emulator for tweaking the visuals, including changing the screen resolution, running in full-screen mode or applying anti-aliasing. However, the audio functions are limited to a bog-standard volume control.

Thankfully, the fun of playing N64 games with your pals isn’t lost in this emulator and Project64 supports up to four players. As you can imagine, it’s pretty tricky fitting four people around one keyboard, so you’re best off using USB controllers if there’s more than two of you. Another nice touch is the inclusion of a cheat mode, which provides you with the opportunity to power-up your games or access special options, much as the old Action Replay cartridges used to. Each game has its own set of cheats, which is great for prolonging the life of a game or getting through particularly tough levels.

Project64 is the closest thing you’ll get to the N64 without actually buying the console itself and it performs better than other Nintendo emulators, as well as generic solutions such as MAME. It may not be a pixel-perfect recreation of the device, but it’s certainly entertaining enough to keep you off work for a few days.

Download Project64 2.1 in Softonic

MAME Plus! 0.147

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator and when used in conjunction with an arcade game's data file (ROMs), MAME Plus! will more or less faithfully reproduce that game on a PC. MAME Plus! can emulate thousands of classic arcade video games from the 70s, 80s and 90s, and even some from the current decade.

The ROM images that MAME utilizes are "dumped" from arcade games' original circuit-board ROM chips. MAME becomes the "hardware" for the games, taking the place of their original CPUs and support chips. Therefore, these games are NOT simulations, but the actual, original games that appeared in arcades.

As gaming technology continues to rush forward, MAME prevents important "vintage" games from being lost and forgotten. It's incredibly effective once you've loaded a ROM file although for newbies, the process may prove a little but tricky as the interface appears more complicated than it needs to be.

MAME Plus! is an excellent alternative for those that have had problems running their favourite vintage games in the original MAME.

Download MAME Plus! 0.147 in Softonic

DeSmuME is a Nintendo DS emulator that allows you to play games on your PC using DS ROM files, which you can download from the Internet.

The GameBoy has come a long way since we first saw that big white and grey block at the end of the last century. Its great, great, great grandson, the Nintendo DS is now even more powerful than the high-tech machines doing the rounds in the arcades of the early 90s. In fact, it's so good that sometimes you'll want to play with it in the office, which obviously you can't. Well, actually you can. Actually you can't. Well, with DeSmuME you sort of can. Let us explain...

The first thing you'll need to realize is that downloading DS ROM files is illegal, so on your own head be it if the FBI rolls up outside your house. Legalities aside, DeSmuME is a pretty decent emulator, originally designed for games programmers to develop and test their latest creations. DeSmuME can be a little tricky to set up, but once running you'll be able to enjoy a huge selection of games in ROM format.

DeSmuME is a solid Nintendo DS emulator for your PC.

Download DeSmuME 0.9.8 in Softonic

Paper Dash is a classic style game that emulates the look and feel of the original Paper Boy.

The premise is simple. You're a paper boy who has to deliver news papers to houses along your route while avoiding hazards and picking up powerups. There are cans of soda that give you money and you can pick up more newspapers too.

Paper Dash is free but ad-supported so there will be large banner ads that show up from time to time. This is a small price to pay since Paper Dash is free, but it can become annoying.

Gameplay is fun and challenging, but it does get repetitive at times. Paper Dash can be played with a traditional keyboard or with a touch screen, though the touch screen controls don't disappear if you're playing with a keyboard, which is odd.

Overall, Paper Dash is a fun game but doesn't do much to innovate from the gameplay of Paper Boy.

Download Paper Dash 1.0.0.1 in Softonic

ScummVM 1.5.0

ScummVM may not sound like the most fetching name for a program but old school gaming fans won't care about that.

If Double Dragon, Outrun and Kick Off 2 all played an important part of your misspent childhood, then ScummVM is for you. Note, however, that ScummVM does not come pre-installed with games - it's strictly an emulator only and you'll have to find the RAM files for games yourself. The beauty of ScummVM is that it works for several platforms at once so no matter if you had a Spectrum, Amiga or even PSP, ScummVM will run it for you.

ScummVM works by replacing the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed. Among the systems ScummVM supports are Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Dreamcast, PocketPC, PalmOS, AmigaOS, BeOS, OS/2, PSP, PS2 and SymbianOS. Although as I said, no games come bundled with ScummVM, the developer does provide some free ones to download on the homepage, including Flight of the Amazon Queen, Lure of the Temptress and Broken Sword 1. It's a shame there aren't more than this, although you can buy most classic titles on Amazon and eBay.

The downside of ScummVM is that, in an effort to keep it flexible for cross platform use, it doesn't have a very slick interface. However, this isn't a big deal because you only use ScummVM to launch the games, not play them. The latest release of ScummVM features many back-end port improvements meaning you should find it far more stable than before.

If you hark back to the classics and don't want to mess around with several different emulators at once, then ScummVM is a great multipurpose choice.

Download ScummVM 1.5.0 in Softonic

YouWave is a program that emulates the Android operating system on your mobile phone.

Much like BlueStacks App Player, YouWave lets you try out Android applications and games on your PC in a way that lets you see exactly how they would look and play on an Android phone.

YouWave simulates everything on the Android interface, like even the touchpad. In addition, YouWave offers Android 2.3 compatibility and also simulates an SD card. You can run games and even play multiplayer games online via YouWave.

Installation and Configuration

First, you'll need to uninstall it if you have <a title="VirtualBox "href="http://virtualbox.en.softonic.com/"> VirtualBox installed on your PC, you'll need to uninstall it before installing YouWave.

The installation process for YouWave works like any other program and is relatively simple. Just follow the install wizard prompts and you'll be good to go in no time.

Downloading apps or Google Play Store installation

By default, YouWave installs apps that are usually found on a new Android phone. You can access them from the menu: music, settings, browser, and more.

To add new applications you can choose between two methods: through the Google Play Store or the application's APK.

You can access the Google Play Store from a web browser and download the applications you want directly from there.

If you want to do it directly, you will need to have the APK file of the application you want to run stored in the YouWave apps folder. By default, the path is C:\Users\XXXX\youwave\android apps.

Results

On a practical level, despite some minor stability issues, YouWave works great. It allows external applications to load and simulates quite well on the Android phone interface. Thanks to YouWave you can access applications that were previously only available on your phone.

YouWave gives Android enthusiasts the opportunity to try out apps on their PC in a simulated Android interface environment.

Download YouWave 2.3.4 in Softonic

It's very much a user generated game that involves ultimately taking part in a space program with other users.

The main aim in KSP is to build a space-worthy craft, capable of flying it's crew out into space, without killing them. At your disposal are a collection of parts, which must be assembled to create a functional ship. Each part has a different function and will affect the way a ship flies:

Kerbal Space Program allows players to design, build and pilot a space vehicle from pre-fab modules. These modules or parts include engines, fuel tanks, and wings and to make things more interesting, additional parts such as bombs, payloads and landing gear have been added to the game by players.

Some of the most notable features of KSP are:

The Vehicle Assembly Building which allows players to build spacecraft

Physics-based Flight Simulation for realistic flights

Accurate real-time distances . the Kerbal Planet is 600km in radius!

Mod-enabled so players can create new content and modify the game

At the moment there is only one planet - Kerbin - which you launch from and its moon, known as the Mün. There is also a sun called Kerbol. Kerbin and the Mün travel along an orbit, with Kerbin orbiting the sun and the Mün orbiting Kerbin thus emulating the Earth, Sun and Moon.

Like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="189271">Minecraft</taglink>, Kerbal Space Program leaves a lot of room for imagination. Players can create almost anything which has lead to the creation of several mods for the game which allow vehicles and other craft to be added to the game.

Kerbal Space Program has a small but thriving community of players although this looks set to expand as the developers plan to add more planets and moons, extra-vehicular activities and a space station. At the moment, Kerbal Space Program is free to play but it will eventually require payment to play once it has reached a higher level of development.

Kerbal Space Program is a unique and fun game. If you're a fan of Minecraft and have an interest in Space, you will particularly enjoy it.

Download Kerbal Space Program (KSP) 0.13.2 Alpha in Softonic

Super Mario World Deluxe 1.0

If you were a big fan of the SNES version of Super Mario then Super Mario World Deluxe is a delightful remake.

Along with Super Mario 3: Mario Forever, it's considered by fans to be one of the best Super Mario remakes around. The slight difference is that they makers of Super Mario World Deluxe haven't just cloned the Mario character - they've given this one a personality all of his own.

Super Mario World Deluxe follows the same type of gameplay and adventures as the original Super Mario series although it's clearly not as polished as the original and looks and plays a bit amateur in places. In addition, unlike Super Mario 3: Mario Forever, the controls are more like the original, so it's easier to get used to.

However, Super Mario World Deluxe's nowhere near as complete as the former or original. For example, there are only 5 levels to choose from (compared to 50 in Super Mario 3: Mario Forever) and the graphics aren't quite as faithful to the original.

Super Mario World Deluxe is still a great remake of the classic Super Mario series on the SNES.

Download Super Mario World Deluxe 1.0 in Softonic
