When it comes to drive emulation, DAEMON Tools is pretty much the standard. It's free for personal use, easy to use, light on resources and does exactly what it says on the tin.

What it does

The Lite version of DAEMON Tools only lets you emulate up to four virtual drives but doesn't have the extra features of the Pro and Advanced editions, such as support for DVD HD and Blu-Ray drivers, or the ability to create image files. However this version of DAEMON Tools is just perfect for the average home user, who will hardly need to emulate more than a couple drives simultaneously.

DAEMON Tools supports a wide variety of formats and is a really useful app for accessing your CD collection without having to carry them around, protecting them from scratches in the process.

Usability

Emulating a virtual drive may not seem that useful at first sight, but if you think about it, it has many advantages: you can load any image file directly on your system, you save the time and effort of CD burning and plus, virtual drives are much faster than actual CD units.

After installation – and the necessary system reboot – DAEMON Tools shows up as an unobtrusive icon in the system tray from which you can access the program's main tools and the configuration menu. All you have to do is browse to where your image file is stored and 'mount' it as a virtual drive using DAEMON Tools.

Hard working and reliable

DAEMON Tools supports a wide variety of formats and is a really useful app for accessing your CD collection without having to carry them around, protecting them from scratches in the process.

Conclusion

With DAEMON Tools you can easily emulate up to four virtual drives on your system, and mount a wide range of image files on them.

Download DAEMON Tools lite 4.47.1.0333 in Softonic

Open Freely is a free, multi-format file viewer that will allow you to open and view all kinds of documents, including media files and <taglink type="program" country="en" id="84501">Office</taglink> documents.

Download Open Freely now and you won't have a single problem installing or using it. The installation process is simple, and using the app itself is very pleasant - the interface is sleek and simple, the icons clear and interaction smooth. Open Freely is a pleasure to use.

In so far as supported files, Open Freely will open a huge variety of standard formats. It doesn't stretch to anything particularly unusual, but really covers all the basics, from Office Documents to Audio files and Windows system files to coding docs.

What makes Open Freely stand out is that it has some extra tools that will come in really handy. You'll be able to view details of all the files you open, as well as opening any of them in a hex editor, which hardcore users will appreciated. What's more, you can even open and edit Word documents, something you definitely don't see every day.

As far as free file viewers go, Open Freely is one of the best we've seen.

Download Open Freely 2.126.1.0 in Softonic

qBittorrent is an easy BitTorrent client that reminded us of uTorrent, because of its clean design and ease of use.

With qBittorrent you can manage all sorts of contents. The program includes a built-in search engine with support for the main .torrent databases, RSS feeds, and a Torrent creator, among other features. It’s also compatible with UPnP / NAT-PMP and more.

The best thing about qBittorrent is its simplicity. You don’t need to configure any settings or run any configuration wizard to get it working. Just run the app and it’s ready to start. The only tool that will require an extra plug-in is the built-in search engine.

qBittorrent has other interesting features such as support for tags to organize your files, the ability to switch off the computer once the downloads are finished and a Web interface that lets you manage your downloads remotely.

qBittorrent is a simple, clean, easy to use BitTorrent client with all the features you'd expect from a high-quality app.

Download qBittorrent 3.0.5 in Softonic

Tixati 1.92

Tixati is a simple but powerful free BitTorrent client for PC.

One of Tixati's most appealing characteristics is the simplicity of its layout. As you probably realize, configurations and settings are 90% of any BitTorrent client, but unfortunately, especially for less experienced users, this can be one of the most complicated and off-putting aspects.

Easy to Use

With Tixati, you won't have this problem. Although the client is packed full of features and tools, it's simply laid out and very easy to find your way around. There's excellent online help and support, while the app also comes with a crisp, clear overview log and built-in diagnostic tools.

Powerful Too

Tixati has all the tools you'd expect of a torrent app, as well as a few nice extras. It goes without saying that you'll be able to download via torrents, schedule tasks, filter IPs, limit bandwidth and even ensure you stay up to date with the latest available downloads thanks to a built-in RSS reader. It also offers complete DHT support and configuration options that should give you all the options you need, whether you are inexperienced or advanced.

Tixati is a BitTorrent client that provides power and speed without complications. We recommend it.

Download Tixati 1.92 in Softonic

music2pc 2.13

music2pc is a very simple program that allows you to download music without using P2P or torrent apps.

Some people will like the thought of downloading music this way, because as well as hiding possible dangers, P2P downloads are often illegal. The music2pc app is very easy to use, and won't cause you any problems at all. Type the music you want into the search box, choose from one or the other search provider and wait for the available downloads to appear.

Depending on the type of music you are looking for, music2pc can take a few minutes to return results. Once they display, you'll see the artist name, title, duration and bitrate of the song. There'll also be an option to download the song in MP3 format to whatever folder you choose. music2pc's configuration settings are very limited, and just allow you to use a proxy for finding music.

There are two problems with music2pc. Firstly, it's a very limited app. It just allows you to search and download, and there are no nice extras that will make the experience any smoother. Secondly, music2pc doesn't tell you exactly where the music is coming from, making it no safer than other ways of downloading music. On the upside, it's free, and the developer assures that music2pc is also legal.

It's not clear where music2pc's download's come from, but as an alternative source for free music, it's an interesting tool.

Download music2pc 2.13 in Softonic

In fact I got the odd error message while testing it, but other than that, the program worked fine. Transfer speed was excellent, along with the array of tools the program puts at your disposal to handle torrent files. Also, the program was totally unobtrusive for the user and very light on resources.

Deluge features a clear, uncluttered interface where you can easily manage all your file transfers and see information about each one of them. Also, the program's configuration settings enable you to tweak its behavior in great detail: you'll be able to limit bandwidth usage, configure a proxy server and also enable special plug-ins to add extra functionality to the program.

In all, Deluge is a powerful, easy-to-use BitTorrent client that's worth a try and will hopefully improve its stability under Windows in future releases.

Download Deluge 1.3.3 in Softonic

If you're not satisfied with your Torrent client and feel that you could squeeze some extra mileage out of your connection, then you should give BitTyrant a go.

BitTyrant uses a different type of torrent protocol that's compatible with BitTorrent and is optimized for fast download performance. Now, the big selling point of this client is speed although this cannot be guaranteed depending on what type of connection you have, how many seeds a torrent has etc.

However, the developers claim that it's up to three times quicker than Azureus and much fairer in the way it rewards uploaders rather than downloaders. In terms of interface however, there's little difference - BitTyrant looks exactly like Azureus although there are a few optional features to display statistics relevant to BitTyrant’s operation. There is however an underlying difference between it and other clients. BitTyrant differs in its selection of which peers to unchoke and send rates to unchoked peers. In this way, it theoretically means that bandwidth speeds are used more efficiently and fairly although as I say, much will depend on your own connection and ISP provider.

If you're happy with Azureus then there's no big reason to change to BitTyrant but if you've been experiencing declining download speeds or connection issues, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Download BitTyrant 1.1.1 in Softonic

The program is very simple both in design and functionality. There are no options, no extra tools, no settings menu: just a list of torrent sites and two text fields to enter the keywords for your search and some optional filters respectively. You can choose which search engines to use and which not, but apart from that, there's basically no other way to tweak the program's behavior.

Global results are presented using a color code, each color representing the results from each separate site, which is a nice way to categorize results. Double clicking on each entry will open your default web browser with the correspondent torrent site. From this moment on, that is, if you really want to download the file, you'll need a torrent client.

TorrentForage offers you an easier, faster way to search for torrent files, but it ends up being too simple. Some extra tools would have been nice.

Download TorrentForage 1.5 in Softonic

At the time, users were literally crying that they would no longer be able to share files for nothing over the Internet. As it turned out, they needn't have worried because since then we've seen countless P2P clients come and go. Aside from being the world's first radio-enabled peer-to-peer software, FileCroc doesn't bring anything new to the table, however, it does combine a wealth of useful features with a smart GUI.

With shades of Ares about it, FileCroc works through a decentralised network with more than 50 million users, meaning that you invariably find what you're looking for and transfer times are pretty quick. It can even be used to download Torrent files, giving it extra bonus points in my book. Thanks to its drag-and-drop control method, it's dead easy to start sharing files with the program from the get-go.

Besides just giving you a platform to share files, FileCroc also includes a smart chat facility, with the ability to create your own rooms and host files within them. You also get a neat built-in player that lets you preview and play songs before they download. I've heard some grumblings before about an adware toolbar called 'Navelex,' which installs automatically with the client, but I found no sign of it in this version.

If you want a fully-featured P2P client with a fast search facility then FileCroc could be just the thing you're looking for.

Download FileCroc 1.0.1.3006 in Softonic

GreedyTorrent can help you survive on trackers that enforce a minimum 1:1 trading ratio, and can keep you from getting banned for not uploading. So how does it work? In simple words, it modifies the conversation between your bittorrent client and the tracker, suppressing the actual upload amount. Instead, GreedyTorrent puts you in control of your own upload ratio -- you can define how much upload you want to submit to the tracker.

GreedyTorrent has the following features:

GreedyTorrent is set-once-and-forget type software. No need of configuring it each time you queue a torrent file to download.

No complicated options to configure. The default installation of GreedyTorrent is configured to provide you five times actual upload, enough for the survival of a normal ADSL user. There is no need to manually find the hash values or to set tracker URLs, it takes care of them automatically. GreedyTorrent was developed with the beginner user in mind, with an easy to use interface.

GreedyTorrent generates no additional traffic. It does not run or emulate an "extra torrent client", and thus does not waste your precious bandwidth.

You can continue to use your favorite BitTorrent client, no need to switch to another BitTorrent client to use GreedyTorrent.

Download GreedyTorrent 1.0.1 Beta 170 in Softonic
