The Suffering

I'm not particularly fond of terror and gore movies, and that extends to videogames of this ilk as well. However, I can still appreciate good examples of the horror genre, like The Suffering.

The game's story begins with the main character – you, that is – being sent to prison for killing his whole family, though as we eventually find out there is nothing to prove you guilty and you don't remember anything about it either. Soon after your entrance the prison is shaken by some kind of earthquake and a series of nasty, deadly creatures begin killing prisoners and prison guardians. In other words, chaos takes over everything.

This is where the real adventure begins. Without knowing what is really happening and having very few weapons, you mission consists on exploring the prison corridors and fighting these strange creatures.

Honestly, the graphics in The Suffering are not brilliant. But that doesn't prevent you from enjoying every single bit of the game, thanks to its easy gameplay and immersive plot.

The atmosphere in The Suffering can get really oppressive: the prison is so dark that sometimes you don't see a thing. Also you hear mysterious voices whispering at you all the time, only interrupted by people desperately screaming while being chopped up. If there's anything to complain about in The Suffering, it would be its level of violence. If you think you're not ready for really shocking, bloody scenes you'd better not try this one.

The Suffering is a great terror game that may not have the greatest graphics, but really gets you hooked up to the story.

Download The Suffering in Softonic

You can use a range of martial arts in your struggle against the dark forces of the Stones Metin.

This classic role-playing game is based online with different classes based on various martial arts weapons. You can use swords, spears or bows and over time, your aim is to become the most powerful warrior in the Orient. Graphically, the game is steeped in Oriental symbols with some fantastic buildings and backdrops although it's the excellent soundtrack that sticks in the mind. The battle scenes are also pretty memorable as you take on warriors from other empires in your quest for dominance of the continent. You can switch between a mix of martial arts from what seems like kung fu to taikwando and karate.

If you like kung fu and martial arts games, then you'll love this - great graphics and a great soundtrack mix to make it a beat-em-up classic.

Download Metin2 20080915 in Softonic

Tabula Rasa Trial

The story behind Tabula Rasa is certainly not original: alien race invades Earth; Earth is in danger; you're the only one who can save Earth from ultimate disaster.

Leaving simple plots aside, the truth is that Tabula Rasa is a must-have for RPG lovers. It's role-playing at its finest, a state-of-the-art adventure with a huge universe to explore and of course, lots of action. Because RPG is not only about learning professions and casting spells!

Tabula Rasa is set in a somewhat catastrophic future, right in the middle of a war between humans and the invading alien race, the Bane. As part of the human army, you'll have to fight against all sorts of alien creatures and step by step, regain control of your dear old planet.

Like in any other RPG game, Tabula Rasa is heavily based on quests: missions in which you're given a certain objective and for which you're properly rewarded. As you progress through missions and kill enemies, your character will earn experience points and go up levels.

The good thing about Tabula Rasa is that in spite of being an RPG game – which could make you think it's all about rolling dice – it has loads of action, battles, very realistic explosions and a wide array of weapons to choose from.

Another thing I especially liked about Tabula Rasa is the fact that it runs quite smoothly, despite its high system requirements. Tabula Rasa uses the standard RPG keyboard combination (WASD) plus mouse, so that you'll get used to it in a couple of minutes, and the game's graphics are simply gorgeous.

Tabula Rasa takes you to a violent, uncertain future in which fighing a dangerous alien invasion is your only way to survival.

Download Tabula Rasa Trial in Softonic

Wazzal is set in the year 2314, when the human race has expanded to some other planets in the Solar System and you work as part of the crew in a cargo spaceship. When war breaks out, it's your turn to take control of the ship and fight for survival as a space pirate.

Your overall aim in Wazzal is to gather a complete fleet of ships so that you can defeat more powerful enemies. You'll be assigned different missions, usually involving traveling from one planet to another, meeting other people and eventually engaging in space battles.

Despite this original plot, I found Wazzal to be a bit disappointing, especially the graphics, which are not as good as I expected. Also, gameplay in Wazzal is so different from other games it makes it really difficult to control the spaceship.

Katakijin is perfect for taking a break during work and have some easy fun fighting any enemies you stumble upon in the most authentic ninja style. The game doesn't have realistic graphics at all; on the contrary, it reminds me of those good old arcades we used to play 15 years ago, because it mixes elements of platform games with side-scrolling games.

This graphic simplicity doesn't mean Katakijin is a bad game. In a way it makes it even more attractive. Also, don't let yourself be fooled by the game's apparent plainness: it can be more difficult that it seems. Your character, a small ninja, has to make his way through endless levels full of enemies and other obstacles you must overcome with your special ninja movements and weapons. And when you find two or three enemies together, you have to work hard to beat them up!

Now is your chance to bring those sweet childhood memories back and pretend you're a pirate, though this time the game takes place in your web browser and you have to compete against other players from all over the world.

Seafight is an original RPG online game, both in its main plot and its general concept. On the one hand, unlike other role-playing adventures, Seafight is set in a pirate environment, with sea battles, cannons, treasure islands and mercenaries drinking rum in the pub while they wait to be hired for their next adventure. On the other hand, the whole game is played online, on the Seafight website, without having to install anything; a quick, free user registration will do.

As for the game itself, despite its originality, I must say it's a bit disappointing. Maybe I imagined something different and therefore Seafight fell short of my expectations, but the overall impression is one of confusion and network issues. The interface is cluttered with images and graphics, which is probably why the pages take a while to load. Also, I lost connection to the server a few times while testing the game, something I found disappointing.

Other than that, I thought the pirate environment was quite appealing. I also liked other features such as online combats with other players, quests to improve your experience level and the possibility to customize your equipment by buying or upgrading ships, acquiring new weapons or hiring your crew. If Seafight could improve its interface and fix connectivity issues, I'm sure it would be a great game.

Tetro Challenge is a remake of the popular Russian puzzle that features the same playability and addiction level as the original game. In fact I've had to force myself into writing this review before spending too much time testing it!

This colorful Blocks clone features several different gaming modes (Challenge, Destroyer, Panic and Bricklayer), a decent soundtrack and sound effects and quite a few challenges to keep you hooked for a while during a pause from work. So, depending on the type of game you choose, you'll have to fight against extra blocks, weirdly shaped pieces and other obstacles.

On the downside, I missed having two ways to rotate bricks like in the original game (in Tetro Challenge you have to choose between clockwise or counter-clockwise). Also, I didn't like the fact that the game opens up its own website every time you play it.

Despite these minor flaws, Tetro Challenge is a very entertaining, decent puzzle game that will keep you amused for hours.

Download Tetro Challenge 1.0 in Softonic

In fact it's quite original, that is, for a racing game.

Death Track: Resurrection is not just about racing down all the tracks in the game and trying to arrive first to the finishing line; it's also about fighting against the other drivers and trying to stay alive in an action-packed race where the first prize is simply survival.

The game lets you choose between several cars and also features a wide range of weapons, though the demo doesn't include them. There are also different gaming modes, but only Challenge and Quick Race modes are available in this demo.

As for gameplay, Death Track: Resurrection is quite easy to control: the four arrow keys to manage your car plus two more keys to shoot against other players. In a way it's a good thing that the car is easy to control, as you also need to concentrate on shooting and gathering all the power-ups scattered along the track. The physics engine is not great - especially when it comes to car damage – but the game's general setting in a somewhat futuristic city looks great: all those gray buildings with huge ads reminded me of Blade Runner. Pity the tracks are so incredibly long: each lap takes years to complete.

Instead, pilots used old planes and machine guns, and needed to be really quick and skillful if they wanted to survive.

This is precisely the setting you'll find in Aeronauts, a fun online game in which you'll engage in fierce air battles against people from all over the world. Before that, however, you'll need to go through a series of lengthy tutorials which, although a bit boring, are absolutely necessary if you want to master your plane's movements, tricks and special twirls – something that will prove essential to achieve victory.

The game can be controlled either with the keyboard of the mouse. I personally prefer the latter, but you can choose whichever suits you best. The good thing is that you're given the opportunity to test both controlling methods before making up your mind.

Being an online game, Aeronaut has a heavy social component. Too bad we couldn't fully test online characteristics due to the game's frequent connection issues – probably to be blamed on our side though. An even more interesting feature is the possibility to customize both your pilot and your plane with nicer apparel, more powerful weapons or even new skills.

Aeronauts features attractive graphics, not in a realistic style though, but following a more cartoonish style instead. Music adds the final touch to a game that, despite being difficult to control at the beginning, is really fun to play.

Paintown is an open-source project that will brings many sweet memories back to you – that is, if you ever played that kind of games. It's a side-scrolling fighting game that follows the style of all those good ol' popular fighting arcades. The good thing is that, being open source, you don't have to spend your quarters to play Paintown.

That said, don't expect too much from it, especially as regards graphics. Both characters and backgrounds are very pixelated but at the same time this is precisely what gives the game that sweet retro look. This time it's not just Dante (the original protagonist), but two people instead: the aforementioned Dante and also Nero, who appears in this demo and has nothing to do with the CD burning tool.

The game's objectives involve completing several missions, gathering objects and of course, killing all the evil creatures you'll find on your way to the final boss. And the best part in the game is precisely these fights against demons, monsters and other strange living beings. Being a hack and slash adventure, Devil May Cry 4 focuses on close combats and enables you to perform extraordinary movements and incredible combos with your sword and a new powerful weapon, the Devil Bringer. Plus, battles feature a hard-beating background music that reminds me of the Blade original soundtrack and which only make them more exciting.

The graphics in Devil May Cry are impressive. I tested the game on a Vista machine with DirectX 10, and I can tell the game makes the most of the computer's resources, rendering beautiful landscapes, realistic light effects and smooth movements.

On the downside we find game's controls. You can really tell this game was originally developed for consoles, because it's really hard to control it with a keyboard. If you have a gamepad you can plug into your PC, I'd recommend using it even if it's only to test the demo.

It was also probably the first 2D title to that succeeded in simulating a 3D experience. In the late 80s, the game seemed so realistic that people thought it was unsuitable for younger players. Looking at it now, surely you wouldn’t say it is ‘realistic’, but you can still say it’s really violent. The final attacks, called ‘fatality’ or ‘brutality,’ definitely fit into this back this up.

In the third version of Mortal Kombat, the 'Ultimate' one, you can choose between 24 characters, each with their own special moves. To configure the keys you’d like to use, go to the Options > Set Config > Controllers menu; at this point, choose '6btn Pad' in the Port1 line and click Define. Now press the keys you would like to use to jump, move right, left, punch and kick by following the directions you see at the bottom of the frame.

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures Demo

There's only a week left until Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull hits cinemas worldwide, a moment all true Indy fans like me have been desperately waiting for. If you're also among them, let me show you a trick to relieve your Indiana Jones anxiety: play the videogame!

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is an original mix-up of the three previous Indy movies (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), turned into a fun 3D platform adventure with some mind-twisting puzzles and a very unusual element: it's all made of Lego blocks.

This means that all characters, enemies and objects you'll find along the game are Lego style, which sometimes makes the game simply hilarious. You can for example build necessary elements - such a bridge to cross over a gap - out of a bunch of Lego pieces. Also, when you kill enemies or destroy objects with your whip, they're all torn down to Lego blocks. Backgrounds are the only thing in the game that don't follow the Lego style and have been created in a 3D style instead.

Despite being made of Lego, Indy is quick and agile. You can jump from one platform to another, fly over deep cliffs with your whip and avoid all sorts of obstacles quite easily. What's more, the game lets you carry two simultaneous characters (Indy and his friend) and change between them at any time, depending on what you need to do (remember: Indy doesn't have a shovel, but his friend does!).

Be aware though that the game is not just about jumping platforms and using your whip like Tarzan's vines. You'll have to solve various riddles and puzzles in order to gain access to certain areas during your adventures. The game's also quite easy to control, even if you're not very skillful with platforms, though I missed having a bit more control over the camera.

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is an hilarious 3D platform game which will let any Indy fan relive the most famous movie scenes featuring their favorite archaeologist.

Download LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures Demo in Softonic

Street Fighter 2 Plus Champion Edition

For all Street Fighter II lovers, here’s the Plus Champion Edition version of the most famous fighting game of all time, now available for Windows. While other editions of Street Fighter have often required extra emulators to run, as well as losing some of the feel of the original game, this one retains all the original gameplay and graphics, and all from just one file. You can even add a 'scan lines' effect by pressing Alt-4 or selecting the option in the Video menu.

With the Champion Edition you can choose between the eight original characters plus the four special ones you meet towards the end of your adventure: Balrog, Sagat, Vega and M. Bison. There are some mistakes here with the names as the Spanish fighter is Vega, the boxer Balrog and the captain M. Bison, but in this emulation, the names are all mixed-up.

To set the keys you prefer in order to play, go to the Option > Set Config > Controllers menu; at this point, choose '6btn Pad' in the Port1 line and click Define. Now press the keys you would like to use to jump, move right, left, punch and kick by following the direction you see at the bottom of the frame. Now you're all set to enjoy the tournament.

Revisit the action with your favorite characters from Street Fighter in this faithful version of the original Capcom game.

Download Street Fighter 2 Plus Champion Edition in Softonic

Frozzd

This is one of those indie games you find especially attractive, either because it's fun to play, or because it has cute graphics, or because it reminds you of other games you like, or just for all these reasons at the same time.

Frozzd will immediately remind you of Super Mario Galaxy, always keeping in mind that we're comparing Nintendo to an independent game developer. Your objective in Frozzd consists on flying from one planet to another, rescuing a bunch of sweet creatures called mubblies from freezing to death.

You'll have to explore planets on each level, collect all the mubblies you can find and fight any enemies you face. But your best ally will be gravity, which will help you to move around space and jump safely from one planet to another. The game's twelve levels are not very hard to play and can be easily completed, something that makes of Frozzd a great pastime for work breaks.

A simple, nice game based on Super Mario Galaxy that you can play during your coffee break.

Download Frozzd in Softonic

Freeciv 2.1.4

Freeciv is a free turn-based multiplayer strategy game, in which each player becomes the leader of a civilization, fighting to obtain the ultimate goal:To become the greatest civilization. Freeciv is maintained by an international team of coders and enthusiasts, and is easily one of the most fun and addictive network games out there! That also means it has very extensive multilanguage support, something rare in games.

The goal of Freeciv is to build cities, which in turn can build armies to attack the other players. You start with 2 settlers and 1 explorer. Using the numeric keypad, move the settlers to a good location and build a city by pressing b (for build). Freeciv is turn based; every unit can move once per turn.

Cities also produce units, which can be used for various purposes, from fighting wars to enhancing infrastructure. Different strategies depend on different focuses between things external and internal to a city.

The eventual goal of the game is to win either by using military units to conquer all opposing civilizations, or by using massive scientific knowledge and production to build a spaceship to send to Alpha Centauri before your rivals can do so.

Download Freeciv 2.1.4 in Softonic

Teeworlds 0.4.2

In terms of originality, Teeworlds scores top marks. if you combined Hello Kitty with Kirby's Dreamland and Quake III, then you'd get somewhere close to the concept.

You can choose from 17 character designs and fight against one or more persons in the different scenarios available through LAN or the Internet. The latest release also incorporates "fair" player spawning, the ability to kick players, and a very cute welcome screen to encourage players to set their names and favorite settings before playing their first game. The game has quite a few similarities to the Worms series of games, with the big exception that Teeworlds is played in real-time, while Worms is turn based.

The game is played using both mouse and keyboard - A/D moves your "Tee" left and right, W/spacebar makes it jump, and the mouse is used to aim and fire. Right-clicking launches a grappling hook, which can be used to move around the map quickly, and also grab other players. The game is so far free-for-all only, but a Capture the flag mode seems to be in the works. The problem comes if you try to set up your own server to play against a friend though - it's immensely complicated but there is an FAQ to help you through.

Fun, action packed and easy to play - if only Teeworlds was easier to play against others over the net, it would be even better.

Download Teeworlds 0.4.2 in Softonic

Dragon Ball Z Budokai X 2.0

If you were a fan of Dragon Ball Z then Dragon Ball Z Budokai takes it to a new level with added acrobatic 3D action.

Dragon Ball Z Budokai features over 100 DBZ heroes and villains and an added story mode for extra depth. The games allows you to recreate classic scenes from the TV show in story mode with some lightning-fast fighting moves and the ability to engage in titanic battles. There are around 15 3D scenarios and much improved graphics, levels and special moves. The game uses a "behind-the-back" camera perspective and features all the regular Dragon Ball Z power ups and bonuses.

Players can build up their "Ki" bar to execute various techniques such as the Power Guard, which reduces the damage characters take by 1/4. The Ki bar can also be used to use moves referred to as Blast 2s plus many more death defying moves which can snap your opponents neck in the blink of an eye.

For those that enjoy a good old punch-up, this is a great game although it could do with a few more characters and moves.

Download Dragon Ball Z Budokai X 2.0 in Softonic
