The battle against telepathic monsters

In Metro: Last Light, you'll play Artyom. The action is interspersed with dialogue that provides you with more information. You'll have 3 weapons to start with, and, as the game progresses, you can build on this arsenal by exchanging ammunition, which serves as the game's currency.

Metro: Last Light is linear and you don't have much freedom to explore. In fact, your biggest choices will probably revolve around whether to attack your enemies rambo-style, or stealthily, under the cover of darkness.

Traditional 1st person shooter

Metro: Last Light is a straight-up first person shooter where you move with the keyboard and mouse and see the action from your character's viewpoint. You can also use a gamepad to play. Pressing the button will allow you to light a torch, which will help keep your photosensitive enemies at bay.

Depending on the situation, you'll need to try different techniques when fighting. Lots of times, you'll find that a stealthy approach will let you sneak up on enemies, saving ammo and avoiding detection in one fell swoop.

In order to survive above ground, you'll need to use a gas mask. Keep an eye out though, because the mask's filter can become blocked, or the eye piece will cloud over with contamination. If either of these scenarios come to pass, it could lead to your demise.

Unnervingly beautiful graphics

The tragedy and pain of the story behind Metro: Last Light is clearly and perfectly reflected in the graphics. Faces are lined with pain and sync crisply with dialogue. The landscape of the decimated world and murky underground are patent and palpable - chipped tiles, rusty pipes, dirty stations and scurrying rats.

Everything in Metro: Last Light is beautifully fluid. The "camera" moves between fights and panorama seamlessly, the music changes from scene to scene, moving from lighthearted excitement to terror and doom. It really is a pleasure to look at.

An exciting stealth terror shooter

Metro: Last Light doesn't do things by halves. The hideous mutants, macabre surprises, creepy atmosphere and awesome soundtrack make for a game that is nothing short of memorable.

We've taken points off for the lack of a co-op mode, which would have been easy to implement. In a sentence, Metro: Last Light is solid - and solitary - entertainment, but lacks re-playability.

A terrifying alternative world

Metro: Last Light is set in a barren wasteland, where Nazi Germany rules and everybody else has been forced below ground. The only people who can survive above ground must wear special breathing equipment, while everybody else takes refuge in subway station townships.

The Metro: Last Light world is beset with mutants and a new race of telepathic humanoids, and it is among them that you must fight. The storyline is loosely based on the novel Metro 1033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Fight with style

After gunning your way through the Warframe tutorial, it's time to choose your character. There are 3 available in this beta version - Excalibur, Loki and Volt, but the final version will have 12 characters to choose from!

The character you choose will change the way you look and your fighting style. All characters have access to guns and assault rifles, but each class of fighter also has its own arsenal. Excalibur, for example, is a balanced fighter that can take advantage of throwing weapons, while Loki deceives and confuses enemies.

Players select their missions on a map. As you gain experience, you'll unlock new areas and missions. One of Warframe's main features is a system that automatically selects 3 partners to help you while you complete these missions. If Warframe can't find suitable partners, you can go it alone or invite your friends to play.

In Warframe, you play against enemy AI, and missions are pretty similar: rescue the characters, destroy the reactors, and shoot as many aliens as you can on the way. When you complete a mission, you'll get points to spend on weapons and skills. If they're not racking up as fast as you'd like, you can always get your credit card out to purchase items and currency.

Responsive handling, vicious enemies

As in Mass Effect, the camera naturally rests behind your character's shoulder, but you can change that with the mouse. In general, Warframe's controls are smooth and effective, allowing you to shoot and aim without problem.

Warframe's AI enemies are pretty convincing and fight viciously. That said, they don't attempt to get the better of you, which means their behavior soon becomes pretty predictable.

When you're under fire, you can take cover behind walls and pillars. Each character has a shield that can take light damage, but if you take too much damage, you'll collapse and your teammates will have to rescue you. If they don't make it in time, you can choose to revive yourself, but this option is limited, so use it carefully!

Slick, fliud graphics

Even when we played Warframe in high resolution, we didn't notice any slip in graphics or redering. Characters look good, and movement is generally fluid, although we did notice a little jerkiness while running.

Warframe environments are a little boring. Even when players move though areas, they all look more or less the same with the exception of some slight color changes. Characters stick out though, and their styling made us think of Tron. We also thought the music was a great fit for the game.

Solid gameplay, but a lack of variety

Warframe is a good game and a solid action offering. Battles are fast and furious and the graphics are good. Plus,the cooperative gameplay should keep you entertained for hours, as long as you can find allies and aren't put off by the repetitiveness.

Warframe's developers are good about adding content and updating the game, and the final version should be very good indeed. Currently, it's still very fun and should appeal to action fans everywhere.

A co-op adventure

Kirk and Spock co-operate in the game, which sees you crawling through air ducts and broken doors to tackle marauding hoards of aliens. The missions are similar to the ones seen in the movie, so you'll find a good variety of both planets and battles.

The Star Trek gameplay is strictly linear, but you'll still need a bit of logical thinking to search for clues and solve puzzles. A tool that you'll find indispensable, the tricoder, can be obtained by finding hidden objects, for example.

You can play Star Trek as either the Vulcan Spock or wise Captain Kirk. You can't change character while you're playing, but you can invite other players to the game online, and they can choose the other character. If either Spock or Kirk falls in battle, the other can revive him and only when you're both dead does the game end.

Acceptable controls

To control characters in Star Trek, you use the mouse and keyboard, and we found it pretty much ok for most of the game. In battle, however, the controls seemed a little clunkier.

Great soundtrack, ok graphics

We liked Star Trek's spaceships, which are detailed and well-reconstructed. We weren't so keen on the rest of the graphics though, as they seemed a little weak and one-dimensional.

The soundtrack was also a plus. It represents the spirit of the films and series perfectly, and totally transports you to the Star Trek of old.

Not just for Star Trek fans

Fans of the series will love this game. It's solid and will totally immerse you in the world of Star Trek. While we have to admit that the game's not the most impressive we've ever seen, the storytelling, soundtrack and general feel of the game means that lots of gamers, whether fans or not, will enjoy it.

Your overall goal is to make money which you can invest in improving your farm. The improved graphics are still more functional than realistic - vehicles only leave a mark on the ground when you are ploughing etc. The farming equipment, from real manufacturers like Case IH, Deutz-Fahr, Lamborghini, Same, Horsch and Amazone, are as slow as you would expect, but don't feel realistic.

You can crash your tractor into a barn without damaging it either. The environment in general still feels stale. For a simulator about farming, a more dynamic environment would be much more suitable. As it stands, work in Farming Simulator 2013 is pretty dull. You'll never feel you are fighting against the elements, but rather just going through the motions.

Farming Simulator 2013 isn't a massive improvement for the series. The graphics still look out dated, and the overall experience is lacking character. If you enjoyed previous entries, you'll like this, but it doesn't offer much for anyone else.

Multiplayer lets the game down

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is not a subtle game. The story is silly, but takes you through lush jungles, to Sarajevo and mountains in Tibet. Some segments see you working with a Spotter, or supporting another team. In these parts you are guided through where to look and who to kill. How hard this is depends on the setting. Medium difficulty gives you a red dot that helps you allow for distance and wind when shooting, but this is removed on Hard.

The multiplayer portion is small. It sets two teams up sniping against each other. This makes game pretty quiet, as searching for other snipers is a slow, painstaking process. There really needed to be more creative game modes to make multiplayer worthwhile in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2.

Playability

The controls are well handled. You can hold your breath, which momentarily slows time, allowing you to take a more accurate shot, and in general it plays like a standard first person shooter. The night and infrared vision modes are well done, but you rarely need to use them creatively.

While it never reaches Dishonored or Hitman levels, there is a puzzle element to watching and learning soldiers' movements, and it's fun to get through a level undetected. The good looking environments don't allow for much exploration, and there isn't the same level of fascinating detail like there was in Dishonored.

Quality

Enemy AI can be a little hard to predict. When you're sniping from a great distance, and being guided by your team, this isn't a problem. When you're fighting on your own, deciding which enemies to take down first doesn't always give you predictable results. If you are detected and rushed by a few soldiers, you will find the pistol woefully underpowered to protect yourself! You can take out an enemy very close to another without problem sometimes, but if you miss, generally you'll alert everyone to your position. But not always...

Conclusion

Apart from the dodgy AI, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is an enjoyable, if short, sniping adventure. It doesn't have the gory bullet cam of Sniper Elite:V2, but it's still a solid sniper game.

To help The Walking Dead game feel more like the comic series that is it based off of, Telltale has chose to use a cartoon, cell-shaded art style as well as releasing the game in five episodes. Both of these details definitely helped to make The Walking Dead feel like you're playing an interactive comic book.

The Walking Dead focuses around dialog choices. Players are given a limited amount of time to choose between several dialogs choices, similar to Mass Effect's dialog system, except Mass Effect doesn't have a time limit. By introducing a time limit, players feel a sense of urgency and will hopefully answer more candidly. The Walking Dead allows you to portray the main character, Lee Everett, as a misunderstood or amoral man.

There are also quick time events throughout the game that add to the tension. The Walking Dead includes sequences where you have to rapidly tap a button to fight off an enemy as well as sequences where you have to quickly take down zombies by clicking on them. The Walking Dead was never made to be a shooter so some of the gun play and even walking around featured some clunky controls when playing with a mouse and keyboard.

The story in The Walking Dead is absolutely engrossing, bolstered by great voice acting and character models. While the graphics in The Walking Dead aren't the most advanced, its cell shaded art style brings the comic book characters to life with vivid colors and hard brush strokes. You really care about each of the characters in your group. There are also some great villains in the game that do some shocking things.

Since there are so many choices a player can make in The Walking Dead, your friends playing the same game will most likely have different stories than you. This gives The Walking Dead some stellar replay value. At the end of each episode, you're given a report on how your choices coincide with other Walking Dead players.

The story builds up to a nail-biting climax, albeit a short one. Since The Walking Dead is so good at making you care for the characters in your group, finding out the fate of Clementine and Lee will leave you breathless. Some players have complained about the ending but I think it was beautifully done and goes along with the themes presented in the game.

TellTale Games has done right by The Walking Dead franchise with an engrossing storyline that provides a parallel to the comic. This game is a terrific value and is one of the best games of 2012.

This is a fan created game, officially supported by Capcom. Seow Zong Hui from Singapore created this retro platformer as a tribute, with a soundtrack provided by Luke Esquivel. You control Mega Man over a series of tough levels that climax with a face-off against one of the Street Fighter characters. Like a classic NES game, it's fast and uncompromisingly tough. If you die, it's back to the start of the level, 80s style. No save points here.

You can play with keyboard or a gamepad - Street Fighter X Mega Man will recognize a gamepad as long as it's connected when you start the game. Controls are faithful to Mega Man, with jumps, slides and weapons all working as they should. Unlike the old Mega Man games, there's no save or password system, so if you want to beat the game you have to do it on one go. Combined with the overall toughness of Street Fighter X Mega Man, this makes for a really tough game. Enemies range from difficult to very difficult, and the Street Fighter bosses even more so. You'll need all your retro skills to complete this.

The graphics and music are lovingly done, with each level based on a Street Fighter theme. The 8-bit versions of the Street Fighter characters look great, although you may be too busy trying to avoid them to notice! The soundtrack sounds just right for this retro tribute too.

This is a fan-made game, so it's hard to judge against 'professiona' titles. However, the recent glut of great indie retro platformers, like VVVVVV or even Cave Story, have shown that you don't need a big team to create a great game that's tough without being unfair. Street Fighter X Mega Man really needs a save feature, and the README instructions should have more guidance about which order to attempt the levels.

There's no doubting the love that went into Street Fighter X Mega Man, but it even makes famously unfair platformers like Ghouls and Ghosts seem tough! However, it's lots of fun, and fans of both franchises will enjoy this free challenge.

But in creating a fantastic and cinematic action game, the developers have lost Dead Space's defining elements: horror and surprise. Dead Space 3 is still great, but it may disappoint fans looking for a terrifying experience.

Dead Space 3 continues the story of Isaac Clarke, and delves a little deeper into his character, exposing more of his fears, motivations and personality. Isaac is much easier to empathize with throughout this game.

There are new monsters to fight, and varied locations, as the action moves from Earth to a frozen planed called Tau Volantis. As well as the action-horror, there are simple puzzles to solve, and even some mountain climbing. The controls are exceptional throughout, and it's never boring, even if it lacks the tension of the previous games.

Dead Space 3's story is excellent, and unlike Mass Effect 3, it has comes to a satisfying conclusion. If you're looking for a big sci-fi action game, this is one of the best.

The game client, is a bit clunky - you cannot choose to save your login details or region, for example, which is annoying. From there, you have a pretty complex interface where you can purchase items, read messages and more.
You have to find your game here too, and amongst the plethora of buttons, there is a quick play option that drops you right into a game.

The debt to Counter-Strike in Arctic Combat is clear, but it lacks the balance and careful tuning that CS:GO has. Graphically it's very average, although that means you can run it on almost anything. The free-to-play model means you can find yourself outgunned by other, more experienced or richer players. I found that well aimed headshots with weaker weapons simply didn't work, which is a sign of Arctic Combat's poorly designed free to play model.

First experiences with online shooters are often demoralizing, but you expect things to improve once you have learned the maps. Arctic Combat is simply to generic and unbalanced. Free to play FPS games are common now, and we'd recommend PlanetSide 2, Tribes: Ascend or even District 187 over this very bland offering.

The second game in a planned trilogy, Chaos on Deponia follows the exploits of Rufus fighting to save his scrapyard world of Deponia. The game has a beautifully drawn world, and characters are really well animated throughout. It's fully voice acted, and the whole script is stuffed with jokes.

The gameplay in Chaos on Deponia is the same point-and-click style that was popularized in the 90s. You move the story on by solving puzzles, which you solve by interacting with and combining various objects on screen. True to the genre, the backgrounds are largely static, while only characters are animated. You can highlight everything you can use in an area by hitting the space bar, which is very useful. Solving puzzles can sometimes feel very trial and error, instead of being logical. This is quite normal for point and click adventures, but it's still annoying.

The humor is constant in Chaos on Deponia. It's not the most complex humor, relying on slapstick and schoolyard techniques. After a while this can get tiresome, and Rufus, our hero, becomes hard to like. Hopefully in the next Deponia game, the writers will resist the temptation to put a joke in every line. Despite this, it's impossible not to be impressed with the detail and effort that's been put into Chaos on Deponia.

Chaos on Deponia is a really well made point-and-click game. It's one of the best looking point and click games you'll play, and it's bigger and better than its prequel.
