With more than 28,000 recipe entries, Epicurious has quite an extensive inventory of instructions on how to cook a variety of foods. It even has an international inventory of recipes. If you want to give that dish from your favorite Indian restaurant a try, for example, Epicurious might just have it on file.

In addition to having an extensive selection, Epicurious categorizes its recipes to make dishes easy to search. During the holidays, there are even appropriately specific categories like holiday sides and Christmas cocktails. If you find a recipe you love or simply want to try, you can place it into a favorites folder for easy access as well. There's also a regular search screen to type in your query if you can't find what you want via Epicurious's pre-made categories.

Epicurious is truly a useful resource for a cook or those who aspire to be one. The only frustrating feature becomes clear after you use the app for a while. On occasion, notifications pop up, inviting you to sync your favorites so you can share them between devices. This is great if it's something you want to do. If not, there's no way to stop the notifications from appearing from time to time, which can get annoying.

Overall, Epicurious is a fantastic recipe app for food lovers of all types of cuisine.

Easy install

uTorrent Remote for Android is a tiny download that won't take up much space on your device's memory. Once it's on your phone, you'll have to open up the desktop client for Mac or PC and set up an account from there - the app doesn't allow you to do this from your mobile device. Located under the "preferences" options, signing up is as easy as choosing a computer name and password. Then open up the uTorrent Remote app on your phone, and you'll be able to control all your torrents remotely.

User-friendly interface

Once inside the app, you'll see that it's very easy to use. Although the uTorrent Remote for Android is simplified, it's still very understandable at first glance. You'll quickly see what's downloading, seeding and completed, as well as your labels and feeds. Clicking on any of the categories will show you the files currently in action, and clicking on any of the files will let you see more details. Of course, uTorrent Remote has clear and simple buttons to pause, delete or view the individual files of any download.

Features

From your menu button, you'll be able to manage additional tasks with uTorrent Remote. Adding the URL of a torrent or feed is achieved via Add, while you can also view local files and logout. uTorrent Remote's settings on your actual Android device are pretty limited, but bear in mind that most of the tweaking will be achieved via the desktop client, so the Android settings don't need to be too advanced. You can, however, limit uTorrent's upload and download speeds, and enable or disable downloads to your phone over 2G and 3G.

A small issue

We only had one issue with uTorrent Remote - it proved to be very buggy at times. This can be frustrating, but was usually remedied by logging in and out of the various clients a few times. Also bear in mind that your home PC or Mac must be on with uTorrent running for the app to work.

Working with Astro File Manager is a joy thanks to the program's clear, customizable user interface. It allows you to perform a wide variety of tasks via a sliding toolbar at the top of the screen. The main window shows you all of the folders on your system and perusing the files in these folders is made easy by the inclusion of Up, Back and Next buttons to navigate through the directories.

Astro File Manager lets you choose to view files and folders either in traditional list format, or as icons, which feels a lot more like the Windows Explorer. Files and folders can be sorted by name, date, size or type. Astro File Manager also includes a reliable search tool for quickly finding a specific file.

Among Astro File Manager's other features are its ability to open ZIP and TAR compressed files, although the app doesn't currently support RAR files, which is a bit of a shame.

Manage your apps

Astro File Manager comes with a very handy application manager and backup tool. Here you can view a list of all your installed apps, then choose to uninstall them or back them up to your SD card at the tap of a button. There's also a process manager, where you can view currently-running apps, services and process, and kill them instantly if you wish.

You'll find a wealth of preferences within Astro File Manager that make managing your files all the easier. you can customize the toolbar, set your preferred home directory, edit file extensions, enable/disable browser downloads, and clear the internal caches in your Android phone.

Astro File Manager is arguably the best file management app for Android, and it gives you a lot more control over your device.

xScope Browser - Web & File is also a file explorer, saving you from installing a separate app like Astro for examining your files. From an aesthetic point of view, xScope Browser - Web & File is modern, slick and skinnable, but you'll have to download the extra themes separately.

Using the browser - and tabbed browsing - is especially comfortable when you hold the phone horizontally, although anyone with fat finger syndrome might struggle with both tabs and options.

Although xScope Browser - Web & File boasts a file explorer, we have to admit that it's not the most impressive. While it might sometimes be handy to take a look at your files from inside your browser, the feature isn't very flexible, simply allowing you to browse, copy and send. If you're looking to do any real file management, we recommend that you look elsewhere.

In all xScope Browser - Web & File is a nice app. While it won't be knocking apps like Dolphin or Miren off their thrones, it's a very usable option and well worth a look if other browsers aren't to your liking. It's easy to use, has plenty of options and the file explorer is a nice touch - as long as you aren't looking for serious power.

While not the strongest contender in the Android browser pack, xScope Browser - Web & File is a very decent option.

One of the great things about UberSocial is the amount of customization it gives you. There are options for adjusting the way you are notified of new tweets, along with a series of in-depth display and URL-shortening options.

Another great feature of this latest version of UberSocial is Live Preview. Turn your Android device on its side and a new kind of display will appear. Here you can view new tweets in a panel on the left, and a preview of any web pages linked to in the larger pane next to it.

UberSocial is an excellent Twitter client for Android, and one that gives you a great deal of control over your Twitter experience.

The idea behind Evernote is that you can save text, voice notes, images and other files using your phone, then access this information on your home computer or, indeed, any computer in the world. Equally, thanks to this online sharing approach, you can use the Evernote app to view notes you've made elsewhere.

Everything about Evernote is based around simplicity. The user interface of the app is clean and functional, making it easy for you to add and retrieve notes. Buttons on the home screen allow you to capture images and attach them on the fly, upload files, write text notes, and add audio notes.

Tagging and searching

Any note you add in Evernote can be tagged with your own custom tags, making it easier to access in future. The Evernote Android app lets you browse notes by tag, or you can use the powerful search tool, which not only browses text notes, but can even search text that's contained within images.

As useful as it is, the Evernote Android app is far from perfect at the moment. It doesn't save data locally, only to SD card; you always need to be connected and signed in to use it, and sometimes Evernote is very slow, taking an age to load notes. Hopefully these features will be addressed in future releases.

As it stands, Evernote does offer a fast and easy way of taking notes on your phone, then accessing them elsewhere.

The quality of the streaming music can be changed within the options as well as streaming via Wi-Fi only. The streaming quality of Google Music is impressive. There were no issues playing high quality 320 kbps songs.

SkyDrive gives you 25Gb of free space to save files such as images, videos and documents. The SkyDrive app allows you to access your files from your Windows Phone 7 device quickly and easily. Simply sign in with your SkyDrive account details and you'll have access to everything you've saved online.

The elegant user interface in the SkyDrive app is divided into three sections that you can swipe through effortlessly. You can view all files and folders, recently uploaded ones, or shared ones. There's also an option to view files in list format or in icon view.

View uploaded files on your phone

Besides giving you the ability to instantly upload files from your Windows Phone to SkyDrive, the application allows you to view files you've already uploaded. For example, you can click on an image to open it fullscreen, then choose to save it to your device memory or SD card. You can swipe through images to flick through an album, though there's no slideshow option.

As well as viewing images, you can also access other kinds of file on SkyDrive, such as Office documents and videos. Again these can be downloaded to your device, too.

Viewing problems

In our tests on an LG Optimus we had trouble viewing some documents, and SkyDrive threw up an error, rather than opening the document in the native Office app for Windows Phone. This seemed to occur especially with OneNote documents, but luckily there is a workaround for this. We also had problems opening certain video files, too. Hopefully these issues will be fixed in future releases of SkyDrive.

If you want a way to store files online and access them on your mobile device, SkyDrive is an attractive choice.

4shared Mobile for Android is similar to other file storage services like Dropbox in that it gives you a way to store files and access them across multiple devices. This includes on a Windows PC, Mac and even a web-based app.

4shared Mobile for Android seems to be an old name for the currently revamped desktop and web app called 4Sync. Although the names differ, these tools do all sync with one another and the names will presumably be changed to match sometime in the future to avoid further confusion.

Share photos, music, videos and other files with 4shared Mobile for Android. Setting up an account comes with 10GB of free storage space, and this gives you access to your web-based 4Sync account.

If you already have a 4Sync account, simply type in the email and password you set up then in order to access 4shared Mobile for Android. If this is your first time using 4shared Mobile for Android, input the email and password you want to link to your new account. These are the login credentials you'll use to access your content online via a web browser as well.

If you want an additional 5GB of free space, you'll want to log into the web-based version of 4Sync. On the bottom left of your account's main screen, simply click the blue button with the white plus sign that says "Get 5GB free." A verification link will be sent to the email address you provided. It's a little tedious, but definitely worth it for fifty percent more space to make use of.

4shared Mobile for Android is easy to use and navigate. You can organize your files into folders, just like on the desktop and web apps. Uploading files from your phone to 4shared Mobile for Android is also a simple process.

If you're looking for an alternative to Dropbox to store files and sync across devices, 4shared Mobile for Android is a great alternative, even if the Android app is thus far pretty bare.

Comic Zeal Comic Reader has a small learning curve to learn how to accurately use the app. Files are normally sorted by title and numerical series are combined into one folder. The app has trouble with non-standard text, and it is usually easier to extract and recombine files with a standard file name.

As image files are scaled to the screen, the featured pinch-to-zoom function is not normally needed. Even when some images are two pages, the page can be scaled to fit in portrait mode. Turning the iPad to landscape will also scale so both pages show.

While reading, Comic Zeal Comic Reader will open the next file in a series providing a seamless experience. The slider in Comic Zeal Comic Reader becomes the all-in-one tool. Moving files is simple: slide to the right and the file is moved into the slider. The file can then be moved to another folder, deleted, or added into a newly created folder.

The only annoying aspect of Comic Zeal Comic Reader is importing through iTunes, which is a two-step process with the files first being imported into the iPad and then imported into Comic Zeal Comic Reader. Larger files take more time and that can also affect the reading speed.

Comic Zeal Comic Reader is one of the best apps for reading comics and manga.

Not being able to easily store files was an early complaint about iPhones, but that's changed now, and you can transfer anything to and from your iPhone using the File Sharing area in iTunes. USB Disk is a neat little file manager that allows you to create folders, move files around and even view them. You can display spreadsheets, Word files, video and audio and more, without problems.

USB Disk comes with a welcome document, which you'll need in order to learn the interface, which would otherwise be unclear. However, it's actually easy to use once you know how. Drag files into iTunes, and they'll appear in USB Disk.

You can tap the file to copy it to a clipboard, then paste it into another folder, deleting the original. This isn't quite as neat as dragging and dropping files in the iPhone, but given the limited screen real estate, USB Disk is actually a pretty good solution.

USB Disk is a great little tool for file storage on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Once you've learned the controls, it becomes a really simple and well designed utility.

I love the fact that I can browse web pages on my mobile phone. However, being the intellectual fellow I am, I often like to read long scientific journal entries or pore over long-winded reports and lectures about modern technology. This causes a problem, in that it takes a long time to read them online and I don't want to stay connected too long. Of course, I could download and save the page, but this then puts a burden on my phone's memory.

Step forward iSilo, a sophisticated reader for viewing HTML documents and text files on your phone. The best thing about the software is that it uses a little trick to make these files as small as possible, saving you space on your device. With the help of its sister-Windows application iSiloX, the program converts documents originally saved as Web pages or text documents into TXT format.

As a pay off for the mighty compression rates offered by iSilo, you unfortunately lose some links in the conversion process. Some graphic formats aren't displayed properly when converted, but fonts and tables remain largely unaltered.

Aside from a few niggly display problems though, iSilo represents a great way of compressing HTML and text documents for viewing on your mobile device.
