ALLPlayer 5.2

ALLPlayer is a powerful media player that as the name suggests, can play just about any format.

Similar to <taglink type="program" country="en" id="25339">VLC media player</taglink>, ALLPlayer is ideal for playing stubborn video files that won't play in your usual video player. It supports subtitles and plays just about anything and if it can't play a file, it will try to download the appropriate codec from the ALLPlayer website. If you need subtitles for a film, it will even try and download those as well although this function is very hit and miss. An unusual subtitle feature is an automatic voice recognition system that actually reads the subtitles for those who are visually impaired although again, it's not very accurate.

However, one thing to be aware of is that ALLPlayer is based on DirectX which is notorious for being a backdoor for trojans and other malware. DirectX has been much improved and tightened-up since the bad old days though and this shouldn't be an overriding concern if you're thinking of using ALLPlayer.

There are tons of other features in ALLPlayer including an attractive iTunes style Coverflow browser, support for Dolby, and it even previews incomplete AVI files such as those that are downloading. The interface isn't as polished as VLC media player's version 2 release but this is a relatively minor drawback to a solid media player.

ALLPlayer is an excellent multi-format media player that's packed with features.

Download ALLPlayer 5.2 in Softonic

SRS Audio Essentials 1.0.45.0

SRS Audio Essentials is a software-based audio mixer that processes the audio stream from different file formats and enhances the sound in impressive ways.

The application offers six different preset modes from audio, movies, and gaming to external speakers, on-board speakers, and headphones. The different configurations create varied audio playback and some audio settings actually work better than their presets depending on what type of video is being watched.

SRS Audio Essentials is simple to use with the standard options, but the full version of SRS Audio Essentials features customizable sliders that affect the treble, bass, and sound dimensions. SRS Audio Essentials also features a simulated 5.1 surround sound option that can be used with most video playback.

But how did SRS Audio Essentials compare to the on-board audio?

SRS Audio Essentials was tested on an Alienware MX11 that uses Realtek High Definition Audio as the default audio processor. Two sets of headphones were used: Altec Lansing ear buds and WESC over-the-ear headphones.

Audio

With iTunes, four different songs from two different genres were tested. Hip-hop and rock music have comparable audio attributes, and the four songs chosen contain both a good amount of high and lows.

Across the board, SRS Audio Essentials beat Realtek High Definition Audio by producing a wider spectrum of sound and highlighting the higher pitches and solid lows. The hip-hop songs sounded heavier with the increased bass and the rock songs had new life brought to them with the percussion and smaller recorded sounds becoming more vibrant by SRS Audio Essentials.

Movies

For the video tests, Media Player Classic Home Cinema (in the K-Lite codec pack) and Windows Media Player were used to compare playback. SRS Audio Essentials is compatible with most media players and natively works with Windows Media Player while Media Player Classic had to be configured to recognize the program to process the sound.

Using three high definition music videos, SRS Audio Essentials again produced more impressive audio. Using two pop songs and one hip-hop song, SRS Audio Essentials was able to create a wider and more expansive sound. The pop song’s heavily layered instrumentals contained more depth while the vocals sounded much more natural and comprehensible. The hip-hop video played with an enjoyable amount of bass and the treble also presented small cues not heard with Realtek High Definition Audio.

The only problem with SRS Audio Essentials is that the presets do not work well with music video audio. In the case of both pop videos, there was a noticeable amount of cracking during playback that sat right behind the melody of the song and even adjusting the advanced option sliders did not remove the issue.

A dialogue-heavy movie was also tested and with presets (movie and headphones), the audio came across clean and audible. SRS Audio Essentials was also able to create more virtual surround with small background noise like crickets being easily heard. Considering the source was from DVD, it was impressive that SRS Audio Essentials processed the smaller noises not heard during playback.

Gaming

The Binding of Issac was tested with SRS Audio Essentials. Containing both an introduction containing lots of dialogue and the game containing a heavy soundtrack, it was the perfect game to test. Once again, SRS Audio Essentials bested Realtek High Definition Audio by expanding and improving on the experience of the game through the sound. In the simplest case: the game sounded a lot more epic.

Since SRS promotes SRS Audio Essentials as a program that is for music, movies, and games primarily; the testing of the three different types proved that SRS Audio Essentials is actually an essential add-on to anyone’s computer that does not contain a discrete soundcard.

While SRS Audio Essentials is not absolute perfection, it is the closest possibility through software.

Download SRS Audio Essentials 1.0.45.0 in Softonic

AV Music Morpher Gold is an audio editing application that allows you to add a multitude of effects to recordings. It also functions as a converter, CD ripper and player.

This is a piece of audio editing software that has many features, but it's not hard to use, especially as you can add and test effects in real time. AV Music Morpher Gold has lots of effects to explore, from the ridiculous like 'Merry Doggy' to the more useful like 'Reverb'. It's very easy to turn effects on and off, although timing can be tricky.

There's also a wave editor, so you can cut and join tracks. It's pretty basic, and not up to the standard of Audacity. The AV Music Morpher Gold interface is pretty simple, but has a very old fashioned skin. AV Music Morpher Gold really does look ten years old, and the lack of drag-and-drop support makes this feel even clunkier than it looks.

AV Music Morpher Gold does many things, but none of them well enough. There is much better DJ software available, much better music managers, and audio editors too. This jack of all trades applications needs more focus and an interface overhaul to bring it up to date.

If you're looking for a simple way to add strange effects to your music, AV Music Morpher Gold does just that. Unfortunately it's a bit too basic, and pretty ugly to boot!

Download AV Music Morpher Gold 5.0.57 in Softonic

FileCroc 1.0.1.3006

The hoo-hah surrounding the closure of Napster all those years ago now seems like a distant memory. At the time, users were literally crying that they would no longer be able to share files for nothing over the Internet. As it turned out, they needn't have worried because since then we've seen countless P2P clients come and go. Aside from being the world's first radio-enabled peer-to-peer software, FileCroc doesn't bring anything new to the table, however, it does combine a wealth of useful features with a smart GUI.

With shades of Ares about it, FileCroc works through a decentralised network with more than 50 million users, meaning that you invariably find what you're looking for and transfer times are pretty quick. It can even be used to download Torrent files, giving it extra bonus points in my book. Thanks to its drag-and-drop control method, it's dead easy to start sharing files with the program from the get-go.

Besides just giving you a platform to share files, FileCroc also includes a smart chat facility, with the ability to create your own rooms and host files within them. You also get a neat built-in player that lets you preview and play songs before they download. I've heard some grumblings before about an adware toolbar called 'Navelex,' which installs automatically with the client, but I found no sign of it in this version.

If you want a fully-featured P2P client with a fast search facility then FileCroc could be just the thing you're looking for.

Download FileCroc 1.0.1.3006 in Softonic

Rakion: Chaos Force

If you like a game that features lots of no-nonsense bloody action, then Rakion Chaos Force might be for you. It’s a combat action game set in a world where Dragons have pledged to rid the planet of the human race. Your task is to take on the beasts and monsters and ultimately slay the dragons once and for all – and spill a hell of a lot of blood along the way.

You take on the role of 5 different characters - Warrior, Blacksmith, Archer, Mage, and Ninja. All have their own individual strengths and weaknesses and two modes of attack: short-range and long-range. There are 4 different game modes - Solo Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Stage Mode, and Golem Wars. The Deathmatch mode sees you blow up everything and everyone in sight. You can also play it in a team online with friends. For each stage you advance to, you win more gold which you can trade for more powers, ranging from weapons and armour to even small Gremlin-like creatures known as “Cells”. These creatures can be summoned in times of battle to eat and destroy any awkward baddies that stand in your way, including the horrendously hard to beat dragons.

The Golem War mode involves two teams competing to defeat the “Gold Golem” which is an end of level Dragon-devil which confronts each team separately. The player who defeats the Golem will receive the golden sword which basically means your character is surrounded by a golden glow and is indestructible for a limited period of time. You must then travel to the opposing team's Golem and defeat it without dying. Stage mode is more strategic. It involves less killing and more wit and guile to reach the end of the level and move onto the next world. Along the way, you again collect gold for killings which you can trade at the end of a level for more firepower. For those who prefer strategy to violence, Stage mode will prove more interesting.

The game's graphics are nothing exceptional although they are very gory – axes flying around chopping off heads and arms are displayed in considerable bloodthirsty detail. Most importantly, the game play is smooth except when playing online, as users competing against each other have complained that the game lags a lot. The sound is a bit disappointing – you can choose to have either just effects or select from a very limited series of soundtracks which all sound the same but are arranged differently. The sound effects are better than the soundtracks so our recommendation is to disable music in the options menu.

According to some users, direct hits on opponents sometimes do not register. Although we didn’t notice this, it may become apparent after prolonged gameplay. This is more a problem with online users due to the lag times although the developers claim the game has a clever detector which ensures all players in the same game have the same ping time before battle commences. Users also report the online feature is prone to occasional crashes and hacker attacks; however this is fairly common in such games.

In summary, one of the most bloodthirsty games out there although once you’ve got rid of that initial aggression, you may find it all a bit one dimensional.

Download Rakion: Chaos Force in Softonic
