SketchBook MobileX 1.6

SketchBook MobileX is an app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch that allows you to sketch drawings by hand.

On top of simply drawing via the touch screen on your device, SketchBook MobileX also offers paint, airbrush and flood-fill drawing options, among others. Essentially, SketchBook MobileX is technology's answer to pencil and paper. On top of basic functions, SketchBook MobileX also offers a multitude of color options. Users familiar with Adobe Photoshop will likely be delighted with the similar features offered by SketchBook MobileX, available on their pocket-sized device.

In addition, you can also change the thickness of your drawing utensils. The ability to layer drawings is also a feature many users will praise. SketchBook MobileX also gives you the option to paint on a white sheet of digital paper or import an image from your device's library or, in the alternative, directly from a camera. And, of course, the option exists to save your newly-created image to the location of your choosing.

Unfortunately, some features are a little confusing to use, despite the initial tutorial given during your first use. The app offers an extensive help section, but it can take time to find exactly what you're looking for. Saving your image, for example, might seem to be a simple function to perform but can be rather tricky to learn your first time out.

SketchBook MobileX is a great drawing tool for beginners and more advanced artists alike.

Download SketchBook MobileX 1.6 in Softonic

Mill Colour 1.2

Mill Colour is a color editing application, and that alone. It doesn't feature flipping, rotating or cropping like Adobe's Photoshop.com Mobile. However, it does have great color features.

The iPhone takes surprisingly good pictures for a relatively low resolution camera, but the native camera application doesn't feature any editing tools.

You can choose either to edit a picture on your camera roll, or take a new one, and then Mill Colour gives you two main options. You can choose a 'Look' to give your image, or manually edit the colors. The looks in Mill Colour range from 70s, to instant camera-style and all give images a very different feel. They are also much subtler than the equivalents in Photoshop.

Mill Colour's color editor allows you to edit the Lift, Gamma, Gain or Saturation. Each of these can be altered by Red, Green and Blue filters or all together. This gives you a lot of subtlety and control, although it takes some practice to get the hang of it. Thankfully results appear in real time so you can see what you're changing.

Mill Colour is a neat application, although some users may prefer the effects like vignetting that other apps offer. However, for changing color values alone, Mill Colour is really effective.

Download Mill Colour 1.2 in Softonic

Photoshop Express 2.0.4

Adobe Photoshop was traditionally reserved for the likes of art and design professionals. These days though it seems like every man, woman and child with a computer dabbles with the software. As if to confirm its place in pop culture, Photoshop now has its own iPhone app, in the shape of Photoshop Express.

In truth, this app is an extremely watered-down version of Photoshop, which is very limited in its functionality. Photoshop Express allows you to perform basic image editing tasks, giving you the option to select a photo from your iPhone, or take one using the device's camera.

You'll find four drop-down menus at the top of the Photoshop Express interface, from where you can access the editing tools. The first is for cropping, rotating and flipping images; the second lets you tweak exposure, saturation, tint and black and white settings; the third applies sketch or soft focus effects; and the final menu lets you choose from a variety of special effects. The effects in Photoshop Express include Rainbow, Border, Pop, and more.

Great use of touch

As you'll probably be thinking by now, this isn't exactly a powerful array of tools. Well, it's not, but then Photoshop Express is really just designed for quick photo editing on the move. If viewed in this way, it's actually a great success because the user interface is just so intuitive. Photoshop Express makes intelligent use of the iPhones touch technology. For example, Saturation and Exposure editing requires you to swipe across the screen to increase the intensity of the effect. Meanwhile, rotating and flipping is done by manipulating the image with your finger. Weirdly though, you can't pinch the screen to zoom into a photo. In fact, Photoshop Express has no zoom at all.

What's great about Photoshop Express is that once you've finished capturing and editing your pictures, you can quickly put them up online via the Upload tool, to Photoshop.com, Twitter or Facebook

All in all, Photoshop Express is a decent portable, on-the-fly image editor. Just don't expect anything more than the most basic of imaging tools.

Download Photoshop Express 2.0.4 in Softonic

Adobe Ideas for iPad 1.2

Adobe Ideas is the perfect companion for artists on the go. If you like drawing quick sketches while commuting to work or sitting at a cafe, this iPad app is for you.

With Adobe Ideas you can quickly capture concepts and draw sketches of anything around you thanks to a set of drawing tools and color themes you can capture directly from photos stored on your iPad.

The drawing tools included in Adobe Ideas are pretty basic – namely brush, eraser and color palette – but combined with a powerful color selection and the excellent response of the iPad screen, you can easily create quite impressive drawings. We especially liked the ability to set a picture as the background layer, so you can use Adobe Ideas to draw over it. On the downside, configuring the brush in terms of size, opacity and color can be a bit confusing - it took us a while to figure out how to change color.

Adobe Ideas saves and organizes your sketches – ideas – automatically and also lets you share them by email as PDF, so you can import them into Illustrator or Photoshop for further editing later on.

Adobe Ideas is a powerful digital sketchbook you can take anywhere with you on your iPad.

Download Adobe Ideas for iPad 1.2 in Softonic
