Viber has been available on mobile devices for a few years now but finally a desktop client has been released for <taglink type="program" country="en" id="69660283">Windows</taglink> and Mac.

Interesting alternative to Skype and Messages

The desktop version of Viber is an interesting competitor to Skype and Messages for Mac. Millions already use Viber to chat and make video call on mobile but until now it wasn't possible to use Viber from your desktop. Although it doesn't offer all the functionality of the mobile versions, it's still a very worthy alternative.

Rock-solid syncing with mobile devices

The developer of Viber for Mac is keen to highlight that it has superior mobile syncing than competitor products. Viber does a good job of making sure that wherever you left off on your mobile device, your chats can be picked up. Contacts are also synced, although some users already report some problems with this. You can make calls and video chats with other Macs but you can't yet make video calls to mobile devices or do video conferencing using Viber for Mac.

Slick, easy to use interface

The interface is very elegant and easy to use. Anyone who has used Skype or Messages will have no problems using Viber. You'll need to sign-up for a Viber account if you don't have one, which you are prompted to do when you setup the app.

Reliable syncing and good quality video

Viber for Mac generally syncs very reliably and efficiently and the quality of video-to-video on Mac is as good as anything Skype can offer. However, some users have already reported problems with syncing and the lack of ability to call mobiles is a bit disappointing.

A solid IM and VoIP client

Viber for Mac is a solid IM and VoIP client that's worth trying for anyone that's had enough of Skype and Messages.

Download Viber 3.0.0 in Softonic

Imagine if <taglink type="program" country="en" id="300055">FaceTime for Mac</taglink> could make calls to not just iPhones but also Android, Windows, and Blackberry devices too. That's exactly what LINE for Mac does in a slick FaceTime-style interface that's sure to prove popular with Mac users that have friends and family using different mobile devices.

LINE for Mac is a Japanese based app that allows you to make free calls and send free messages to iPhone, Android, Windows and Blackberry phones as well as other Macs and PCs. LINE is also available for Windows meaning Mac users can communicate with friends and family that use PCs as well as Macs. However, although Line for Mac offers much greater flexibility than FaceTime, it doesn't feature video calling yet although you can send short video and audio messages.

Call quality using LINE for Mac is pretty good though although this will depend on your internet connection and 3G network. LINE for Mac is also jam packed with emoticons (and with the option to purchase more elaborate "stickers") to make messaging more fun. This latter feature is particularly popular in Japan and has helped make it one of the most successful apps on the market.

In the 7 months since it was released in Japan, the developers claim LINE for Mac has gained over 100 million users which is pretty impressive. Until now, many iPhone and Android users have resorted to using <taglink type="program" country="en" id="94732">WhatsApp</taglink> to keep in touch with friends and family but unlike LINE for Mac, WhatsApp has never been released for PC or Mac.

If you're a Mac user with friends using PCs and different mobile devices, LINE for Mac is definitely worth checking out.

Download LINE 3.4.1 in Softonic

This means you can now watch your buddies as you chat to them and let them see you if you want.

You can use the program to chat with other Skype users anywhere in the world for free either via telephone or the built-in chat feature. However, some overly optimistic users may be disappointed to learn that you still need to pay for credits to make calls to landlines and mobiles with Skype, through the SkypeOut function. Luckily, this is a very painless process, and Skype has recently added a plethora of different ways to pay.

The program is perhaps even easier to use than ever, with streamlined new tools such as the ability to add a contact from the main Skype window and contact grouping for arranging your friends, family and colleagues into categories. You can even import contacts from Outlook, and find out if any of these use Skype. The changes to the interface and its icons may confuse existing users for a while, but once you get used to it, the new GUI is arguably more intuitive than ever.

As we’ve come to expect there’s plenty you can do other than just having a two-way conversation with a friend, including inviting other users into a conference, setting up chatrooms, exchanging files, and viewing the history of your contacts. You can even set up customized voicemail to record messages while you’re away from base.

Skype 2 remains a slimmed down version of Skype that may have been replaced by Skype 5 but still somehow feels simpler and more straightforward than the latter.

Download Skype 2 2.8.0.866 in Softonic

QuickTime is Apple's own proprietory video format and QuickTime player is the official player for it. Nowadays however, it can handle much more than the standard QuickTime MOV format and it can play just about anything if you install Perian to complement it.

Note that this particular version only works on Snow Leopard i.e. OS X 10.6.3+. QuickTime X has superseded it but it does not support older formats. QuickTime Player 7 supports older media formats, such as QTVR, interactive QuickTime movies, and MIDI files on Snow Leopard and OS X Lion. It also accepts QuickTime 7 Pro registration codes, which turn on QuickTime Pro functions.

As you would expect from an Apple product, Quicktime is extremely slick to use to the point of sometimes "hiding" features that you would expect to be more readily available - such as creating playlists for example. When it comes to performing basic functions such as playback, it's very easy to use although launching it is still a little slow.

If you want to really get the most out of QuickTime 7 however, you need to upgrade to the Pro version which allows you to do much more such as edit and convert video files. QuickTime 7 is designed to play Apple's MOV video format although as mentioned earlier, it can play much more than this with Perian installed. However, there are other players such as VLC media player which do this without third party plugins and are much quicker to launch.

Quicktime is by no means essential nowadays but it still remains Apple's flagship media player and is definitely worth upgrading to the Pro version.

Download QuickTime 7.6.6 in Softonic

There is always a danger of combining so many elements in one package because invariably, some will be better than others but SOHO Organizer manages to do quite a good job on all counts. What is undeniable though is that SOHO Organizer has been directly inspired by Address Book and in some areas, looks uncannily like it.

You can import and export info from other applications into SOHO Organizer and sync everything with mobile devices. There is some confusion though in how everything integrates - it's sometimes hard to switch between the various components and some parts, such as the journal, are too basic to worth bothering with.

If you want to bring all your organizational tasks under one umbrella then SOHO Organizer could be the all-in-one solution you were looking for - it's certainly more powerful than Address Book.

Download SOHO Organizer 9.1.5 in Softonic

Amongst the many benefits of it are that it allows you to extend the functionality of both your Mac and Bluetooth mobile device. For instance, with BluePhoneElite, you can use your your Mac's microphone and speakers like a Bluetooth hands-free device, sync your phone to computer call-logs, configure incoming call notification with caller ID, and more. You can also perform simple operations such as connect to the Internet using your phone, or exporting your contacts.

When you open BluePhoneElite, you're instructed to set up your Bluetooth device for the first time. Depending on what kind of device you have, you'll be informed which of BluePhoneElite's functions are available to you. These include Call Log Sync, Network and Power Status readings, and Ring Profiles on basic phones. On newer phones you can configure integration with iTunes, Spotlight, and iChat.

The usefulness of BluePhoneElite will however depend on the type of Bluetooth devices you have. Users with older ones with small screens will probably find managing BluePhoneElite more hassle than it's worth, but those with next generation models with get a lot out of it.

BluePhoneElite is an excellent application for anyone who needs closer ties between their Mac and their mobile device.

Download BluePhoneElite 2.2.8 in Softonic

It allows you to write entries under dated headers as a page in a diary does and then allows you to browse them chronologically. If you want to keep more than one diary that's no problem either - viJournal allows you to have several running at once. Alternatively, you can use what the program calls "Sessions" which means you can setup categories for each day and enter details within those categories within a specific day.

Along the bottom of the clean interface you have four buttons - one that pops out a notepad for random thoughts, one for dragging in images, a Drop Box for attaching multimedia and other files and a Library button to navigate through your entries. You can even drag iTunes marker tracks into viJournal so that you can click on the marker when you read back through viJournal and it will play the track you were listening to when you wrote it. In the Drop Box, you can record video from your iSight camera to add some more life to your entries or just take a photo.

There's much more to viJournal including integration with Blogger and LiveJournal, security locking and syncing with mobile devices that make viJournal a superb option for the personal diarist.

Download viJournal 2.3.8 in Softonic

VoxOx have therefore come up with the idea that everything should be possible under one umbrella. You can do almost any type of communication task under VoxOX including send e-mail, instant messages, text messages, host video conferences, make phone calls, post messages to your Facebook account, send faxes and much more.

This is obviously an ambitious task and one of the most time consuming issues with VoxOx is simply configuration of the service. If you're going to get maximum use from it, you'll have to import all your contacts from your regular IM client, configure it for Facebook and enter your mobile number amongst other things so it's a while before you can get started. Once logged in however, the interface is very click and reminds me of the iPod touch keypad.

It is rather overwhelming however. I'm simply not used to being able to do so many things from what looks look an IM client and it does take some time to find your way round it. That said, it's also got a lot of potential - the ability to do so much communication from one place is an appealing one indeed.

VoxOx is an interesting concept and if you're looking for an all in one communication suite, it's definitely worth a look.

Download VoxOx 2.5.0.3453 in Softonic

PhoneView can be used to access and backup iTunes, voice memos, voicemail, photos, notes, SMS/MMS, contacts and call history data. You can transfer data from your Mac to your iPhone in the form of text, Word or PDF files into iPhone notes. The drag and drop interface makes it easy and fast to transfer files both ways.

The interface and ease of use of PhoneView is superb. However, many users have reported problems of it not working either when their iPhone firmware has been updated or with 3G iPhones. Subsequent updates have solved these problems however. In addition, there are problems with iOS 4. For example, Notes add/edit/delete, Call Log delete, Message delete and Camera Roll delete are not available for iOS 4 devices.

Overall, PhoneView is a handy and efficient iPhone management application that will help you get more out of your iPhone.

Download PhoneView 2.6 in Softonic

Dialectic 1.7

Dialectic connects your Mac with all your telephones, including landline and mobile, and your VoIP applications. It essentially works as hub, from where you can collect and store numbers and dial them quickly. The application integrates perfectly with applications such as Address Book, FileMaker or Entourage where you can store any new number or access your contacts.

Dialectic can be configured by way of dialing methods such as AppleScripts but you can also store usernames and passwords for all your phones. Dialing rules will be of most use to those of you frequently calling around the world, but can also be set to organize your calls by types, such as as business or private ones.

I can see how Dialectic is aimed at simplifying things for you if you have more than two phones and make calls constantly. However the drawback is that you always need to be working from your Mac and need to ensure that all your phones can connect to it properly.

Dialectic converges all your phones into one interface from where you can dial and store any number.

Download Dialectic 1.7 in Softonic

MobileSyncBrowser 4.1.1 Beta

MobileSyncBrowser is a little tool to view iTunes backups from your iPhone. The clever thing is, it doesn't actually touch your phone at all because iTunes creates backups of your SMS text messages, notes, call history every time you sync. MSB simply allows you to view these backups and optionally export them.

Contrary to what the name says however it won't let you sync with any mobile phone - only with the iPhone. However, the application offers a simple interface via which you can consult and recover all backups, such as SMS, call logs and notes. The advantage of this is that it allows you to free-up much needed space on your iPhone. You can consult different elements recovered in a separate application window, such as details of a specific contact so that you easily keep track of what's been extracted.

Still, MobileSyncBrowser is still very much in development and you may encounter the odd bug or crash. It's also prone to take a long time to scan and sync, especially if you've got a lot of data on your phone.

Despite still being a little unstable, MobileSyncBrowser is a welcome tool for anybody looking to view iTunes backups from their iPhone.

Download MobileSyncBrowser 4.1.1 Beta in Softonic

goober Messenger 2.1 Beta

Although goober Messenger looks like just another Instant Messaging client, it is in fact much more than that.

goober Messenger encompasses absolutely everything from aggregating RSS feeds to video playback, and offers cheap calls to mobile networks worldwide. This is undoubtedly an ambitious package but for the most part, goober Messenger does a decent job of providing these features quickly and efficiently. Unfortunately, this Mac beta release does not allow you to make video calls or landline/mobile calls although those features will surely come in the official release.

When you install goober Messenger, you'll need to sign up for an account, which only takes a minute or so, and doesn't involve divulging anything you're not comfortable with. The toolbar along the top is the main control center for goober Messenger. From here you can add new messenger contacts from major IM clients, manage your address book and add widgets amongst other things. The widget function is something that makes goober Messenger a little more unique than other IM clients as they allow you to expand the functionality of goober Messenger very easily.

You've also got access to an online hard drive. This only gives you 200MB of free space but it's better than nothing. Another interesting feature is the 'Radio and TV' button, which allows you to watch TV and listen to radio channels within goober Messenger. Many of the channels are pretty obscure, but the quality of streaming is good and you can watch them in full screen by double clicking on them.

Other buttons include options to join special topic-orientated chat rooms, payment for sending text messages, a text messaging function and a button to change goober Messenger settings.

goober Messenger deserves full marks for being innovative, even if it all feels a bit overwhelming at first. If you were to take advantage of all of it's features, you'd have a mighty powerful and comprehensive messenger, multimedia and online storage solution.

Download goober Messenger 2.1 Beta in Softonic

Android SDK 1.5 Release 3

Google is aiming to create a shake-up in mobile phone operating systems with the launch of its Android platform. Designed to be completely open and free for developers, the API could change the way mobile phone software is used, making all applications equal and combining phone-based data with web tools.

The Android SDK gives mobile software developers the chance to play around with the new platform. It contains everything you need to start building applications, as well as a fully functional device emulator for testing them out when you've finished.

Even non-developers can try out the emulator, as it's easy to set up and run (it does take a while to load up, mind you). There is a choice of phone skins and resolutions to tinker with too. After fiddling around for a bit with the OS I must say I'm pretty impressed. Its integration with Google Maps is seamless and only shows to highlight the potential for development of apps that blur the boundaries between phone and web-based software.

Installing software onto the emulator isn't easy and you need to fiddle around with code in order to do so. Although, there's plenty of documentation available online to help you get the most from the SDK, this is still really only something mobile developers will get much use out of, rather than just those curious about how Android applications will look.

Overall though, Android SDK provides a fast and reliable development environment for those looking towards the next era of mobile software.

Download Android SDK 1.5 Release 3 in Softonic

The Missing Sync for BlackBerry 2.0.1

If you're a Mac user but your company contract phone is a Blackberry, then you need someway to ensure that your Mac is synchronized with your device. Blackberry's own software is a horrible application called PocketMac which is a pain both to install and use and The Missing Sync for Blackberry is a much better solution.

The Missing Sync for BlackBerry enables you to do so wirelessly via Bluetooth meaning no messing around with cables. It also automatically syncs your Mac and Blackberry via Proximity Sync so you can keep all of your contacts, calendars, music, photos, videos, notes and more in sync.

Installation of The Missing Sync for BlackBerry is a bit of a pain however as it involves restarting your Mac which is highly inconvenient if you've got several browser tabs and applications open like I did. It also takes a while to set everything up. Once you've installed The Missing Sync for BlackBerry, you then have to install it on your Blackberry, pair up the two devices, define a password and the first synchronization has to be done using a USB cable.

It's worth the hassle to get through this though. The application itself is well presented, easy to use and shows clearly everything that can be synced on your Mac. You can also access it via the menu bar where a drop down menu allows you to select things like iCal and iTunes that you'd like to access, and then in one click, sync them. Unfortunately however, there is no way to sync bookmarks as yet. There are several other useful options such as the ability to add different profiles for different devices, customize the toolbar and even on online shop for you to buy peripherals.

If all you've ever used is Blackberry's proprietary software to sync your device, you're in for a treat with The Missing Sync for Blackberry.

Download The Missing Sync for BlackBerry 2.0.1 in Softonic
