Potatoman Seeks The Troof

Potatoman Seeks The Troof is a brutal platform game in the same vein as Meat Boy, but even harsher. Potatoman Seeks The Troof has difficult obstacles, limited lives, and a psychedelic presentation. Even at only five levels it will take a glutton for punishment to complete this short game.

The world of Potatoman Seeks The Troof is drawn in 4-bit pixels, but don’t expect it to be stable as an old console game. As you move forward the screen will blur and dissolve in a substance addled haze. At times this could make you wonder if something is wrong with your PC or in-game settings, but soon you’ll be accustomed to Potatoman Seeks The Troof’s jarring visual design. Not only does the environment distort, but the camera will often tilt and spin in unexpected ways. This isn’t just limited to when you’re grounded and prepared: in some cases you may have to dodge a speeding car or rolling rock before either it or you is in frame.

Potatoman Seeks The Troof is unforgiving and often punishes you for going at the wrong pace. At times this can mean you either need to slow down and assess the situation or race passed everything. You won’t realize which one until you’ve died several times and completely restarted the level. Often times you’ll need to get right in the face of danger to understand how an enemy behaves. Potatoman Seeks The Troof promotes trial and error until you’ve memorized how to complete a level flawlessly.

You have no life meter; in Potatoman Seeks The Troof taking a single hit will instantly kill you. You also have no way of defending yourself: no punch, jump attack, or sort of weapons. The only way to survive is to jump over or dodge under the array of challenges in your way.

The obstacles you’ll encounter in Potatoman Seeks The Troof are incredibly varied. You will find yourself running under flying cacti, dodging streams of bats, and outflanking freeway traffic. However, two identical enemies will not always obey the same rules. You might find one egg that bursts open with birds, while another one feet away bounces frantically. You will always need to be on your toes to prevent another death.

Potatoman Seeks The Troof has fresh and challenging gameplay. It will mostly be frustratingly hard so be prepared.

Download Potatoman Seeks The Troof in Softonic

Need For Speed World 1.8.40.1166

Need For Speed World is the new online version of the extremely popular racing game franchise. It's a massively multiplayer open world game (MMO), with RPG style leveling up.

Huge Open world

Need For Speed World features Palmont, the city from Need For Speed Carbon, and also Rockport from Most Wanted, which combine to make a huge world to explore. There's a night/day rotation, which makes it feel more dynamic. There are no pedestrians, and little traffic. This means you won't be interrupted too often when racing, but does make Need For Speed World feel a bit lifeless.

Car Shopping

Choose a car from a small range of not very exciting cars to start with, liek the Toyota Corolla or Mitsubishi Eclipse, then roam the huge Need For Speed World looking for races. These can be multi or single player, and get into chases with the cops. Evading the police and ranking in races gives you experience points and money, which in turn unlock better cars that you can buy in the Need For Speed World showroom.

Mods

Your cars can be modified with stickers, paint and decals, and power-ups can be chosen and purchased with in game money. Need For Speed World seems pretty stable, even with loads of players online. When you enter the open world you can't crash into other players, only the environment and other traffic. Online players can only push you around if you enter a race. The cars in Need For Speed World have the forgiving, arcade style handling that makes the franchise such fun to play.

There is online chat alongside the racing, and you can add friends and meet up to race them. Graphically Need For Speed World is ok, but looks a few years old. However, this means you don't need a super computer to play the game!

Overall

Need For Speed World is an impressive massively multiplayer online racing game, and although it looks a bit basic it's really playable.

Download Need For Speed World 1.8.40.1166 in Softonic

Happy Wheels

Happy Wheels is an arcade game game with a dark humorous twist.

In the spirit of games like QWOP, you control the character you're playing with various keys on your keyboard. These are fully customizable if you want to change them in your preferences. The object of Happy Wheels is to get your character through each level as quickly as possible while completing a variety of prompted tasks.

There are a variety of different levels in Happy Wheels where you can do anything from drive a race car to putter around on a segway. Controls are relatively easy, although it does take a few tries to figure out how to make your player move in the exact way you want him to. Every time you hit an obstacle in Happy Wheels, you'll be prompted with text to perform certain keyboard functions in order to move on.

Happy Wheels can be a bit gory, in a cartoon kind of way. For example, in one level when your character is transported back to prehistoric times, a non-playable character gets eaten by a dinosaur, at least partially. His limbs are left behind in a spray of pixellated blood you have to drive your segway through. It's nothing too graphic, but Happy Wheels might not be appropriate for younger children as a result. The game also sometimes freezes up, making your character's movements stick occasionally.

Happy Wheels is an utterly random (and a little bit gory) browser game that will provide considerable amusement.

Download Happy Wheels in Softonic

Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage Beta 1.0.0.0

Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage from Gamepires is a <a href="http://en.softonic.com/windows/driving-games:images"target="_blank">racing game that combines racing with mass destruction. Cars in the game can be upgraded with weapons, and anything goes on the race track. While Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage doesn't bring anything new to the racing genre, it is a solid game.

Graphics and sound

The graphics in Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage are stunning. Environments are rich and detailed. There are particle and bloom effects to give a more realistic feel to the visuals.

The music in the game can vary from whimsical soul music to fast-paced rock and metal. The sounds of the cars are very engaging and give the vehicles a sense of weight. Weapons also give off a weighty sound that makes using them satisfying!

Gameplay

Gamepires has done a good job of making the gameplay of Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage fun and engaging. In single player mode, you make your way up the leaderboards by racing and upgrading your vehicles. There are three main single player game modes: race, weapons, and knockout.

The most fun and interesting of the modes is knockout. You race and use your weapons at the same time, but the last person after every lap is eliminated by being blown up into a million pieces. Stay ahead of your opponents until the very end to stay alive.

There are a ton of unlockable customization and upgrade options for your vehicles. Spend your money on customizing the look of your vehicle, buying weapons, or upgrading your car.

Driving dynamics in Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage are acceptable, but could be more accurate. There's really no need to brake in this game with its arcade-style handling. It's easy to crash the car as the enemy AI is very aggressive, but it makes winning all the more rewarding.

Multiplayer

If you're bored of the single player campaign in Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage, you can jump on a server with strangers or your friends. The same gameplay in the single player campaign can be found in the multiplayer mode.

Performance in multiplayer mode was a bit stuttery but it could have been our connection. Make sure to have a quick connection and low latency when playing in multiplayer mode.

Conclusion

Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage is a solid racing game that delivers fun racing and satisfying car weaponry. Gameplay can become repetitive after a while because it is difficult to gain enough money to make substantial upgrades to your car. Still, fans of games like <a href="http://motorstorm-apocalypse-wallpaper.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">Motor Storm and Twisted Metal will find Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage a satisfying game.

Download Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage Beta 1.0.0.0 in Softonic

Dirchie Kart Beta

Dirchie Kart is a high-speed racing game for Windows PC users.

If you're a fan of games like Mario Kart XP or Mario Kart 360, Dirchie Kart is of a similar nature and spirit. It's a remix of 16-bit kart racing games of days past that still provides fun for racing kart fans of all ages.

There are eight different cars and characters you can opt to race with in Dirchie Kart. Each car has its own quirks and peculiarities, which make the game more unique and fun. Before each game, you can also choose up to three weapons to use against your opponents during the race.

There are three types of competitions to race in with Dirchie Kart: Economy, Grand Prix and Retro Remix. The Grand Prix option actually plays real Formula 1 circuits, which will be a plus for fans of that type of racing.

Unfortunately, Dirchie Kart's graphics really aren't all that impressive. Some users might be turned off by their simplicity. It's the circuits and variety of cars to choose from that are Dirchie Kart's strong suits though, and in those areas the game definitely doesn't disappoint.

If you can get past unimpressive graphics, Dirchie Kart provides tons of racing fun for players of all ages.

Download Dirchie Kart Beta in Softonic

Speed Racers 1.18

Speed Racers is a racing game that throws users into a futuristic setting among the clouds.

If you're a big racing fan, you've probably gone through all of the popular street racing games for PCs already. Now's your chance to race in the future on several fun, technologically advantage race tracks in Speed Racers.

In Speed Racers one of your main concerns is being faster than your opponents. That's just the start of it though. Speed Racers also requires you to avoid a myriad of obstacles that show up on and around your track, such as holes that'll throw you right out of the sky itself.

Speed Racers' graphics are pretty good. The cars are crisp and interesting to look at, although there could definitely be more defined details. In addition, some of Speed Racers' tracks will keep you at the edge of your seat until you make it to the finish line, assuming you actually do! The obstacles thrown at you make the tracks challenging and fun to try to make it through.

Unfortunately Speed Racers can get repetitive after playing it for awhile. Some of the modes you can choose to play in Career player are also a bit disappointing and dull, providing no real unique experiences you couldn't find in other racing games. There's also no real underlying story in Speed Racers like some of the more intense games provide for you to get behind.

Speed Racers is good, solid and futuristic racing fun, but doesn't bring anything extra to the table beyond that.

Download Speed Racers 1.18 in Softonic

Trucks & Trailers is a very original driving game in which for once, you won’t be driving high-speed sports cars. The main protagonists here are trucks.

The point in Trucks & Trailers is not arriving first to the finish line or pushing your competitors off the road. The goal of this game is to learn how to drive a big truck by mastering all the basic abilities required in order to drive these 18-wheel steel machines.

Trucks & Trailers will test your skills in parking, attaching and dropping the trailer, fueling at a gas station, delivering goods and other basic truck-driver tasks. It may seem easy at first, but the realistic physics in Trucks & Trailers makes controls a bit hard to get to grips with – not to mention the trailer attached to your truck and its behavior.

The graphics in Trucks & Trailers are fine; not the most realistic we’ve seen, but with a good amount of detail and based on real models. Too bad the demo only lasts for 30 minutes, which hardly gives you time to start enjoying the game.

If you’ve always dreamed of driving a huge truck, this is your chance.

Need For Speed Underground is a fast-paced game car lovers will enjoy.

Do you love racing cars on your computer? Then get ready for Need For Speed Underground!

Need For Speed Underground is a fast-paced street racing game. Speed around Olympic City with a variety of different tuner cars. This game features three new play modes - Drag, Drift and Sprint. It also has a bit of a back story for gamers who want more than just a frenzied race around a virtual landscape.

If the car designs look familiar, that might just be because Need For Speed Underground features aspects of the import tuner culture made popular in movies and subsequent games like The Fast & the Furious. There's also a huge variety of tuning options in Need For Speed Underground, sure to satisfy any true race car fan. Some of these include widebody kits, spoilers, rims, window tints and decals. You can also upgrade your car's performance when it comes to the engine to make street racing through Olympic City even more nail-biting.

The only real criticism fans of this game might have is that there are no cops features in Need For Speed Underground. Slower computers might also have difficulties running the game without a few hiccups in gameplay.

With great graphics and lots of action though, there's a lot to love about Need For Speed Underground.

Download Need For Speed Underground in Softonic

There are various power ups littered around and other collectibles. Points are won for collecting objects and performing stunts. There is a free mode, which lasts until you decide you've had enough, a times mode, where the object is to get a high score in a limited time, and a challenge mode.

Controls are via the keyboard, which works well enough, although the vehicle physics aren't very realistic, and the car is really sensitive. While it sounds like fun, there is something dry about StuntMANIA Pro, that makes it quickly boring. There aren't really enough defined things to do, and the odd physics mean you often end up jut wildly spinning in the air.

If it had courses of better challenges to focus the gampeplay, StuntMANIA Pro would be much improved. The sound effects are the worst part - the engine tone doesn't change with speed, which quickly renders it an annoying buzz.

StuntMANIA Pro is a nice idea, but the dull environments and lack of structure make it a bit dull.

Download StuntMANIA Pro 4.5 in Softonic

The Fast & The Furious is an online browser game based around car tuning and street racing, just like the movie of the same name.

Once registered and signed in, you have to give yourself a street name, choose a car, and then you're off. The Fast & The Furious is essentially a statistics based role playing game, with street racing stuck on top. You race to win points, so you can tune up your car, and beat better opponents.

The focus is on tuning, not racing, as this isn't an action game. Drag races are animated, but you can choose to click past them and just get the result. It's a bit like Need For Speed, but without the driving.

As you win The Fast & The Furious races you increase your skill and so on, but you also increase Police attention. Once that's over 50%, you are likely to be thrown in to jail unless you wait for the heat to cool off. What this means is that you cannot play The Fast & The Furious constantly, clicking through races to increase your XP and stats, as the game forces you to wait. There are premium options that allow you to spend your way out of the waiting game, however.

If you enjoy this type of numbers game, there appears to be a reasonably large community to interact with, but nothing really stands out in The Fast & The Furious to make it extra special. The lack of real action makes it pretty dull, unless you get addicted to the mindless RPG grinding.

The Fast & The Furious is a relatively simple online RPG, based around the exiting sport of street racing, but without any of the adrenaline rushes.

Download The Fast & The Furious Online Game in Softonic

Split/Second: Velocity is an intense arcade racing game that drops reality for a crazy fantasy TV game show of explosions, destruction, and then more explosions.

This one-race demo is pretty hefty at just over a gigabyte, but for that you get a really impressive, high octane experience. Split/Second: Velocity has a story, that you are a contestant in an insane reality TV show, where you race around courses that are loaded with destructive events that can change the track as well as wreck vehicles.

In this Split/Second: Velocity demo the race is around an airport, with falling towers, bridges and even a plane crash to liven up the action. The speed is incredible in this game, and the cars and scenery look great as you career around the course. There are excellent camera effects that really increase the intensity of Split/Second: Velocity , like blurring, vibrating and some great slow motion crashes!

There are no setup options, so if your PC struggles with frame rates, there's nothing you can do unfortunately. With lots of cars and events on screen, it can get a bit hectic. Split/Second: Velocity brings back the quick thrill of arcade games from the past, which is a great prospect. If you enjoy the detailed realism of simulators, this over-the-top racer won't appeal to you.

Split/Second: Velocity is a racing game that puts high octane action centre stage, while throwing the real world out of the window.

GeneRally is an old school top-down racing game that features basic retro graphics but great competitive gameplay.

The interface is a bit clunky, but works well enough. You can choose from lots of tracks, and a range of different vehicles that all handle differently. Control is configurable to whatever keys you want to use, and is perfectly simple.

The thing that sets GeneRally apart is that it supports 6 players on the same computer - if you can all squeeze around the keyboard! For simple and fast competitive games, it's excellent. Obviously today we don't need to squeeze around one computer very often, and most people would probably prefer some network multiplayer instead. On balance, online play would really improve GeneRally, as one computer multiplayer is a bit limiting.

Despite the quirky multiplayer, the huge range of tracks and vehicles, plus the nicely balanced game physics make GeneRally a good deal. It's even free! For creative types, there's also a track editor, so you can create your own Laguna Seca.

Racer 0.8.4 Beta

There are few decent open source driving games on Windows and even fewer that are free. Racer is definitely a decent attempt at creating the latter, although I came across more than a few problems with it.

Racer is a cross-platform car simulation project which is high on realism, employing accurate car movements and controls to maximum effect. The fact that it's open source means that what you download are only the basics - to add more cars and tracks you'll have to go to the contents page where you will find links to several sites providing more cars and tracks.

When you start Racer, it's best to go to 'Options' and then 'Controls' to configure how you'd like to control your car. Click on the aspect you want to change the control for (such as accelerate and brake) and then press the button you'd like to use for it. When you start a race, you're able to configure how many cars you'd like to race against, which track, which car and how many tracks. However, you have to download these options from the contents page and upload them to Racer. It would have been nice if the developer had included at least a few examples to give a better taste of what the game can do. And besides, when I tried to select 16 cars to race against, the game simply crashed.

Because the controls are designed to be as realistic as possible, handling your car is quite tough. To get started, get your revs up and then shift into first gear. The problem is that the gear indicator isn't very clear, so as you're racing it's hard to know what gear you're in. However, the sounds and controls give a feeling of realism and the graphics aren't bad at all for a free racing application.

The good thing about Racer is that it is open source and the sky is the limit for those wanting to add to it. The bad is that you have to visit different sites to add bits onto it, the controls take some getting used to, and it is still prone to crashes.

Download Racer 0.8.4 Beta in Softonic

VDrift is an open-source racing simulator, featuring ten real world tracks and thirteen varied cars to choose from.

There are two game modes - practice and single race. Practice lets you drive any vehicle solo around a track, while single race lets you do the same against up to three computer controlled opponents. The menu screens in VDrift are very basic and functional, excepting the controls menu which is very unclear!

VDrift's in game graphics are fine, although in today's HD world they are a bit out-dated, as does is the sound. The driving physics are quite good, although some vehicles really don't respond well to keyboard control, as without analogue subtlety they are liable to spinning a lot!

While free games are always good, and an open source project like VDrift is admirable, there are some things that it seems only money can buy. Artificial Intelligence is one of those. The computer drivers are all the same, and drive as if you aren't there - they don't try to avoid you, for example. In slow cars they are extremely easy to beat, and in the F1 car they are robotically perfect. The other thing this lacks is character - the whole experience feels soulless, and being free can't make up for what is a pretty dry experience.

Constantly under development, VDrift is a competent but dull racing game, that lacks game modes good AI.

Download VDrift 2009-06-15 in Softonic

If you're excited about all things Formula 1, why let your monitor idle time away on boring Windows screensavers? 3D Formula 1 Screensaver puts the king of motorsport on your desktop.

To run 3D Formula 1 Screensaver, you have to install Astro Gemini's screensaver manager, which is included in the download. This isn't a bit problem, but it'd be nice to run it from the Windows screensaver interface. You can configure 3D Formula 1 Screensaver, in terms of what actions turn it off and whether it plays effects and music.

The graphics are pretty good - not up to current generation games, but slick enough with nice camera angles and variation. Unless you enjoy the sound of noisy mosquitoes the sound effects will quickly become annoying background noise. The techno-like music is pretty forgettable. Luckily, both can be turned off. The demo version will display a nag screen after a couple of minutes, asking you to upgrade to the full version, but otherwise there are no interruptions.

For Formula 1 fans, this screensaver is great, even if it's missing official 2009 details.

Download 3D Formula 1 Screensaver in Softonic

Burnout Paradise The Ultimate Box

PC users have had to wait a bit for Burnout Paradise to make the move from consoles, and possibly to compensate Criterion are offering this demo which gives you total access to the imaginary city, albeit for only half an hour.

The half an hour limit is an issue, as this is a huge download, coming in at 3 gigabytes! If you have a slow internet connection, you could easily be downloading for longer than you can play. The second issue is the format of introducing you to the game - which pauses your driving to explain something - can be irritating if you really just want to drive, see the city, and crash into stuff.

These criticisms can't detract from what is an absolutely fantastic arcade racing game. If you demand realistic handling and simulation from your racing games, Burnout Paradise is not for you. The physics are convincing while the handling of the cars is forgiving enough to permit long drifts and ridiculous jumps and crashes. Crashes, as fans of Burnout will tell you, are not done better anywhere else, and they are well integrated into races (after a big crash you have a running start!). This is all about adrenalin fueled, over the top, and psychotically dangerous racing.

There are numerous challenges from straight races to Road Rage, where the objectives is to takedown a number of other racers before you destroy your vehicle and Marked Man, where you have to reach a destination before pursuers destroy you. Alternatively, you can just drive around the enormous open world of Paradise City. Some people may find the lack of defined structure a pain - you are never told to do anything, just enter competitions at your leisure, but you soon get into the rhythm of the game.

Visually, the cars look great, the damage modeling is just what you would want, and the city is wonderful to look at, at night or day. The advantage of this fictional city is that it's been custom built to drive in, and the corners, ramps, short cuts and so on that are littered liberally around mean it's always a fun place to be.

As long as realism isn't your thing, Burnout Paradise City is the perfect driving playground.

Download Burnout Paradise The Ultimate Box in Softonic

Mad Race

You know, the kind of racing game with aerial perspective and small-sized, cartoonish cars.

Mad Race is an excellent example of these micro machine driving games. It challenges you not only to arrive to the finishing line in the first position, but also to get rid of your opponents. To prevent you from getting bored of driving, it provides you with a ton of weapons and other bonuses you can use against other drivers.

The game supports multiple player profiles and two main gaming modes: single race and tournament. You'll have access to different tracks and cars, though not all of them will be available from the beginning and you'll have to unlock them as you progress through the game.

Mad Race features surprisingly good graphics for a free racing game, and will surely provide you with hours of fun. I have only one complaint and that refers to the game's camera, which I found a bit dizzying at times.

If you're looking for a simple yet fun driving game, Mad Race is definitely a great choice.

Download Mad Race in Softonic

Pure

Driving games differ in a number of different ways, not just because they contain different kinds of vehicles (cars, bikes, Formula 1) but also in the type of challenge they present.

In the case of Pure the main objective is not only crossing the line in the first place, but also performing as many jumps, tricks and other acrobatics while you’re on air, flying at top speed over bumpy trails with your quad bike.

Before actually starting the race, Pure makes you go through a training session that also works as a kind-of tutorial. It's a good way to get used to the game's quite confusing controls, which inexplicably mix up keys from the standard WASD combination and the arrow keys.

After you learn how to preload, boost and do a basic trick, you're ready to go: it's time for a real race! This time the track is much more fun, because it enables you to compete against other drivers and also includes higher jumps in which you'll be able to show off everything you learned during the tutorial stage. The realistic, highly detailed graphics in Pure serve to make it even more enjoyable, and a lively rock-style soundtrack adds the final touch.

Pure requires a bit of dexterity, so if you don't get any trick during the first few minutes of gameplay don't panic. Also, note that you’re supposed to perform different tricks on each jump (repeating penalizes) and that if you’re successful with the basic ones, you’ll unlock more advanced tricks.

On the downside, I must admit Pure let us down for various reasons. The first one is the file's size, which is simply too heavy for such a short demo. They could have removed all those promotional videos and include at least another track. The controls are also a bit complex: just performing a basic trick involves four different keys, which are usually configured very far apart from each other on the keyboard. Finally, the game has some absurd restrictions. I don’t know what’s wrong with going a bit off the track or even trying to turn around and racing in the wrong direction, but you simply can't. Pure interrupts the game and puts you into track again. Seriously, a bit more freedom for the player wouldn’t hurt, even if that means I don’t win the race.

Pure is not just about racing: it's also about performing the craziest airborne tricks during the race. Too bad the demo is so short that you hardly have time to enjoy it.

Download Pure in Softonic
