In Fathom you will be presented with a large blank screen and a search box. You can only browse by artist, not individual songs or albums. Fathom will search Rdio’s database and include the artist’s most popular album in the center of the screen. If you do not have a Rdio account you can listen to short samples of each album’s track; Rdio users can listen to entire tracks. As you listen to an album Fathom will search for similar artists and fill the screen with up to twenty relevant albums. Switching to one of these new albums will bring it to the center and Fathom will start searching for more similar artists.

Usability

Fathom is easy to use and understand. When using it for the first time the app will include popups to show you how it functions. Each time you fully exit out of the site and come back these popups will appear again in case you missed them. When you hover over an album additional buttons will overlay. On main albums this includes seeing the album and artist name, selecting through tracks, pausing, searching for more related artists, and even sharing to social networks such as Twitter. On related albums you can only choose to play, close, or queue them. One strange feature is that there is no volume control and the music plays at a rather loud volume.

Quality

Fathom’s design is very basic with simple white and grey gradients. When you first open the app there will be clearly marked spaces for what’s playing, related, queued, and in your history. Strangely all of these headers will quickly become obscured with album art as you search for more music. All of Fathom’s art is pulled from Last.fm’s database. The unfortunate aspect is that an album has to be on both Last.fm and Rdio to show up correctly: If it is only on Last.fm an album art will load but not play; if it is on Rdio but not Last.fm no music will be found at all. Even with a large amount of cover graphics on screen Fathom generally has stable functionality.

Conclusion

Fathom is great if you are looking for new artists that are related to musicians you enjoy. You will need a Rdio account to listen to full tracks, but even without one you can sample an array of new content. While it does have some strange design choices Fathom is still very intuitive.

The mixed mechanics of slide puzzle and platforming is expertly handled in continuity. When platforming you are zoomed in, while hitting the Space Bar zooms the camera out so you can slide the puzzle around. The graphics are minimalist, but move very smoothly, and the action is accompanied by very cool electronic sound effects that change as the camera zooms in and out.

While platforming, the music is a driving house music track, that then effortlessly transitions into cool ambiance when you hit Space to zoom out for puzzling. the combination of the minimalist graphics and cool music really make the game, although the cleverness of the action and puzzles shouldn't be overlooked.

Sharing online is fun, but once you get over a certain size limit, sending things by instant messenger or even email becomes a little unmanageable. One of the best things about 4Shared is how easy the sign up is – an email address, password and you’re in. The SpoTube signup process is fairly easy – the usual username and password, followed by a confirmation email. Don’t get too excited about the website design though – it’s ugly and a little buggy. It was hard to find what we were looking for at first, and sometimes the site got stuck and needed a refresh.

There are various ways of searching for music to add to your playlists with SpoTube. You can use the search box to look for artist, song and album names on YouTube. When the results appear, you can preview them in a small YouTube player, or check the box to add them to a playlist. You can create as many playlists as you like. You can also add Spotify URLS, and SpoTube allows you to integrate yourLast.fm account, if you have one.

SpoTube also has a radio function – you can choose from a variety of stations, and once you click an option, you’ll see lots of other tags you can choose from. Click any of them, or a playlist, and SpoTube will load your music – each of the videos will play one after the other. The actual video will also be displayed in a mini-player that you can pop out to a bigger version if you want.

If listening is your only priority, SpoTube is a good YouTube playlist app. Looking at it is pretty disappointing, though.

While it has been very popular, World Domination is an old game and serves as a reminder to how good browser games have got. It's graphically poor, with awful animation, repetitive music and ridiculous sound effects. Back in 2003, browser games were way behind console and PC games, and World Domination is no exception.

Unlike most turn-based strategy games, World Domination seems to be mainly luck-based. There are instructions, and it's recommended to follow them because there is nothing obvious about the game! When you first create your Pageflakes site, you set your location and the kind of content you want to display from a list of things such as news, sports, music, movies and games. Your Pageflakes page will then be generated. The page is made up of a series of editable widgets, known as 'flakes'. This can be picked up, dragged around, resized and place wherever you like on the page.

Your Pageflakes page can be set to display as your default browser home page. And doing so is not a bad idea considering the kind of useful stuff you can display with flakes. Besides news feeds, Flickr image feeds and video galleries, it can show the top of your Gmail inbox, your Facebook account, and even the local weather for the next few days.

You can add as many Pageflakes pages as you like, and one of the great things about the site is that these can be shared with the user community. You can access and follow other people's Pageflakes pages using a section known as Flakecasting.

The Pageflakes user interface is in need of some improvement. Closing and moving flakes around is fine, but resizing windows has to be done manually, and adding new pages feels very awkward. We also experienced problems with some of the widgets not working properly (the podcast feeds, for instance), or no longer being operational.

Pageflakes is a very interesting concept, allowing you to tweak your own, tailor-made starting place for your internet sessions.
