OpenOffice.org 3.0 has at last hit the shelves – but is it a viable alternative to Microsoft Word?

Well, the answer is yes. OpenOffice.org 3.0 reveals itself as a very decent competitor: it's light on resources, easy to use and offers full compatibility with standard document formats – including the latest .docx, .xlsx, .pptx and so on from the Microsoft Office suite.

OpenOffice.org includes six different apps that enable you to work with text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, vector-based graphics and mathematical formulas, respectively. All six apps are easily accessible from a launcher (the Start Centre) with freshly designed icons, as well as from the Quickstarter icon in the System Tray.

OpenOffice.org's applications met our expectations in every regard: they're easy to use (especially if you're used to working with Microsoft Office) and feature all the necessary tools to create complete documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases and more. What’s more, there is a great selection of OpenOffice templates, which means that getting started will never be a problem. The program is also thoroughly documented.

We particularly liked the wizard-style interface in OpenOffice Impress (similar to PowerPoint), which enables you to create presentations in no time. But the best thing about OpenOffice.org is probably the possibility to improve and customize your suite with new templates and extensions, downloadable directly from the developer's site.

OpenOffice.org made a great impression.
PortableApps Suite 1.6.1

The PortableApps Suite is a collection of programs specially packaged for use from your USB thumb drive, or other portable drive. That means wherever there's a Windows computer you can use "your" apps without installation or changing the host machine's preferences.

All the apps included are open source, and include the Firefox browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email client, the OpenOffice.org suite plus anti-virus, instant messaging, audio players and more. After installing the package on your portable drive, the suite can be used on any Windows computer simply by plugging in and double clicking as usual.

While you can download all of these apps in portable form separately, one advantage of the PortableApps Suite is its integrated menu. Once opened, this sits in the System Tray, and pops up when clicked. Here you have all your portable apps ready to go, plus documents, music pictures and video folders. From the menu you can also add other portable apps of your choice, update them, and keep an eye on your drive with the capacity bar. It really is like carrying a little computer around without the machine!

The downside of this for some people will be the programs included. They are all open source, and while we think OpenOffice, for example, is a great alternative to Microsoft Office, it may not be to your taste. The current download also inexplicably includes the old version of OpenOffice.org, although this can be quickly remedied in the PortableApps menu.

This is a great way to take your apps and documents with you without dragging your computer along with you.

Download PortableApps Suite 1.6.1 in Softonic

ThinkFree Office 4.0.1480.97

ThinkFree Office is an alternative office suite that allows you to open and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations much as you would in Microsoft Office.

ThinkFree Office looks and feels very similar to MS Office and in some aspects seems to have copied it directly, especially in the way the word processor looks. ThinkFree Office consists of three segments. Write (word processor), Show (presentation tool) and Calc (a spreadsheet tool).

The functionality of the components is very similar to MS Office and the free OpenOffice.org although OpenOffice is of course free and ThinkFree is not despite the name. ThinkFree Office does offer one advantage however which is a PDF export function for any document produced in ThinkFree Office. You can also manage documents in ThinkFree Office with your Windows Mobile or Android device for free.

However, although there is an English spell checker, other languages don't seem to be catered for. It also takes extremely long to load on the initial start and there's no way to customize toolbars.

ThinkFree Office looks and feels like Microsoft's office suite although users of OpenOffice get pretty much everything the same and for free.

Download ThinkFree Office 4.0.1480.97 in Softonic

OxygenOffice Professional 3.1

OxygenOffice Professional is an office suite completely based on the famous open source package OpenOffice, but with more templates, cliparts, samples and fonts. All six applications included in OpenOffice are present, but if you click on File, New, Templates and Documents, you’ll find ten categories to choose from with dozens of pre-formatted documents, so you can save time and have more eye-catching works in minutes.

The categories go from Business Correspondence to Presentation and Education. In each one you can find templates for different type of files, like spreadsheet, presentation, andwriting documents.

Although it’s appreciable the effort of providing more materials to work with, OxygenOffice doesn’t add that much to OpenOffice. Having aimed to be more graphically efficient, the program could have improved the general GUI of the Open Office application. In this case it would have been a real plus and people would have had more reason to use it.

OxygenOffice offers many templates and cliparts for you to be more creative while creating personal or professional documents. It would have been nice if the program had improved the GUI also to differentiate the package from OpenOffice though.

Download OxygenOffice Professional 3.1 in Softonic
