Soundflower 1.6.2.1

Have you ever wanted to enable an application to access your soundcard or interact with another application via the soundcard? Soundflower is a free audio system extension that allows applications to pass audio to other applications.

Soundflower emulates the interface of an audio device but allows any audio application to send and receive audio with no other support needed. It opens as one of two audio devices (2ch/16ch). For most people and needs, the 2-channel device is sufficient.

If you want an application to interact with another application via the soundcard, select Soundflower as the output device in the first application and Soundflower as the input device within the second application. If an application does not allow you to specify audio devices, you can make Soundflower the default input or output device inside the Sound panel in the System Preferences, or with the Audio MIDI Setup utility application which is the only slightly tricky part.

You may hear interference at first when you setup an audio channel and if so, the developers recommend increasing the buffer size of both applications (set within each application). Note that if more than one application is sending its output to the same channel, the audio will be mixed.

The practical usages of Soundflower include conducting interviews with both voices. So instead of recording an interview with Skype and only hearing one voice, Soundflower allows you to record both voices for a more professional production. Alternatively, it's useful for routing audio from applications such as iTunes and Spotify to other applications and devices.

Note that this download is for OS X 10.5.8+. You can also download the OS X 10.4 compatible version (Version 1.4.3)..

Soundflower is a remarkably effective and free audio routing solution..

Download Soundflower 1.6.2.1 in Softonic

Growl Fork is a free version of the notification system Growl!. Note that it's based on the old version 1.2 and so lacks some of the newer features in Growl!.

Growl Fork runs works in OS X 10.7 Lion, but adds nothing that isn't in the premium version of Growl! Growl Fork is compatible with most major programs such as Skype, Spotify and iTunes and opens a small dialog window in the top right of your screen when there's a new notification.

There are quite a few customization options and you have a large amount of control over how you want Growl Fork to look such as the size, position and duration of notifications. The developer site is however very limited in terms of support but informs users of the latest updates to Growl Fork which are frequent.

If you've switched to OS X 10.7 Lion and don't want to upgrade to the paid version of Growl, Growl Fork is a very solid replacement.

Download Growl Fork 1.2.2f1 in Softonic

FaceTime for Mac 1.0.2

FaceTime, the excellent video calling application originally introduced for the iPhone 4 has now been released in beta form for the Mac.

Open Facetime and you'll immediately see yourself on screen, and you have to sign in with your Apple account to get started. Once done, FaceTime will sync with your address book, allowing you to immediately call anyone who has the capability.

Calling an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch is easy, once you have your contacts. Image quality is excellent, and the display is pleasantly free of distractions. If the iPhone is rotated, the image also changes on FaceTime for Mac, from landscape to portrait and back. It's a very smooth, simple and comfortable video call experience.

FaceTime is not perfect though. While integration with your contacts on the iPhone makes perfect sense, on the Mac it's less useful. You can't add contacts to FaceTime directly, but have to do it via Address Book. If you don't use Address Book, you have to start. Hopefully integrating contacts will improve in later versions, and perhaps include other services like Facebook. It would also be nice to have FaceTime open without constantly seeing video of yourself!

FaceTime is a very promising video chat application that's certainly the best option between Apple users who are able to use it. However, it still needs more development, and will struggle to knock Skype off its perch unless a Windows version is produced.

Download FaceTime for Mac 1.0.2 in Softonic

MSN Messenger 4.0.1

IMPORTANT: Microsoft is replacing Windows Live Messenger with Skype. All your contacts will be moved automatically. Take a look at The Complete Guide to Moving from Messenger to Skype for more information, alternatives and tips.

MSN Messenger was the original incarnation of the now named Messenger for Mac and it's now been superseded by it. However, if you still have Mac OSX 10.2.8 to 10.3.9 (although Microsoft recommend 10.3.3 or later) this is the only version of MSN for Mac that will work for you.

Firstly, like the latest version of Messenger for Mac, you should know that it doesn't work with webcams. This seems criminal I know, but Microsoft has seen fit only to allow those willing to upgrade to the corporate edition to use a webcam with it. However, the rest of it is pretty much as you'd expect. It is fitted with all the basic functions you'd want from Messenger and the application lets you organize your contacts into different groups, set your status, and use emoticons, etc. New conversations open up in a new window, which you can be moved around anywhere on the screen.

While it's fairly easy to check your Hotmail account thanks to the Mail button at the top of the interface, sending files and images to other users can be a bit slow. MSN Messenger is sufficient as a basic IM client, but we'd recommend upgrading your version of OS X and updating to the latest version of Messenger for Mac. Not only is it more secure, but it will also offer more features and a sleeker interface.

MSN Messenger is a decent if basic IM client for anyone with a Mac OS under 10.3.9 but the lack of webcam function is a major drawback

Download MSN Messenger 4.0.1 in Softonic

Speed Freak 2.8

Speed Freak is probably one of the more unfortunate names to give an application, but from a developer called Big Fat Stinking Software, it's clear that branding and marketing is not a priority.

Speed Freak is actually a very useful tool for prioritizing certain applications to receive more CPU power in order to make them run faster and with more stability. At specified intervals, Speed Freak reprioritizes applications so that the the most active applications get more processor time than background applications. It has a Basic and Advanced mode. In Basic Mode all you have to do is specify a percentage of resources to allocate to front end applications. In Advanced Mode, you have control over how much to allocate to front end, back end and the frequency you want it to check.

This is useful because by default, all processes in OS X have equal priority, which is a bit illogical when you think that some applications - such as Firefox and Parallels, are obviously going to need more than small apps like Adium or Skype. Speed Freak overides this limit using the Unix 'renice' command.

The developer highlights that Speed Freak does not affect graphics card performances, and will show little or no increase in 3D gaming speeds. Download speeds from the Net won't improve either but the time pages take to load could be sped up by giving more resources to your browser.

Since OS X is not designed to re-balance your system like this, you may experience some instability issues with Speed Freak, but overall it seems like a remarkably effective application in the short term.

Download Speed Freak 2.8 in Softonic

macam is a godsend if you want to make your new USB webcam finally work on your Mac.

macam is essentially a driver, which supports a very wide range of webcams. The application can be a little tricky to set up but is the easiest and quickest way to make your USB webcam work. Using the macam interface you can test the video quality of your webcam and adjust elements like contrast, color, sharpness thanks to a few sliders.

However if you really need to make your camera work with an external application like Skype, you'll need to drag the macam component folder you get in the disk image into your Library>Quicktime>folder. The component works with all Quicktime aware applications so once it's installed your webcam should normally be recognized by your Mac.

Even though all the latest Macs already do include iSight, you sometimes happen to need an external webcam, which you can move around and point to different directions. If so, make sure you have the macam driver set up to get it up and working.

Although it might be a little tricky to install, macam is an excellent driver which allows hundreds of webcams to work on a mac. Recommended if you're looking to do some videochatting.

Download macam 0.9.2 in Softonic
