This high tech sports application for Windows Mobile utilizes your GPS connection to record lots of information about the activities you are doing. The large, colorful display in Run.gps Trainer UV displays data such as current speed, average speed, distance traveled, time elapsed, altitude, and calories. Not only this, but a computerized voice can also shout this information to you so you don't have to keep looking at the screen during your workout.

Run.gps Trainer UV is designed for a range of sports, from hiking to skiing, and its calculations vary according to what you're doing. You can even add new sports to the list via the 'Select Sport' menu.

The range of options and features in Run.gps Trainer UV is immense, to the point where it can be a little daunting to start with. Among its features are a heart rate monitor, route planner, and split function. The Training Log & Plan section of the program is incredible. Here, Run.gps Trainer UV automatically records all of your data, noting the date and time of everything you do and putting it into a calendar. You can even sync your planner with your Outlook calendar. Click on an activity entry and it will bring up all the stats for that particular piece of exercise. From here you can upload the results to the web portal, or export the data in a range of formats, including CSV, KML or GPX.

The main problem you'll notice with Run.gps Trainer UV is that it puts quite a strain on your battery because having GPS constantly switched on is pretty power-sapping. That said, if your PDA is on full charge when you start, you should have enough battery life to get you through even the most rigorous training sessions.

The objective of Ball Rush Aqua is simple. You man a spacecraft with which you need to blast through layers of colored blocks. As you shoot special blocks you get new weapons and more points. But you don't have to clear all the squares off the screen, just make your way through to the top and then defeat the boss.

Ball Rush Aqua comes with 128 levels, 13 bonuses, 13 different block types including unpredictable sensors and teleports, thermonuclear bombs and air-cushions. So while it's fast and frenetic it's also very unpredictable. The only guarantee is that your eyes will be watering by the end.

Graphically, Ball Rush Aqua is pretty good, with lots of colors and cool explostion effects. The high-octane stereo soundtrack makes for a fitting accompaniment to the on-screen action.

Using the GPS function of your PDA, SportyPal is able to log lots of data about your activities. The software records you speed, movement, distance traveled, position and calories burned.

Using SportyPal is as simple as choosing New Workout from the main menu then selecting the type of activity you'll be doing. The GPS service will then be launched and the app will kick into action just as you do. The screen will show you the elapsed time and the all the activity data mentioned above. You can pause the timer at any moment by pressing the Select button to set a checkpoint.

All of the runs, cycles, skates, etc. you do are stored in the My Workouts section of SportyPal. Besides getting a rundown of all the stats for each workout you can also view you route in Google Maps and see the evolution of your exercise on a graph. If you register with SportyPal then you're able to upload all of your workouts to the internet.

SportyPal didn't always seem precise during our tests. At times, following a connection drop-out or a change of environment, the stats seem to skew. For instance, at one point I was apparently running at 56mph! The majority of the time, though, the measurements seem pretty accurate.

Although it's not 100% accurate all the time, SportyPal makes for a handy way to track your workouts and log the routes you've taken.

For runners and cyclists, you can record your route, average speed, time elapsed, distance and change in altitude really easily. Save a route and you can repeat it and compete against your previous time, or just set yourself a target.

In addition to this personal information, you can choose to upload it to a website where it can be viewed by anyone, and compared to other users. If you're doing group training, or a known route you can see how you stack up against the competition.

The interface on Marathon is really intuitive and simple, and it's easy to get started. You need to have the Microsoft .Net 3.5 framework installed, but otherwise you shouldn't have any problems. Unfortunately, the application won't let you convert or upload the data to other formats, like KML, which could be displayed to anyone with Google Earth.

If you want to time, and keep track of your movement and speed, Marathon is a simple and neat way to do so.

iDialer is designed to replace your number pad with a more modern looking, iPhone-style skin. Thanks to the large buttons and clear design of the interface, the application is very finger-friendly, improving the speed in which you can tap phone numbers in.

iDialer includes a few basic telephone functions, such as contacts, a start call button, and call history. These are all easily accessible from a menu underneath the number pad. You can even skin this menu, although this involves a lot of faffing around with the settings.ini file, so it's not recommended for inexperienced users.

The main problem I have with iDialer is that it doesn't really add any new functionality to Windows Mobile. Sure, you get a nice iPhone-type keypad, but it's really just a shell whose appearance doesn't extend anywhere else, such as your Contacts, for instance.

If you're desperate to make your Pocket PC look like an iPhone then iDialer might be worth a look, but don't expect any revolutionary changes to the way you make calls.

Opera Mini 5 offers a faster and more powerful browsing experience than any previous version of the app. The small and compact program has borrowed much more from its desktop-based big brother this time, so if you enjoy using Opera on your PC or Mac then you can now look forward to a similarly smooth ride on your mobile.

The user interface in Opera Mini 5 is more usable than ever. This is thanks to the addition of a Speed Dial feature, whereby you can set one-click shortcuts for up to nine of your favorite sites. Just like in the desktop version, these display thumbnail previews of the sites to make things as clear and simple as possible.

Opera Mini utilizes a tab-based interface, meaning that you can load multiple pages at once simply by clicking on the tab icon at the top of the interface. You can thumb through the pages you have open using the left and right direction buttons. Unfortunately, the search bar only features two sources - Google and Wikipedia.

Viewing pages in Opera Mini 5 is a delight. Load times are as impressive as ever thanks to Opera's unique server-side rendering technology.

For those who love to tinker around with stuff, Opera Mini 5 is sure to please because the program is simply rammed with options. You can alter image quality, font size, and fullscreen browsing, and there are a wealth of privacy settings too. The program even has its own password manager.

There are still a few small bugs in this beta version of Opera Mini 5, but hopefully these will be ironed out by the time the final build is released, and it's nothing that seriously interferes with your browsing.

This is a genuinely powerful maintenance toolkit with so many tools included it's hard to know where to start. All of the SKTools features combine to ensure that your registry is clean, your hard drive spic and span and that your RAM is completely flushed clean.

Tools at your disposal in SKTools include those to clear your temporary and cache folders such as IE contents, IE history, Mail attachments, Terminal Server client cache, Opera cache, NetFront cache and custom folders. In addition, SKTools finds and deletes temporary, empty and obsolete files, malicious or corrupted registry keys and values, faulty shortcuts and other files that are deemed to be taking up valuable space on your portable device but are not needed anymore. SKTools also empties recycle bins and deletes temporary files.

The FreeUP RAM tool is probably one of the nicest feature of this toolkit, allowing you to free up to 50K-2M of RAM. It can be set to kick in whenever your RAM drops below a certain point and it can close tasks that are hogging your RAM. Note, however, that FreeUP RAM can sometimes struggle to deal with excessive RAM usage and end up slowing down your system more than speeding it up.

SKTools is a handy set of utilities for Windows Mobile devices that does an efficient job. It must be said though, that part from the RAM cleaner, SKTools doesn't perform anything you wouldn't normally expect from such a package.

One common complaint of almost all mobile devices is that typing on them is a real chore. Cliquick looks to address this issue by providing a new keypad with finger-friendly keys to make typing quicker and easier.

Cliquick claims to improve your typing speed by 100% over the standard Pocket PC keypad. I'm not quite sure it's this much different, but it's definitely faster, for a few different reasons. Firstly, it reconfigures the position of letters on the numeric pad so that the most frequently-used letters are assigned in the first position, meaning you only have to press the button once in order to input the letter. What's more, there are only two characters per key, so in general it requires less taps to enter words.

Another important element of Cliquick is the integrated word auto-completion feature, which is generally pretty accurate. The program will also suggest words as you type, which I personally find a little annoying, but which can be useful for some people.

Cliquick is highly customizable too, allowing you to not only choose from three keypad sizes, but also to apply actions such as vibration when a key is pressed, or typewriter sounds that play when you enter text.

Cliquick is currently only available with English or Russian localizations, so it may be frustrating or even impossible for you to use if you speak a different language to these.

If you want to improve your typing speed on your Pocket PC, then Cliquick comes highly recommended.

If you own a Windows Mobile device and are thinking of buying a sat nav device for your car, then stop for a second. These days you can get a decent GPS navigation software utility for a fraction of the cost of a completely new unit.

NAVIGON MobileNavigator is one such example. This European Edition of the app allows you to find your way around the continent using your Windows Mobile device. You can choose to purchase maps of specific countries, or get a complete Europe-wide set of maps (the 30-day trial version comes with all maps included).

Installation of NAVIGON MobileNavigator is pretty long-winded so make sure you set plenty of time aside for getting it set up. After running the desktop installer on your PC you need to transfer the data onto an SD memory card via a USB reader, that you'll then insert into your PDA. As well as selecting the maps, the NAVIGON MobileNavigator installer also lets you set the language and the voices you want to read the directions. There's a wide range of these, covering lots of nationalities (although for some reason, they're all women). Once installation is complete and you launch NAVIGON MobileNavigator on your mobile, the program will perform a validity check on the Navigon PDA server to see that your trial hasn't expired. So, you have to have a working Internet connection for this to work.

Once all that's out the way, you can finally start enjoying NAVIGON MobileNavigator. The main menu presents you with options for viewing a map of where you are, entering a new destination, or choosing an existing destination from your favorites. There's also a 'Services' section that includes a handy weather service and HRS Hotel reservation service.

Probably the first thing you'll want to do is to enter a journey destination. This couldn't be easier - you just hit 'New Destination' then you can address using the on-screen keyboard to type in the country, city, street, etc. As you type, NAVIGON MobileNavigator gives you suggestions, so it doesn't take long to get this information in. Alternatively, you can search for a point of interest (POIs), or get direct access to services such as petrol stations, parking and restaurants.

The navigation maps themselves are excellent, and are everything you'd expect from a decent sat nav service. You can view maps in 2D or 3D, and there are a few features available to you while the navigation is in progress. For instance, you can toggle between day and night mode, add an interim destination, insert a block, or list all of the POIs on your route. Other features built into the maps are a speed limit, as well as Navigon's Lane Assistance tool that outlines in details the lane layout of junctions.

I found the interface within NAVIGON MobileNavigator to be very easy to use. The buttons are touch-friendly, map movement is smooth and responsive, and the inclusion of a 'Back' button on the toolbar is a stroke of genius.

It may be a little clunkier to set up than an out-of-the box sat nav solution, but at least NAVIGON MobileNavigator will cut down the number of gadgets you have to carry about with you.

Sailing is one of the few sports that hasn't produced scores of 'virtual' versions, so Little Sailor makes for a welcome change.

Little Sailor is a sailing, surfing, and motorboat simulation for Pocket PC devices. The object of the game is to navigate a series of courses against other, AI-controlled, boats. The winner is the boat who passes through all of the gates, in the correct order, in the fastest time. Be careful, because time penalties will be issued if you crash into anything.

Playing Little Sailor is far from easy, especially if you've never sailed before, and there are a number of factors you need to take into account in order to maintain a steady ship. You are in control of the rudder via the hardware cursors or the menu icon, but must also raise or lower the mast, trim the sail, and adjust the throttle. All the while you should be thinking about the direction of the wind and the force of the current. This can make Little Sailor somewhat tricky to start off with, and it takes a while to figure everything out.

Although the graphics are less than impressive, there is plenty of enjoyment to be had from Little Sailor once you get going - I would even say it becomes quite a calming experience. There are lots of different tracks to race on and you can even create your own. Plus, Little Sailor can be customized by tweaking the display, control buttons, speed and distance units, and much more.

If you fancy a different kind of sports sim, Little Sailor offers a strangely captivating alternative to all the pool, soccer, and golf games out there.

If you're a fan of the classic Pipes game genre then you may want to check out X-Mas Pipes, which puts a festive spin on the format.

X-Mas Pipes is a free game that challenges you to make circuits by joining pipes together on a 12 x 12 grid. Simply tap on a section of pipe to rotate it. A pipeline is highlighted in red every time a new piece is joined onto it.

Be warned, X-Mas Pipes is not an easy game and it could drive you mad. That's because every time you move a section a new piece of pipe is added elsewhere on the grid. Pieces are also automatically added every few seconds, and this process speeds up as you score more points.

Disappointingly, X-Mas Pipes isn't actually that Christmassy. In fact, aside from the snow scene background, there isn't really anything festive about it. The music in the game is not even Christmas-related, and the annoying tinny dance beat adds to the hectic insanity of the game.

X-Mas Pipes a challenging puzzle game that will keep you occupied on those cold winter nights, but its frenzied gameplay might send you crazy before you reach new year.

Despite all the latest computer gaming technology and newfangled consoles, it's often the most basic games that stand the test of time - like Uno, for instance.

Pocket Uno is a Windows Mobile version of the classic card game, whereby you need to be the first person to get rid of all your cards. It's a faithful recreation of the original, with the same colors and designs on the cards and exactly the same rules.

It actually takes a little while to get into Pocket Uno. For starters, the program first launches in Esperanto for some bizarre reason. Luckily, you can change this to one of five other languages via the 'Lingvo' option. Also, if you've never played Uno before you might want to read the rules on the Internet or in a book first because there is no help file included.

There are several options available in Pocket Uno to help you customize your games. There are three difficulty levels, controllable animation speed, plus the ability to toggle on and off the background display. Unfortunately though, you can't change the number of computer opponents (it's set at three) and, more crucially, there's no multiplayer option.

Despite these shortcomings, Pocket Uno is still and enjoyable and well-presented version of a card game classic.

This beta version of Opera Mobile 10 for Windows Mobile is the best incarnation of the application to date, improving what was already an excellent browser. Using the program is effortless thanks to Opera Mobile's tabbed interface, which allows you to open multiple pages at the same time and flick through them very quickly, much as you would do in your desktop browser. The inclusion of a Google search bar at the top of the interface makes it easy to get to the content you're looking for without wrestling around in menus, like you're made to in other mobile Web browsers.

Viewing pages in Opera Mobile is very comfortable. You can choose to fit the whole web page in one window or move the selection tool to the part of the page you want to look at and double click to zoom in.

Opera Mobile 10 integrates a bevy of time-saving tools and features, including bookmarks, a password manager, auto-complete addresses, and the ability to save pages for viewing offline. The program now includes the 'Speed Dial' feature from the desktop version of Opera, that gives you one-click access to your favorite pages from the start page.

Speed is something that Opera Mobile has always focused on, and this version of the app includes Opera Turbo, a technology that allows the browser to serve pages much quicker.

All of this combines to make Opera Mobile the ideal solution for anyone who wants to speed up and simplify their mobile Internet usage.

I'm a big fan of the great outdoors and love to go off exploring hills, valleys and streams whenever I can. Unfortunately though, I have no sense of direction, which has led me into a few scrapes in my time.

Step forward Tracky, an application that allows you to plan out routes and track your current position through a highly visual interface. In order to use the program, you need to set your start and finish points, along with any places you want to visit in between.

Using GPS technology you can then take it out with you and get a portable view of your current course and baring at all times. The software downloads maps from Google Maps to provide you with a pretty detailed plan of where you are in the world. The amount of stats and options locked within Tracky are incredible, and you can access all sorts of information about your real-time altitude, speed and distance to the individual marker points.

All this is great and everything, but compared to many Sat Nav systems I've tried, it all seems remarkably fiddly to set up. The zoom control is a trifle cumbersome, GPS configuration can take some messing with, and there is a distinct lack of user help within the program itself.

Although Tracky can certainly help you find your way back down the mountain, the chances are you'll be stuck up there for a while figuring out how to use the darn thing.
