StarForge is an action/<a href="http://en.softonic.com/windows/adventure-games"target="_blank">adventure game that gives players complete control over the game's environment in order to prepare for an alien invasion.

StarForge blends elements from both <a href="http://minecraft.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">Minecraft and the <a href="http://halo.en.softonic.com/"target="_blank">Halo franchises. Just like Minecraft, StarForge has fully manipulable environments. Players can carve tunnels, build platforms and set up weapons to protect their base. StarForge borrows elements from the Halo franchise with its <a href="http://en.softonic.com/windows/war"target="_blank">first person shooter aesthetic, as well as having vehicles in the game that resemble those in Halo. Players can even fly into space, opening up a whole new mechanic to the game.

Players will spend a majority of their time preparing for the alien onslaught. Prepare your base by building up walls, putting up spotlights, and placing weapons for the best defense. From the very beginning, all weapons and structures are available to you to build up your base. While Minecraft has Creepers, StarForge has face-eating flying aliens.

Performance and graphics largely depend on your machine. This early alpha of the game requires a decently powerful computer to render its lush environments and to support its rag doll physics. The graphics in StarForge are stunningly beautiful, but players will find that they can also look crunchy at times.

Overall, StarForge is a very promising game with an already-huge fan base. The developers have the right idea and should be able to improve performance and game play in future versions.

Download StarForge 0.100 Very Early Alpha in Softonic

Serious Sam 3: BFE

Big, stupid and totally over the top, Serious Sam 3: BFE is a great way to enjoy the old run and gun style of 3D shoot 'em ups from the pre-<taglink type="program" country="en" id="30125">Halo</taglink> years. Overwhelming hordes of monsters to kill, using old school pack peddling, strafing and well timed melee hits. It's back to the 90s, but in glorious HD.

How is Serious Sam 3: BFE different?

For ten years, we have got used to FPS games where using cover is essential. Find cover, kill enemies, find next cover, shoot more enemies. Halo is credited with starting this trend, and today's biggest shooters like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="329877">Modern Warfare 3</taglink> still adhere to it.
In Serious Sam 3: BFE, you basically don't use cover. There is lots of space for much of the game, and you will have to use to dodge attacks and enemies. Sam will often be overrun by huge waves of monsters; instead of hiding behind a rock to pick them off, you'll have to strafe and backpedal while taking out the gruesome bad guys. It's unsubtle, and can be very tough going.

A challenge to get into

Serious Sam 3: BFE starts off a little slow in our opinion. Once you have progressed enough to have an impressive arsenal at your disposal, the over the top explosive fun really impresses. However, starting out is challenging, you'll find ammo lacking and health far to easy to lose!

Multiplayer

On PC, there are excellent multiplayer modes. Survival mode, which lets up to 16 players play cooperatively against ever increasing odds is especially fun. There is also up to four player split-screen mode.

Conclusion

Serious Sam 3: BFE saves the planet in jeans and t-shirt, while carrying as many weapons as you need. It's not about realism, but about fun. The old school action is refreshing, but there are a few areas where it could have been modernized, and the difficulty settings could be more subtle.

Download Serious Sam 3: BFE in Softonic

The logo for the games is right at center at the bottom of the wallpaper, and Microsoft's own logo is barely visible at the bottom right. The left side of the wallpaper is taken up mostly with one of the familiar troopers of the game, in magnificent detail.

Halo 3: ODST - Wallpaper's left side is darker but less busy, with just an out of focus background and some nice, dark details at the bottom.

Pixel Force: Halo is a retro 'demake' of the iconic Xbox series, re-imagined as an 80s Nintendo Entertainment System game.

Same story, one less dimension

Following the story of the first game in the series, in Pixel Force: Halo you play Master Chief, the human soldier who has to prevent the alien Covenent from discovering the location of Earth. The bright colors of this 8-bit version actually look really good, and reminiscent of the 3D original. As well as the side scrolling platform-shooting element, there are top-down vehicle segments to break up the gameplay.

Yesterday's gameplay, today's difficulty

Pixel Force: Halo is a fun concept, and if you enjoy platform shooters like the classic Commando, you'll enjoy this. The main criticism of Pixel Force: Halo is that it's a little easy, although if you complete the game you unlock a much harder 'Legendary' mode.

Conclusion

Developer Eric Ruth has again created a fun and loving demake of a classic title.
Halo: Combat Evolved

Halo: Combat Evolved, the first game in the massively successful Halo series, was one of only two to be released on PC,and despite its age it continues to be popular today.

Halo: Combat Evolved is a sci-fi first person shooter, featuring an epic solo campaign and fast and furious online multiplayer. While it dates from 2001, Halo: Combat Evolved looks surprisingly good. It won't trouble the high definition games of today, but the art style suited the technology available a decade ago.

The single player demo gives you a good feel for the dynamic combat in the main campaign, but its the free Halo: Combat Evolved online multiplayer demo that probably keeps players coming back after so many years. Controls will be familiar to anyone who has played an FPS, so it's easy to pick up, and the game modes are easy to understand.

There is just one map to play on multiplayer in this demo, but it's fun to play in, and you can always find rooms with players to join. With the varied weapons and vehicles, that Halo will run smoothly on almost any of today's PCs is just the icing on the cake!

Halo: Combat Evolved is a classic shooter, and this demo is an excellent source of free online multiplayer fun.

Download Halo: Combat Evolved in Softonic

Darkest of Days Demo

Darkest of Days takes historical battles, and spices them up with weapons of the future. Imagine the Battle of Little Bighorn, with the weaponry from Halo.

The story is time traveling nonsense, but enjoyable none the less. You are fighting alongside General Custer, wounded, when all of a sudden the fabric of time is ruptured, and an agent from the future saves you, and takes you to their time. Here, you are told of a missing time traveler, who is suspected of tampering with historical events. You are trained, and sent back to famous battles to put things right.

Graphically, Darkest of Days does look a little old fashioned, but acceptable. The animation of talking faces is pretty basic, and close up the textures aren't too pretty. The sound is good, although some of the voice acting is a bit odd. The gameplay is a strange mix of traditional first person shooter (FPS), and "on rails" shooter. The levels in the demo are highly scripted, so there's not much you can do except what you are told to - just make sure you don't die.

The different weaponry available really change the gameplay too, and the experience of using a futuristic machine gun against a US civil war age army is undoubtedly cool!

Darkest of Days is a quirky FPS, but has some great moments in it, and the lengthy demo is definitely worth playing through.

Download Darkest of Days Demo in Softonic

Take control once again of Master Chief and battle against the Covenant invaders.

If the generic sci-fi story of the original Halo games was obscured by their ambition and scale compared to older shooters, it certainly isn't in a 2D 16-bit era landscape. You control the suited space marine, and shoot your way through a variety of forgettable alien onslaughts.

The graphics, as mentioned, are very 1990s, and although they have clearly been created with some care they seem uninspired. Control is via the keyboard and mouse, aiming and firing with the mouse, and movement and other things with the keyboard. It's quite a good system, and you can configure the keys as you like, which is useful.

Gameplay itself is a mixed bag. The sound effects are excellent, with great weapon effects, but the combat is untidy - you can't always see alien gunfire which makes avoiding it awkward!

Halo may have been a landmark 3D game, but Halo Zero does not make the same impact in the world of 2D platform shooters. It's probably one for hardcore Halo fans only.

Download Halo Zero 1.8.6.3 Final in Softonic

This peculiar version is not a new installment of the game but more a 2D conversion of the previous three. Thankfully it includes the same weapons, same enemies, and an enormous amount of levels to negotiate.

Hell on Earth Trilogy certainly presents a large enough challenge to keep you coming back for more for some time. Compared to the originals, however, the 2D action is far less emmersive and you don't get the same fear factor as turning a dark corner to be welcomed by a room full of flesh-eating aliens in this side-scrolling affair. Nevertheless this game is free and enjoyable in its own right.

Download Halo: Hell on Earth Trilogy in Softonic

FireHawk PC 1.21

FireHawk is one of those unashamedly fun, silly games that are just perfect for mobile phones. It's a classic-style arcade shooter, in which you pilot an aircraft and destroy all enemies in your path. Your plane spits out bullets and bombs constantly, so no need to hit a 'fire' key. In fact, it's pretty difficult not to destroy your first few enemies and, at first, the game feels like it's a bit too easy. As things progress, however, the game gets harder and the bosses get nastier! In terms of graphics, FireHawk performs well, but not brilliantly. The game's sound effects are OK but the repetitive electronic soundtrack is pretty irritating. Luckily, the music and SFX volume can be changed separately.

Unfortunately, FireHawk doesn't translate very well to a Windows desktop. The gameplay is still undeniably fun and addictive but the graphics, sounds, controls and menus have had nothing changed in their move from smartphone to PC. In fact, the game menu still includes a setting for 'Vibrate' - not a feature you find on many computers.
