MovieSherlock is an all-in-one YouTube downloader and converter. It allows you to search, download, and convert YouTube movies.

There are three versions of MovieSherlock: Lite, Full and Pro. You can find a comparison table of differences between the different versions on the developer site. Most of the differences between the versions regard the convenience of inserting URLs and the ability to download from Vimeo or not.

MovieSherlock allows you to download any video from YouTube and convert it on your Mac to a high-quality MP4 video that is playable in iTunes or your favorite video player. MovieSherlock supports both HD (High Definition) and SD (Standard Definition) video from YouTube. However, only the Full and Pro version support HD and only the Pro version supports downloading from Vimeo.

The Lite version also lacks an instant transfer feature which automatically moves downloaded videos to iTunes. All versions support multiple downloads so you can download as many YouTube videos as your bandwidth will allow.

MovieSherlock is a powerful all-in-one video converter and downloader for Macs.

Download MovieSherlock Pro 4.8.3 in Softonic

The first thing you'll notice about Songbird is its resemblance to the iTunes interface, which means that if you've ever used iTunes you won't have any problem in learning how to use Songbird.

Songbird automatically imports your music files from a selected folder, monitors that folder for future music additions, organizes your music in a handy, easily browsable catalog, is compatible with iTunes and Last.fm libraries, can be controlled from any other app thanks to global hotkeys and also supports Last.fm scrobbling. It also includes album art and a simple equalizer.

Songbird is such a complete tool that's hard to find negative sides to it.
GTA: San Andreas 1.02

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the third 3D game in the GTA series, taking the action from Vice City's 80s to a 90s' hip hop world of hood violence and gangsters.

You play as Carl Johnson, returning to his home of Los Santos after five years away. Plenty has changed over the years, and Carl sets about getting his gang's reputation and influence back. GTA: San Andreas' gameplay is classic GTA - tons of cinematic cut scenes, varied missions and lots of mini games, spread over a free roaming sandbox world.

What defines GTA: San Andreas more than anything is the scale. It's hugely ambitious, set in a massive state featuring three big cities, and plenty of countryside. The campaign is enormous, and there is plenty more to do beside. The storyline, a rags to riches tale, may not be massively original but it's well told with excellent acting and lots of memorable and funny characters. The radio stations are excellent, with a great mix of 90s music and hilarious adverts.

There are points where GTA: San Andreas will be frustrating for some. Racing cars in the countryside can be pretty slippy for instance, and building up Carl's lungs for swimming underwater takes too long. Some of the missions are a little annoying too, but hey are eclipsed by the best moments of the game and the amount of fun you can have roaming the state, enjoying the sites and creating havoc!

GTA: San Andreas is a milestone in sandbox gaming. It's violent and very much an adult game, and while it has gameplay flaws, the overall achievement and the fun you can have playing are pretty much unbeatable.

Download GTA: San Andreas 1.02 in Softonic

RealPlayer used to be an essential application for streaming media content from the web, but you can live without it today. It is still a fully featured <a href="http://en.softonic.com/mac/audio-players"target="_blank">media player however, with library, sharing, converting and downloading features.

It is indeed bloated and often intrusive but RealPlayer has a lot of functionality - it can do a hell of a lot from streaming radio and video to burning CD's but it's often slow and cumbersome. In this latest release of RealPlayer, there is an included conversion program with a bunch of different devices it can re-encode video for. This is really handy if you want to take some videos on your portable device. Conversions in RealPlayer take a while, so be patient.

The most recent incarnation RealPlayer SP has done much to solve stability and streaming problems and also includes ways to share videos on mobile devices as well as download videos that are absent from RealPlayer. There's also a handy integrated RealPlayer Downloader for downloading RealPlayer clips for viewing later or sharing with friends.

In saying this, RealPlayer isn't bad at all. It's comparable to <a href="windows-media-player.en.softonic.com/mac"target="_blank">Windows Media Player as they both have some impressive ways of organizing your music and for me the best feature is the CD burner which is one of the easiest burners I've ever used.

RealPlayer is a bit of a bloated media player, which is slower and less user friendly than the competition but includes handy downloading and conversion features that may benefit some users.

Download RealPlayer Gold 12.0.0 1725 in Softonic

theBlu is an interactive <a href="http://en.softonic.com/mac/screensavers"target="_blank">screensaver that lets you explore the oceans and contribute to preserving the oceans and its inhabitants.

Although theBlu is a screensaver, you can still launch it as an app if you don't want to wait for the screensaver to activate. The app greats you with soothing music and an ocean expanse. You can create an account with theBlu or you can use <a href="http://facebook.en.softonic.com/web-apps"target="_blank">Facebook Connect to log in. Once you do, you have the option to purchase more fish and habitats. You also have the option to take snapshots and share your discoveries with your friends.

Much of your time in theBlu will be spent wandering aimlessly, looking for new fish and plants to learn about. theBlu keeps track of the plants and animals you find in a log book, which is like an achievement of sorts. While there are actually no objectives in theBlu, the world is so immersive that users won't really require an objective.

The free version of theBlu comes with a limited amount of fish and habitats that you can unlock. The full version will include exclusive habitats and fish. theBlu uses a credit system so you can purchase credits with real money. Don't worry though, your money will be well spent as part of the profits go to organizations for oceanic conservation. There is no other way to gain more credits other than purchasing them.

While theBlu is entertaining for the most part, it could use with some more interactive media like audio and video information about the fish. It's nice to see the ocean and fish rendered in <a href="http://en.softonic.com/mac/modeling-3d-design"target="_blank">3D but it's not the same as watching a video of what things look like in real life. If you want to model items in the app, you can join theBlu's development community on their site.

Overall, theBlu is an innovative screensaver and application that helps raise awareness for ocean preservation.

Download theBlu beta v2.1.2 in Softonic

Webbla 1.5.0.22

If there's one thing I absolutely hate about my default browser Firefox, it's the way it handles bookmarking. It's the management of them that really annoys me.

I mean, why can't I just delete a bookmark or add a folder without having to go into the Bookmarks Manager? I was therefore quite keen on trying Webbla as a more intuitive and most importantly, visual bookmarks manager. If you like the way iTunes and iPhoto handle your music and photos, then you'll probably really like Webbla. Not only does it allow you to organize bookmarks visually, but it also allows you to track updates on your favorite sites. It doesn't matter which browser you use because it works across the spectrum including Camino, Firefox, OmniWeb, Opera, Safari and more. The problem however, is getting started with it.

From the start, there should be a wizard that automatically detects your default browser and asks if you want to import your Bookmarks from that browser. But no, you have to select "Import" and then try and manually browse to your bookmarks folder on your hard drive. This can be no easy task as I soon found out. However, once you do manage to import them, it is quite nice to flick through them visually and those that have recently been updated will be flagged by Webbla.

Webbla is very similar to Safari 4's coverflow system of organizing bookmarks so Safari users won't find much to shout about in Webbla. Other browser users may find it useful but it should be much easier to get started.

Download Webbla 1.5.0.22 in Softonic

Bioshock is a first-person shooter that mixes horror with underwater action to deliver a surprisingly good game.

Bioshock is set in 1960 where you play the role of a plane crash survivor named Jack who must explore the underwater city of Rapture avoiding mutilation by the monsters and mechanical drones that lurk in it. Bioshock combines role-playing survival with elements if the game System Shock and has been praised for its "morally driven storyline", immersive environment and back story.

The game is easy to control, with the usual WASD keyboard combination. Bioshock offers superb quality graphics with some pumping music to get your adrenalin flowing. This atmosphere sucks you in and and you'll soon become immersed in the world of Rapture. The only thing to be careful with is that Bioshock is very heavy on your CPU and graphics cards and so you may find that older generation Macs may struggle with it.

In addition, for reasons beyond our control, we can only offer you the direct download of the installation file from the publisher site. You'll need a torrent client to download the installation file. We recommend using <taglink type="program" country="en" id="43821">Transmission</taglink>.

Bioshock is a superb first-person shooter that will get you gripped sooner than you think.

Download Bioshock in Softonic

I easily consider it one of the best in its category thanks to its flexibility and GUI.

You have a number of ways to organize your books including smart lists, tags or filters. Finding any book is also very easy thanks to advanced search capabilities.

Importing books is what worries librarians most though, and it's where Booxter gets it right. You can import from different types of applications or text files and export your lists in a number of ways including CSV and HTML or even to your iPod.

Booxter also offers special features that really separate it from the rest of the catalogers. There's a fun little quiz game to test how much you know about your collection and keeping track of books lent is very intuitive.

Booxter seems to have no trouble handling large libraries and can now even support movies, music and comic books. One minor drawback is that it won't save manually imported cover pictures.

Download Booxter 2.7 in Softonic

Note that Encore requires a MIDI interface and a MIDI keyboard if you want to record live music with it. In addition, the developers recommend using an ink-jet or laser-quality printer for best results when printing-out your compositions.

However, whether you play directly into Encore or transcribe your MIDI files, most users agree that the results are very elegant and professional. Encore allows musicians to extract parts, transpose them for different instruments and basically represent music as close to the original idea as possible. Encore allows a high degree of control of composition via on-screen palettes which let you enter the correct notes or graphics including lyrics and any other text you may want to add.

As a guitar enthusiast, I was interested by the option to instantly transcribe music into guitar tablature with correct fingering and guitar fret diagrams although in the end, I couldn't quite work it out. This is why as good as Encore is, it's still a bit tricky for newcomers. Some users have complained that the latest version is also subject to several bugs compared to previous releases although there is a forum on the developer site for addressing such problems.

For professional musicians writing compositions,Encore is one of the simplest composition tool out there although it still takes some grasping for beginners.

Download Encore 5.0.6 in Softonic

A disproportionate number of programs scrape the surface and don’t provide the flexibility, depth or support that you need to be able to go beyond being a novice.

Thankfully, in Guitar Pro you will find a complete tool that will take you from tuning the guitar, through learning the scales and as far as composing your own sheet music. The main interface is a daunting array of buttons on both the top and bottom of the window. On further inspection it becomes clear that the majority are involved with composing and each one refers to a very specific element. With this in mind, there are actually very few that you need to be familiar with to get going and as your guitar skills progress, so too will your familiarity with the software.

Some of the gizmos included in the software can actually come in useful and let you do everything from one place. The digital guitar tuner and the metronome are extremely handy to have and save you the bother of going out to buy them or of searching through your cluttered room for either. Once prepared, you can get started on the individual note library that lets you visualize the fingering as well as listen to how they should sound. Moving on, you can practice the large variety of scales that each come with a plethora of variations.

Getting the basics down is all well and good, but when it comes to composing or playing sheet music, Guitar Pro has it licked. Using the virtual keyboard or guitar, although tedious, will yield results when you want to compose something of your own, but for optimum results you can hook up your own MIDI device (such as a keyboard) and get cracking on tracks that are as simple or complex as you want. The extra dimension of a separate MIDI device lets you get ideas down much quicker while also giving you the ability to experiment with variations of a piece.

It’s difficult to point out faults with Guitar Pro, but having mentioned the cluttered interface, it could do with a facelift in the form of tabs or something similar that would better categorize and clean up the buttons scattered around the screen. The help file covers each topic without going into excruciating detail and if you’re after some extra resources, you’ll find tablatures, lessons and exercises on the Guitar Pro web site.

Boxee 0.9.23.15885

Boxee is a revision of the media center XBMC, with a much newer look, feel and lots more glossy features. It's designed as a one-stop media centre that is best controlled by a remote control on a big screen.

Using it on a keyboard on your Mac screen is possible but as I found, becomes a headache very quickly. For a start, annoyingly you can only use it in full-screen mode. As soon as you start Boxee, it darkens the screen and takes over the whole thing. The only way to get back to your desktop is to shut it down, which is a real pain. The interface at least is very good looking and it feels like much more than your average media center.

When you first run Boxee, it will start scanning your local Movies, Music and Pictures folders looking for media. In doing so, it will enable you to see cover art, reviews and synopsis related to your music and movies. Your content will be automatically shared unless you go to the Boxee homepage and change your settings.

If you've got an Apple remote, then I highly advise using it as the mouse cursor disappears completely and you have no control over the keyboard. Moving the mouse about does select different options but with no cursor so it's a bit like fumbling around in the dark. To activate the remote, go to Settings>System>Apple Remote and enable 'Always Running'. Note though, that this may mean that the Apple Remote does not work with other apps while using Boxee.

I can see how Boxee could be useful for someone who watches a lot of video content online. For instance, you can link it to Netflix, Hulu and YouTube etc to watch content from those sites although you'd still need to be able to do it on a big screen and with the remote to make it worthwhile.

If you've got a big screen or want a complete change from Frontrow, Boxee is a nice idea but if you don't, you won't find much to get excited about.

Download Boxee 0.9.23.15885 in Softonic

iScrobbler is an alternative scrobbling client for OS X that integrates with musical social networking site last.fm.

The reason the developers have come up with iScrobbler is because the official Mac client is often problematic, buggy and iScrobbler seems to be a lot smoother. Now that the latest version can play radio stations in iTunes, some people have done away with the official client completely.

The great thing about iScrobbler is that it's not as memory hogging as the official client and all round generally lightweight. It does however seem a lot more intrusive than the official client. For example, iScrobbler notes exactly how long you've been listening to a certain track for - why would others want or need to know that? I don't want the world to know that I've been listening to Pato Banton for the past 6 hours.

Other than that, iScrobbler is an extremely good alternative to the official Last.fm client - get scrobbling with it today.

Download iScrobbler 2.2 in Softonic

In the Mood 0.8.3

Are you one of those people that likes to share what you're listening to in iTunes with other users?

Personally I'm not because frankly, I'd be embarrassed if anyone other than my mum knew I was listening to Cliff Richard. If you've got a much cooler music collection though, then you might find In The Mood a great way of transmitting what you're listening to in iTunes to several applications at once. These are namely, <taglink type="program" country="en" id="23473">Adium</taglink>, <taglink type="program" country="en" id="35985">Skype</taglink> and iChat.

When you install In The Mood, you'll receive an API access message from each application warning you that In The Mood wants to access them. Just click 'OK', and In The Mood will immediately start transmitting your currently-playing iTunes track to each app. You can also pre-configure nine other customized status messages that you can switch between at any time if you'd rather not display what you're listening to.

In The Mood is easy to configure and can even transmit the iTunes track you are listening to to sites such as Blip.fm, FriendFeed and Jaiku. It's a nice idea although I'm surprised that a client such as MSN Messenger has been left out. I guess the developer assumes that most savvy Mac users will use Adium to log onto it.

In The Mood is a great application for music lovers who want to share what they're listening to with Skype, Adium and iChat users.

Download In the Mood 0.8.3 in Softonic

Cuberok 0.0.11

Cuberok is a music player based on the popular Amarok application.

Cuberok allows you to listen to music stored locally on your hard disk plus with streaming services such as Magnatune and Jamendo. The program can automatically create playlists and organize your music collection based on style, artist, and the albums listed on the labels. It can also retrieve information about your favorite artists from the Internet.

I like the fact that Cuberok is extremely lightweight and integrates with sites such as Last.fm, Libre.fm and those mentioned above. In the case of Last.fm, it even downloads album covers and data, although it doesn't do this with the others. The overall look and feel of Cuberok is a bit flimsy and basic compared to big hitters such as iTunes. However, this is offset somewhat by how lightweight it is - surely one of the least intrusive music players out there.

If you're a big Last.fm, Libre.fm, Magnatune or Jamendo user and also pine for an Amarok clone on Mac, you'll certainly be pleased with Cuberok.

Download Cuberok 0.0.11 in Softonic

TuneConnect 2.1

If you've ever needed to control iTunes on another Mac over a local area network then TuneConnect could be your answer.

TuneConnect allows you to control your music simply, quickly, and easily, from anywhere on a network, so it doesn't really matter which machine your iTunes music is stored on. You can even scrobble your tracks to Last.fm, although this requires a separate file (available to download from the developer's site).

When you install TuneConnect, you also need to install the TuneConnect server on the machine that you want to control. You'll also need to activate Remote Apple Events on your own machine for communication to take place.

When you open it for the first time, TuneConnect searches for connected devices and then allows you to select which ones are available. Alternatively, you can enter a computer name or IP address, including the port access number to control iTunes on another machine.

Then you're ready to go. The tracks you're playing are displayed in the TuneConnect interface and you can perform all the basic control functions you would if you were using iTunes on your own machine. Some users have reported that TuneConnect has been disabled sometimes when iTunes updates, so if you are going to rely on it, bear this in mind the next time you update.

For anyone wanting to control iTunes on another network machines, TuneConnect is a simple and elegant solution.

Download TuneConnect 2.1 in Softonic
