The basics of SimCity have remained the same since the first game back in 1988. You build your city from scratch, choosing a location, then planning the different areas while making sure there are enough utilities and amenities to keep the population happy and healthy.

Single or multiplayer?

When you start a game, you can join a populated region, which will have other online players, or to start a fresh region yourself. Cities are limited in size, and SimCity works best when you have multiple cities that cooperate and specialize.

Whether you prefer to play alone or with others, it's enjoyable, but it's clearly designed more with multiplayer in mind. You cannot play without being connected to EA's servers, and while we expect early reliability problems to be resolved, never being able to play offline is a shame.

Playing the game

SimCity's interface is excellent. A beautifully designed thing that lets you do everything, while allowing you to enjoy the impressive views of your creation. The amount of information and detail available is incredible, and really gives your city the feeling of being alive.

You can learn about every individual resident's wishes and concerns, and pull up statistics on pretty much anything about the development of your city. You can also check out neighbors to see how they might complement you or offer you services.

Graphics and sound

The graphics cannot be faulted. SimCity just looks great, and the filters you can add mean you can make the game look the way you want. When you're zoomed in, the detail and animation is great, and even each resident seems to have somewhat of a personality. Everything is accompanied by pleasant background music and ambient effects.

Conclusion

SimCity is an excellent and very impressive game. But it's not quite the same as it used to be. This SimCity thrives in multiplayer games, and whether you enjoy that will dictate to an extent how much you like the game.

The teething problems with servers won't last, but even reliable servers won't allow you to play the game on your laptop away from an internet connection.

Monopoly's a wonderful board game. It combines accounting and real estate principles with the competitive nature of a classic board game. In this version of the game, the INT in Monopoly INT presumably stands for "international," as the different place markers on the virtual board game are different countries. You can choose to play with anywhere between two and six players and name their accounts accordingly.

Starting the game isn't a problem. Much like the traditional game, you roll the dice to see where to place your player. Monopoly INT only starts to get confusing when you actually land on a country and want to purchase property on it. While Monopoly INT does have rules that come with the game, it is clear the developer's first language is not English. The directions are accordingly difficult to understand in some areas.

In order to actually purchase property in Monopoly INT, you need to click on the country's flag on the game board, then on your playing piece's marker, and then again on the country's flag. It's meticulous and confusing to figure out. On top of that, the board is also a little difficult to read. True to the interface of the actual board game, Monopoly INT's board surface is shaped like a square and consequently has the names of the countries at the top of the board written upside down. While this might work fine for an actual game board, it just makes things more difficult to read on the computer. In addition, there's no option to play against the computer or with another player remotely online, greatly reducing Monopoly INT's usability.

Monopoly INT is an entirely average game that only really works if you have a friend to play with offline.

Ski Challenge is always popular as the winter sports season gets underway. However, don't be in a hurry to play this game as there's quite a lot of configuration and updating to do before you start. After the installer has run, there's a series of automatic updates that take place before you can actually access the game itself.

Ski Challenge automatically opens in full screen mode although you can switch it to windowed mode by clicking Manual in the main menu and turning-off full-screen mode.From the start, it's plain to see that Ski Challenge is a high quality skiing simulation with excellent graphics. To begin with you are offered the chance to practice or choose from pistes from around the world. However, you're only allowed to choose Val d'Isere to start with as the others are shaded out for some reason. You can also choose the weather conditions and various other configurations which make it a little tedious and frustrating before you actually get to do any skiing.

The controls in Ski Challenge are very simple - use the arrow keys to direct your skier and the up arrow key to make him go faster. A ghost shadow figure shows you where you should be on the track and you should try and stick as closely to him as possible. The entire training is conducted in offline mode so you don't need an internet connection to do so but competitions are online as scores are uploaded to a central database. This means that in race mode, you can't just race when you want because Ski Challenge follows a schedule of online races so you have to wait until a qualifying slot opens up for you.

This ability to race against other competitors and win real prizes is probably one of the most attractive elements for devotees. It adds and added level of realism to the already excellent graphics and game play. Note that you have to sign-up for a Ski Challenge account to enjoy online challenges. Unfortunately, much of the information on the Ski Challenge developer website regarding the game is in German although in-game, English is used throughout.

The controls are tricky to master at first and as in real life, you'll spend more time flying down the hill on your back than on your skis but if you persevere, Ski Challenge is an absorbing and addictive simulator, especially if you compete online.

The BullGuard Internet Security download and installation process is relatively fast and painless, although the app does force you to use a downloader rather than providing an executable file. There's no visible set-up scan, and you'll have to wait to until the suite is installed before you can customize anything. That said, some users will appreciate the speed and ease of this process.

Appearance

Once installed, BullGuard Internet Security has a very simple interface. In fact, it may be too simple - the splashscreen is just a huge green button and an assurance that your computer is safe. The second tab, Help and Support, gives you access to all the ways of getting a helping hand with the program, something that the developers seem to place a high premium on and which will, no doubt, be appreciated by less technical users.

The final tab, Control Panel, gives you access to all of BullGuard Internet Security's options. Here you'll find the individual options that make up each of the focus areas - PC Protection, Data Protection, Family Protection and PC Tune Up. All these sections are easy to access and give you a clear vision of all the safeguards in place.

Use

With its comprehensive selection of all-round tools, BullGuard Internet Security seems to be firmly aimed at family users with basic technical knowledge. It covers almost any eventuality and in tests performed well, catching even small vulnerabilities. In short, BullGuard Internet Security provides users with a one-stop shop for most online and offline security needs.

That said, there was something about BullGuard Internet Security that left us somewhat unenthusiastic. For a start, the installation lacks customization and extras, while the interface is very plain and navigation is unintuitive. For example, we were initially unwilling to hit BullGuard Internet Security's Run button for fear we would set off an unwanted scan! You can add that to the fact that the app isn't skinnable and lacks different user experience modes.

Although it's true that from a feature perspective, BullGuard Internet Security does cover all it should, we found some features to be patchy and lacking. You can run a scan from the context menu, for example, but nothing else, and the Game Mode is infuriatingly hard to access and certainly not something you can casually toggle mid-game. BullGuard Internet Security also skimps when it comes to information about resources and updates.

In all, BullGuard Internet Security tries to be all things to all people but strictly speaking doesn't quite make the grade. It isn't simplified enough for non-experienced users, and lacks the wizards and options needed to make things really easy. At the same time, it lacks the multi-layered advanced functions and bells and whistles that more advanced users tend to like.

BullGuard Internet Security is a solid all in one security program, but seems unsure of its target audience.
