Barcodes have been around for a while and almost all products have them. i-nigma is designed to let you scan any item's barcode, then perform a search on Amazon or Google for the product to give you more info and display reviews.

With i-nigma running you just need to hover over the barcode with your phone or Pocket PC's camera and once it comes into focus the unique ID number will be recognized and the i-nigma Shopper service will be launched, displaying details garnered from Google or Amazon. Be warned that i-nigma isn't foolproof and the scanned code doesn't always display a result.

Scanning QR codes

i-nigma is also compatible with the more recently introduced QR codes. These are often used on websites to link to mobile software downloads or printed on business cards to give you instant access to someone's contact details.

Scanning business cards works very well in i-nigma. You just point the camera at the QR code and, provided it's lined up within the box, it will automatically read the code. Once the contact information is displayed you will get the option to save it as a contact or dial the phone number. With application downloads, you hold the camera to the QR code on the website and after a few seconds you'll be prompted to install it on your phone.

i-nigma has a raft of features and settings to make it even more useful. It lets you manually type codes if the scanner hasn't worked properly. You can view a history of scanned products, share codes with friends via SMS and favorite certain codes.

It might not always find the scanned item, but when i-nigma works, it is a very impressive little tool.

If you find yourself constantly bothered by unwanted calls from salesmen, ex-partners or annoying friends, Pocket Call Blocker is worth a look. It allows you to set up filters to automatically reject calls and text messages from specified phone numbers.

Pocket Call Blocker contains a range of different filtering options. You can choose to filter by number, enter wildcard numbers, contact/non-contact numbers, or all numbers. The only filtering option it lacks is the ability to create a whitelist of accepted numbers (aside selecting all non-contacts).

There are two call blocking settings available in Pocket Call Blocker: to hang up or mute the call. The application keeps a log of all calls that have been blocked, so you can see exactly what you've missed at any time.

The user interface in Pocket Call Blocker could be better. The main screen is quite ugly, and it's annoying that you can't access the rule configuration from the main menu (you have to select the Rules tab first, then use the menu on this screen). That said, the ability to run Pocket Call Blocker in the background makes it a very unobtrusive app, which you can forget about once you've configured it.

One feature lacking from Pocket Call Blocker that appears in some other call blocking apps is the ability to set personalized SMS responses for people whose text messages get blocked by the program.

On the whole though, Pocket Call Blocker offers a reliable way to prevent unwanted calls and messages getting through to you.

Using the GPS function of your Smartphone, SportyPal is able to log lots of data about your activities. The software records your speed, movement, distance traveled, position and calories burned.

Using SportyPal is as simple as choosing New Workout from the main menu then selecting the type of activity you'll be doing. The GPS service will then be launched and the app will kick into action just as you do. The screen will show you the elapsed time and the all the activity data mentioned above. You can pause the timer at any moment by pressing the Select button to set a checkpoint.

All of the runs, cycles, skates, etc. you do are stored in the My Workouts section of SportyPal. Besides getting a rundown of all the stats for each workout you can also view your route in Google Maps and see the evolution of your exercise on a graph. If you register with SportyPal then you're able to upload all of your workouts to the internet.

SportyPal didn't always seem precise during our tests. At times, following a connection drop-out or a change of environment, the stats seem to skew. For instance, at one point I was apparently running at 56mph! The majority of the time, though, the measurements seem pretty accurate.

Although it's not 100% accurate all the time, SportyPal makes for a handy way to track your workouts and log the routes you've taken.

Luckily, if you install Elecont Weather on your Smartphone, you shouldn't get caught unprepared again. This Windows Mobile application provides you with 10-day, up-to-the-hour forecasts forecasts for more than 51,000 different cities across the World, using weather data from the WSI Corp.

Elecont Weather displays forecasts for the next 10 days from a new panel on your Today screen. Each day is given a weather icon and a temperature and scrolling forward and backwards through the days is done by clicking on the left and right arrows. It makes for a really neat, at-a-glance view of the climate for the next few days. Best of all, it's constantly updated, so you can be sure that the information is pretty accurate.

Opening up the Elecont Weather application itself offers you the chance to add new cities to your profile, rename cities, and perform live updates. The Options menu lets you play around with all manner of settings, including customizing the Today screen view, unit of measurement, background, language, icons, animations, and more. The 'Details' section even lets you mess around with fonts, sizes and text colors.

I must say that I found the user interface within Elecont Weather a little irritating. The layout and structure of the Options menu is a bit confusing, and when adding a city you need to choose the country first, rather than just being able to type the name of the city and access the suggestions list straight away.

On the whole though, Elecont Weather provides a clear and accurate way to check the forecast for the coming days.

This terrible state of affairs has now been remedied thanks to Remote Control for Windows Mobile.

The program turns your phone into a remote control, allowing you to access the basic functions of programs such as Winamp and Windows Media Player from your handset.

Then you can synchronize your device and establish a connection between the two Bluetooth peripherals.

Granted, the amount of control you have over these programs is pretty limited but for playback, pausing, rewinding, skipping, etc. Bluetooth Remote Control makes for an excellent weapon in the fight against exercise.
