In "solo" mode your main enemy is time. The difficulty grows with the passing of seconds, and the game becomes more and more frantic, until the inevitable end. But what you'll be able to get in the meantime? This mode is available in 4 different sizes of the gameboard, creating tactical situations vastly different. In "levels" mode you have to try to reach as many as 64 different targets. Merge adjacent letters simply swiping your finger to combine them into a valid word. Once you have found a word, it will disappear leaving the space for the higher letters to fall down, thus creating a completely new gameboard!

The object of Tetris is, of course, to make horizontal lines from the falling shapes. The controls are entirely based around touchscreen gestures. You tap to the side of a falling block to rotate it one way or the other, click and drag a shape to place it, or tap the bottom of the screen to make it fall instantly. There is a d-pad mode in the game, if you're having trouble with the gesture-based controls.

There is just one mode in this free version of Tetris for Android, Marathon mode. This much like the traditional Tetris, where you just keep going, the levels raising and the bricks falling faster as you go.

Upgrade to the full version and you'll also get Magic mode. Here, you get to use cool power-ups to help you beat each level, such as exploding mines that destroy blocks; bubble wrap that lets you pop individual square; and a magic crayon that lets you draw any shaped brick you like.

Pristine presentation

The presentation of Tetris is very good. The graphics are colorful and sparkly, and the sound and voice effects are crisp and full of impact. However, perhaps more of the screen real estate could have been used, because the game board is actually quite small.

Unfortunately, the music in this version of Tetris is almost unbearable. Many users would probably have preferred just the original Gameboy version of the soundtrack rather than the hideous remixes that appear in this one.

There are plenty of game options to tweak in Tetris for Android and the game keeps a record of all your stats, so you can track your progress.

It should be noted that this ad-supported free version of Tetris accesses a lot of permissions for your phone, including those that can directly call phone numbers and GPS location. There's not necessarily anything sinister about this but it's worth checking the Permissions tab on the Tetris Free Android Market page to see what the game can access in your system.

Tetris for Android does justice to the original format of the game, and the touch screen control system makes it easy to play.

The concept of Puzzle Attack is very simple - you move blocks horizontally around the screen in a limited number of moves to create color chains. When 3 or more colors connect, they disappear, and when all the blocks have gone, you move to the next level. There are 3 levels to choose from and multiple stages in each game.

Puzzle Attack doesn't have many options - you can create a profile and play online via a Google Account, and there's a browser-based Infinite Challenge that should keep you going if you want a change. Puzzle Attack remembers your game from one session to another, and you can also undo any move, so you'll always have the opportunity to remedy any mistakes.

Puzzle Attack is a simple puzzle game, but some will find it really addictive!

If you enjoy playing the classic puzzle games Phit and Tetris, then you're going to love Torect Lite, which is essentially a cross between the two.

The object of Torect Lite is to take the Tetris-style blocks you're given and use them to make a solid rectangle shape. You can pick up the pieces and move them around just by holding and dragging them, although you're not able to rotate them.

The gameplay in Torect Lite is highly addictive and this is one you'll find yourself glued to for quite some time. Unfortunately, it's not very easy though, and with more than 500 levels at your disposal, it's going to take you a long time before you've finished with Torect Lite. In fact, it took me about an hour just to get to the third level.

Torect Lite can get a bit repetitive and it would've been nice to see some different game modes, multiplayer options, or even just a high scores board, to add a bit more interest to the game.

As it is though, Torect Lite is still a highly addictive, brain-bending puzzle game.
