SportyPal 1.2.7

SportyPal is a free app that allows you to monitor and log your workouts. It can be used to track running, cycling, walking, rollerblading or similar exercise.

Using the GPS function of your Smartphone, SportyPal is able to log lots of data about your activities. The software records your speed, movement, distance traveled, position and calories burned.

Using SportyPal is as simple as choosing New Workout from the main menu then selecting the type of activity you'll be doing. The GPS service will then be launched and the app will kick into action just as you do. The screen will show you the elapsed time and the all the activity data mentioned above. You can pause the timer at any moment by pressing the Select button to set a checkpoint.

All of the runs, cycles, skates, etc. you do are stored in the My Workouts section of SportyPal. Besides getting a rundown of all the stats for each workout you can also view your route in Google Maps and see the evolution of your exercise on a graph. If you register with SportyPal then you're able to upload all of your workouts to the internet.

SportyPal didn't always seem precise during our tests. At times, following a connection drop-out or a change of environment, the stats seem to skew. For instance, at one point I was apparently running at 56mph! The majority of the time, though, the measurements seem pretty accurate.

Although it's not 100% accurate all the time, SportyPal makes for a handy way to track your workouts and log the routes you've taken.

Download SportyPal 1.2.7 in Softonic

Skype for Windows Mobile 3.0.0.256 Beta

Skype for Windows Mobile allows you to make free Skype-to-Skype calls using a 3G or WiFi connection.

This mobile version of the Skype VOIP client also lets you call phones with Skype credits, as well as allowing you to receive calls on your online number, send instant messages, share files, and more.

Using Skype on your phone is dead easy. Once launched, the program gives you all sorts of warnings to notify you that it will be using your mobile Internet connection. Then it's just a case of signing in with your regular Skype account details to get started.

Your contacts will all be imported and displayed in the main window, along with details of their statuses. To call a person, just tap on their name and hit the phone icon. The call quality in our tests was excellent, and as long as your connection is stable you shouldn't experience any drop outs.

Instant messaging features

The IM feature in Skype for Windows Mobile is easy to use and includes a range of emoticons, templates for one-click replies, file sharing, and the ability to add other participants to the conversation. We did note a few lags in the time between the messages being typed and arriving at their destination.

Skype keeps a record of all your text conversations, as well as logging your call history, voicemails, and files exchanged. You can view this information at any time just by clicking the 'History' button from the well-organized main menu.

Skype settings

There are a few settings you can tinker around with that help you personalize your Skype experience. For instance, you can choose to enable or disable the Mood message prompt, forward calls to another number, and block calls from people you don’t trust.

If you're expecting a fully-fledged version of Skype that has all the features of the PC or Mac version of the program then you'll be a little disappointed. There's no video conferencing or games, for example, and there are no tools for organizing your contacts into categories.

Sadly, Skype is no longer officially supported for Windows Mobile and the developer says it has no plans to release more updates for Windows phones in the future. However, you can still download the app from Softonic and use it for free.

It’s worth trying, because Skype for Windows Mobile offers everything you'd expect from a mobile version of the great VOIP app - it's easy to use, it's fun, and it's free!

Download Skype for Windows Mobile 3.0.0.256 Beta in Softonic

LineRider 1.0.13 (SP)

If you're a bit of a speed freak who loves roller coasters, go-karts and sledging then I'm sure you've thought about designing your own high-speed tracks before.

LineRider allows you to build your own toboggan courses using your mobile phone. Naturally, it also lets you ride them afterwards, so you can get your adrenaline fix. It's a pretty unique concept for a mobile game and it works very well.

The main section of LineRider can be accessed by selecting the 'Create track' option from the top menu. Here you're faced with a blank grid and a series of tools to help you build your track. You simply select the tool you want from the icons at the top then position the cursor and start drawing. Besides the 9 different types of line (including ones that accelerate, slow you down, and reverse), there are tools for applying curves, adding scenary, erasing, zooming, and an undo feature. Once you're course is finished you just hit the play button and watch your little man hang on for dear life.

The challenge of LineRider comes with refining your track so that your tobogganer can successful reach the finish line. To do this, you'll need to keep editing the course and replaying the action to test it out. Once you're finished you can even share your track with others online through LineRider.

Besides the track creation section, LineRider also includes a series of 'Puzzles', whereby you're given a set of courses that you must fix in order for your little guy to reach the bottom. Some of these prove mighty tricky and only serve to add to the game's longevity.

LineRider represents one of the most original interactive mobile games around and its depth and community features will have you hooked.

Download LineRider 1.0.13 (SP) in Softonic

TCPMP (BetaPlayer) 0.72 RC1

The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP) is an open source video and audio player compatible with all the most popular codecs and multimedia file types.

Portable video is fast becoming the most popular secondary use for Smartphones, so making sure you have the right media player is now a priority for many Windows Mobile device owners. TCPMP is easy to use, very stable and loaded with a variety of features. TCPMP's main screen is reminiscent of similar programs on your desktop computer, with options to change aspect ratio, zoom and volume as well as more advanced controls such as video speed (10% - 200%), video driver, audio preamp and more.

One issue with playing video files on a Smartphone, irrespective of which program you use to play them, is that there will be some lag or jumps from time to time. TCPMP's settings help you with this, allowing you to play around with different levels of quality and performance to help you guarantee the best possible multimedia experience. TCPMP is certainly a lot more customizable than most other Smartphone video apps.

Compare the playback quality on your Smartphone with a purpose-built portable media player and you’ll see the difference. TCPMP's settings are therefore an essential feature of the program, allowing you to play around with different levels of quality and performance to help you guarantee the best possible multimedia experience. You should note that TCPMP is also available for Pocket PC devices.

In all, TCPMP is a free, open source multimedia player which I'd recommend to anyone who wants to watch video on their Windows Mobile Smartphone. That said, if portable video is your heart’s desire, it would definitely be worth investing in a device built specifically for video playback which will provide much better overall quality.

Download TCPMP (BetaPlayer) 0.72 RC1 in Softonic
