Skype is great for making free or cheaper calls from your computer. But what if you're out and about and want to speak to your Skype contacts on the move? Then you need iSkoot.

iSkoot is a free program that puts Skype on your Palm Treo. As a result, you can make calls to people, chat via IM and even receive Skype calls to your mobile. You can also use iSkoot to make cheaper international calls using the SkypeOut service.

Setting up iSkoot is a painless procedure. You just need to select your model, download the installer and enter your Skype ID and password once the client is installed (you can create a new account if you need to). Your Skype contacts are automatically displayed and you can start calling right away by clicking on the name. Anyone familiar with Skype will be able to pick it up straight away, but there is a handy online help section if you need some assistance.

Call quality in iSkoot is generally excellent, and data connection speeds aren't really an issue, due to the way the system works. iSkoot basically connects you to a server which is in turn connected to the voice network via a regular mobile call. The only problem with this method is that it means you may get hit with long distance call charges, since you don't know what the number will be until the iSkoot server makes the call. The upshot of this is that if you're using your phone abroad you could end up racking up a large bill calling home as you will get hit with roaming charges. For making Skype calls in your own country though, the service is great as you bypass the need to pay call charges.

Provided you're only using it close to home, iSkoot offers a great way to chat cheaply on your Treo.

ZLauncher is one of a wide range of launcher applications, designed to help you manage your Palm PDA and launch its applications from a simpler and more user friendly interface. What makes ZLauncher special in its class is the variety of extra tools and features it brings to your Palm’s desktop.

The first feature to really impress in ZLauncher is its ability to launch programs from a storage card. This function allows you to move your applications to an external card and run them from there, even if they were originally installed to your device’s built-in memory. The logic of moving and running applications in this way is that by freeing up space on your Palm’s internal memory, you have more RAM free, thus helping your programs run faster and more efficiently.

The file explorer aspect of ZLauncher is a massive improvement on the native Palm file manager, providing features such as ‘tabbed’ browsing (allowing you to view multiple storage devices or folders in one window), and the ‘detail’ view mode which is reminiscent of Windows Explorer’s ‘details’ option and displays data on your files (size, date modified etc) alongside the filenames.. The addition of the Trash Bin (very similar to the Windows Recycle Bin) is a welcome improvement, as is ZLauncher’s ability to delete entire folder trees, an option curiously absent from some other launcher applications.

ZLauncher includes a themes option, allowing you to skin the program interface, customise icon sets and set pretty much any image as your device’s wallpaper. After changing icon sets, however, we noted a marked increase in ZLauncher’s memory consumption as well as various issues with icons appearing and disappearing. While the customization feature is a good idea, it seems that by using it you significantly increase the load on your Palm device. This is a shame but at the end of the day, themes and icons aren’t deal breakers in an application specifically designed to help you launch applications and manage your files.

In all, ZLauncher adds some seriously useful functions to your Palm’s desktop. While its memory load and customization options need some improvement, ZLauncher’s core features make it the best all round choice in its class.

The Attention Manager was a feature introduced in Palm OS 4.0 to co-ordinate information from different applications. It's not perfect though, and many users are annoyed by the fact that you don't get continuous alerts to things like new SMS messages or missed calls.

Attention Grabber is designed to change that, working as a hack for the Attention Manager. The main interface in Attention Grabber looks pretty dull, but it's functional and easy to use. You just need to set the program's state to 'Enabled' and choose the time interval between alerts.

You then get to choose how Attention Grabber will alert you, and can select 'Beep', 'LED' or 'Vibrate' (or a combination of these). You can also specify what time you want to activate the application, so it automatically comes into effect at this hour.

That's about it really, so Attention Grabber isn't really a powerful app with its own set of features, rather a free add-on that addresses a shortcoming in the Attention Grabber.

Once installed, there are all manner of features at your disposal to help you improve your knowledge of the Quran. For instance, you can set and retrieve bookmarks, highlight verses with a subtle green colour, and there's three levels of zoom available in case you're eyesight isn't up to scratch.

Quran Reader includes all 114 Suren of the Holy Scriptures in Arabic, English, Urdu and Farsi. You don't even need Arabic, Urdu or Farsi support on your handheld to read it, as it works straight out-of-the-box. Unfortunately this free version doesn't support other languages like French or German.

Reset Doctor reduces crashes, helps you track down buggy applications and most importantly, saves your preferences when they are inexplicably destroyed during resets. This means you won't miss alarms, lost settings or have to re-enter your registration codes.

There is a nasty bug in the operating system of Palm Devices with the new Non-Volatile-Filing-System (NVFS). It means that sometimes after a reset, you will lose all your settings and preferences.

Reset Doctor saves them! This means that your Alarms will still sound, your Registration codes will still work and your application preferences are safe.

If you've ever lost your preferences, you'll know how frustrating it can be. Not only do you have to restore your settings, but you can miss important alarms.

Reset Doctor in the background - it will keep your preferences backed up, and even allow you to restore them a couple of times for free should you ever need to!

Other applications need their preferences to set alarms, to know you have registered and to function normally. Reset Doctor restores the preferences during the reset. This means that other applications get their preferences and can do their jobs, so you don't miss anything important!

New Palm devices use a special memory area called the cache to actually run applications. When that gets full, the operating system is supposed to clear it out. Unfortunately, that sometimes causes crashes with applications that are accessing the data in the cache.

Reset Doctor lets you manage your cache so that there is always a set amount of cache free when an application runs. That should help applications to run smoothly and crash less.

Reset Doctor also helps you to force the cache clear more often, or on demand. This will help you when you are trying to track down applications that are crashing in the background because they don't 'understand' the cache. It also links to full instructions that will help you track down applications that are causing problems so you can either disable them, or use another application to fix them.

There are plenty of list managers around so, to be good, new software packages need to offer either something very different or lots and lots of options. ListPro has always offered both of these things but now it has some great additions. Firstly the new formatting options make it easy to arrange all your plans exactly as you want including with bullet points and numbers. You can also now quickly access websites if you need to get some more information.

One of the best features is the 25 new templates that are provided to get things done extra quickly so you don't have to start from scratch the whole time. This can prove a bit disappointing as they are not always exactly how you want them, but in terms of getting lists finished quickly they are a great addition. Also you can now share your lists with other users which is a great idea in theory and especially helpful for 'favourites' lists with subjects like music etc.

OK, so first things first, this software could get you in a lot of trouble. Excited? It's a controversial application because it allows you to monitor the activity of any other Treo - that means read text messages, search contacts, modify passwords, check battery and lock the phone. So if you've lost your PDA or you don't want to carry two phones it's extremely useful. And if you want to spy on family and friends it's equally good, and possibly illegal in your country.

Install SMS Commander on the mobile you want to control and send a text from another phone with the activation password and first order. Be careful, failure to follow the installation instructions could lead to improper operations of the application. There is also a free Radio ON/OFF application when you register SMS Commander. I always enjoyed art at school and have since developed an interest in digital illustration. Being out and about as much as I am though, it's difficult for me to find the time to sit on the computer and get creative.

Step forward JazzyDraw, an illustration app that allows you to set your creative juices loose on your Palm device. The program is armed with a few tools that let you scribble straight onto the page in a number of fun ways.

Beware that you'll need to install the plua.prc file that comes in the zipped download in order to get the program to work. Also beware that JazzyDraw demands a fair amount of memory (around 4Mb) in order to run properly, so you may need to shut down some apps or delete files before you start to free up space.

Once you've got going, it's quite good fun. You can play around with a number of easily-selectable tools, selecting the fill colour, line properties, drawing shapes, zooming, tinting, and more. While seasoned digital artists may be disappointed by the lack of advanced drawing tools, this is a good one for kids.

You won't create any masterpieces, but JazzyDraw is OK for doodling while you're sat on the bus.

The app supports all the popular online music stores which support Microsoft's Janus technology, and even lets you play tracks from Napster To Go, and Rhapsody To Go. Pocket Tunes places a multitude of audio sources at your fingertips, I just wish the connection speeds were quick enough that I could really enjoy it. Unfortunately though, downloading music to a Palm device is a laborious process.

Nevertheless, when you have tunes on your device, this application provides an impeccable surface for spinning them on. The player can be skinned to your heart's content by downloading new themes and there are lots of options for adjusting the sound. For instance, you get a graphic equalizer, bass boost, gapless playback, volume boost, and even a primitive crossfader for mixing your tunes.

If you haven't got an MP3 player but have got a Palm then Pocket Tunes is a real must-have.

Many an eyeball has been lost when I've been out for a meal with friends or family, over who owes what, how much we're going to tip the waitor, or whether Geoff Hurst's shot actually crossed the line in the 1966 World Cup final. The application allows you to calculate the account of your bill and divide it between several people. It's very straightforward to operate - you simply input the cost of the bill, define the percentage of tax that you wish to pay, and enter the number of people who are paying. The program then quickly calculates the amount that each person must fork out and displays this information in the same window. All of the fields, apart from the total bill amount, are optional, so Tipster is pretty flexible.

Unfortunately the program only really works if you're splitting the bill evenly so is unlikely to solve any squabbles over the tablecloth if one person has just had a salad and everyone else has been quaffing oysters and caviar all evening.
