If you've ever fancied yourself as a budding DJ then you've got a huge number of apps to choose from but most of them only work on specific platforms.

Disco XT however is a professional cross-platform DJ mixing and music playback software that integrates with both iTunes and Windows Media Player. The good thing is that no setup or importing is required with Disco XT so you can get up and running as soon as it's installed. It's packed with features to help your mixes sound as professional as possible no matter what your ability.

Examples include the Pitch-lock. This allows you to adjust the playback speed of song on Disco XT without changing the musical pitch which makes it much easier to match two songs with different pace. If this still doesn't help, another useful Disco XT feature is Automix which plays and fades songs together without any effort on your part. This works with, excuse the pun, rather mixed results but it does an acceptable job, and best of all, allows you to get on with enjoying the party, all thanks to Disco XT.

There are many other features of Disco XT such as Automatic BPM detection, Waveform analysis and even a voice recording function that make it a very solid DJing setup.

Download Disco XT 6.4.6 in Softonic

Mixxx 1.9.0

DJing software is often expensive but Mixxx breaks the mold as an excellent, open source and free DJing app that's incredibly accomplished.

Mixxx features everything you'd expect in a commercial package including MIDI controller support and a mixing engine with recording vinyl control. When you start Mixxx, it automatically scans your music library for audio files which is a bit annoying because you don't get any choice over it. You have to wait for this to finish before you can get stuck into Mixxx but it's worth the wait.

Mixxx is complete but not too complicated for the aspiring DJ. There's plenty of documentation for those that do get stuck but there's nothing more to it than browsing to your music library and selecting two songs to use - one for the left and right decks. The crossfader is in the middle of the deck for manual control but you can let Mixxx take control with it's auto-syncing option. This tries to measure the BPM's of each song and can result in some weird results but it's impressive.

For professionals, you can add external devices such as CD players and vinyl decks. To use the rest of the controls you'll have to know something about mixing decks and how they work.

Mixxx is an excellent simple mixing decks for anyone that's having a party or wants to get going as a DJ - best of all it's completely free.

Download Mixxx 1.9.0 in Softonic

Radiologik DJ 2011 6.1

Radiologik DJ is a sophisticated DJing application aimed mainly at professional radio DJs.

Radiologik DJ consists of three main players and one library player. All of them have customizable individual audio outputs and detailed time calculations. They also all integrate with iTunes, and a special scheduler for automating transmissions although this has to be downloaded separately.

The two program players consist of an independent voiceover player and a library player. The players operate in the same way as they would in a radio station environment by overlapping at your command. You can configure custom start and stop fades for each track played and you can search directly in iTunes from the Radiologik DJ interface. The integration with iTunes is superb with tracks imported instantly, searches lightening quick and support for dragging and dropping tracks into Radiologik DJ.

For professionals, Radiologik DJ has a lot to offer. The automatic track playing time calculations and the scheduler are two particularly useful features. However, for beginners, Radiologik DJ isn't particularly user friendly - it takes a lot of getting used to and despite the iTunes integration, isn't ideal for those just starting out.

For professional radio DJs, Radiologik DJ is a complete and highly accomplished solution.

Download Radiologik DJ 2011 6.1 in Softonic

G-Force is an audio visualization plug-in for a range of media players (only iTunes on Mac) that allows you to visually display your music and audio.

G-Force includes a host of impressive features such as anti-aliased effects, millions of effect combinations, savable and scriptable effects and video file export capabilities. You can also customize and extend G-Force in various ways.

G-Force is basically a mathematical application which takes sounds and turns them into images. It makes an impressive piece of eye-candy but with one drawback. You have to pay an annual subscription to keep using it which will no doubt put off many users. It's therefore probably more appealing to professional DJs and other performance artists that need a visual display to accompany music.

G-Force is an impressive application but will probably appeal more to professionals than general users.

Download G-Force 4.2 in Softonic

Neutrino (AudioCodex) 1.90

Have you ever wanted to muck around a bit with your songs - speed up the slow ones and slow down the fast ones etc? If so, you'll love Neutrino (formerly AudioCodex and Machinehead).

Neutrino is a fun audio player that allows you to shift the pitch and rate of your audio files and integrates perfectly with iTunes. Neutrino has been designed with musicians and audio professionals in mind, who need maximum control over the pitch of their music and is much more than just your average DJ pitch shifter. This means you can add effects, reverb, loops, time, pitch, audio Units plug-ins and more. You can improve music with equalizers and visualize music as it plays.

Apart from changing the pitch and tempo, you can of course also twist, squelch, distort and warp your favorite music with few problems. However, it's not particularly easy to work out how to locate some of these functions and the developers could have made them more obvious on the interface. Neutrino also isn't particularly well integrated with external music apps such as scrobbling to Last.fm for example. It is, however, fairly well integrated with iTunes.

Neutrino is a decent tool for all those that want to have a bit of fun with their music or professionals that want to refine it.

Download Neutrino (AudioCodex) 1.90 in Softonic
