Gmail is a great email service, but most users only use it inside a web browser. It can be a bit annoying to have a browser window open at all times to get email alerts. Kwerty Gmail Notifier makes getting email notifications a breeze.

The application is simple. When you first launch Kwerty Gmail Notifier, you are greeted with a login screen. Once logged in, the app sits in the Windows 7 task bar. This allows Kwerty Gmail Notifier to provide an icon of how many unread emails you have.

Hovering over the icon will give you a pop up preview of the unread emails. The window is small, but it still tells you the subject, sender, and first few lines of the email. It would be nice if Kwerty Gmail Notifier had an option to increase the size of the preview window, though.

While Kwerty Gmail Notifier is great just for notifications, it doesn't do much beyond that. You can't interact with your messages within the app - clicking on them opens up a browser window. Right clicking the app icon will yield shortcuts to open the inbox, compose, check for new mail, and settings.

Gmail Notifier enables you to check your Gmail account right from the system tray, that is, without having to visit the Gmail webpage. Although this idea seems quite convenient at first sight, the truth is that I found this little app a bit disappointing.

First, you can only check one account, while other similar notifiers such as Gmail Manager have support for multiple Gmail accounts. Also, Gmail Notifier only checks your mailbox when you tell it to do so, as there's no automatic check feature included.

On the upside, the program shows message snippets every time you check email, so you can decide if it's worth opening the browser to read them or not.

If you're constantly checking your Gmail account for new messages, you need a program like Gmail Notifier.

With Gmail Notifier you'll save the time of having to launch the browser, go to the Gmail website, log in with your credentials and finally waiting for your inbox to load. This small app sits silently on the System Tray and alerts you with a blinking icon (and an optional sound) every time you have new messages to read.

Gmail Notifier can work with multiple email accounts, which makes it even more useful. The only thing you need is to make sure they all have the IMAP option enabled in your Gmail account settings. Clicking any message will open it inside Gmail Notifier, allowing you to read the content – though it's not very comfortable, because you can't resize the program's window. You can also mark messages as read and delete them, syncing those changes with the Gmail website in real time.

I did find two negative characteristics in Gmail Notifier: one is that the program only shows unread messages, so once you open them inside the program – or from the website – they eventually disappear from the interface. The other annoying feature in Gmail Notifier is that you can't set the time interval to check for new messages.

Despite some minor flaws, Gmail Notifier is still a handy app to check your Gmail accounts in a much faster, more comfortable way.
